travoltage 06-02-2008, 07:42 AM Hey everyone, will be applying to CCOM this summer...my #1 choice school. Hope everyone is enjoying their summer! Im not...lol, taking my mcat july 10th and hoping to kill it to get to CCOM
DarkHorizon 06-02-2008, 08:13 AM .
Bond8204 06-02-2008, 08:18 AM CCOM is also my first choice, my stats: Overall GPA 3.36, science GPA 3.47, MCAT 30Q. What are my chances?
With some good clinical and non-clinical EC's, good letters of rec, submitting your AACOMAS and supplementaries in a timely fashion, you should stand a very good chance at admission.
travoltage 06-02-2008, 12:06 PM my stats: overall: 3.31, science: 3.24, mcat: july 10th (hoping for at least a 27), lots of EC's, good strong LORs including preceptors and board of director at CCOM, hopefully will be complete by august...my gpa is kind of weak, i got lot of B's, im praying ill get in lol
Chicago Person 06-03-2008, 05:35 PM CCOM is my top choice as well.
Their website states that a GPA above 3.0 (science and cumulative) is needed to be considered competitive, so I think you guys are fine in that department. And the average MCAT of the 2007 entering class was 27. All this is on their website (http://www.midwestern.edu/ccom/), I just thought I'd post here for reference. Best of luck to all those applying, hopefully I'll see some of you class and we can talk about how we were worrisome pre-meds a long, long time ago.

Haha, from what I hear from current med students, it increases exponentially in med school. I believe it. This process can definitely be crappy, but try to enjoy your senior year or your last year out of the books (if you're non-trad) while going through it, guys :)
travoltage 06-04-2008, 03:28 PM i cant, i need to continue studying to raise my gpa....if for some reason i dont get into ccom, nycom, pcom, umdnj ill be reapplying, i know people say apply broadly and with my stats i should not be too picky, but i dont want to leave chicago for any reason at the moment, residency i wouldnt care, but for med school i want to go to ccom and if that means reapplying another time, im gonna keep on doing that till i get into ccom or one of the four schools i listed, i have strong reasons why i want to stay which i just dont feel like explaining at the moment, :o
udsoccer7 06-04-2008, 06:26 PM Hey Travoltage-
I had similiar stats and got into CCOM. 3.4 gpa 27 MCAT lots of clinical and research experience and real strong LORs. If you apply early enough and interview well you should be able to get in. For the record, I think that if you limit yourself to those four schools you could be shooting yourself in the foot. Getting into medical school is a very difficult process with a lot of variables that are completely out of your control. Even if you kick *** on everything it doesn't guarantee you a spot at any school. Although I don't know your reasoning for only applying to four schools, I'd suggest (and I'm sure many others who have gotten in would also agree) to apply broadly. If you get secondaries and interviews at the schools you are interested in, you don't have to send the other secondaries to the lower interest schools but I'd definitely include them in your aacomas application. BTW, the schools that you have ranked high before your interviews could end up being lower on your list in the end which is another reason to apply broadly. Many recently accepted students will tell you this as well. CCOM was one of these for me. Best of luck to you.

Chicago Person 06-05-2008, 01:19 PM Anyone know:
a) how many/what percentage of applicants are invited for interviews?
b) what percentage of interviewees are given acceptances?
travoltage 06-05-2008, 02:56 PM Anyone know:

b) what percentage of interviewees are given acceptances?
im not sure about a), but i have a few friends who attend ccom, and they interview students all the time. a friend of mine from there said that for b), its like 70% or something close to it. those are good odds in your favor.
Chicago Person 06-10-2008, 10:21 AM 70%...very nice.
FuturePharm21 06-10-2008, 01:08 PM is CCOM still ONLY 160 seats, when are the increasing the class size, just wondering, since i hear all med schools were increasing class sizes very soon....lol make it now, haha
Bacchus 06-12-2008, 09:05 PM Applied, 3.51 OA, 3.47 science, 26R. Definitely a school I could see myself going to. Move to a new city? Sure.

