Thanks a ton!!
lainey234 08-20-2008, 06:28 AM hey guys, I was just wondering what airport to fly into to get to kirksville? I see they have a little airport, but I don't love the idea of coming in on a little puddle jumper. What's the closest major airport and how long does it take to drive to kirksville from there?

I heard that you have to fly into KC (I think) and then take the puddle jumper to Kirksville. Sounds like fun...
gorillaRN 08-20-2008, 10:46 AM I live in Columbia, MO. It is about 90 miles south of Kirksville and I have alot of family up there. If you go to MCI (Kansas City International) it is about 3 hrs from Kirksville (You do get to drive through Walt Disney's hometown though, haha). I would fly into St. Louis (STL). It is about 2 1/2 hours from Kirksville. St. Louis also has about 3-4 flights a day to Kirksville Regional (About 4 miles south of A.T. Still.) Truth is it's either Kirksvilles airport or about 3 hours of driving.
lainey234 08-20-2008, 11:34 AM Great! Thanks for the help :)
emkrueger 08-20-2008, 11:42 PM just got an invite to interview! i'm so excited, this is my first one! anyone else heard back?
umean2tellme 08-21-2008, 12:01 AM Emailed school and apparently I'm in the pile of applications next in line to be screened for potential interview. Wonder how long it takes for them to actually render a decision.
Their computer system is a little buggy. first it took my money and not the application, then it took both but didn't have me complete for a while, and it never sent me a confirmation number.
quick question: If you were a relative of A.T. Still would it be really easy to become a D.O., especially at a school named after him? I'm not, but I'm just curious.
MossPoh 08-21-2008, 11:08 AM I clicked submit and everything about a month and a half ago. Evidently the first submission was a dry run and I had to resubmit yesterday. Little frustrated. Need to dig up credit card bills to make sure I wasn't double charged.
rugger14 08-23-2008, 08:52 AM does KCOM email invite you for a secondary? I was complete 8/13..it's only been 10 days but I was wondering if there was a general time frame in which they send u an email after u submit?
rugger14 08-24-2008, 05:53 AM nevermind, got it today haha
umean2tellme 08-27-2008, 04:05 PM Yay just got invite for interview today. Now gotta figure out where to stay.
Dr. Toaster 09-02-2008, 07:12 AM Yay just got invite for interview today. Now gotta figure out where to stay.
They let you stay with a student if you want to do so.
umean2tellme 09-02-2008, 09:05 AM They let you stay with a student if you want to do so.
I chose that option but no one has contacted me yet. I'm mainly worried about how to get there. Flying into KC and gonna drive bcanut renting a car while under the age of 25 can get expensive.

I called about it, because I wondered too. Apparently, they are training a boat load of "ambassadors" in September. When all that training is done, those students will then be put in contact with the interviewees, and arrangements for staying over can be made then. The admissions people said you are guaranteed a room, though, because there are so many people being trained.
When is your interview scheduled for? I'm 10/6.

Yeah, I chose to stay with a student. I'm glad they offer it cause gas is going to be expensive and hotel costs hurt.

We have the same interview day. Where you coming from? I'm coming from miami and cant find a non-stop flight so I'm gonna chill in kansas city after the interview and go home the next day at some point.
premed8844 09-03-2008, 07:03 PM Do they require the evaluator forms from recommenders?
thanks

Evidently not. I didn't use that and got an interview.
I'm really excited for the interview. This is one of those schools I really wanted a chance at. My birthday was yesterday and I was kind of pissy by the end because it was so crappy and then at 11:59 p.m. I got an email saying I got an interview invite. Made my bday awesome for that one minute.

You'll love KCOM, it's a top notch school. Small community, but great school. Good luck on the invterviews.
MossPoh 09-06-2008, 08:25 AM Thanks. I grew up in a town that was roughly the same size with about the same distances to real cities. I suspect I'll be very comfortable in the environment and don't know if I can wait the month for the interview!
bigyihoroi 09-11-2008, 05:51 PM Booking the flight ticket is driving me nuts. There seems to be no direct flights from CA to Kirksville. Damn...so much trouble that made me wanna withdraw...

I think you have to fly into KC, then get a puddle jumper to Kirksville. Right?
lainey234 09-11-2008, 06:30 PM Actually you have to fly into St Louis and the puddle jumper costs like $150 for the round trip :(
Chocolate Bear 09-11-2008, 06:37 PM Actually you have to fly into St Louis and the puddle jumper costs like $150 for the round trip :(
Oh, okay. Thanks for the correction. I figured it was KC, since it's closer to Kirksville.
umean2tellme 09-12-2008, 08:57 AM those small planes scare the krap outta me
MossPoh 09-12-2008, 09:36 AM It was suggested to me to just fly in to the larger airport and then drive. Evidently flights are kind of sketchy going into kirksville, and they like to cancel them a lot. That extra 120 dollar flight could be used for a rental car...and it'd probably end up being the same amount. Sure the drive sucks, but it lets you have a little more freedom in the area to explore the vast nothingness of the midwest.
rddoms 09-12-2008, 11:28 AM When I interviewed for the MS program, I flew in to Kirksville from St. Louis. I haven't flown back into Kirksville again, because it is pretty pricey. I usually fly into KC, and drive. KC has a better drive IMO and it usually takes me 2.5 to 3 hours. Just make sure you know where you are going. If you have a Garmin or the like, USE IT. The roads are a little tricky just outside of KC.
Hi,
I would fly into KC and drive. That would probably be cheaper than flying to Kirksville. Check ticket prices to both STL and KC though. Depending on where you are coming from, there can be a huge difference in prices flying into one airport or the other. Also, we are in the process of getting student hosts set up for you guys, so don't worry. You will have a place to stay if you choose that option. See you soon and good luck!
MossPoh 09-13-2008, 02:55 AM I just got the email. If I could get a super hot, unattached girl that'd be super. Ideally one that wears exclusively lingerie around the place. I can also settle for any other med student...I guess.
223319 09-13-2008, 10:40 AM Hey
I just got my mcat score back and I got a dreadful 22. I am totally devasated about my score because I was scoring 27 and 28 on my practice tests. Anyway,I have a pretty good GPA of a 3.68 and great ECs. Does anyone think that I still have a chance at KCOM or any DO schools? Anyone with similar stats?
Karen12345 09-13-2008, 08:17 PM I heard that you have to fly into KC (I think) and then take the puddle jumper to Kirksville. Sounds like fun...
Can someone direct me to information about puddle jumpers to Kirksville? I want to get on one, but can't find it. Kirksville does not seem to be recognized as a place with an airport by any of the sites I visited. Thanks.

St. Louis is the only place that sends them I believe. I was told by someone in the admissions office to avoid flying into Kirksville if you can.

I'd probably heed the warning of a KCOM admissions person, but here (http://www.kirksvillecity.com/Kirksvilleregionalairport/flightinfo.htm) is the info you are looking for. You can't seem to get from STL to IRK (Kirksville's airport) via Expedia or Orbitz. I guess you have to use what's listed on the IRK site.
Karen12345 09-14-2008, 07:00 AM Thanks guys!
It really is a hassle getting to Kirksville. Your normal predicted travel cost can easily double if you're under 25 or if you are not local to Kirksville. Not good.
MossPoh 09-14-2008, 07:23 AM Thanks guys!

