View Full Version : Took test today, Thoughts?
Dancingah 06-18-2008, 05:50 PM Whew, finally took it.
PAT: 20
AA: 19
TS: 19
BIO: 18
GCHEM:21
OCHEM:19
RC: 22
QR:13
Is the math a big deal? I am taking Precalc this fall and Anatomy this summer so could bring up the 2 lowest scores, but would love to know if these would be acceptable with the schools I am looking at:
Arizona School of Dentistry <- 1st choice
Case Western Reserve University
Creighton University
Loma Linda University
Midwestern University
Oregon Health Sciences Center
University of California, L.A.
University of California, S.F.
University of Colorado
University of Louisville
University of Nevada, Las Vegas
University of Pacific
University of Southern California
University of Washington
I am good on GPA with BCG at 3.59 and overall 3.4, community service rocks, and have good references. Should I plan on retaking it this fall?
harrygt 06-18-2008, 05:52 PM Good scores overall, except the QR.
BOY, calc has nothing to do with QR. you can't improve your QR with calc. All you gotta do is do more timed practice and improve your basic algebra with practice. Taking CALC III would not even help a tidbit.
Orgodox 06-18-2008, 06:35 PM harrygt he said he is taking precalc not calc which would help a little. The rest of your scores are very good can you duplicate them if you took it again and really practiced QR. I dont know for sure but I heard schools have cut off and I dont know exactly how it works though and what sections that goes for
Dancingah 06-18-2008, 08:17 PM The class is supposed to cover things liske basic trig and geometry which is part of what killed me since I had never taken either course. I feel really good about everything else on the DAT, anyone know how big a deal it is to have a low math score on your application? I have good grades in math classes, but I used a calculator which of course isn't available.

Sorry, my bad. I thought you said you are taking calc. Yeah, you will definitely get a better QR once you take precalc. I mean, why did you take the test if you have not passed precalc yet? You really need to know trig and those basic stuff in precalc for QR. I'm sure you will improve your QR by at least 8 points after precalc. Try to do a lot of practice, and also get fast in math.

Why don't you call your favorite schools and ask?
Although QR is the least important section, some schools still have cutoff line like 16~17.

13 to a 21 w/ one class? I doubt it, but you could raise to it to averagre 17-18 pretty easily.
Although QR is the least important section
Not entirely, one of his schools (UNLV) factors in the QR in their formula as highly as ochem and bio. They rate RC the highest and don't even look at GChem or PAT.
So to ask again, is the math a big deal with everything else being high?
Yeah it will be, most schools have minimums. Check with some admissions departments, give them your scores, and they'll be honest with you about bringing the score up.

Boy, you should retake it. 13 is really low. you could so something with a 16, or 17, but there is no way you can get in with a 13. Just being honest.

A recent thread referenced a research article put out by Kingsley et al in which they reexamined the correlation between DAT scores on specific sections and dental school GPA (DS-GPA) and NBDE-I scores. DAT BIO was found to have the most significant correlation to NBDE-I scores, followed very closely by DAT RC (and interestingly, DAT QR as the third most significant), while DAT RC was found to have the most significant correlation with DS-GPA followed by... you guessed it DAT BIO (and AGAIN in 3rd... QR... although here, its pearson's correlation value was not considered "statistically significant").
Basically what I took from this article - 1) adcoms most likely put a lot of weight on the RC and BIO section scores, and 2) contrary to what a lot of people say, QR is apparently pretty important.
The sole purpose of this research article was to reexamine the admissions criteria and redefine the formula used for comparing applicants at UNLV.
I'm sure that other adcoms are aware of this article, so even though right now many of us consider QR as the least important section, that trend could change soon...
Bottom line, OP, that QR score has to be improved 3-5 points or I think you might be wasting your money applying since it is a big red flag. Especially considering the apparent competitiveness of this year's applicant pool...
Simiam 06-19-2008, 11:27 AM I would just consider that all over the country when people enter their undergrads RC and QR skills are a must. Even if we didn't have that report claiming importance at BIO > RC > QR you could assume that it is highly important.
QR of 13 is going to be a slight issue. A friend of mine applied last year w/ a 19AA but a 14 QR and he was told at interviews that his QR was really low... They asked about so I am guessing it could be a hinderance. I would retake the DAT in SEPT/OCT if you can. Pull that up to at least a 17 and you should be alright.
Dancingah 06-19-2008, 09:09 PM Sounds good, I just have to keep watching the free chemistry videos on http://www.coursesaver.com for the next few months till I can retake it so I don't lose out on the great science area.