RealDream 06-14-2008, 07:27 PM I m applying to ccom, its one of my top chioce, i love the school and i loveeeeeeeeeeeeee the city of chicagoooooo...wishing eveyone the bets of luck , hey we might be classmates, who knows..:)
RealDream 06-14-2008, 07:30 PM anyone knows, how many ppl they accept in state and how many ppl they accept out state ( on average )?
FuturePharm21 06-14-2008, 09:55 PM midwestern is a private college meaning it doesn't show preference to ppl from IL so it varies
TexasTriathlete 06-14-2008, 10:19 PM A lot of private schools will still show a state preference. At some schools, it is very strong, at other schools, it is not as strong.

travoltage 06-14-2008, 11:25 PM actually, well i guess from what ive heard, ccom has strong preference toward in state students however im sure if you have good stats...where your from really shouldnt matter..

FuturePharm21 06-17-2008, 07:51 PM whats a competitive gpa/mcat score to get at least an interview at ccom?
RealDream 06-17-2008, 08:16 PM Okay ladies and gentleman..or let just say friends...lol

On their website I found the following information:
General Requirements:
Bachelor's degree
Minimum total and science GPA of 2.75
MCAT scores
Two letters of recommendation
Where did you see a requirement for a 3.0? Please, enlighten me.

your right only a 2.75 is needed for the supplemental app, but the higher, the better so 3.0 and up would be recommended but not required

Hi
i got this line from their website
"To be competitive, an applicant should possess both a science and total GPA over 3.00 on a 4.00 scale"
The question was originally asked about what would be compitive in getting an interview:
To be competitive u need at least a 3.0 science Gpa (thats what i meant), But they will look at ur application if ur gpa is higher or at 2.75, but then ur MCAT score must be really high.
Best of luck to u..

yeah....that website hasnt been updated in ages. I don't think a 3.0 will cut it at all, ( 2.75, keep dreaming ) unless youre rolling in with a 29+ MCAT or something wild on your file.
Chuck's Right Foot 06-24-2008, 04:25 PM I'm applying to 6 DO schools, CCOM/MWU is definitely one of them!

Only 1650 applicants? Neighboring MD schools got 4 or 5 times that many applicants in the last cycle! I'm willing to bet those applicant numbers now are much higher than they were five years ago. Yet the future does seem bright for in-staters. What about In-City applicants? If I'd known this sooner I would have moved down the street from CCOM and been an In-Neighborhood applicant. They probably all get accepted.
Bond8204 06-25-2008, 06:39 PM 2003 was 5 years ago. Around that time MD schools' stats were looking about what osteo schools' stats are starting to look like right now. I would be very very surprised if the number of total applicants was still below 2000.
travoltage 06-25-2008, 08:59 PM i saw a published link somewhere, ill try to find it again, think last year there were like around 4500 applicants, maybe a little less
Chicago Person 06-26-2008, 02:20 PM 4500 applicants for 170 seats. I get a queasy feeling in my stomach when I look at those numbers.

True, but I bet you they accept about at least double the number of seats in the class.
Columbia, for example, accepted 286 and only 155 enrolled.

Welcome to applying to med school, man. And to be fair, as was somewhat said above, I'm sure of those 4500 applications, some didn't complete the secondary, some were accepted to allopathic schools or other osteopathic schools and declined acceptances AND interview invites.
cbrons 06-26-2008, 05:52 PM CCOM looked pretty sweet; I went on a tour last week. Nice area too. Its not as busy as Chicago, believe me that's the best part. But its still pretty urban.
Bond8204 06-26-2008, 06:33 PM But its still pretty urban.
it's suburban, no two ways about it. But DG has a metra train directly to the city with plenty of parking, I believe, and the clinical rotation sites are located throughout chicagoland, including the city. A lot of students end up in the surrounding suburbs or Oak Park, which is just a few minutes away from the city (with no traffic). My tour guide even said he and a few friends were moving into lincoln park (trendy young professional northside neighborhood of chicago) for their 3rd year.

Always remember what the late George Carlin said
"Think of how stupid the average person is, and then realize that half of them are stupider than that"

Chicago Person 07-12-2008, 09:20 AM Probably a question better suited for one of the "secondary application" threads, but I thought I'd ask:
Anyone received a secondary for CCOM yet? If so, when did you submit your primary. I'm beginning to get a little antsy in my pantsy.

I think that's the record.

That is why I didn't apply there. I didn't have enough of an interest to live IN NYC. But it is a supposedly good sign if they send you a secondary. A medical school would NEVER send you a secondary just for the fee....that is unfathomable. *cough*
I wonder if I'll get the CCOM application soon. I guess I'd need to revise my resume just a bit, but I suggest they aren't business people and I can remove the various coding and tech things I do.

