Does DCOM show a big instate/regional preference?
Spooner13 07-26-2008, 04:53 PM Does anyone know anything about the clincal rotations at DCOM? Are most of them in Knoxville? Will they have a lot of didactic learning experiences? Are they at teaching hospitals? Is that enough questions for you?
Sorry for all the questions, but if anyone has any insight, that would be great.
fortima 07-26-2008, 10:49 PM i dont know about "big" preference, ....but its there for sure.
from my experience applying and interviewing this past year, you want to apply as early as you can if you are not from the region
Does DCOM show a big instate/regional preference?
fortima 07-26-2008, 10:51 PM when (if) you interview, they give you a list of hospitals and locations of the clinical rotation sites....
or pvt msq a current dcom student and they will give you more information

Petey Habibi 08-13-2008, 03:05 PM Hey everyone, first post btw!!
I applied to LMU and this morning got a secondary back from them. My MCAT is....Friday!!! This is the second time I'm taking it and hopefully my last.
I hear they lean more towards closer residents. Well I live in FL, so I'm screwed =p
I guess I applied early, applications were sent out this morning, took aacomas roughly 4 weeks to send them out. Hope I get an interview here, I really like the campus.
Take care,
Peter

307Doc 08-13-2008, 03:25 PM Does DCOM show a big instate/regional preference?
I am from Wyoming and had the great opportunity to interview and be accepted to DCOM. I believe that I interviewed with a girl that was from California that was accepted and is attending there this fall. So as for preference for regional students, I'm sure there is one. But, it is sure possible to get an opportunity to interview and get an acceptance. It's a great school in a beautiful location. I would have attended had I not had an acceptance from KCOM. So Good Luck.

Thanks man, you too. Just in the library going over some review, then I'm heading to the gym and the beach. Can't stand this library tan I've gotten this summer!!!!

Once there is more info available on rotations, I'll try to update to answer some of the questions that have been posed. Good luck to all those applying.

Doctor4Life1769 08-17-2008, 10:38 PM Regarding the preference for instaters or those in the tri-state region, I think it's a myth. Sure, there may be a fair share from the area taken, but from what I've noticed there have been people from all around the country so dont worry about that.
Good luck in the application cycle.
fortima 08-19-2008, 11:36 AM take it from someone who was waitlisted this past year and went through the app process with dcom (which was quite an adventure)....there is a preference...i think out of their class (c/o 2012), 75-80 of them are from TN/tri state region.
This being said, there are def still plenty of spots for out-of-staters.....but like i said before, apply as early as you can.

MossPoh 08-19-2008, 11:42 AM If that is simply how many are attending then it is difficult to tell. Most people will want to go to the school that is closest to their home area anyway. I'm sure there is a little bias, but I'd just need to see the actual numbers to verify.

71 of 160 people accepted into the c/o 2012 were from TN, KY or VA. How many of them were waitlisters, who knows. And there is nothing wrong with the school for doing that either b/c their mission is to serve the appalachain regiion and who is more suited to stay in that area and practive? Yes, people who are from there. But there are students in both classes from all over the country and internationally, so everyone does have a shot.
My question to you is why do you say the app process was an adventure with DCOM.
195349 08-22-2008, 05:01 AM Just because you're from the region, does NOT guarantee acceptance. I drove 90 miles to LMU, from deeper in the Appalachian region and was interviewed and wait listed and not accepted. All of this while people from all over the country were accepted.
No one is "screwed" for being out of state. They DO take more people from the region, but that may be because that is the majority of their applicants in addition to the school mission.
Lamborghini1315 08-22-2008, 09:59 AM DCOM is a private school and its not obligated to maintain a certain instate to out of state student body ratio. However, it is one of DCOM's goals to help the applachian region by accepting more in state kids to serve the region. Its a no brainer..they have the intention to help the region out hence you will see half the class from around the area. The other half will be from all over the place but this isn't any different from other private schools, for instance PCOM, NYCOM prefer students from their respective states. On the other hand state schools like UMDNJ, TCOM, MSUCOM have an 80 percent or more in-state acceptances.
soccerchicoc 08-22-2008, 10:32 PM gonna call on monday to see if my application is complete.... i hope i get an early interview!
azmo07 08-24-2008, 08:48 PM Does anyone know when the first batch of interview invites gets sent out? Has the admission committee started to look at 200-2009 apps?
My secondary application is all complete since last week. Very excited and hopefully hear good news from DCOM. One of my top choices!
Jack johnson 08-27-2008, 07:00 PM I was wondering about its accreditation status. I noticed that it has provisional accreditation. I know that a school usually gains accreditation after the first class graduates. But, can someone elaborate on this and also what it means to scholarships and loans etc?

In terms of scholarships and loans, you are eligible for anything out there, including federal and private loans. as well as military scholarships. The only thing you aren't eligible for is some kind of health grant, or something like that, but you will have to check with the school on the specific one. You're right that DCOM is provisonally accredited until just before the first class graduates (yes, the school is given full accreditation before the first graduation, thus we are able graduate from a fully accredited school). DCOM will not have any problem in gaining its accreditation, in fact, we had the accreditators out last year and DCOM passed with flying colors and impressd them greatly. They will contiinue to visit the school each year up until full accreditation is reached.
Dr. Toaster 09-02-2008, 07:46 AM I just called LMU-DCOM to check on my folder, and they told me they are calling people for interviews starting on October 6th. They are doing Mondays and Tuesdays.
Since I already had KCOM on the 6th, I'm doing the 13th.
Anyway guys, FYI. The lady I talked to said they had a "stack" they were going to call. I just happened to randomly call them first. HAHA.
WOOHOO!!!

JagerDO 09-09-2008, 11:24 PM Congrats soccerchic! Hopefully I'll have similar news in the future. I decided to take Mr. Carney's advice and wait until we were off the wait-list. I am still waiting for my primary to process (4 weeks) and am thinking it shouldn't take me too long to get my secondary into DCOM again. This is going to be our year ;) Best of luck with the interview, keep us posted!
The Letter J 09-10-2008, 07:11 PM Hey guys,
I haven't posted here in a little while, but I figured I'd get back into it with the c/o '13 cycle starting and all. I just got invited to interview on Oct. 6th. Hopefully this is good news and means that they like me.:D
I really, really, REALLY like DCOM and I'm planning another trip there for the OMAC conferences this month.
Without over analyzing this, the question is: Is it a really good thing to be interviewed this early or am I just among a giant pile of people who will be interviewed early?

I'm looking at is as a good thing. I will be interviewing on October 7th (the second day). I worked really hard to be early and want all the advantages that come with it. I think there are a good amount of people that have already been invited, but it still is a rolling admission cycle. Early is always good. Don't worry about anybody else (or how many others there are). I thought about waiting for some interview feedback, but I think I'm ready for whatever they might throw at me. I think you are definitely at an advantage for being the first. Good luck!

