I'm an MS4, applying this year.

I'm almost done with an away elective at a place where I'd really like to go for residency.

I'm worked some with the assistant program director, and when I asked for mid-rotation feedback he said lots of good things and no bad things at all.

So I'm thinking about asking for a letter. (This would be a second ophtho letter and would replace a medical or surgical letter in my primary CAS application.)

My question is: Is it weird to ask the assistant program director at a place that is not my home program to write me a letter? I almost feel like it's asking him to write a letter to himself, although obviously a lot of other PDs will see it also.

Is this kosher? Should I ask him?

If he is willing to write you a favorable letter, then go for it! I think you will still need a letter from a medical or surgical rotation too.

(I'll still have a medical or surgical letter. Previously, I was thinking of having both a medical and a surgical letter and 1 ophtho letter. If he agrees, it would be 2 ophtho and either a medical or surgical letter. I can still always send the "extra" letter to those programs that accept additional LORs.)