Yea..the clause doesn't bother me, so I applied. I grew up in the midwest. Parts of Ohio are only a couple hours from family. Anyway, kind of my fault that it got off topic. So lets keep it to ccom! :p
Chocolate Bear 07-23-2008, 07:27 PM I haven't visited yet, but CCOM seems like a great place. I absolutely love Chi town, and this place seems to be an optimal distance away from the city so as to avoid the terribleness that is Chicago traffic/parking, but close enough to have fun on the weekends. Anyone have thoughts? Visited?

Bacchus, I heard about this! I can't remember which schools specifically! Can anyone explain the specifics of this "fine print"? I'm really interested to hear about it...not because I applied to OUCOM or anything.

Their site is very vague about this, and apparently it's not as bad as we think/thought. But it's something along the lines of having to practice in Ohio for 5 years post-residency. There are ways out of it, though. One costs a few hundred grand, and the other involves, I don't know, primary care or something??? Can someone fill in the details, please?

live about 20 mins away. have family in downer's grove, which is your pretty typical chicago suburb. but, it's close to the city, and (i'm biased, but) chicago is THE BEST CITY to live in! there's something for everyone. for people from warmer climates though, it may take a while to get used to the cold cold cold winters, especially since chicago winters go through half of what is supposed to be spring.
and you're right about parking and all in the city, avoid driving if/when you can. the CTA is your friend.

Yeah I've spent several long weekends there and could absolutely live there! What's Downer's Grove like? Is the school adjacent to suburbs? Did I read something about it being surrounded by woods? What else can you tell us?
Thanks for the input!

sorry CB thats the best i can do for now! ive never been there in my life.
Bacchus 07-23-2008, 08:38 PM I don't want to retract from this thread anymore but the paper contract and the online description for OUCOM do not jive in my opinion. I have emailed them and will post to the OUCOM thread regarding this when I get an response. I'm hoping I get CCOM's secondary soon.
Lolo1982 07-24-2008, 06:31 AM Does anyone know if this really means characters? 1500 characters is not a lot. 1500 words is quite a lot.
I'm banking on characters.

BTW the record high density of Sears Catalog Homes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sears_Catalog_Home) and the fact that Macho Man Randy Savage graduated HS there have practically got me packing my bags, already!

yea, there are lots of woody areas. it's your basic upper middle-class suburb-- its a SW suburb, about 50 mins away from the heart of downtown chicago and like 40 mins away from o'hare airport. not much to do in the suburb itself, unfortunately, but it has a pretty homey feel

Thanks! Yeah I kinda like living in the suburbs, just because our dogs will likely be much happier. I would like the option of going to the city on the weekends, but 50 min? I was hoping it didn't take that long. Oh well. I don't think I'll be heading to Northwestern any time soon, either...
What's up with DO schools teasing us with cool cities, anyway? I just found out that Touro originally set up shop in San Fran, then moved 2 years later to MI. Lame.
thriftnuh 07-24-2008, 04:48 PM 50 minutes? Is that by train or by car?
MichiganEMTInt 07-24-2008, 04:59 PM 50 minutes? Is that by train or by car?
actually it is a 50 minute walk.
this is unofficial, can anyone confirm?
diggintheDOs 07-24-2008, 06:01 PM car, but more like 40 w/out bad traffic. i'm better with trains/buses in the city, so i'm not sure exactly how to leave downer's grove via public transportation. i believe there is a metra station there that will take you out of the city, and you can easily park at the station to avoid driving in the city.

haha exactly. i agree, its exciting for the first few, but then you wake up to "Please complete this supplemental application in the next 5 minutes, including letters of recommendation, or this computer will self-destruct." and they start to get a little overwhelming.

