Very straightforward. One one essay:

"If you earned your baccalaureate degree on or before June 2008, please indicate your plans for the 2008-2009 academic year:"

Payment type: Online credit card vs. Mail in check

I believe you don't have to mail in the signature page if you pay online. Double check though.

anyone have a problem saving the "personal information" section, I kept getting a weird server error earlier.

Edit: looks like they fixed it, it had also said 2007-2008 application year earlier on that page for the what are you doing out of school essay, but that is now fixed too

After, it will show a screen saying print this signature form and mail us money etc, but near the bottom of the page it says click this icon to pay online, in which case it says you don't need to mail the signature form.

Thanks, and you manually typed in 100 dollars? Kind of odd that they have you type it in yourself...

Anyway, I know we are supposed send in two LORs, one from a science faculty, but can we submit more? I know U of Vermont doesn't want anymore than 4.

IF YOU PAID YOUR NON-REFUNDABLE APPLICATION FEE ON-LINE, YOU DO NOT NEED
TO SEND IN THE SIGNATURE PAGE OR THE APPLICATION FEE. Once your
application fee posts to your application, you will also receive an email

I had them sent my entire pre-med committee packet (5 letters) and they didn't care one bit. Got an acceptance out of it. If there are too many to their liking, they might just ignore some of them. It won't hurt you though.

Does anyone applying MDPhD know whether we need 5 letters:
2 for the regular secondary, and 3 research?
Can they overlap at all?

Thanks!

It took two business days for the bank to process. The status/application page says they also received it after it was processed. I'm not sure about when the page updated, though, as I haven't been as neurotic with these essay-less applications.

I applied last year and I sent in 5 letters: 3 for the regular secondary and 2 for research. The school was absolutely fine with that. I'm not sure what the school asks for specifically this year, but generally, I think that as long as you have 2 research letters in addition to your regular LORs, you should be alright.

yeah I did.

it also said "go **** yourself" but i am not sure what meant...maybe good news.

seems like a bunch of pre-interview holds. I got a feeling they are just trying to get their solid state students first, then look at the OOS applicants that are still around and interested. I mean, if they wait until they eval every single applicant (and applicants will keep coming until the deadline) then it will be late in the year or early next year when we hear something. If thats the case, I wont fly to New York for another interview if I already got the spot. Annnd if you really want in, you'll fly back. seems like a good way to keep a bunch of semi-interested OOS in check.

well, thats just waht i think....waaay to many pre-interview holds.

Maybe Upstate feels like they are being used as a backup school by them and will wait till later in the season once some acceptances have gone out then will invite some to interview to see if they are still interested, who knows. My stats aren't that great and I am not on hold yet. Hopefully it says that way*crosses fingers*.

I'm a current student at Upstate. A classmate of mine said that the applications to the school have increased dramatically this year, so the admissions office may take a little longer to review everyone's applications and interview people. I wouldn't worry too much at this point about not getting an interview though. I was an OOS student and didn't interview until February when I applied.

In one of the app, I am marked complete (They have received: Secondary App, fee, and LORs). In the second app, I am marked in complete (They have only received college transcript).

Note that there was no line on the bottom for college transcript in the completed app. Anyone else get the same thing?

Was I just rejected? My status field on my application disappeared a few days ago (from complete to.. nothing) so I emailed them about it. Today I received the following reply:

'A decision has been reached regarding your application. You will be notified of that decision as quickly as possible."

My application page hasn't changed... am I right to assume that this is probably a rejection and it's being sent via snail mail?

I don't get it, I got an interview at Case, but I think I am on hold at SUNY because my status disappeared. I mean, I don't think my application is bad enough for a hold (34R 3.87 gpa)? Is it possible that they have are not interviewing a lot of applicants that they don't think are very serious about the school?

Call them ASAP and ask them to check for your letters. Otherwise, they will pass you by and pick other students. Be proactive in this process because some people fall in the cracks and they don't realize it until the last minute. :woot:

They are trying something new this year and the essays are the only thing your interviewers will have on you, not your AMCAS, grades, MCAT or anything else, just these essays, so write about things you want to talk about. Best of luck with your interview! :luck:

They don't make you write the essay during the interview, you have to turn them in a week before you go. They then interview you closed file, with only those essays to go on....:luck:

I just got the interview invite last night. Whoohoo! It's my first one, so I'm pretty excited. The spots are already hard to come by (mine isn't until Nov 24th). The essays don't look too bad (I can probably cobble some stuff together from other ones I've written) but they don't specify a length. Should I assume like a page is expected? The first essay asks you to write about four interests, so that should take up a decent amount of space.