You can look at the interview feedback from last year, I doubt the format and questions have really changed any. :)
And congrats to all the invites, and good luck!
and DCOM truly is an amazing school with amazing faculty and students, I'm soooooooo lucky to be here!
I got my interview invite - October 13th! Woo! I am driving out for the meet-up with the students the night before. I visited the school once before, when it was first built. I can't wait to see how it is now and to talk to the students.
YAY!

Thanks!

DCOM is absolutely amazing :) Im from Cali and although it is a BIG change I feel so at home here. And dont stress about the interview, it was one of the most laid back I went on and there were no really tough questions, all basic stuff, just look over the DCOM interview thread and you will fine!
GOOD LUCK :luck:

Hey all,
Just wanted to add my congrats to the first round of interviewees! :hardy: It seems pretty obvious, but the best advice I got before my interview was to be myself. I think it's even more important at DCOM. You don't necessarily have to have perfect grades or perfect scores or tons of experience, they are looking for some caring, down to Earth people that are willing to work hard and make everything they can out of this opportunity. If they think you would be a good match for this school, they will accept you, and if not, that's okay too because you want to be sure to end up at the school that best suits you. That said, I have been so pleased with my experience here so far - I wish you tons of luck and hope to see you next Summer! :luck:
JasonI 09-14-2008, 04:11 PM Just wanted to let everyone know that the No Bucks Coffee House is going to be open tonight (Sunday) since OMS-I has an exam tomorrow.

From what I have gathered by looking at the interview style from last year, it seems that it will be 2 interviewers and 1 interviewee. My question is, does that mean that there will only be 3 of us interviewing that day?

If you have any questions just PM me! And for all you guys interviewing so far I highly suggest going to the pizza night the night before the interview, its a good way to relax and to get some of your questions answered!
And on a personal note, my boyfriend just got an interview for Oct 14th! Yay! Im so glad we have a test on the 13th so I can relax that night and go to the pizza night! :D:D:D
scrystl608 09-14-2008, 08:11 PM I went to an interview last year. Everyone was very nice and the best advice was to be your self (politely). The questions I heard from most were ethical. I also had several freinds interview from LMU. The only no no I heard commented on was someone coming to the interview dressed innappropriately. Apparently they didn't feel a suit was necessary (or equiv. Female corporate wear).
soccerchicoc 09-14-2008, 09:16 PM From what I have gathered by looking at the interview style from last year, it seems that it will be 2 interviewers and 1 interviewee. My question is, does that mean that there will only be 3 of us interviewing that day?
no there was like 5 sets of interviewers so one at 1030 and one at 11 and last year when i interviewed there was probably around 10-11 of us
scrystl608 09-15-2008, 08:53 PM It was the same when I went. Two people interviewed you, but there were like 3 other interviews happening in different rooms at the same time. The day started with a building tour and presentations from financial aid and instructors. Then there were interveiws and lunch, then a grounds tour. Pretty straight forward.
The Letter J 09-15-2008, 10:25 PM ...
FutureDR09 09-16-2008, 02:59 AM Oh okay. That makes sense. Thanks for setting me straight. :) I'M EXCITED!
shasta9599 09-17-2008, 08:48 AM Congrats to all of you who are coming to interview. In my opinion you have done wonders for your chances of getting accepted by applying early. This in my opinion is a bigger factor in your acceptance than where you are coming from.
Here is my advice on interviews...BE YOURSELF!!! lol Obviously they liked something about you to invite you here so show them some more of that.
Also after you hang up with the admissions office call the hotel and book your room. I can tell you how quick the rooms book up so do not wait or you'll be staying in a roach coach (like I did lol)
My recommendations are:
Holiday Inn Express in Middlesboro - 1-877-863-4780
Cumberland Gap Inn - 1-423-869-9786
I can't express to you how fast these hotels book up so call ASAP.
Also do come to the pizza nite the evening before the interview. I know it might seem weird to have dinner with a bunch of people you've never met but it will do wonders for your state of mind and you'll feel so much more comfortable going into the interview the next morning. If nothing else you'll meet some of your fellow interviewees, some med students you might want help from should you attend here, and you get some pretty good pizza!
Good luck to you all I look forward to meeting you!
JagerDO 09-17-2008, 09:42 PM How much do you all suggest changing secondary application essays? I applied last year really late and was waitlisted. My interviewer gave some very positive comments on my essays so I was thinking of not changing them much buuuut since I was waitlisted, it's possible that they were read multiple times. Any thoughts?
godsfshrmn 09-19-2008, 09:01 AM A big word of advice for those of you who are coming to interview...RELAX! The faculty here is so chill when you get to know them. Thery're really easy to talk to. I know that some nervousness is expected but just calm down and be yourselves!
koojo 09-19-2008, 09:53 AM I just received a call for an interview on 10/14. I've been looking around to find nearby airports, but they all seem far away. I found one in Middlesboro, but none of the online places (expedia, priceline, etc), are able to find that airport. Anyone?

The Middlesboro airport is a small private type thing...so no airlines.
The closest is Knoxville and you get a car and drive up (about an hour to and hour and a half drive). Some of my classmates and I have found it is cheaper to fly into Nashville or Louisville, significantly cheaper. If you fly in there you will be looking at a 4 hour drive but the savings may be worth it if you have the time. Also about 4 hours away is Atlanta and Cincinnati also Lexington is about 2 1/2 hours away but historically those three have priced out about as much as Knoxville. Also check the Bristol Tri-Cities airport they sometimes have cheaper airfare depending on where you're coming from, it's about 2 hours away.
Hope this helps!
Congrats on the interview!

ThePiratesse 09-19-2008, 03:14 PM We may not actually be doing pizza this year, but something else. Don't know if we've made our mind up what to do. They moved one of the interview days to Monday, and Oasis isn't open the Sunday night before. :( I went several times last year and had a blast, and the pizza at Oasis is soooo good... I'll try to find out what we are doing instead and repost, ASAP. Whatever it is, I encourage you guys to try and participate. It seems nerve wracking to go and meet up with a bunch of strangers the night before such a huge day, but you will be thanking yourselves later for doing it. It makes the interview day feel so much more relaxed.. plus you can walk in confidently already knowing some of the people in the room. :D
Congrats to the continuing interview invites!:hardy:

I would like to make my coffee shop, No Bucks Coffee House, available for pre-interview meet/greet nights. I know the night we were at the Oasis the band started setting up and that was our cue to leave as no one could carry on a conversation. I am also not normally open on Sunday nights, but would be glad to open the nights before interviews. I'm not sure who sets up these events or who I should contact.