What's the marriage metaphor for impatiently waiting for a procrastinating DO, when you have applied to several schools that require his letter? That's the stage this admissions marriage is in. Lame. :thumbdown

I'm in your same boat!! I have 11 schools that are waiting on........my DO letter! AND THATS IT! ughhrr! she was supposed to have it on interfolio yesterday! frustrating.
MossPoh 07-26-2008, 05:41 AM I am waiting for a letter especially for CCOM. I have a DO and MD letter already, but this guy was a graduate of CCOM and his super stoked to have me going there, so I'm holding out for a little while.
rgerwin 07-26-2008, 04:58 PM The main downtown station (by the Tivoli) will have express trains during peak hours, and local the rest of the time. Express trains will take ~25min into the city, local 45-60 min(some have more stops than others). Anyway, I grew up in good old DG, so anyone with questions can PM me. Good luck!
diggintheDOs 07-26-2008, 05:38 PM don't worry guys, my school's committee doesn't get letters sent out til MID-AUGUST via virtual evals. and i was pretty much told, though not in these exact words, that students applying to MD schools are first on the list of priorities, so who knows where i even stand
woodhorse22 07-26-2008, 10:19 PM Good luck to everyone who is applying to CCOM this year. I went through the application process last year, so if anyone of you have questions, shoot me a PM. I will be glad to help. Have fun with the applications and remember CCOM is a great school!!!

Lucylu123 07-27-2008, 07:19 AM Are many of the rotations in the city? Or are they more suburban? It would be pretty cool to live at least the 2nd two years closer in to the city!
ronicajay 07-27-2008, 08:47 AM Does anyone know if CCOM offers any sort of preceptor program during the first two years? Or if the curriculum is regular lecture or systems based?
I have been scouring their website for more info....
woodhorse22 07-27-2008, 09:03 AM Are many of the rotations in the city? Or are they more suburban? It would be pretty cool to live at least the 2nd two years closer in to the city!
Most of the rotations are in the city except for some in the suburbs like Cook County Hospital, etc. Living in Chicago is very expensive but then again commuting to Chicago from the suburbs everyday is a pain in the ***.
axylotl 07-27-2008, 05:10 PM Man I am so excited about CCOM. The more I look over their website, the more I want to go. Just submitted their secondary on Friday so here goes :)
Chocolate Bear 07-27-2008, 09:33 PM Anyone care to chime in about how they organized this ridiculous requirement of attaching a CV that contains the EXACT same info as the primary? Except the hobbies, that's new. But come on, just ask that, then!
Specifically:
1. Did you organize it into the same categories listed on the secondary (Edu. history, employment history, medically related work and vol. exp., etc)?
2. Did you repeat any entries (Ex: Listed a clinical job in "employment," "medical work exp," and "leadership")?
This seems like a dumb question, but I'm torn as to how best present this info and whether I need to follow their outline.

I just organized it exactly how they asked for it. I do not think I duplicated anything in categories.. but it was difficult to decide what to put where. I just went with it though.

I haven't tackled their app yet, it is on my plate for tomorrow morning. I already have a resume with most of the info they ask for on it. It is one page. If I am going to squeeze everything they ask for on there while being extremely brief, it will have to be at least 2 pages.
axylotl 07-27-2008, 10:19 PM Mine was 3 pages in length but spaced and organized for easy-viewing :)

Hey Chocolate bear,
My CV last year ended up being exactly one full page. Here is how I organized it:
Name
Address
Education
Honors and Awards
Employment experience
Extracurricular activities
Hobbies
Future Plans
I got this format online from some Formal CV writing website. Honestly, don't worry too much about the format. The above format should do it, but make sure you include everything.
ronicajay 07-28-2008, 07:11 AM mine is about 2 pages, but i didn't use their exact headings...
name
address
education
employment
volunteer activities
shadowing
extracurriculars/hobbies
Chocolate Bear 07-28-2008, 07:17 AM Thanks for the help, folks! Glad to hear I won't be the only one not following their precise, yet nonsensical guidelines.
hypnix 07-29-2008, 07:32 AM Where did you guys put shadowing? And are you guys clumping shadowing as one activity like on the AMCAS app?
Chocolate Bear 07-29-2008, 01:53 PM Where did you guys put shadowing? And are you guys clumping shadowing as one activity like on the AMCAS app?
I have 5 docs whom I shadowed. I think I'll put each different doc as a separate occurrence, listed chronologically among my other items in the "Extracurricular and Volunteer Work" section.

How about trying five dashes for an indent (-----)?

There were other secondaries that had this problem. I think VCU did. I would just try spacing it in your Word file as you copy and paste and it might show up to them as formatted.

even with multiple spaces/"enter" hits, both of my essays turned out as one big paragraph. oh well, it's done YAY!
if we're applying this early, how long is the expected wait before we hear anything more...one month??