Well, if you have certain insurance programs look into it. They can waive the fee. Sometimes you can find online codes to reduce price as well. It is usually a 25 dollar a day fee, so 50 bucks plus around a 20 dollar daily rental fee. Then gas factored in. You're probably looking around the same price as a flight, but it won't get cancelled on you.
Casey 09-14-2008, 11:04 AM Does anyone know where you can find out what your ACT scores were? I took the ACT almost 10 years ago and can't remember what I got. This is the first secondary I have received that asks for my ACT scores.
Thanks!
MossPoh 09-14-2008, 11:55 AM I just kind of approximated it. They don't really care that much.

You are probably right. Thank you.
Also, I noticed that unlike other car rental companies, "Dollar" seems to charge extra if you are under 24, not 25.
Cp22kjer 09-14-2008, 01:40 PM Anyone else out there bringing a guest? If so do they just show up with you? I think it's great that KCOM includes parents/spouses, etc.
I hope I'm not the only person doing this though!
MossPoh 09-14-2008, 04:11 PM I'm sure my dad would love to come. I don't have a significant other or spouse, so that isn't an issue. If I did, she'd def. come. In a scenario like that, it is important for the person that may move there with you to be comfortable too. In my case, I don't want anyone altering my opinion about a place whether on purpose or mistake.
1973benw 09-14-2008, 07:03 PM did any of you send your letter via interfolio to kirksville?
MossPoh 09-14-2008, 10:45 PM I did. I am yet to approach a school that hasn't accepted interfolio.

I interviewed at KCOM last year and two people brought a friend/significant other with them. It wasn't weird and it probablly helped them relax for their interviews (granted they don't go with you in your interview), but I'm sure it had a calming affect. You will notice that KCOM is very family orientated. So if you have family, they will fit in here just fine.
Good luck

That's great to hear. Thanks for the info. My parents have been super supportive in this entire application process. I would love to include my dad whom offered to drive up with me.
I didn't want it to seem like I wasn't independent or anything!! On the same token I like the idea of him getting to see it all first hand......

I'm a 1st year here and I really like it at KCOM, I'm a small town boy so being in K'vlle is not that big of a deal for me. So if you guys have questions of any kind feel free to pm and I'll get back to you. You'll really like it here. Goodluck on the interview.
KCOM is my first choice school. I'm really hoping to get an interview invite there soon. I applied last year with an 18 on my MCAT, and didn't get an interview. But this year I was able to raise my score to a 25, my gpa is up to 3.64, and i've got 7 more months of hospital experience under my belt for a total of 2 years.
Does my application look strong enough for admission? If so, how long after being complete did it take any of you to get an interview invite?
rddoms 09-20-2008, 08:52 PM Good stats. Strong from that angle.
It all depends on when you were complete with the secondary. Every couple of weeks, the pre-screening committe meets and they decide who gets interviews. If they have a huge stack, they might take longer than one would expect.
I had my secondary to the school two days after I recieved the secondary invite, and it took awhile to get the interview invite.
Good luck!
I submitted my secondary the day I got it (last Thursday), but unfortunately won't be complete until probably Tuesday or Wednesday do to a delay in getting one of my letters loaded on interfolio. I'm just glad they aren't pushing the DO letter as hard. I have a very generic one, but a very strong letter from my boss at the hospital.
I don't want to pry, but how did your interview go?
Evidently not. I didn't use that and got an interview.

I honestly have no clue because the computer system messed up with me and I had to resubmit about a month after my first submission. I really never kept track of that stuff. I have too many schools on my list to keep track of timespans between submission and interviews.
ckurtis 09-28-2008, 09:22 PM Has anyone interviewed here yet? If so, how was it?
307Doc 09-30-2008, 10:32 AM Has anyone interviewed here yet? If so, how was it?
Interviews start this week. I think we get the first round of students either tomorrow or Thursday. But definately this Friday. Good luck all.
rugger14 10-01-2008, 08:16 AM i'm trying to set up an interview/find flights. Does anyone know what to search for with the online flights? Kirksville seems to small to show up. Another post mentioned there are flights from STL to Kirksville? How do I find those? Thanks for any tips!

I was advised by the office at KCOM to avoid the flights from St. Louis to Kirksville if you can. They get cancelled all the time and don't fly out much. The code for kirksville is IRK and there are 12 flights per WEEK flying there. http://flightaware.com/live/airport/KIRK That may help.
umean2tellme 10-01-2008, 11:13 AM How long after the interview will you know if you're accepted? I just booked my flight for 235.00 which isn't half bad, but I have to go from Ft. Lauderdale to Charlotte, NC, then from there to St louis. Direct flights from Florida to MO are ridiculous.
mastamark 10-01-2008, 01:17 PM Good Luck to you guys coming up for interviews in the coming days. You're gonna love it here. :)

Last year we knew in about a week if we were accepted. I did at least.:o
I'm getting really excited about hearing back from KCOM for an interview. I've only been complete for a little over a week because of some MCAT issues, but I'm already anxious as can be. Anyone else feeling like this?

