Hey guys,
So i've begun my conquest to tackle the DAT this November and stumbled across a question regarding valence electrons.

It states that Iron, has 8 valence electrons 4s2 3d6. Can someone explain to me why the valence is not 2 electrons? I was always told valence electrons are the furthest orbital. So its understandable why it may not be 4s2 because 3d6 would be further from the nucleus but then why do you add them?

A clarification on the subject may be a bit more helpful then the answer.

I appreciate it!

Valence are the farthest SHELL! not orbital!