Hey.
Last year, I ended up sending my secondary application around the same time (may be a week earlier, i think) as you. However, it took some more time because my DO wasn't able to get my LOR in sooner. Anyway, I got an interview invite from CCOM in the first week of September. What I have heard is that they have updated their networks and if you have gotten everything in by now, you might here something by the third week of August. Good luck.

Ah, I hope to finish by this weekend. I'm out of town all next week but I am moving and need to prep for 2 lectures to teach tomorrow. I really need to finish another school before I finish CCOM. AHH. That would be awesome, to have an interview at CCOM by the end of August!

ShyRem 08-02-2008, 01:09 PM I merged the original discussion thread with the created one. Sorry it wasn't done earlier - lots of us are getting ready for rotations, are on rotations, or are moving.

I use Firefox too so it shouldn't be the browser. I don't remember it being overly difficult - maybe log off and see if it works when you log back on? If there's still a problem, you can call the office early this morning.

If you were able to select the file and hit "choose" or whatever it says in the box, and the box went away, you have uploaded. Try saving, then coming back. Instead of "CV Unavailable" on the right hand side of the CV section, it should have a blue link that says "CV Document" (if it worked).

Just listed. Actually, mine are more like [Entry * Entry * Entry], since I was running out of room. It still looks good, but only takes up 2 lines instead of 11. The *'s are actually small diamond bullets.

Minea1010 08-09-2008, 12:31 PM I just started on the resume/CV now and was wondering if and how much you included as description for each activity. If I end up describing all of them even for two lines it will def. be more than 2 or 4 pages.
And do they really want us to write down relevant course work taken in undergrad? Seems like a really redundant task? Ha?
Thanks :)

I had 24 entries total, between jobs, extracurriculars, and volunteer stuff. They averaged 1-2 lines of description (plus 1 line for the title of each entry). I also had 5 lines for school and 11 miscellaneous lines. Total is 2 full pages.
I didn't see anything about relevant coursework. Where did that come from?
Minea1010 08-09-2008, 05:33 PM Thanks!!!! :)

DrDiva06 08-12-2008, 05:14 PM Hey everyone!
Im SUPER interested in CCOM, LOVE Chicago (Went to Northwestern for Undergrad..).. Here's my quick/random question..
Do D.O. Schools (particularly CCOM) take the highest MCAT score from ONE exam or the highest scores from subsets of multiple exams?
Im asking because they take the highest grade from retakes in science classes, so (in my case).. Im hoping they do the same for the MCAT!
If anyone has info, let me know! Good luck to everyone!

Chocolate Bear 08-12-2008, 09:11 PM Do D.O. Schools (particularly CCOM) take the highest MCAT score from ONE exam or the highest scores from subsets of multiple exams?
They all have different methods (most recent vs. avg. vs. best subsections), but the cherry picking method you're hoping for is probably the least common. You should explore the website, but there's a good chance you won't find it there. Email them if that's the case.
msu16 08-15-2008, 09:38 AM Will CCOM accept LOR from interfolio?

Not electronically, but they'll snail mail it. If you need to provide an address, give them this one:

Chicago Person 08-16-2008, 12:20 AM All right people, this is it! My application is listed as complete at CCOM and I'm praying for that interview invite to come my way. I'm rooting for you all, but will not hesitate to slander you if it means I can take your spot.
I'm kidding.
On another note, has anyone received the generic e-mails from CCOM? I got one when I first got my secondary, subject title was "Greetings from the Director of Admissions." Got another one just after submitting my secondary that had the subject title "Why consider CCOM?".
I gotta give 'em credit, no other school has been e-mailing as if to imply that I'm being "recruited". The truth is I'd give my left eyebrow for an acceptance, but I'm hoping they don't know that. Keep the e-mails coming!

Yea got the same emails, they also sent something snail mail, I have a feeling that they send it to everyone but you never know.
davenp73 08-16-2008, 08:39 AM I am in the same boat...waiting! I have been complete since 8/1, but I think in my case they are waiting for my second MCAT scores from the 7/18 test.
This has been the most anxious time for me! Since everything is in and all we can do is wait to see if we get an interview or not.
I think when I get my first rejection I will lose it!
Anyone else feeling the same way?? Gotten any interviews yet?
Any tips on how to relax and enjoy my last week of summer before school starts again?
THANKS!!
thriftnuh 08-16-2008, 10:48 AM Complete at CCOM since 8/6 - and I think the timeline is about one month?
Last week I started school, received one interview invite and one post-secondary reject. Crazy emotional roller coaster!
davenp - enjoy your last week of summer!! you already have all your secondaries worked out? That's hurting a lot of my fellow classmates at the moment.