I'm excited. I submitted 9/29 and just got my interview invite today. You should be hearing pretty soon I would guess. Good luck. I'm a little nervous about the two one-hour interviews. Should be fun.
umean2tellme 10-06-2008, 10:50 PM The interview was great. The school is a lot bigger than I expected and Kirksville has a Walmart so I'll be happy there if I get in. Very weird gender distribution of interviewees today: 1 woman and 8 guys (I believe 3 people rescheduled but I think at least one of them was male). I never saw wild deer running free before so it was definitely a nice experience.
MossPoh 10-07-2008, 02:47 AM Until they run free into your car. ;)
It was great though. I've had a few weird nearly all male interviews so far. Its odd because most schools are 50/50 or even slanted towards female, so they must have some all female interviews with 1 male to make up for it at some point. Very nice school though...it may be my number 1. I get a great vibe from KCOM.
Relativity 10-07-2008, 03:28 PM And this school rocks! Education received here will compete with the best. I am from a big city in texas and though, kirksville is much smaller, the people and the facilities more than make up for this. And I am not white, so you know the people must be sincerely nice.
MossPoh 10-07-2008, 04:51 PM I'm not going to act like it has the best facilities I've seen, or even the most friendly admissions staff (although they are probably tied for first). The place gives a great vibe. It is one of the few places that truly had me looking at the school first and the location second. Everyone was very genuine there. They are probably the most family friendly school I have encountered. The local university is very nice and filled with equally good people (I studied at the science building there one day).
I just got news of an interview at my number one overall choice out of all the schools I applied to (allopathic and osteopathic), but barring acceptance at that school KCOM is a close second. I hated the driving from and to kansas city, but I don't think i could've had a cooler student host or a better experience at the school. I do think they need some different colors on the walls though..that paint is just odd with the lighting.
umean2tellme 10-07-2008, 05:06 PM I liked it. It would have been nice to let us see part of a class or even better let us see one of those house visits or standardized patients in action. Well, I did leave early so if they showed any of that in the tour i guess i missed out. I did like the guy who was giving the tour to those other people and talking about the history of A.T. Still and stuff, they should let him give a tour to applicants he seems like he knows the history like the back of his hand.
MossPoh 10-07-2008, 05:53 PM He was almost a little too excited for me. That guy must have polished off the kool-aid.
After the financial aid session we got to do a lot of stuff. (I forgot you left before that). We did get to see the dummies in action to some extent. We also checked out the anatomy lab for a bit and talked with the students more, in addition to seeing all the study rooms.
rugger14 10-07-2008, 06:22 PM MossPoh, I will be driving from Kansas City as well. I was wondering how crazy the drive is..i.e. multiple lane highways..i'm not used to driving around big cities:eek: thanks!
MossPoh 10-07-2008, 06:49 PM MossPoh, I will be driving from Kansas City as well. I was wondering how crazy the drive is..i.e. multiple lane highways..i'm not used to driving around big cities:eek: thanks!
The airport is way off from the city. I never even saw the real Kansas city. I think there might have been about a 10 mile stretch out of the 3 hour drive that involved 3 lanes. Depending on what your gps tells you to do you could spend up to 2 hours+ on a little 2 lane highway zigzagging through fields and forests. The suggested way that is a bit longer but easier and feels less like a death trap involves larger highways and interstates most of the time. Trust me, city driving is going to be the least of your worries. Im from a small town too but also have lots of experience driving in major cities, so my viewpoint might be skewed. The entire metro area of kansas city is under 2 million though...and that is a very very large area, so I wouldn't worry about anything.
It was an 8 or 9 mile drive to get to the bbq place where I ran into a KCUMB student actually.
Pegasus1731 10-07-2008, 06:52 PM I'm from a medium sized city, and Kirksville is definatly something to get used to, but you adjust very quickly. Everything you need is here, and it's A LOT easier to study without a ton of distraction. Believe me, don't let the small town scare you. It freaked me out at first, but it's truely a gem of a town.
The school is top-notch. I really don't think you can do much better.
Good luck with interviews! :hardy:
Back to studying ;)
I just recieved my interview invite for KCOM. This is my first invite, and my #1 school. I'm so stoked.
azmo07 10-08-2008, 01:37 AM My interview at KCOM is on 23th and I am very excited!!!
Im driving from SL to Kirkeville. Hows the drive? I heard it takes about 3 hours?
Well I am very excited and KCOM one of my top choices!
MossPoh 10-08-2008, 02:43 AM I did it in about 2.5 hours, but just say 3 for legality purposes.
st2205 10-08-2008, 06:05 PM I interviewed with you guys on the 6th. I heard we were supposed to hear by Thursday, but I wasn't sure which Thursday. My wife said it was this Thursday.
MossPoh 10-08-2008, 07:51 PM Yea. This Thursday. She said they had a ton to review though, so don't get worried if they don't have a decision yet.

MossPoh 10-09-2008, 07:43 AM Just the admissions number on the website. The direct one.
Yea...it kind of stings a bit. It would be worse if it were my first interview. I got the impression I mis-stepped with both of my interviews in certain areas. I don't think I acted as hardcore osteopathic as they liked.
umean2tellme 10-09-2008, 07:55 AM They just called me and I GOT ACCEPTED. I almost fell down the stairs to go get my phone to call people. This is a good feeling.

rddoms 10-09-2008, 08:17 AM They just called me and I GOT ACCEPTED. I almost fell down the stairs to go get my phone to call people. This is a good feeling.
Congrats! If you end up coming here, you are gonna love it! We have already done so much as far as standardized patients and school physicals, it is awesome.
I have one recommendation for all who choose to come to KCOM. I bought a 2 bedroom house, and my monthly payment is only $300. It was kind of scary at first, but I would recommend everyone to look into it. It will save you money in the long run (at least $100 a month), and it is nice having separation from your neighbors.
hypnix 10-09-2008, 08:38 AM I just called. I got rejected. Kind of stings since it is my first outright rejection, but whatever. I have two acceptances...I'll deal.
Same here, but I have an acceptance already as well. KCOM was choice #2. I was asked if I would go here if I got accepted next week (meaning today) and I told them I was not sure. I think he might have been turned off by that =/ Oh well! Good luck to everyone else!
umean2tellme 10-09-2008, 10:30 AM I just looked at real estate prices and it's ridiculous in Kirksville. The houses have so much land and are really cheap. I live in Miami so obviously real estate is not the greatest down here right now.
How is car insurance for younger drivers down there (I'll be 23 when I start)? Is Mizzou far away? I hear it's like an hour away but I didn't see it on my drive to St. Louis. My girlfriend has a bachelor's in psychology and wants a graduate degree in it so I'm trying to find something for her so that she can come with me. I heard ATSU/KCOM spouses get discounts on master's degrees, but at what school?

Thats because Mizzou is an hour and a half in a different direction. ;)
MossPoh 10-09-2008, 11:56 AM If you don't mind me asking, what are your stats like?
I have a 3.3 cum and a 3.0 with a very strong upward trend. My gpa freshman year was a 1.9 or something. My mcat was a 27 which I was let down about since I was testing in the 37 range, but my grandma died a few days before and I was still emotionally wrecked from all the time in the hospital. Aside from that, I had two study abroad programs, President of a club at a major university, leader of "quality team", multiple project leads with 3+ million dollar projects, IM sports, 200+ shadowing hours, big brother/big sister mentor, etc. My degrees are non science. I'm well rounded, which is about the only thing I can think of that lead to me getting the amount of interviews I've gotten.
Relativity 10-09-2008, 01:07 PM Its like for those three hours of interview they looked at my soul and said we like you! I am so happy! Thank God!
I am sorry mosspoh. I hope you get to go where you want. Good luck dude!
MossPoh 10-09-2008, 03:55 PM Its ok. 3 out of 5 interviews isn't so bad so far.I have 2 more to go on the books. I think I'll survive!
Now that I think about it, I probably shouldn't have let it slip that my stress was left since I got my first acceptance. It was probably a turnoff. ;)
st2205 10-09-2008, 09:40 PM So I got a call from someone in admissions but could not take it because I was at work. I called them on my lunch and they weren't there, so I just called the admissions office. The woman said "the admissions committee has decided not to accept you this year." I was bummed, said ok, then was about to hit end call on my phone when I heard her say "wait a minute!" Apparently she was reading the wrong list and I had been accepted. Still want to call the original person, however, just to double check. My wife is pretty sold on the place and I think I've found myself less and less excited about my other interviews, so I think we'll probably end up there come next August!

Congrats on your acceptance. I believe we interviewed on the 6th together. I know two people brought wives, were you the couple that also brought the child?

Yeah, we had the kid. I wonder what happened with the other guy, though. It was the only place he applied because they were banking on going there. Kinda wild.

