Are you learning it just to get ahead for the coming year or are you going to be taking your DAT soon? heatwheat 07-21-2008, 08:29 PM Yikes.. Are you learning it just to get ahead for the coming year or are you going to be taking your DAT soon? Well, I took O-Chem 2 years ago, and have forgotten most of it. I'm just looking for something that will help bring it back and lay everything out for me nicely. Orgodox 07-22-2008, 08:36 AM I have a few suggesting but whats your time table? Whens your exam and how much time do you have to learn OChem? drgreen 07-22-2008, 09:30 AM Organic Chemistry as a Second Language I and II Wow, I'm impressed you have heard of Organic Chemistry as a Second Language, I was just going to recommend it. The books are each approximately 300 pages. Don't let this intimidate you, because the reading is quick, the pages are small, and the concepts are clear. heatwheat 07-22-2008, 11:07 AM So more than one person has recommended Organic Chemistry as a Second Language. Has anyone else used this book with any success? Oh ya, I'm taking the exam in about 5 weeks. doc3232 07-22-2008, 11:15 AM I have a few suggesting but whats your time table? Whens your exam and how much time do you have to learn OChem? Answer this question first. Our answers depend on how much time you have for Ochem. heatwheat 07-22-2008, 11:17 AM I can devote 2.5 weeks solely to O-Chem. And the last 2.5 weeks do O-Chem 2 times per week. Orgodox 07-22-2008, 11:27 AM Yea Second laguage is a good book but it really focuses a lot on mechanisms. Im not sure if you have enough time for that. Definatly get the first one its a great start. If you do both dont get caught up to long in the details of some of the mechanisms. The books wont cover 1/4 of the other stuff like hybridization, lab stuff (C13 NMR IR which your bound to get at leasdt 2 questions) .... so start there but really dont go crazy with the mechs its not important AT ALL for the dat aside from the fact that it makes perfect sense and elimnates the need to memorize but at least for me when I was learnig organic it took me a while to get familiar with some of the mechanisms that I look back on now and think they are simple. However if you can UNDEERSTAND this stuff which is put into VERY easy to get terms and then you can easily move on to DERSTROYER to really learn the stuff and focus on what you need for the DAT. (The second book has a lot of 3 to5 step synthesis: you wont need any of that for the dat but will only need to predict the product from given reagents or asked which 2 compuinds when treated with something will form what they give uyou which is simple caze your given everything and its only one step) so im just afraid without quidence you can waste time int he second book which does however contain a lot of valuble stuff |