I got to visit last week as well and they have a nice campus and my ex-roommate who just started really likes it there. The people are all friendly and talkative. I liked it.

i've been complete at ccom since 8/15. I got home today and there was a letter from Midwestern University in my mail box...I almost cried because I assumed it was a rejection letter from CCOM...but it was just AZCOM telling me I was complete. phew! good luck you guys, CCOM and AZCOM both are near the top of my list.

I was worried with that same letter.
Chicago Person 08-18-2008, 10:30 PM I was worried with that same letter.
Before opening my letter, I held it against a bright light and looked to see if I could spot the words "unfortunately", "regret", "sorry", or "you're screwed" through the envelope. Seeing none of these I opened it to find a letter saying that I should fill out the secondary on line.
MossPoh 08-19-2008, 11:30 AM My biggest hope with CCOM is the fact that my letter writer told me "when" I get the interview, he will make some special phone calls for me. It'll suck if I have to tell him I didn't get an interview!

as a follow up, I've just received a secondary from AZCOM and it uses the same website/login as CCOM. But now on my AZCOM "checklist" it already has my MCAT scores, and is "expecting" my supplemental apps and LORs.
so either they are expecting MCAT scores from a future date...or you may have to follow up with them....hope this helps!
runningdoc 08-20-2008, 05:29 AM Hey everyone!
Does anyone know when CCOM begins interviewing? I looked at previous threads (2007) and it looks like they may have started the 3rd week in september?
davenp73 08-20-2008, 08:17 AM I'm not sure when they begin interviewing, but I was told on the phone yesterday that they review files as soon as they have all of your info (like, I was complete there on 8/1, and although they were expecting new MCAT scores, they reviewed my application already)....Weird huh? I thought they would wait for my new scores to come in.

DrMattOglesby 08-25-2008, 09:25 PM so how many LORs can we send if we are not using a premed committee? Has anybody called the school and asked already?
I have 4 LORs (2 science, 1 nonscience, 1 professional) in addition to my physician LOR.
rhlsg 08-25-2008, 10:00 PM I called CCOM and they said 6ish. The person wanted to stress quality over quantity. In the end, I think I sent them 7. Didn't hurt cause I got an invite to interview (9/22) :)

There are hotels within a mile away. Midwestern is off of Highland which seems like a busy street. I wish I could give you specifics but I was only in the area for a week.

CCOMER 08-30-2008, 03:53 PM nope, but I do know that in 2012 the class size increased to about 173-176 students (173 or 176 figures were named during our presentations) from 161 or something like that.

The same as any two other unrelated schools. I'd say if one thinks you're good enough, the other very well could, as well.
engineeredout 09-02-2008, 05:17 AM UGH I've been banging my head against the wall for two days trying to come up with something for the second secondary application essay. Its so infuriating. As annoying as they are I can understand the "Why do you want to attend XX-COM" questions, but "Why should you be accepted into this year's class?" Plus having to make a CV, do they even read the primary application?
I've been staring at this stupid 1500 character essay and am completely stuck. For two days I haven't been able to write a word. I know we're supposed to write about what makes us stand out but I'm not really sure. Everything I start to come up with, like intellight caring blah blah blah is going to be the same load of **** as every other premed.
I guess i'm just looking for a little inspiration, as this essay is the only thing keeping me from submitting my secondary.

I know what you mean, the same answer can work for both of those questions. But maybe you should just focus on different things for each question. For the one that asks why you want to attend CCOM, focus on the things you know about the school. Say something about Chicago and how its a great city, talk about osteopathic medicine and why its right for you, read up on CCOM's history and see if you find anything in there that interests you.
For the question that asks why they should accept you, you can focus more on your own qualities, and why you think you would make a good physician.
I'm sure you'll get over the hump. Good luck!