Yeah I remember you. I was the black guy lol. Your wife is cool and your baby is cute. If i had a cute kid like that I'd definitely be showing him off and winning the hearts of those interviewers.
Yeah I was in a simliar situation applying and banking on one school last year and it didn't work out. Admissions is pretty much a crap shoot so you never know what will happen. You can go in thinking your 4.0 is all you need and end up getting a big rejection in the end.
MossPoh 10-10-2008, 02:03 PM From our perspective, it is a seemingly random and humbling process to apply to these places. What might work great at one school will get you stone cold rejected at another. The angry looking quiet interviewer accepts you while the smiling and cheerful one rejects....its like bizarro world from our angle.
st2205 10-13-2008, 07:30 PM I just figured I'd bump this thread. I have two interviews this week that I considered cancelling. I think my wife and I feel pretty comfortable with the school and think we'll probably be there.
umean2tellme 10-14-2008, 06:04 AM I feel ya. I got one on Halloween I might be cancellin up at Erie. I have this acceptance and have already interviewed at my top two choices so I should just save the money. Now to convince the gf how great kirksville is.
MossPoh 10-14-2008, 07:30 AM Once you have an acceptance, particularly at the school you like, it makes it much more tolerable to cancel interviews. I canceled at PCOM-GA for that reason. These interviews are really brutal. It is difficult to keep up with the rest of your life when your weeks are fragmented. I am keeping my two MD interviews. One is in the same town as me, so that is a no brainer but the other involves me being really curious about the school.
jwales 10-14-2008, 07:09 PM This was probably already answered, but: about how long did it take for admissions to let you know whether you were accepted or not? I have my interview the 16th and am SUPER excited ... it sounds like everyone had a pleasant experience too :)
MossPoh 10-14-2008, 08:26 PM About a week at the max.

Admissions works darn quick here at KCOM. I interviewed on a Friday and was told the following Wednesday. So you should know the Wed or Thurs after your interview. Good Luck.
JagerDO 10-15-2008, 09:20 AM I'm working on my secondary for KCOM and was wondering what you put in the clinical experience section. Did you copy your response from AACOMAS or come up with a new explanation for the activities? Thanks!

Not sure if you checked the Village Budget Inn yet, but it's pretty cheap ($36) and an alright place if you just want a place to sleep. The only bad things is that the rooms smell like cigarette smoke.
AgnesWickfield 10-18-2008, 01:53 PM Hey Everyone,
I'm interviewing at KCOM in Nov. and had a couple of ?s:
1. For anyone who did use the Kirksville airport, is it that bad?
2. How long did the interview go til? I believe the day starts at 8am, but they don't give an estimate of the end time.
3. For those of you who took a significant other/family member/friend, what was it like for them? Did they attend presentations/the tour with you and then mingle with other applicants while you interview? Also, did they dress professionally (suit/tie) as well? Or more business casual?
Thanks for your help! :)

1. N/A.
2. The day went until 2:00, I believe.
3. I took my wife and two month old. They were there for the first hour that they talked a bit about the school. After that they had stuff for them to do. They had a woman come in from the spouses group to talk with them about life in Kirksville, they took a tour, etc. I would inform the admissions office that you are bringing someone so they'll prepare. My wife just wore regular clothing. Another one dressed up. I'm sure it's not a big deal.

I stayed at budget inn. I dont recommend it.
If you are driving from St. Louis. Stay some where around Columbia, mo. its like 90 miles from kirksville and I dont think there will be much traffic.
Use hotwire for deals.
But then again if you rather wake up and be 5 minutes from the school, stay at budget inn. They have a community iron. The hotel shouldnt be fully booked.

1) Didnt use, wouldn't recommend it either because much cheaper to get flight to St. louis, get a rent-a-car and drive to kirksville.
2)Mine was till 3 pm
3) I brought my mom with me, she had an awesome time. Everybody was really nice and she received some extra information in packet-forms that I didnt get. My mom dressed business casual.
Extra information: we stayed at St. Louis for the night after the interview at a Holiday Inn for like $60 from hotwire. it was about 5 miles from the airport. It was awesome, they had a lake, and free shuttle to nice casinos nearby with lots of restaurants. It turned out to be a mini-vacation.
Overall for the money that would have been spent on airport ticket for two from st. louis to kirksville($300). We got a rent-a-car, cruised st.louis, and stayed at an awesome hotel.

I would contact admission directly. I know there are a few of us in student housing with two bedrooms that can house students. I am a first year so I am not totally up to speed as to how it works. However, if you contact admissions and see if there are any people that can house that would probably get you an answer. Also, I stayed at the Super 8 which is on the "other side of town"...still a five minutes drive, and it was simple, but got the job done, so I'd try there.

Hi Johnathan. Bummer about not getting student hosting. Are you interviewing on Friday too? I'll see you there!
JagerDO 10-21-2008, 10:05 AM Tallgal- have you heard anything yet if you have an interview? I submitted my application on 10-19 and letters the week before. It seems as though admissions works really quickly post-interview but how long has it been taking to receive an interview offer?
Is anyone else interviewing on the 13th of November? I'm so nervous that I'm having dreams about the interview already.
umean2tellme 10-21-2008, 01:25 PM Don't stress about the interview. The best thing you can do is just relax and be yourself. The interview is not intimidating at all and the people they match you with will probably have something in common with you, so you'll be even more at ease b/c they might like you before you even start talking. Just know your application and know what you sent to them, be able to talk about yourself, and have at least a vague idea of what you want, both in a school and in your future career. Good luck.
RoyalFB 10-21-2008, 07:54 PM First let me say that I really recommend staying with a student. I did last year and I felt like I met the entire 2nd year class at a birthday party that I tagged along to.
For those of you that want a little privacy or have families coming along, I would highly recommend The Depot Inn & Suites. It is in La Plata, MO which is about 10 minutes south of KCOM. It is by far the nicest place to stay in the area and one of the nicest places I've stayed period. The people that run it are wonderful and are easily talked into a discount. It is a little more expensive than other options in the area, but if you call them on the phone and say that you are interviewing you might get a room for around $70 or so. Trust me- it is well worth the money.
Good luck with interviews and feel free to PM me if you have any questions at all!

No, I called today and they told me that the committee has not reviewed my application yet. I've been complete for two weeks now but they said that it could take four weeks from the time your file is complete to review applications...The waiting is killing me :(

There is no way. Maybe one..slightly. One of my interviewer's interests were "Antiques, Gardening and Cats"
The one that might have had similar interests was too busy grilling me with ethical questions like "name something that made you question your integrity"

LMAO we had the same interviewer. That was a rough interview for me......I feel your pain. I had nothing in common!
umean2tellme 10-23-2008, 11:03 PM Well I had stuff in common with one of my interviewers. We're both nurses, so our hour was spent primarily on that. The other guy really didn't have any interests that I had, except that I think it said he liked computers and I own one.
MossPoh 10-24-2008, 06:22 PM LMAO we had the same interviewer. That was a rough interview for me......I feel your pain. I had nothing in common!
Both of my interviewers were extremely kind but they offered no way to gauge. I am very good at reading responses, and neither of my interviewers gave me anything to work with...to their credit. I felt like my other interviewer shut me down more than her. I did joke with one of the students. I said "How the hell am I supposed to relate with that? 'Weird! You love antiques, gardening and cats...I happen to collect antique garden cats! small world!'"
KCOM was such a great experience regardless of the travel involved, so it did sting to be rejected but I will never hold it against them. I blame my own missteps during the interview process. It wasn't the best facilities or the best town, but they do a GREAT job of making you feel welcome there.
But hey, my interview today gave me boston market for lunch, so I can't complain.

I p0wn amongst computer geeks. If they have a computer made by apple I am golden. I can talk about apple development, designs/trends, and steve jobs for an eternity. Instead I was blitzed with softball questions and then "What made you question your integrity?"...The blind squirrel did not find a nut on that day.

Yes, a two week wait is rough! You can expect a call next Wednesday and if not you'll know for sure by calling them the following day.
Best of luck, hang in there and try to distract yourself.......it helped me ease the excruciating wait. I lost sleep the night before. Keep us posted and goodluck!