Could you post directions to your place from the school? I was just thinking this morning a good cup of coffee might have been good....and believe me, it would have come in handy.
docman85 09-24-2008, 03:08 PM Ok so I am curious about something... LMU is on the top of my list, and I am really interested in seeing the school. I know that they are hosting an open house this Saturday and I am thinking about going and turning my secondary in to them in person. The only thing is I just took the MCAT on the 13, so I don't know my score yet. My main question is if I go to the open house will I get the opportunity to speak with some people in admissions, and will this have a significant positive impact on my chances of getting in? Also have they ever given interviews without knowing the applicants MCAT scores?
Thanks
Limvostov 09-24-2008, 04:12 PM So... my wife is really excited about this interview (half of her family is in the Nashville area) so she has decided to come with me. She is also interested in the pizza event the night before... not so much for the food (though she loves pizza) but more for getting to the know first hand the social climate of LMU and what type of place it will be. Would that be a bad idea to bring a spouse?
Also... what kind of dress is appropriate for pizza the night before. I would guess a suit would be crazy, but should I at least wear slacks and a dress shirt or is my usually jeans and button up outdoor shirt good enough?
Thanks for any advice... I am so looking forward to this interview, the pictures of LMU-DCOM are amazing, the staff has been very polite, and I really like Tennessee overall... especially the cardinals. We don't have those out here and they just look so cool. :)

I'm actually going to be one of the students helping out with the open house this weekend. You should come if you want to see and learn more about the school... I'm not sure if it would help your chances, but it definitely wouldn't hurt. There will be people from admissions there, so who knows. To answer your other question, they have given interviews without MCAT scores under certain circumstances. I hope this answers everything!

Definitely come and bring your wife! Its just going to be other students there, so be as casual as you want! I can't wait for pizza night to start up again.. I'm not sure which dates I'm attending yet... We're putting the schedule together and we'll hopefully know when some of the SDNrs will be there. Looking forward to meeting you guys when I can!

If headed north, towards the tunnel, turn right at the light by the IGA and Marathon. That is Nettleton Road. Go about 1/4mile and we are on the right. Kind of behind the Citizens Bank and drycleaners. Our address is 200 Nettleton Road.
We've just expanded our hours. We are now open:
Mon-Thu 7-11am & 3-11pm (or later if people are studying and want to stay)
Fri-Sun 7-11am
Be sure and watch our website for new items. We've recently added a variety of hot teas and are looking for more items to add soon.

Jeans and a polo is more than dressy enough. The only hotel in town we stayed at listed the event as a "Reception dinner to meet your interviewers" so we were expecting something kind of formal, drinks-and-dinner-cocktailparty-the-interview-starts-now-don't-use-the-wrong-fork sort of thing. Uh, it's not. It's a pizza joint. With a bar. And kareoke. And on a good night, a band. And there were no interviewers there. Just students. At least on the night we went.

This night is totally casual and suppose to be fun. It is meant to relax you guys interviewing and give you the opportunity to meet some students and ask questions about the school and local area. The big take home message is "this is a fun and casual thing we do for those of you interviewing". Come and relax if you're gonna be in town later...come by later we're usually there a few hours. Bring spouses, significant others, family, kids (I do) anyone who is coming to town with you. Dress casual and be prepared to relax the night before your interview instead of being locked up in a hotel room stressing.
See you all soon!!
Good Luck!!!
Limvostov 09-24-2008, 07:48 PM Good to know... casual pizza is the best kind... especially if they have any good micros to wash it down with.

After a quick search, I have learned something new today. And it's only 7am. Now I can coast for the rest of the day. :D
And good luck on getting in. Be persistant. Call. Email. Take every opportunity to talk to the people here.

Yeeaaaa about that.....
I see your from Corvalis and I know they have good micros in that area. This area isn't quite like that. Claiborne county is not dry but there is no hard liquor sale here only beer and wine, you have to go to Knoxville for anything stronger. Middlesboro is in a dry county as well. There are some decent beers here but this place isn't known for it's variety of alcohol.

Since you're coming from the west coast, you'll have to pass through Nashville. Stop and pick me up some Yazoo (http://www.yazoobrew.com/).

Oh... Now that I know about Yazoo I will have to try it. However, I was joking about beer with pizza... during an interview (or pre-interview) the strongest thing I would have is Dr. Pepper.
Also someone sent me a private message and I really apprieciate the advice. I was wondering if they could elaborate more on how they came to that conclusion. From personal experience? Are you currently atteneding LMU? Sorry to post in here, but I dont see any other way of contacting you.

OMG!!!! I freakin love bubble tea, and there is not one place in Knoxville that sells it! I've been having withdrawals for like 2 years now. Makes me soooo sad. There's no pho in Kville either.. well there was a place, but they're not open anymore. :(

I haven't had it since I lived in California a few years back. Man, oh, man, I miss it.
I'm applying to LMU, so let's hope we get to see Bubble Tea (and my presence at LMU) in the near future!
nascardoc 09-25-2008, 09:59 PM I'm excited to see the interview season starting up again and that pizza night is gonna be back!!! We had a blast last year, so we can only make this year even better. I highly encourage everyone to attend, if possible, b/c you will get some great info, and more importantly, reduce your stress the day before your interview. It is low-key, casual, ask whatever you want atmosphere and family is more than welcome. We had spouses, kids, and parents join us, in addition to the interviewees, so please don't hesitate taking anyone. Its a real fun night and we hope to see lots of people again this year.
Oh, and BTW, DCOM rocks!!! :woot:

Limvostov 09-26-2008, 11:34 AM I am having a hard time getting an idea of the fitness/wellness center from the website. Is it ample in size and have decent equipment? Also, are there plans that allow a spouse to use the pool and other facilities?
Secondly, do most students live in Middlesboro instead of Harrogate? When I come out there I want to look at both towns a little and get an idea of travel distance and community styles. I know it will be important to find a place that could handle a family and will be close to a hospital. Any feedback from locals or current students would be great on this one.

They just opened a small fitness room in the student apartments. It has some limited workout equipment. If you just run on the treadmill or on the elliptical then its perfect. There's a big screen plasma and a hookup to the speakers for your iPod. If you live in the apartments you get to use it all for free. If you don't its something like $75 a semester and I can't remember if that includes your spouse or not.
The LMU on campus workout room is really not that bad. I came from UTK which has an awesome brand new workout facility and it was quite a downsize. It's free for all students.
It seems like its a pretty even mix for those that live in Harrogate vs Middlesboro. Middlesboro definitely has much more stuff when it comes to food and such and isn't that far away from school. I personally live on the Middlesboro side and love it. The hospital is probably about 15 min away from the school in Middlesboro.
malisa 09-26-2008, 12:16 PM I have to jump in on this conversation. I love bubble tea. In birmingham there was a little stand in the mall that sold it. And lucky me will be visiting Bham in October so I'm defintely going to go get a bubble tea. Yeah I'd definitely be inclined to visit a coffee shop with bubble tea ;)
Oh I signed up for Pizza Night and I'll be at Oasis November 2nd! So anyone interviewing on the 3rd I hope you go to the pizza thing. And if anyone has any questions about anything feel free to send me a PM. I'm a first year student btw.
Yay! There are lots of bubble tea lovers...clearly a sign. :) Mango and HoneyDew flavored are the best.
I have my interview on October 13 and I'll be going to the pizza meetup the night before. Anyone else??