Yeah I already did the why CCOM question. I talked about location yeah but also about the schedule they have and the list of awesome elective classes they offer. Studying their website makes me wanna go there even more.
Still though for focusing on my own qualities, like I said I have trouble coming up with stuff that I don't feel like everyone else will say. I read the question and see "What makes you different from all the other nerdy ass annoying premeds sending us 75$ for the privilage of writing essays?", and I have trouble coming up with a unique response.
How does it sound if I start off an essay saying something pretty much like that? For example
I have been thinking long and hard about differentiating myself from other applicants. I am sure that all of the applicants who have made it this far are intelligent and hard working...
Gah now I ended up writing a pretty good little essay, but its 2000 characters :bang:. I don't know how I'm going to trim 500 characters out of it.
skiracr456 09-02-2008, 09:06 PM I am from Michigan but I lived in Chicago all summer. CCOM is one of my top school choices and I really want to get invited for an interview there. I just submitted my secondary application and I am complete as of August 25th. It practically killing me to wait to see if I got an interview or not! I am obsessively checking my email, haha. I interviewed at AZCOM last year and was waitlisted. I think their interviews are pretty similar. There is a doctor, a student, and someone on the admissions staff in the room with you and I think they go for like 45 min or something they give you a tour of the school and lunch. It was a really nice day they put together except my interview wasn't until after lunch so I had all day to be nervous about it, lol. They were all very nice there though, nobody was out to stress you out, they did ask some interesting questions though.

I feel you! I was complete on 8/1 also, and when I spoke to an adcom in mid-august, like the 19th, she told me my application had already been reviewed but I have not heard anything. Most likely they are waiting b/c my mCAT is so low.....I wonder when they will let us know our status!

Haha I had the same thoughts. I'd wait two weeks before being concerned, as mine took nearly that long, and I was complete a while back. You can call, but they'll tell you to wait a few more days. I would know. ;)

Reading the catalog (http://www.midwestern.edu/ccom/) (top left) should help find some unique characteristics. Some schools' don't help much, but I like CCOM's electives and course descriptions.

Most of us have been researching and obsessing over CCOM. I feel that every time I come up with a question, I either google for the answer or find it on this website. So ... with regards to having questions for the interview panel, has anyone thought of something? I have a specific question about my hoped-for profession but other than that I have nothing ... any help would be great.

chicago4life 09-16-2008, 09:52 AM Hi, this is my first time posting on this site. I had my interview yesterday 9/15 at CCOM. The interviewers were great! Extremely nice and made you feel comfortable. I really want to go to this school so I hope I did well. They said they'd notify us at the latest in early oct. Good luck to all of you waiting for an interview. It's still very early in the admissions process so don't panic if you haven't heard anything yet.

Welcome, congrats, and good luck! Now go post some feedback on the day, here (http://more.studentdoctor.net/schoollist.php?type=1), if you don't mind. :D
Habeed 09-16-2008, 10:17 AM My stats according to AACOMAS (AMCAS sees them differently, is why I have to postbacc):
GPA : ~3.8 for everything
MCAT : 36Q
Ok, currently I am in a post-bacc to an M.D. school, and applying to my state schools as well. My post-bacc program historically has taken absolutely every student scoring grades about a certain level in this program, so my chances are at least 90% I will get into the M.D. school. I have nothing against D.O.s, but the fact is, the majority of the non-primary care residency spots are allopathic, and the odds are substantially better to match as an M.D.
HOWEVER, 90% is not 100%, and so I want to hedge my bets. The M.D. school I am at may not accept me until April or May. Also, I could apply for that National Guard - ASW program a few months earlier, which could affect things.
The three D.O. schools I applied to using a fee waiver : CCOM, DMU-COM, MSU-COM.
Each of them demands a non-refundable deposit of around $1000, and I would prefer not to pay this.
Is there any way I can time it so that I probably won't have to waste $1000? The problem is, the longer I wait to turn in a secondary, the smaller the improvement in my chances becomes.
Let's suppose that I have a 97% chance of getting into one of those 3 osteopathic schools, were I to turn my secondaries in by October 1. That improves my chances of getting into a medical school to nearly 100% for this year.
(99.7% if my math is correct)
But if I waited until Febuary, I might have only a 50% chance of getting in to one of those 3 osteopathic schools. That means the marginal benefit from applying at all is much less.
Uggh. I don't know what to do. It defeats the whole purpose to apply, go to interviews, and then not pay the deposit for at least 1 school. But, $1000 is enough money to matter. I could buy groceries and gas for a couple of months, or buy a new laptop, or do lots of things with an extra grand.