PreMed1225 11-01-2008, 12:18 PM I was just accepted last Wednesday (10/29) and I interviewed on 10/24 so it was really quick turn-around. dozitgetchahi 11-01-2008, 12:31 PM I've got an interview @ KCOM on November 15th...any particular suggestions? I know the DO letter was optional, but is it a big strike against you if you don't have one (I used a letter from my supervisor at a teahouse I worked at for the "professional" letter)? My stats are good (3.63/31P, with great rec letters and ECs).

i have an interview the 17th..I have shadowed a few D.O.'s, but none for an extended period. I chose to send in a letter from the nurse manager I work for. I thought that was better since she knows me more personally than anyone I shadowed. A better picture of me could have been presented that way. Good luck!

Its $1000 for the admissions fee followed by 2 more payments later on of $500 each prior to matriculation. I find this in my acceptance packet, so that should be a sufficient source!

This is kind of a pointless question, but does anyone know the % of individuals interviewed vs. the number of individuals that get an acceptance? My interview is in less than two weeks, and I'm just curious. Really hoping KCOM likes me as it is my first choice.
JagerDO 11-03-2008, 08:53 AM Well I was just rejected post-secondary. It took 2 weeks from the date I submitted my secondary and was received via snail mail. I read somewhere they accept 60-65% of those they interview, but I don't know if that includes waitlisted interviewees or not, or if that includes everyone they invited for interview or just those that actually showed up to interview. I'd stilll say the acceptance percentage is well above 50%...

alb565s 11-08-2008, 12:15 PM I live in Kirksville (wife KCOM class 2011 and I just found out that I am KCOM class 2013!) and would be happy to answer any questions. We have had interviewees stay at our apt and it was fun! We went to dinner and she asked my wife lots of questions.
Kirksville is small rural town (population ~17K, cow population 30K ;)) which is great because it's probably 90 minutes away from any distractions! It has 2 grocery stores; Walmart supercenter (super-Walmart!) and Hyvee. A small number of bars and restaurants (I recommend Dukum Inn for bar and Il Spazio for restaurant-- great pizzas!) But it could be culture shock for those interviewees not used to deer hunters and small town living.
Oh-- if you rent a car and they ask if you want insurance from deer, GET IT!! They're not trying to swindle you I promise! It's hunting season soon and the whitetails are moving this time of year. Be careful driving at night!
As for lodging, see if a student can take you in. If not, the hotels book up fast here-- I recommend Holiday Inn Express, Days Inn or Comfort Inn. Check in La Plata or Macon hotels if Kirksville is booked (La Plata is 15 minutes south of Kirksville, Macon is 30 minutes south of Kirksville) and just plan accourdingly! Interview day starts at 8 and goes until 2-3 depending on campus tour.
You are encouraged to bring family too! My parents really liked their presentation and seeing the school. Just tell admissions a few days before interview so they can order lunch for them as well as any dietary requirements.
Oh and I think I got the open interview day that Karen12345 mentioned!! Admissions called me and said they had a cancellation and asked if I could take it. So I was like, "Heck yah!"
*For those others who have already interviewed... Who did you interview with? I wanted to see what your opinions were.
I interviewed with Dr Sargentini (PhD research in micro) and Dr Ernst (practicing DO anesthesiologist). Both went very well! Dr Ernst sat me down in a La-Z-boy recliner and said, "You sit there because you have to be relaxed in that chair!" And it set the tone for the rest of the interview. Dr Sargentini did a walking tour of the microbiology labs before going to his office.
Neither tried to trap me with any "impossible" questions or anything. And of course admissions interview was more of a formality. She asked me some questions for some survey and told me a little more about Kirksville.
Sorry for the long post! I'm just so excited about being accepted here! I can't wait to begin!!
rddoms 11-08-2008, 07:19 PM I interviewed with Dr. Dr. Rhodes (she has a DVM and a PhD). I also interviewed with Dr. Roof, an anesthesiologist. I was intimidated by Dr. Rhodes in the very beginning, but she is very friendly. Dr. Roof is also very friendly, and didn't try to grill me on anything.
e p i c 11-08-2008, 07:56 PM Last year had a very impressive matchlist (I haven't looked at any previous years). Anyone current students care to elaborate on that.
Cp22kjer 11-08-2008, 11:12 PM I had Dr. Laird and Dr. Ousterhaut (spelled wrong I'm sure). Both were very conversational. I hit it off really well with Dr. Laird and I think being that he was the dean really helped my cause. The second interview seemed so-so, I felt I could have performed better but I suppose things worked out in the end.
It was a great day. The dean was very confident in KCOM and the top education provided. This gave me a really good vibe on top of everything else that I found to be so strong about the school.
Cp22kjer 11-08-2008, 11:29 PM Last year had a very impressive matchlist (I haven't looked at any previous years). Anyone current students care to elaborate on that.
NOT a current student but figured I'd add 2007 for you:
The 2008 list is amazing and to be honest 2007 is probably as good if not better.
3-Neurosurgery, 5-Ortho (with one at Mayo), 4- Radiology, 1-ENT :if your interested in competitive specialties.
Not to mention matching students into Cleveland Clinic, Case Western, and a few at Mayo.

MossPoh 11-12-2008, 10:41 AM Wow, they must've really hated me then.
Pegasus1731 11-12-2008, 11:25 AM That's probably changed. I think those are the 2006 class numbers. I think last year there were closer to 4000 apps, not sure about the rest of the numbers.

So, they hated me a little less. ;) I'm really not bitter. I was more hurt because of the time, money, and studying for a major exam that went down the tubes to be rejected. I liked the school, but I probably wasn't really what they were looking for. As I said earlier...I don't think I was osteopathic enough and I'm no good at giving lines if I don't believe. :p

Hey man thats sufficient enough for me. I NEVER gave lines at my interviews. Luckily I didn't have interviewers that were hardcore OMM or anything. Funny thing is I don't think Osteopathic med was brought up once at KCOM.
caseyjeans06 11-13-2008, 11:10 AM I would call the admissions office and see what they can share what they require for interviews. But I would definitely apply, and if you don't get accepted this year, you can retake the test and reapply next year.
caseyjeans06 11-13-2008, 11:15 AM Well I was just rejected post-secondary. It took 2 weeks from the date I submitted my secondary and was received via snail mail. I have a 3.2, 27P, lots of ECs, years of employment in a hospital, 2 years research experience, LOR from a KCOM alumnus. I'm bummed but what are you going to do? Good luck everyone!
If you're really interested in getting in, you could always reapply next year! I know that I didn't get in my first time around and so I spent my year off getting a Masters in Health Administration through ATSU. I did well in the program, which boosted my cumulative, and I worked in a doctor's office during that time. If your application isn't terribly strong this year, start finding things to make it stronger next year. Persistence is very attractive to medical schools!
caseyjeans06 11-13-2008, 11:22 AM I've got an interview @ KCOM on November 15th...any particular suggestions? I know the DO letter was optional, but is it a big strike against you if you don't have one (I used a letter from my supervisor at a teahouse I worked at for the "professional" letter)? My stats are good (3.63/31P, with great rec letters and ECs).
I didn't have a DO letter of rec and I got in to KCOM, so i wouldn't worry too much about it!
Cp22kjer 11-13-2008, 11:28 AM Hey Casey what year are you?
I interviewed today, and I feel it went well. My first interview ended pretty quickly, and the guy was really nice (and since he was basically a human qualude, I relaxed me quite a bit), but the early ending had me worried. I had a nurse interview me as well, and I had a great deal to talk to her about.
My question for those of you accepted, did you call them the following Wednesday or Thursday, or do they call you?