I'm going to be on the student panel tomorrow... A lot off the basics about the school will be covered, the mission, about osteopathic medicine, a tour, etc.. Two other students and I will also be doing an OMT demonstration as well. The OMAC should be pretty informative as well as giving you a feel about the school and area. My name is Andi, so you'll know which one I am when you get there!

I know you can buy the stuff I just don't know where, my stuff was given to me. I would check at an Asian store I bet they have it there or you can order it on line. I had packages of the little balls that were dehydrated and bags of powder to mix w/ water and make into a smoothie.

Okay, we need to have a bubble tea workshop. We can make it ourselves and sample all the different flavors. OMT/Bubble tea night, anyone? haha

Hi FutureDR!
It's hard to give you exact statistics because they're changing at every point during the interview process, obviously depending on how many seats are left. That's why it's important to apply (and hopefully interview) early. You could call the admissions office because I know I was told that info at some point after interviews ended last year, but I wouldn't concern myself with that. Just go through last year's interview question database to get an idea of the questions you might be asked and be yourself at the interview and it will go great! Good luck!:luck:
malisa 09-30-2008, 08:40 AM Since I don't know if everyone here reads the Osteopatic Forum as well I thought I'd post it agan here. Hey it took me like a whole lecture to write this up :p
So I've only been at school here for, oh about 9 weeks now but I figured it is at least be better than nothing.
Curriculum: I think it is good. This semester we have anatomy (with histology), molecular fundamentals (biochem, cell bio), essentials of patient care, OMM of course, and a medical statistics type class. Anatomy and Molecular take up most of the time. After the block exam we take a group exam. You go over the same test with a group of your peers and discuss the answers. Then you get to see what the correct answers are. This is great because you will know about how well (or bad) you did on the exam. Also you get the chance to challenge questions if a majority of people in your group got the question wrong and think it was a bad question (poorly worded, not taught well, etc).
The only con I see about curriculum which really isn't that big of a deal is that the schedule is different every day. Sometimes we start at 8:30, some days we start at 7:30, sometimes we only have a couple classes on Friday, sometimes we are here all day. You have to always check the schedule to make sure you know what time class is. The consistent thing is the days we have lab but the irregularity is whether your group goes first and whether you are in the lab or the break out rooms first. It can get confusing if you don't check the schedule.
My favorite class right now is anatomy because to me seems the most important to know to be a doctor. Also anatomy carries over into OMM hugely! The anatomy lab is very nice as well.
Location: First off the area is beautiful mountains! But I think the awesome natural beauty comes with the price of it being a rural area. If it were a big city there wouldn't be as many pretty trees around. So yes it's kind of the middle of nowhere. There is a super Wal-Mart, a tiny mall, and every type of fast food restaurant you could want ten minutes away. If you want to go to a regular mall or a sit down restaurant you have to travel to Knoxville (1.5 hours away). This isn't too much of a problem because you don't have time or money to eat out or go shopping all the time.
My biggest con: If you have pets (like I do) it is VERY hard to find a place to rent. I think more apartments and what not are being built.
Cost: Tuition for this year was $31,500. The other costs are here http://www.lmunet.edu/DCOM/finaid/budget.htm
The cost of living in the area is very cheap. I don't pay much at all for rent but I have a horrible landlord (I don't think anyone else really has this problem just me). The gas in this town has been cheaper than the neighboring cities as well. And if you go grocery shopping in KY (ten mins away with the Wal-Mart) they have no food tax.
Faculty: They are helpful and caring. Everyone wants you to do well and almost all have an open door policy. I feel like I could go up to any faculty and have a conversation with them. Of course I have some faculty I like more than others but it's just personal preference.
You have a faculty advisor assigned to you at the beginning of the year and they suggest you meet with them monthly. It's optional but it could be really helpful if you have a problem with anything personal or school related. My advisor gave me some really good study strategies. Of course you can go talk to any faculty if you need to but it is nice having someone assigned specifically for you.
Reputation: New school. We only have two classes of students currently. I think the reputation must be great since the amount of applications is greatly increasing each year. Everyone from the first class seems extremely happy and satisfied with their choice. I don’t see any reason why the reputation won’t continue to get better and better.
Study areas: We have 15 conference rooms that have a huge conference table, ten or so chairs, two large white boards, and a huge LCD TV that you can hook your laptop up to in order to watch lectures or look at study aides. The undergrad library (in a separate building) has a special section for medical students. I haven't been there personally but the pictures of it are really nice with comfy chairs and cute study tables. Also there are tons of tables and chairs outside that you could study at as well as two balcony areas.
My only con is there aren't any quiet individual study areas at the moment. I like to mostly study alone so I'd like to have a little desk/cubicle area to study in. This problem will soon be resolved though because they are building a new study room on the 4th floor that will be for individual study. I'm sure it will be available by the time the next class starts.
Social scene: I'm married so I don't really go to the bars that often. But by the looks of facebook photos it seems that a good majority of the class hangs out at the two bars in Cumberland Gap. Just last weekend they had a Toga Party. Other than those two bars you have to travel to Knoxville for restaurants, clubs, and more bars. I have a group of married friends and after each test we make a trip to Knoxville and go to dinner at a nice restaurant. Another thing is there is a ton of outdoor activities to do around here. I know people that go hiking, camping, bike riding, etc. No matter what type of activity you are looking for I'm sure you can find a group of friends here that like to do what you do.
Other Stuff:
Housing: There are student apartments 5 mins away from the school. I don’t live there because I’m married and have pets but I know a lot of people do live there. They have a pool, volley ball court, basketball court, and a workout room. The price is reasonable because it includes all utilities. I think it’s a great option if you live alone.
Lots of apartments have been built in the area and they fill up as soon as they are built. I am sure more will be coming since there is a demand. The only housing problem is if you own pets. I also know people that have bought houses in the area. Depending on what yours needs are will decide how hard it is to find a place to live.
Dress Code: We have one but it's not that bad. You can wear jeans!!! No t-shirts, no flip-flops, no tank tops/tube tops. So guys can wear jeans, khakis, dress pants with a polo or button up shirt. Girls have it a little easier because we tend to have a lot more options. For anatomy lab you have to wear scrubs and for OMM lab you can wear any shorts and t-shirt (not too short or controversial Ts)
Security: You get an ID swipe card. The building is open during business hours but after 4:30 you have to swipe to get in. Also the labs and conference rooms have to be swiped to get into. We have a security guard after hours. The building is 24 hours except on Friday and Saturday night when it closes from 12am-6am. It's really nice when you want to stay late and study.
Parking: Is not a problem. I think no matter where you park it wouldn't be more than a two minute walk. They added even more spaces to the parking lot and I have never seen it fill up.
Food and Drink: We have a large break area on the second floor. It has two fridges for our use, two microwaves, a coffee maker, ice machine,
toaster, two drinks machines, and two snack machines. We don't have our own cafeteria but you can walk about 5 minutes down the hill to the undergrad cafeteria. I haven't personally been so I'm not sure what the food is like but you can buy a meal plan if that's what you like.
In the lectures halls you can only have drinks in closed containers (coffee mugs, bottles, etc). Everywhere else in the building you can have food and drink. It's really nice to be able to sit in the conference rooms and bring in your dinner or lunch while studying.
Attendance: Attendance is required for all labs. Lecture attendance is not required but it is highly advised that you do attend. They could send around a sign in sheet or have a quiz that you won’t want to miss. Also any small group work is required attendance. So I know some people that would rather study at home so it really is what works best for you.
Technology: We receive a laptop. They are awesome tablet notebooks. During lecture you can take all of your notes on the tablet screen. Drawing on the powerpoints as you go is very helpful feature when teachers point something out during lecture.
All of our lectures are recorded and available to watch online. You can watch the speaker with the powerpoint lecture. This is really nice if you do happen to miss a lecture, you don’t pay attention during lecture, or if you miss something said. The feature I really like about this is I can watch the lectures on double speed.
The entire building has wifi. The conference rooms have large flat screen TVs to hook your laptop up to. The labs have multiple flat screen TVs so you never miss what’s going. There are flat screen TVs everywhere in this building lol.
Admin: The same rules that any school has. I think by this point you should understand how to behave yourself.
Rumors: I can’t really think of anything to put here.
Extra things: It’s a new building so it is very nice! Everything is kept spotless by our amazing cleaning staff (who by the way are very friendly).
We have an out-patient clinic on the second floor. If you get the school provided insurance you can visit the clinic with no co-pay. This is so nice when you get sick because it is not hard to get an appointment. Also your family can use the clinic. I think that in your second year here you shadow in the clinic for a certain amount of hours per semester. I know that at my last doctor’s appointment I had second years in the room (don’t worry they ask if it’s ok).
If you do fail a test you get assigned a free tutoring group.