I don't think they expect a certain length, mine ended up being just under one single spaced page each. But I wouldn't worry about the length, just write until you feel you've covered the question adequately.

at my interview, we heard that the adcom reads your essays when they're making a decision on your application post-interview.

Interviews are closed file so there is no bias introduced from your MCAT, GPA, undergrad institution etc. They want to focus more on who you are and look pass the numbers. So all the interviewers have to go on is the essays you submit. Depending on your interviewers they may or may not read it. I know mine certainly did not.

From what I understood, during the adcom meeting, they read your essays, PS, etc out aloud and then vote. All decisions are made then and they do no revisit applications.

In terms of the confirmation email, don't necessarily wait for it. I think as long as you recheck your status page, the correct date should be there. I got my confirmation e-mail the night before the interview...But that might have been so because it was the 2nd week of interviews.

Good luck!

There's not as much of an advantage for being a NY resident in applying to Upstate as there are for other SUNYs, that's for sure.

IS: 1853 applied, 292 interviewed, 100 matriculated
OOS: 2218 applied, 292 interviewed, 43 matriculated

So the number interviewed is exactly the same (though slightly better IS percentage) but the number of matriculants heavily favors IS applicants. That being said, I have similar numbers to robocop1998 (check my mdapps) and I managed to get an interview with them.

It has always seemed like there was no advantage to being a new york state resident for upsate. However, at my interview they talked about how last years class saw a change in this philosophy and they were going to start accepting more IS people. They said that the IS people were much more likely to practice in that area, so they wanted to recruit more of those kind of people.

Whether or not that is true is still to be determined, I just thought it was very interesting to hear that.

yea, but this could also means they spend the rest of the week reviewing ppl interviewed the day before and you'll get a decision much faster. At least that's what I'm hoping

I'm pretty sure they only meet once a week and that that day is Tuesday or Wednesday where they review the applicants of the week before. I interviewed on 10/1 and was reviewed three weeks after (10/22) which is when I looked at my Application Status and it said "Decision Made." You interviewed the week after me, so I would say don't worry about it until next Wednesday at the earliest. I think they're trying to have 3-4-week turnarounds. You should get something in the mail by Saturday (maybe later; I live in NY so it didn't take too long to get to me). Good luck!

I have been completed since around August 4th and I haven't heard anything. My letters are marked as received clear back on Aug 27th. My online status is just blank, does anyone known what this means? Have they just not got to my file yet to decide about an interview? I have called but was just directed to check online. :P I always feel dumb talking to them after those messages. I am OOS.

For those who are on hold, what are your numbers?

Finally got the nerve to join this site.

Complete: 9/5
Pre-interview hold: 9/17

sGPA: 3.30
cGPA: 3.24
MCAT: 24R (6/07), 27Q (7/08)...not bad considering I worked 60 hours a week during those summers and could only have one day off before the MCAT.

6 years research....few volunteer hours...lots of shadowing and amazing letters of recommendation.

Graduated from Cornell in May...working full-time at Tulane's School of Medicine...volunteering in an ER in New Orleans, tutoring HS students and volunteering through a local organization as a college admissions guide for inner-city HS seniors.

My residency status is in limbo....I lived in Upstate NY for 17 years...but I just moved to Louisiana. Upstate is still my #1 choice.

Franky....I'm surprised they didn't flat out reject me like they did last year. I applied to their Rural Scholars program and with disadvantaged status through AMCAS...maybe that's why I wasn't flat out rejected...but I think I'm still gonna have to pray for a miracle :o

Best of luck to the rest of you!!!!

When I interviewed at Upstate they told me they accept about 350 out of 800 interviewees (out of about 5000 apps). The rest are either rejected or put on one of two hold lists. They said if you're put on the secondary hold consider re-applying because they never make it to that list.

Sorry for the confusion. There are two post-interview hold groups- a "high priority" and "low priority." They told me they haven't made it to the low priority group in years. They didn't mention anything about pre-interview holds but I would think it would be very different with people coming off that list at a different rate- I really don't know though.