They usually call on WEDNESDAY. Good luck. Length of interview is in no way a reflection of how good/bad you did.

They called me the following Wednesday, and I interviewed on a Friday. I do know that it took two weeks for some people to find out, so if you don't hear from them this Wednesday don't get worried. I'm sure you did great, if they invite you for an interview you have really good chances of getting in. Good Luck.
smellyfeetman 11-14-2008, 09:11 AM They told me they would be calling on Thursday, but the call came on Wednesday.
I'm so excited to hear back, it's all I can think about. One of the greatest thing was how much my wife loved the school and the town. They offer so many ammenities for the students and their families that I can't even consider going anywhere else if I get accepted. Hopefully I'll be part of the class of 2013.
alb565s 11-15-2008, 03:11 PM True that Jug! I've heard other people say that too--that KCOM, moreso than many other schools, has lots of great amenities for families.
I really hope you get accepted! Once you get your letter, tell your wife to check out SAA (http://saafriends-kcom.blogspot.com/) (Student Advocate Association-- there are other internet links but you have to be a member to access them) it has loads of members and about every special interest category you can think of! And if you have kids...you'll fit in even better! It seems like half or more of all students up here have kids or are expecting to have kids soon.
Post back once you know!

Yeah, I took her with on the interview, and they had a whole day planned for the spouses and families. One of the presentations she got was on the SAA and the wellness program.

The admissions staff and the student ambassador I stayed with actually suggested Kansas City (unfortunately... after I had purchased the ticket to St. Louis); apparently, rental car check in time from Kansas City is ~5 minutes (St. Louis took ~1 hour), and the drive is quicker.
Bring an audio cable for your iPod in the rental car... it's a long haul up there. PM if you have any specific questions.

Kansas City I think is 2 hrs away, St Louis is just over 3. However, the highway from KC is trickier to follow (especially at night) and it becomes 1 lane for quite a while whereas the route from St Louis is 2 lanes in either direction and easier to follow- take I-70 West to Columbia (>1.5 hours), then take Hwy 63 North to Kirksville (another 1.5 hours). Either way gets you where you need to go. Frankly, if the ticket is cheaper through STL then go there.

I don't know if I can handle another week of waiting to hear. I find myself in a nervous state I've never been in before, can't really focus on anything, class and work alike.
No one else is waiting anxiously with me to hear back from KCOM? I feel alone in the process.

PreMed1225 11-19-2008, 04:02 PM Congratulations to all who have been accepted. Question - Is KCOM your number one choice? And if so why? I thought the school was pretty solid, the faculty seemed nice, and Kirksville was cool. I'm just not sure my wife and I would want to move again after only two years to do my clinicals somewhere else. How does everyone else feel about that? Is it not that big of a deal?

KCOM is a perfect fit for me. As far as my family, I will be leaving them here and going to Kirksville by myself. I may be able to come back for rotations...but that is to be seen. I moved them around enough while I was in the Navy and I know they will be OK without me for a while. I have my pilot's lic. and will be able to pop in and out; weather permitting.

First and only choice for me but it was kind of a no brainer for my situation. Don't count out Northeast Regional Hospital. I think there are 10+ spots available to do clinicals in Kirksville-- something else to consider.
I am in. I was at work when they called, but kind of just snuck off to call them back. I am so excited to be a part of this school. It is my first choice, so now I can just focus on coming up with the deposit. Thanks for the support SDNers.
obbobbo 11-19-2008, 10:48 PM I recently interviewed at KCOM. I really liked the area. I was impressed with the organization of the school. I've already typed a lot about it on my blog. You can read it here (http://osteopathic-med-student.blogspot.com/search/label/ATSU-KCOM). KCOM offers a lot of stuff not available at other schools.

Thanks, thoredius. If you are for sure attending KCOM, I suppose we will be classmates next fall.

That was a good post. Thanks obbobbo. I interviewed early at KCOM(like the first day of interviews). I am glad I interviewed because, I was very pleasantly surprised with the school. This school will definitely offer a top-notch education with a chance at high board scores, which I consider to be the most significant characteristic of a med school. To me KCOM is like the best-kept secret ever.
Initially, I just wanted to get into medical school. But now that I have been accepted, I have the hard decision of making the choice between schools. I have been accepted to an MD school, and couple of D.O. Schools. I feel so lucky for the acceptances, especially since this was my third time applying.
Currently, I am waiting to hear back from TCOM. I am probably going to send my deposit to KCOM in the mean time. I will be happy with either school. I think KCOM’s concerns and care for student w/ spouses is awesome. Hopefully, there are some single people attending though. lol.. since I am single.
Wish everyone the best, especially those waiting to hear back or interviewing at KCOM in the future.

Thanks.

The waitlist will move, what may be more important is how far down it you are. I would attempt to find this out as it could give you a better idea of your chances. In my opinion its not too pushy to send an LOI. I'd send one in your position too. It can't hurt. Best of luck !

No problem! :)
Congrats! I'd say that ATSU has had forever to work out the kinks. Top notch.
AZCOM is newer, but seems to be doing a fine job. Also, they are a branch of Midwestern, which has had nearly the same amount of time to work out the kinks (CCOM is almost as old as ATSU). Rotation site quality is probably a little less dependable at AZCOM.
Other than that, I know the environments are very different, i.e. suburbia vs. the sticks. You'll have to be there for at least 2 years, so make sure your happiness with the world around you will be at an acceptable level. Good luck!

i don't know about prices, but maybe the shorter drive would be from KC rather than STL? they should send an emial about staying one nite with a student if there are any available. That way you could get insider info. good luck!

popcorn11 12-02-2008, 11:48 PM Hey guys! I just got an interview offer today. I was wondering how much time is given to decide if you want to go to the school after acceptance?
Because I'm still waiting to hear back from other schools whether I will get an interview or not so I dont know how soon I should make the interview.
Thanks in advance for any advice!
00686 12-03-2008, 06:25 AM Just thought I would let any waiting students know that I canceled my interview for tomorrow because of acceptance to DMU. So that means if you are waiting there is one more sport open now so maintain hope! Waiting is by far the hardest part of the application process. Good luck!