Dr. Toaster 09-30-2008, 11:21 AM Okay, we need to have a bubble tea workshop. We can make it ourselves and sample all the different flavors. OMT/Bubble tea night, anyone? haha
Yes!!!
doodlesmcdoodle 09-30-2008, 01:58 PM So I'm just now doing my secondary (yes, i realize this is a bit late) and I am having trouble with the PDF. As in, when I try to type in my responses, the boxes for them are in a spot where the line is going right through my responses. Did anyone else have this problem and if so, how did you deal with it? Thanks!!!
godsfshrmn 09-30-2008, 02:00 PM Hm not sure about that one. You can always print out a copy and fill in the blanks that way.

If you do, please bring one by the store. I'd love to try one.
ThePiratesse 09-30-2008, 04:38 PM Great write-up Malisa!
I just wanted to add to the housing comment because I have pets and and had to find housing options outside of those provided for by the school. Malisa is right, it can be tricky finding a great place when you have pets, but like she said, there is new stuff being built all the time. One advantage of SDN is that hopefully some of us can steer y'all toward good landlords and available places. When it comes time to start looking for a place to live, don't be afraid to make a post here to ask for numbers and referals for places to rent. I have great landlords here in Middlesboro, with really cheap rent and a pretty decently sized place... and they love to rent to med students! Good luck to everybody!:luck:
cassrae 10-03-2008, 09:25 PM I really just wanted to post on here because no one has in a few days- and I don't want the DCOM thread to be lost!
And I wanted to say good writeup Malisa :) And, I'll also commented on housing. I do not live in the student apartments- I was going to- but then my roommie (Prions) found an awesome apartment in Cumberland Gap. We are really happy here, and we just got a new puppy! Our landlady originally said no pets, but she was pretty accommodating when we asked if we could get one. Most people I know who live in the student apartments really like them, but I'm glad I decided not to live there- it's nice to have more space- and to be within walking distance to the two "bars"- both in the gap- the "Loose Caboose" and the "UNC" (our very own night club... hahaha) Y'all will understand once you see.
JasonI 10-04-2008, 04:43 AM Y'all will understand once you see.
I don't know. I've been there a few times and I'm still not sure I understand.

Does DCOM tell me when I'm complete or do I need to call them to check?
Thanks!
I don't think I ever got notified for being complete until my call for an interview.
I'll head out the for the interview on the 13th. Is anyone going to be at the pizza night for the 12th? I noticed a few going this week and on the night of the 13th. I'll definitely be there. PM me if you're heading over on the 12th.

malisa 10-05-2008, 04:40 PM Depending on whats going on it could be as soon as a week. I think on average though it's two weeks. Longest wait of your life lol. Good luck everyone interviewing :luck:

Yeah, it all depends on what Dr. Stower's has going on. When he's out of town or really busy, or if your interview is right before a holiday, it can take longer than a couple of weeks to hear anything. Just write a follow up letter to your interviewers (by email so it gets there in time) and keep your phone on you! Good luck at your interview! :luck:
P.S. Is anyone interviewing on November 3rd? I'll be at Oasis on the 2nd to answer your questions :D

The Letter J 10-06-2008, 02:50 PM Just to let anybody know, I just got home from interviewing and they told us it would take 2 weeks to hear anything and that it would be by mail. They also told us that they can't tell us over the phone if we got in or not.

I guess they changed from last year because I know last year most people were called if they were accepted. How did your interview go? I hope you don't go crazy waiting for a decision.

They are not calling to notify for acceptances anymore? Thats strange, did they give a reason?
JasonI 10-06-2008, 03:52 PM They are not calling to notify for acceptances anymore? Thats strange, did they give a reason?