As for how many they accept- I think the 350/800 was the final number of acceptances? It could get up to 400 I suppose. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed...

Hey kids,
I go here, and though I'm no official, I did go through this process last year, so I'll try to help.

First off, congrats to everyone who has been accepted so far! If you are waiting on a response post interview, hang tight, they took about three weeks at this point in the cycle and four weeks later on. However, they have changed up their meeting schedule so I'm not sure if the timetable will be exactly the same. In any case, if it says decision made pre-interview, you did not get in. If it says decision made post-interview, you should find out within a week.

To all of you with pre-interview holds, you probably won't get an interview, but a few will, however it won't be scheduled until maybe March. So yeah, it could happen, but don't hold your breath.

Feel free to PM me with any questions you may have about the school! It's a great place, I love it!

I'm just glad we didn't have to write those essays...

If it hasn't gone to committee yet, don't worry. They just need your campus choice before they make a decision, and since they say it hasn't gone to committee, no decision has been made. In fact, the day after it has been reviewed your status page will have a new line that says "decision made". If you got in you should receive a phone call within about a week. If you were waitlisted you will receive a letter.

It might have had something to do with me running on a wintel mac and not on a windows machine, but I haven't had issues sending word docs to anyone else running windows.... Anyway, I said I would send them as soon as I got back, but wasn't able to send them until two weeks later. Crazy schedules are crazy. :(

I just uploaded my essay (11/13) and my interview is 11/19 - do you think this will impact my application negatively? Or am I just being a neurotic SDNer

I did it 2 nights before the interview and I got in. They have no time to figure out who sent in what when. The essay is something your interviewer has on the day of the interview. It's like a conversation starter. The admissions committee probably doesn't care much about it.

Ouch. Hey, atleast they have not been forcing you to wait for 6 weeks rather than 3....

For those accepted, waitlisted or rejected, how did Upstate let you know (email, snail)? What was the turnaround time like? 3 wks?

I think I was just rejected - my status page went from "Complete" to "Decision Made," but without any interview invite. I'm guessing I'll get some hate mail in my mailbox in the next few days (snail?). For me, about 7 or 8 weeks.

Sigh.

I got an acceptance call 3 weeks after my interview. I heard it can take longer though and they send mail for waitlist/rejections.

I think upstate does not like me... I still have the Interview information!
I submitted my application 9/22 and after 2 months I finally got tired of waiting. I called them this morning and asked if I was missing something, and their reply was, "No, but we misplaced it and just came upon it yesterday. Someone will be looking at it over the weekend and they will make a decision by Monday."

This news was very frustrating seeing as several people have already been accepted and in the meantime my application has not been looked at. I wonder how much this mistake will hurt my chances of getting into Upstate. At least I know that I will be hearing from them this Monday.

I'm sorry to hear that :( Last year, the same thing happened to me. This year, my "Compete" disappeared and I received an email soon after - notifying me of a preinterview hold. I don't think much will come of this, however, so if it's any solace to you, at least you know instead of being dragged along.

for those of you who have written them ....how long were your essays?

for those of you who have written them ....how long were your essays?

I combined 4 previous essays for the first one and wrote a 5.5 page (double spaced) essay, and for the second one a 1.5 page essay. My student interviewer commented on how he liked that I wrote a lot because most people end up writing only one page for each essay, and this gave him more insight into my interests...

I had a dream last night that I got accepted to Upstate... Then I woke up, and I kept looking through my email and phone messages to see if it was real or fake... It was a VERY vivid dream... :(

I thought that one page per essay would be better because then you can expand on each item during the actual interview itself?

AAAA, my status just changed to "decision made"! i had an interview on 10/22 for anyone who is wondering. Now in my mind every second i dont get a phone call from them is a second closer to me getting a rejection letter from them. I can't deal with this... :(

My status changed to "Decision Made" about 1.5 weeks ago. I interviewed on 10/8 and was accepted by phone call today (11/10). No fears if your status says "Decision Made" for a while and you haven't heard anything yet.
Good luck everyone!!!!

Do you all mean those columns at the very bottom of the page that say "Requirement|Received|Note|Status?" Because my status column there is all blank.

I guess it doesn't really matter since I was put on hold way back in like August (I swear it was like 2 weeks after I sent in my app and then I get a hold), but I just want to make sure I'm not missing anything.