Relativity 12-04-2008, 01:02 PM Hi Guys,
Did anybody recieve information on or know about the housing options? Or the availability or rent of KCOM owned apartments?
307Doc 12-04-2008, 06:14 PM Hi Guys,
Did anybody recieve information on or know about the housing options? Or the availability or rent of KCOM owned apartments?
Just be patient. The first round of accepted peoples deposits aren't even due for another week and a half. Last year, KCOM sent out all the housing and IT stuff sometime after that first deposit was paid. So if I'm remembering correctly I didn't get mine until sometime in January. It will come. You may be able to access the KCOM housing Database right now, I"m not sure if it requires a password or not. But it gives you a list of apartements that people rent just to KCOM students. You will also recieve some info about KCOM owned student apartements. So all the information you desire will come. I remember how hard it was to wait for everything, but it does get there. Enjoy your time before you are in school. This time next year you will be studying. So enjoy undergrad or your job, whatever it may be. Good luck, If you have questions that I can answer for you, don't be afraid to PM me.
Pangs05 12-04-2008, 09:46 PM finally got the last LOR in... I'm praying for a miracle (an interview!!!) :xf:
natrod13 12-08-2008, 02:24 PM So at the interviews did you guys recieve information about clinical rotation sites? I'm researching the school right now and that part of the website is being "updated," and I was just wondering about the specific hospitals/cities the rotations are at. I am specifically wondering about CO and UT. Any help would be appreciated!
rddoms 12-08-2008, 04:49 PM Call the Clinical Educational Affairs department, and they would be able to give you the info you need. Also, you could ask for the rotation booklet during your interview, and they would most likely get it to you right then and there (during the times where you sit in centennial hall by the original ASO cabin). The admissions staff is there to answer any questions you have, and are really good at doing so.
Pangs05 12-10-2008, 09:56 AM hi! this question may have been posted already (sorry).. but I've got to ask, how long does it usually take before you hear an inivitation for interview? I called admissions and they told me my file is up for screening yesterday. Also, do they inivite you by email? Your input will greatly reduce my anxiety. :) thanks a lot!! :)
High Rolla 12-10-2008, 10:45 AM pangs05,
I received an interview invite by email a week after my application was screened.

I sent in my deposit on december 2nd and heard back via email from donna sparks on 8th. Just email donna sparks, if you dont hear back by friday, she is super-friendly. Did you get the mail certified or have return receipt? I did, so I also knew through tracking that atleast it got there.
caseyjeans06 12-10-2008, 12:37 PM Hey Casey what year are you?
Hey CP,
I thought I had written back but I couldn't find it. I'm a second year, but I'm one of the ambassadors with the school. Feel free to direct any questions at me! I'm always happy to help!

Crelal 12-10-2008, 11:00 PM Just a note- will be withdrawing my acceptance this week. LOVED KCOM, but our family is diverse, and the nearest diversity was too far away for our comfort.
If that didn't have to factor into the decision, things would have been different.
Good luck to everyone :luck:

I just sent my LORs electronically using Interfolio. I did not use their forms, I'm pretty sure you don't have to.

mranxiety 12-14-2008, 08:34 PM Hello all! I have an interview at KCOM this Friday, Dec. 19th! Anyone else? I've been reading through the posts, but wondered if anyone had more suggestions for the interview? Also, I have a tendency to be shy in interviews. For those who have interviewed and been accepted and may have that personality, did the interviewers help at all in bringing out your personalities? (that is very specific, but in general if you have advice, I would appreciate it!)
Boges 12-15-2008, 08:32 AM Re letters of recommendation forms: thanks for the replies.
rddoms 12-15-2008, 09:18 AM Look at the interview this way: you have the stats to be accepted and succeed at KCOM, so the interview is to see if you will fit with the school.
With that in mind, try your best to do away with the shyness. You know that you have the stats to get in, so put your best foot forward. My interviews didn't really deal with my stats for more than 5 minutes each, and the rest of the time was spent trying to get to know me by the interviewers.
This isn't to say that shy people don't get in, but it would be in your best interest to try and get over it (at least for the interview). Remember, an interview means that you have the stats to get in, so they want to get to know you.
Good luck!
223319 12-15-2008, 10:29 AM Hey
Has anyone that has been accepted or interviewed at Kirksville this year have similar stats as me? I am just trying to figure out if i should completely lose hope. Here are my stats:
MCAT: V:8, PS:6, BS:8 =22 O
Science cum: 3.6
overall cum: 3.63
I have great clinical experience and ECs as well as great LORs
brianjg 12-15-2008, 01:29 PM Anyone else get a little excited when they got an email from ATSU today, maybe expecting an interview, only to find out it was a Christmas card. I did. :( Cool card though!
mranxiety 12-15-2008, 04:32 PM Thanks for the advice, ddoms!
I saw a lot of posts about ethical questions in the interviews...any examples?
Thanks!
kund2 12-15-2008, 08:29 PM If anyone is trying to switch January interview dates please PM me. I am trying to reschedule my interview so I can visit DMU and KCOM in the same trip. Thanks, and good luck to all!!!

Lithium311 12-17-2008, 10:23 AM gahh!!
I got a missed call from KCOM today. I interviewed on Dec 4th so I'm guessing it was an interview decision. When I called back they couldn't figure out who had called me and a decision wasn't in the computer. They told me they'd call back.:scared: Soooo I am zooming around my apartment freaking out.

Lithium311 12-17-2008, 12:24 PM I just got called back by Dylan! I'M IN!! This is so great. I feel so relieved happy ecstatic and just so excited!!
RMSgolfer- CONGRATS! when did you interview?
rmsgolfer 12-17-2008, 12:53 PM The 11th. I was surprised when they told me it would take 2-4 weeks to receive and answer, but I had a feeling I would receive their decision today. Holy balls this feels good. This is my second acceptance but this one feels way sweeter. Loved KCOM.
Congrats to you as well Lithium311. ENJOY BABY ENJOY!!!!
neonlightening 12-17-2008, 02:12 PM I just got accepted at KCOM and also at PCOM and have a hard decision ahead of me, but a couple questions that I have for those KCOMer's out there.
How are the rotation selections set up? I know KCOM has a wide selection of places to do rotations in. Is is possible to do a rotation say in Arizona, another in Denver, another in Florida and say go international for yet another rotation? Or are you restricted to a certain area once you select?
Do many of your classmates have pets? Is there housing that is open to having pets? (The student I stayed with had both a dog and a cat but she and her husband had bought a house)
What are the best areas around KCOM to find an apartment/house? I've seen Scott St. recommended any others? On Scott street what are the apartment complexes to look at? Easy places to find roommates? Did any of you go out to Kirksville early to find a place or did you do it online?
How active are KCOM students, are there many students into running, cycling....and other outdoor activities?
congrats to those that also received spots in the class of 2013, I may be joining you!!!

Congats on your acceptances!!!! Here's a couple answers to your questions, (then back to cramming).
- The rotations are set up that you pick one and go to that area, but in some ares you rotate between hospitals. But there lots of options, (Arizona, Utah, Michigan, Missouri...the list goes on). Not sure about the international thing
- I currently live in Scott St and LOVE it. Some students live in the student housing, but there are a lot of options outside of that. Best way is to contact a local realtor here, (Heritage House is really good). Best bet is to make a trip here to find something, I wouldn't do it online
- I've got a friend with a cat, and two more with dogs. I personally am pet-less :thumbdown
- The student body is VERY active, and KCOM supports that 100%. Free gym membership and free use of the local pool. Lots of 5ks out on by KCOM as well. I'm currently training for an Ironman, and have gotten a lot of support from the students and staff, (though some think I'm nuts...)
Hope this helps, :) I've got to get back to studying :thumbdown:thumbdown
Maybe see you next year! :D

Brian, I got called on a Monday for an interview that same Thursday because some poor guy broke his leg and canceled -- primarily because I live in the area and figured I could come on short notice...maybe if you call them and ask? They are super friendly at the admissions dept!! Good Luck!