PupsterDO 10-06-2008, 05:53 PM Vita, did you interview at AZCOM on 9/19?
The Letter J 10-06-2008, 06:05 PM To answer multiple questions, (lol) after Janette said that we would be notified via snail mail, we asked about a phone call and she said that she wouldn't be able to let us know by phone. I'm not sure of the reason for any change.
I did well, I think. For the most part, I said everything I wanted to say and got a chance to ask most of what I wanted to ask. I was supposed to be the third interviewee in my group, but the second girl was not there so I went second. I interviewed for about an hour even though everyone else seemed to interview for 30 minutes due to the extra time being available.
I was interviewed by Dr. Zajac and Dr. Fitzovich (Ph.D). I enjoyed the interview. The interview should be easy as long as you are honest and know what you want.
Good luck Ali!:luck:
Vita, did you interview at AZCOM on 9/19?
Nope, was there some other girl with short black hair named Vita?
missdochopeful 10-06-2008, 07:33 PM To answer multiple questions, (lol) after Janette said that we would be notified via snail mail, we asked about a phone call and she said that she wouldn't be able to let us know by phone. I'm not sure of the reason for any change.
Oh, she probably meant the admissions office couldn't give you an information over the phone, but I bet Dean Stowers will still make acceptance calls.
Can't wait to meet you SoccerChic!
And Malisa, there will be a special table for you at Oasis... in the corner
The Letter J 10-06-2008, 07:43 PM Oh, she probably meant the admissions office couldn't give you an information over the phone, but I bet Dean Stowers will still make acceptance calls.
Well, unless the past two classes have gotten letters as well as phone calls then that is not at all what she was saying. She was adamant that we would find out by mail only. I even gave her my address again so that she could make sure she had my correct address.
Oh well, hopefully Ali or someone else can spread some light on this after their interview.

Yeah, in the past they sent letters to everyone and Dean Stowers had additionally called those who were accepted. But it's possible he isn't calling anyone this year. I know last year there were many people waiting on pins and needles for Dr. Stowers to get back in town so he could make calls.
malisa 10-06-2008, 08:08 PM Well I guess if you do get a call it will be a pleasant surprise!
And Amanda I know you will sit at the special table with me so what does it really matter
koojo 10-06-2008, 08:25 PM When I got a notice for an interview, it was over the phone. Now whenever I get an out-of-state phone call on my cell, I get all excited... It happened today, until I answered the phone and it was a phone survey call....boooooo
forks4spoons 10-07-2008, 07:00 AM Dr. Leo (Didn't realize he was asst. dean, so I edited that) is coming from LMU today to talk to students at my university (TTU). I plan on going early so that I may speak with him.
Anyone have any pointers for what to talk about? Should I try to sell myself to him or just ask him questions about the school? I've never done this before. :/
Forks. Just ask questions.
Otherwise, it was nice meeting all of the folks that interviewed yesterday. Hope you enjoyed your day. Let me know if you think of any questions.

forks 4spoons-
ask him what makes DCOM special (of course, do it in the way that is inquisitive... "I'm really interested in DCOM. Why is it the best school for me... ask him what you can do to make yourself competitive/what you can do to get in... He is there to promote DCOM, so know that going in. Ask about the curriculum... bottom line... what do YOU want to know about DCOm? That's what you should ask... just talk with him. He is a great guy, so make it a conversation, not a 20 questions moment.
Hope that helps...
forks4spoons 10-07-2008, 02:53 PM Thanks, Alabamacub!
Today went quite well. He came in early to talk to some of the freshmen pre-med students and through my old Orgo prof/premed advisor, I got the skinny on him being there. :)
I was really taken aback by the technology that LMU has. It blew my mind. I'm a total techie, so LMU is definitely right up my alley. I'm filling out my secondary tonight (per his request, even though I haven't been verified) and sending it out tomorrow.
And, I agree, he's a very cool guy! I liked talking with him. I think all the little froshies were a bit intimidated by him, but believe me, I had plenty of questions. A little one on one time at the end, but the majority of our conversation was during his panel.
Yeah LMU! I'm liking it! Now I've just gotta get this stinkin' MCAT score back. Grrr..
Thanks, Alabamacub!

forks4spoons 10-08-2008, 06:54 AM Ah, okay.. so, I pretty much had a meltdown last night after I got my MCAT score back. :(
I made a 23P... 6PS, 8 BS, 9VR.
I have a 3.51 science, and 3.53 overall (per AACOMAS).. and a few EC's, including working for a cardiology clinic for three years.
I know this isn't a what are my chances thread, but since I'm interested in DCOM, I thought I'd post here first.

I got a 22N on the MCAT (8 PS, 8 BS, 6 VR ...damn verbal) because I screwed it up...I was getting 29's on the practice exams...but anyway, so far, I got interviews at 3 schools, including DCOM, and an acceptance at WVSOM. But I also have experience due to my role as a medic in the military. You shouldn't loose hope. I would definitely try.

There have been people who have been accepted with higher, the same, and lower scores than that. All you can do is see what happens. Your GPA is good and it sounds like you've had some good experience. Remember, it's about the total package (and a little luck) when it comes to applying to MS.
Just wondering...what's the avg. score on the MCAT now?
Just FYI, the last 2 classes at DCOM have had around a 24-25 average, so you're in the ballpark.

Don't worry about it too much (I know...easier said than done). LMU dropped off some packets of information at my school. In the packet, it says that the average mcat for the class of 2012 was 24.4; mean cum GPA was 3.38; mean non-science GPA was 3.5; mean science GPA was 3.27. I think that you stand a good chance. And koojo is right, it's the total package. Your mcat is not too far off from their average.
Good luck

take heart... apply! There is no "score" you have to get. You are more than your MCAT scores, your grades, and your extracurriculars... be confident that what you want to do is what you want to do it and pursue it. There are very few people who get what they want on the MCAT.
aliDO 10-09-2008, 07:33 AM Well, unless the past two classes have gotten letters as well as phone calls then that is not at all what she was saying. She was adamant that we would find out by mail only. I even gave her my address again so that she could make sure she had my correct address.
Oh well, hopefully Ali or someone else can spread some light on this after their interview.
she said at my interview that Dr. Stowers can make phone calls if he wants and that he likes to do that. she said don't freak out if you don't get a call though. the admissions committee is meeting today, so i guess we'll see soon!

forks4spoons 10-09-2008, 09:54 PM Who better to ask than you lovelies that are at/potentially at LMU!
The secondary instructions say to write "short" essays.
How short was "short" for you?
Essay 1 for me is 2/3 of a page while essay 2 is almost a full page. Is this too much? too little?
I want to make sure I get it right! :)
Thanks in advance!
sobe15 10-10-2008, 04:49 AM Each of my essays was just over a page. I think they just want to be able to read enough to get a picture of who you are.