I interviewed with you. Who were you? Or you can tell me what group you were in if you don't mind me asking.
hypnix 09-16-2008, 10:51 AM And like Chicago4life said, everyone was extremely nice and helpful. One student even overheard me asking a question and came over to help me. My interviewers were nice and they didn't make me feel uncomfortable. The lunch was really good too! :D

I don't see what your dilema is.....you said in this post that you have a 90% chance at MD school, MD's get better matches, and you don't want to spend money on a deposit to hold your seat at a "safety net" DO school you would not want to attend  why not just stick to the MD route? I don't think this thread is the place to post about using osteopathic schools as a fall back plan and then mentioning that they don't match as well, even if it may be true. Sorry just my two cents, but good luck with your applications :luck:
meganmarie 09-16-2008, 11:10 AM on a more positive note ....anyone interviewing on 9/26??
chilon09 09-16-2008, 11:42 AM I just got verified by ACOMAS last friday and I got my CCOM secondary today. I hope I am not too late in the cycle!!!!

avervisal 09-16-2008, 12:33 PM Thank you guys for posting your interview feedback! I like how it seems like the interviewers are really trying to find out who you are as a person. After reading some of the questions you guys got, I'm really excited to go into this one! Hopefully I'll get an invite soon. :) Speaking of which, how long after you were complete did it take to get one?

I think somewhere in the neighborhood of 2 weeks?
Chicago Person 09-16-2008, 04:19 PM Hypnix & Chicago4life - did they tell you guys when the admissions committee would be meeting next? Someone in our group asked and the question was side-stepped.
Just wondering how long we have to wait for a decision.

They said admissions convenes once a month so that we should expect some news no later than early oct. since they will most likely meet in a couple weeks.

Haha YES! I hope we both get in, it'd be nice knowing someone before even beginning school.

whoknows2008 09-17-2008, 07:09 PM Does anyone know the turn around time for an acceptance response at CCOM?
ronicajay 09-18-2008, 07:04 AM What are you guys doing for transportation?
skiracr456 09-18-2008, 05:32 PM I know this is a rather dismal question but I was wondering how long it has been taking people to hear whether or not they have been rejected before an interview? I am trying to keep my head up and not think negatively but it has been a long time since I have been complete and still heard nothing :( and I am thinking that it's a bad sign. What should I do? Call the school? I had really high hopes for possibly going to CCOM I have visited it and it really seems to be a great school, and I love the Chicago area.

rmsgolfer 09-22-2008, 07:21 PM did anyone else who filled out the secondary feel like the essays took 10 minutes. 1500 characters is not a lot of things. I believe mine were 2 medium sized paragraphs for each essay

Deepa100 09-23-2008, 12:33 PM I just received the secondary for this school. Are there any tech companies in or near DownersGrove? I will have to look it for my hubby.

Downers Grove is a really nice area and not far from there is Oakbrook which is largely commercial from what I have seen. I am sure that there are plenty of large companies there for your hubby to look. My boyfriend works for a company there doing computer science like stuff. I am not sure what he/she would be looking for but I am sure you can find something there for them.
Good luck in the application process! I am still hoping for an interview there... :(

Thanks, my husband is more of a computer engineer. The difference is he also does hardware stuff. I just looked up monster and looks like there are some decent sized companies there. I am nervous about living in such a large city though. We shall see.
Good luck to you too with your application:luck:
Joey7 09-23-2008, 01:38 PM I interviewed at CCOM yesterday, 9/22...
They told us that the admissions committee meets this week and that decisions will be sent out early next week by snail mail...
they told us if we had not heard from them by Oct 3 (next friday) to call them to check on our status
SJonathan 09-23-2008, 09:55 PM I hate the waiting! I was complete on September 3. Please someone tell me they waited this long and still got an interview!! Each day that goes by I take as another bad sign....

Well the good thing is unless you are from a really really small town Downers Grove is more of a suburb of the city of Chicago. It has some really great housing and dinner places so it may not be that big of a change. But if you are from a small town then there are a lot of great changes there too (there is a metra stop in DG that can take you right into the city and I believe it goes further out of the city as well). Except traffic haha I hear that is real bad during the morning and evening rush hour. Sorry I am just blabbing but I really like the area and the school so its easy to say good things about it. If you get an interview and see the place you will know what I mean! :)