My interview isn't until 1/25, but this is what I have booked based on a graduates advice. I am flying into KCI and getting a rental car for the remainder of the trip. Its about 2.5 to 3 hours drive. I booked the car for a two day rental and airfair for <$300. Not bad considering I am traveling from the east coast. Hope this helps.

I wanted to add a few more details to answer your questions...
The rotation process begins toward the beginning of your 2nd year. It consists of 2 mock matches and then the final match sometime in October. During the mock matches each student goes into a computer system and rank orders their top six choices. The results are sent out so that students can see where they stand and adjust their order if they need to. In mid to late October the official match lists are submitted and results are released within a few days. This determines a student's core rotation site. A list of current sites is posted on the KCOM website. During the 3rd year, students are required to do their rotations at this site. As Pegasus1731 mentioned, some sites are simply one hospital while others (Denver and Phoenix primarily, at this time) have a host of hospitals that students will rotate through. During the 4th year, students can work with their regional coordinators to do their elective rotations just about anywhere that will accept them. HPSP students will do their military rotations at this time. Other students can spend about half of that year in completely different rotations if they choose. There are more details, but nothing that you need to worry about at this stage. Hope that helps...
Housing- I would agree that you should go out sometime and look at apartments, but it is not a necessity if you simply can't afford it or squeeze it into a busy schedule. I would recommend that you speak with someone at Century21 or Heritage house and give them the specifics of what you are looking for. They can even tell you what is available and probably give you pictures if you need to make a decision form afar. There are several pet-friendly places around town. There are a few near KCOM, but many are further away. While this simply means a 5-10 minute drive instead of a walk I would suggest that you contact a realtor early if you are dead-set on a pet to get something closer if that's what you want. You can also contact the admissions office for a list of apartments/houses for rent or sale by current students.
Feel free to send me a private message if you have any other questions

Webghost 12-25-2008, 02:51 PM Hi Guys!
Don't know a whole lot about KCOM and MO is general, but I was just wondering if you guys also applied to KCUMB? I realized I didn't and now am wondering if I should. I know KCOM is the "mecca" but what made you guys pick kirksville over kansas city?
Also, it seems that many students with families are at KCOM because the administration/faculty are so supportive. I think that is great, but are there single people too?! I'm from L.A. and just wondering how well I'd fit in, and what 3rd and 4th year would be like for someone wanting to get back to the west coast.
Thanks!

When I interviewed I was done by around noon, if my memory serves me correctly. Once the interviews are over, you eat lunch and go on a tour, but none of that is required. I know that there were a couple folks who interviewed that day who had to leave to make it back to the airport and they had no issues whatsoever. You should be fine, as long as your departure time is late enough out of MCI...
Hope that's helpful. Good luck!
BAM502 12-26-2008, 08:35 PM My interview portion of the day was done around noon, but after that is a tour which would be very benaficial to take if you get multiple acceptance offers.
As to the post above about KCUMB, I have applied and have an interview there in January. I have visited the school before and really liked it. My only concern was where it was located. Overall they have a good carriculum, but if im accepted there as well, I think I'm going to choose KCOM largely due to prestegious residency placements, smaller class size, and I think Kirksville would be a great place to live.

I'm debating on that too. I've read through the discussion thread and everyone's been driving there from st.louis or kansas city. No airlines seem to fly directly into Kirksville. I'm probably going to fly to st.louis and drive or find some other sort of transportation.
I called the admissions office to see what they would recommend but they're closed until jan 5th =( I'll decide afterward.

There is an airline that flies between STL and Kirksville, but I have heard that they frequently cancel due to weather conditions. Here's the link. http://www.kirksvillecity.com/Kirksvilleregionalairport/flightinfo.htm
I have an interview next month and I was going to fly to Des Moines and drive, but I decided against that due to possible road conditions. I am now flying into Kansas City and driving to Kirksville. I think KC is about 30 miles closer to Kirksville than STL is, and I know it is divided highway for the majority of the drive. Good luck to you.

Yea.. I thought about driving too, but I'm worried that the road conditions will be bad (snow/ice/heavy rain/etc)... So I'm leaning toward flying into Kirksville airport... Let me know what you decide =)
bocciball 12-29-2008, 11:14 AM Fly into St. Louis and rent a car. The car companies offer complimentary pick up from the airport to their facilities. The rental facilities are directly off the highway. Once on the highway you only need to take two exits to get to Kirksville. Enterprise Rent-a-car was the cheapest for me. However, for older people other rental services may be less expensive. I also recommend staying with a student. The student I stayed with showed me around campus and gave me an unfiltered version of the school. Kirksville is great and I will most likely be going there next year.
Best of luck.

You can also fly into Kansas City and or Chicago and catch an AMTRAK train from there to La Plata station( 12 miles from Kirksville) . I believe from Chicago it leaves at 3:15 PM and arrives in La Plata at 8 ish PM. Some of the hotels on the KCOM website have shuttles from the train station. As for the Kansas City train I think it is two hours but leaves in the morning ---7:45ish AM arriving in around 10. Both AMTRAK stations are 18 to 20 miles from the airports... & according to AMTRAK - the average distance.
I am also debating whether to drive or train, but I called before the 23rd to ask about options.
Anyway wanted to let you know the other options.
Best of Luck

I flew into St. louis, rented a Car and drove to kirksville. The drive was about 2 hours and 45 minutes of open road. I think the trip turned out to be cheaper compared to taking a $75 one way flight from/to kirksville.
If staying more than one night I recommend getting a hotel one night in kirksville and one in st. louis. I used hotwire to find hotel in st. louis and called the hotel for kirksville. Good Luck, you will love the people and the school.

Have volunteered at a homeless clinic for 4 years, worked as a phleb for 3 years, student gov't in college, alcohol and drug awareness program mentor, Big Brother for Big Brothers Big Sisters(Big Brother of the Year 2008 for my city-chosen among 1700 others), two undergrad research projects, 2 years post-grad research (no pubs), Volunteer healthcare for the homeless research project (ongoing), Organized a fundraiser (2K for breast cancer) and various others......I'll spare you!!!
Would it be ridiculous to still apply?
I recently shadowed a DO, and was very impressed. Did some research and I really like the philosophy. Currently I have had 2 MD interviews with decisions pending, and 7 MD schools to hear from.
Any advice would be much appreciated!
ktt967 01-12-2009, 02:29 PM Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could help me start the essay about qualifications. I know what i want to say in the contents, however, I'm not sure how to start the introduction.
Also, the prompt says please limit to 500 words or less. Is it wise to use 250 words? Or should I get as close to 500 words as possible?
Thanks
Pangs05 01-12-2009, 04:14 PM hey guys, i got a letter from Adcom today stating that my application is on hold for further consideration. Is anyone in the same boat as I am? Does this pretty much say this is the end of the line for me? Thanks a lot, your feedback will be greatly appreciated. :)

Word limits are in place so the adcom does not get barraged with an applicant thesis about why you want to go to school there. Therefore, the more concise and to the point your essay, the better. If they give you the opportunity to use 500 words I would try to use at least 300. You should not worry if you are close to 500, however. The application will not let you go over.
mashmetoo 01-13-2009, 07:37 AM Hi everyone, I got an interview on March 2nd! I was wondering what kind of dress code is expected. Did all the male interviewees go in a suit? Or is a suit too formal?