Read through the interview feedback and read through their website. You'll also learn some new things about the school technologically during the tour. However, the most important thing is to read the questions on the interview feedback page and at least have an idea of how you might answer. Chances are that you'll get a lot of questions that were on the interview feedback. I know I did. Good luck!:luck:

I would keep these two things in mind while you are here. First this school was built in a rural area to serve the rural population. They do not expect every student to practice rural family medicine but it is the focus. Also, the school is very proud of the locals and the acceptance we've been given and the locals are very proud of the school and the opportunity it brings to the local area. It has been my experience this school is not looking for ego's and inflated self-opinions. The majority of both classes are well adjusted friendly people who will help other classmates in need. We are not a school of gunners using each other for a better residency lol. Finally (ok that's 3 things...sorry) be your self this interview is low stress and they are not trying to trip you up, just find out who you are. Come to the Oasis pizza thing and get to know a few students, it will relax you and give you a better sense of what your walking into tomorrow.
Good luck!!!!

I think your good....If this was January or February I would feel differently. The few days at this point in the interview season isn't gonna kill your chances...probably not even hurt them lol.
Good Luck!!!

Be sure you know what Osteopathic Medicine is, how it differs from Allopathic Medicine, and why you would want to be a D.O. Just Google it and learn about it. There really isn't a right answer, per se, but they want you to be able to verbalize what it is and why we think it is an advantage.
Other than that, you've got to be yourself. It does you and them no good to be somebody you aren't. If you get in because you just want to get in and not because you like the school/ the area / etc., you'll be miserable.
Most of all, as much as you can (and you can, believe me)... ENJOY IT!!!!! Have fun in your interviews. What could be better than having the opportunity to interview... to go to medical school! You'll work hard in school... more than you ever thoiught you could. But you'll also have a lot of fun, learn a lot, and be read to go out and do something bigger than yourself. Any other questions, you can post or pm me. Do your best!

Ok, so I double-checked, and looked to see what time I'm supposed to be there when I actually signed up for pizza night, and that is 6:30, so I would get there before the interviewees showed up. SO, for all you interviewees out there, it starts at 7 pm. But Hippiechick, I am so down to go early.. me and the roommie have got nothing going on after she's done with her practical at 5:20 sooo if you see her talk to her about it.. or you can stop by our apt beforehand too for a little celebration :D

Yeah, I'd guess they'd have to send the letters out tomorrow or wednesday if they expect the letters to make it to most of the interviewers by the end of the week. So you'd think that they would be ready to start calling people tomorrow or the next day.

No, nothing. Janette said we would know by mail at the end of this week and that's what I'm sticking to. If it comes earlier it'll be a nice surprise. If it comes at the beginning of next week or something then it'll have only been 2 weeks.
Didn't most of the other people who got accepted at DCOM on here find out in 2 weeks, even if they were called by phone?

At the interview yesterday, Janette said the committee meets every Thursday to discuss that weeks interviewee's. After that, it takes about 2 weeks to receive their decision in your mailbox. If you haven't heard anything by 2 weeks you can call Janette and have her send you the letter again. She can't tell you whether you've been accepted over the phone.

Well, I really can't answer your 2nd question because we first years haven't had any physiology lectures yet, but I will take a stab at your second question! :D
I really like the anatomy lab and am so glad we do prosection rather than dissection. I know other students at other medical schools who have to spend alot of extra time on dissecting their bodies, whereas we go into lab and we can get right down to business finding stuff. There has been a few lab sessions however where we expected to dissect during lab time (and on our own time to make sure it was complete). We did this for our lower limb segment and we also dissected out the lungs and heart. As second years I believe we can apply to be TA's and do the dissections and prepare the bodies for the new first years...maybe someone in the second year can clarify this because Im not sure how it works exactly?
During lab hours the class is divided up into four groups that rotate during the afternoon on lab days (usually twice a week), each group getting an hour of lab time for that day. There are 8 bodies so you end up with about 6 people per body. I have never felt like it was too crowded or that I couldn't see anything. The only time lab gets crowded is right before a test whenever comes in after school hours to study the bodies.
Hope that helps!

Do you think that you might be somewhat missing out by not doing dissections since during your 3rd and 4th year you'll have to do surgery, where you'll probably have to cut the through the skin/fat/fascia many times?

aliDO 10-15-2008, 07:32 PM Ya, Janette said the dean didn't allow it yet to the public.
I interviewed the second day so maybe they've changed it since then. We went in two groups and the student that led our group let us in. I thought it was really nice. It also had an amazing mural. You can google several articles written about the mural. Anyway, that's weird they wouldn't let you in.

That looks nice. How many total cadavers are there in the lab?
HippieChick 10-15-2008, 07:37 PM Do you think that you might be somewhat missing out by not doing dissections since during your 3rd and 4th year you'll have to do surgery, where you'll probably have to cut the through the skin/fat/fascia many times?
I think thats why they give us the opportunity to do dissections if we want to in our 2nd year if we are interested, and also why they give us a chance to do some our first year too. But cutting into a cadaver, from my own experiance, is so unlike cutting through fresh tissue. But this is just my opinion!
HippieChick 10-15-2008, 07:55 PM That looks nice. How many total cadavers are there in the lab?
There are 8 divided up amoungst us students, but I know there is at least 1 other body that they keep in the back and bring out for exams, anyone know if there is more than 9?
I just wanted to add to what I said about dissection, I am sure that if you want to go into say surgery that dissection can be a big help and thats why the opportunity is there if you want it. Im sure other people have opinions on this so hopefully they will chime in as well! But the embalming process really changes the tissues, for some labs and exams they bring in fresh animal organs and tissues so we can see really just how different fresh tissue is, there is a big difference.
pianoman90 10-15-2008, 08:22 PM Thought I'd chime in here...I actually was verified yesterday and have sent my secondary to LMU today, so hopefully I will be blessed with an interview.
We had 2 cadavers in my undergrad anatomy class that we used. There were 16 people in the class, or 8 to a cadaver. I never in any way felt cramped or "left out" when dissecting, so if LMU has 6 people to a cadaver, I wouldn't worry about it.
I also agree with HippieChick - cutting into a cadaver is far different from that of a real person. However, dissecting may help you to get accustomed to using/holding scalpels and using a bone saw or other instruments.

Where are you from? Just asking because you profile says Alabama and I'm from there and I went to UAB and we had cadavers. Anyways good luck hope you get an interview soon.

I graduated from Samford this past spring, and I'm taking post-bac classes right now at Samford and UAB. I discovered the world of DO a few months ago, which is absolutely amazing, but I wish I had considered it this time last year. If I had, I may actually be in med school right now!
Limvostov 10-16-2008, 08:11 AM I work with a guy from Harrogate and the more he tells me about the area the more I look forward to this interview. I am really excited about having a chance to go here...any I know my wife will be happy here as well. :) The pictures of the anatomy lab are great...better looking than any of the others I have have seen yet. Only a couple more weeks !!!

Oh I wish you had discovered it before too we could have been classmates. I knew nothing about DO until my pre-med advisor told me to apply to DO schools lol. So I did some research then I shadowed a great DO at UAB. Anyways have fun in Birmingham while you're there you may end up missing it if you have to move (I know I am).

Congrats!!! It is so exciting getting interview invites. You should go read the interview feedback if you havent already it's a big help. And good luck on Monday!
tallgal0523 10-16-2008, 10:43 AM I called LMU today to see if they were still reviewing my file and they told me they reviewed it but I'm on hold...they said I'm not rejected but that they want to see other applicants first before they decide to give me an interview or not....did this happen to ANYONE else??? I'm scared that this will happen to every school I applied to. :(

It happens to many people. Write them a letter of intent. You can search this forum to learn more about it. good luck, and hang in there!
Limvostov 10-16-2008, 12:44 PM Vcom put me on hold and I wrote a short...very short letter of interest and I was offered an interview shortly after. Sometimes I think if you are on the edge of competitive it takes a little extra interest on your part to get a foot in the door. Good Luck!!!

Pianoman-
I graduated from Samford in 2004. I was a Sigma Chi, as well as an Ambassador and a member of A Cappella Choir for a couple of years. You definitely need to apply up here to DCOM. IT is a great school, so long as you know you are moving to Big Orange Country. Let me know if you have any questions

catchburns 10-16-2008, 03:03 PM Hey, I just had my interview on the 13th and thought you guys might want to hear how it all went. First of all, let me say that I was absolutely blown away by the area! It is beyond beautiful and the people are great too. It is right in the middle of the mountains so there is plenty of hiking trails and outdoorsy stuff to do. Harrogate is pretty small but its only about an hour to Knoxville (which is also way better than I expected) and Middlesboro is only 5 minutes from Harrogate. Middlesboro has pretty much everything you'd need - Walmart, groceries, movie theater, etc
The interview process was great as well. The staff were extremely friendly and the students were very helpful. I highly recommend going to the pizza night before if you can. It helped reduce the anxiety. The interview was more like a conversation than what I expected. It lasted about 30 minutes and both interviewers were quite pleasant. Most of their questions had to do with my essays but I guess a few other people had some ethical questions too (I didn't). It was very low stress and everyone made the process very comfortable.
The school is also tops. The facilities are brand new and very nice. The are also very on top of technology.
Anyways, DCOM skyrocketed to the top of my wish list after this interview. If I get accepted, I won't even go to the rest of my interviews. That's how great it was!
Anyways, hope that helps. Feel free to PM me if you have specific q's about how the whole thing goes.

Awesome - I hope you are accepted :D I felt the same way after I interviewed here. I withdrew all my other applications after I was accepted. It's a great school - I love it!
Just to add my two cents on the dissection/prosection debate. We had one lab in which we were responsible for dissecting the lower limb and it was my least favorite because it took 4 times as long as the others and the majority of the time was spent just getting through fat and fascia. I think time is much better spent identifying structures at the point we are at as first year students.

Don't worry! It's very common. I agree that you should mail the admissions office a letter of intent and be sure to keep them updated with anything you do between now and enrollment that could enhance your file (i.e. new grades, jobs, medical activities, service projects, etc.) It's still quite early in the process, so don't get bummed. I remember that I applied to 10 schools in August and didn't hear from anyone about interviewing until January! Good luck to you! :luck:

This. I don't think the purpose of lab is for any sort of surgical prep because the tissues are so much different from what you really find in surgery. I tend to think that lab is more for helping us establish relationships between structures in a given area so that when we actually recognize something in surgery we have an idea of what SHOULD be around it.
Also, You're never crowded in lab. Even when it is close to test time it really isnt that bad. 8 cadavers is more than enough.

Totally agree, lab is about learning anatomy! No one should feel worried that because we have prosection they will be missing out in any way and be unprepared for rotations!

Thought I would chime in too :) I am SO SO thankful that we have prosected bodies. I got plenty of dissecting experience when we did the lower limb and the thorax. You learn way more efficiently when you don't have to do all the dissecting yourself- otherwise we would be in there way more than we really have time for, taking time away from studying everything else we need to learn. And I think the anatomy labs are beautiful. We really have nice stuff. For those who could not tour.. maybe it was this past monday? If so, we had our anatomy lab practical so they were probably setting that up.
And I believe we have 10 bodies total- 8 for the lab, then 2 they could pull out during exams. And 8 bodies is plenty for everyone to be able to see everything they need to, and to be able to see variations in structures from body to body.

Hi bluelaguna,
I believe when admissions receives your file, it is reviewed then you are either offered an interview, declined, or put on hold. Basically if you are on hold, that means the school is still interested, but wants to see how the application cycle is going to pan out. You could be on hold for just a couple of weeks or a few months. Sometimes there is a specific reason your file is put on hold and you can find out if there is one by calling the admissions office. My file was on hold last year until I finished my final semester of undergrad and submitted my grades. Basically, you want to keep them updated and make sure they know you are very interested in the school and would like to interview there. It's certainly early in the cycle and I would not consider being on hold a bad sign at this point. It's definitely not a rejection. Good luck to you! :luck:
JagerDO 10-18-2008, 01:51 AM Tallgal and Bluelaguna...
I emailed Janette and asked the status of my app and to make sure they had received all my materials. I mailed everything 10-2 and sent the email yesterday. She told me I was complete and my application was under review. Not sure if that is the same as hold or if they just haven't got to mine yet. :luck:

I called a few weeks ago (Sept.30) to check on the status of my application and was told I was complete. She also told me my file was under review and the admissions committee would probably review it within the next 2 weeks. So the admissions committee is probably in the process of reviewing yours and I don't think it's the same as hold.
Your application can be put on hold once it has been already reviewed by the admissions committee. I think that's how it works. Good luck!
Thanks for the reply missdochopeful!

Bluelaguna is right. If they have not already reviewed your application then you are not on hold. After they review your application they will choose to give you an interview or put you on hold. If they have not contacted you in a week I would call them to see if they have gotten to your application yet. Good luck :luck:

LMAO. I just got waitlisted, and I am in-state only 2 hours from the school. I also want to practice medicine rurally in this area. Guess that just goes to show that nothing is a given. I really hope that everyone that gets an acceptance from here on out wants to give something back to our community here.
Time to fill out my other secondaries. Congrats aliDO!!!
Don't worry Letter J :( I bet you are pretty high on the waitlist - you interviewed very early. I would write a letter of intent to the admissions office just to emphasize your interest and, like I told bluelaguna, keep them updated with anything that can enhance your file. I remember being really bummed about not getting into a particular school, but then I interviewed here and I can't see myself anywhere else. Things have a way of working out the way they are supposed to and you may find that there is another school that fits you best. Of course, I hope it ends up being here! Best wishes and don't give up hope :)

I was waitlisted last november and I was called january 3rd with my acceptance. You still have a chance. I don't know if you have other places to interview at or not but if you do good luck with those places. Hopefully something will work out and you won't have to be in limbo for too long.
