View Full Version : Wake forest internal medicine residency
oci25 07-25-2008, 09:02 AM I have become interested in the Wake forest IM residency program based on both the location and its reputation but I really am not familiar with it beyond that. I was wondering if anyone had info on:
1. What is general profile of people who match (I got a 217/90 on the Step 1, and attend West Virginia School of Medicine) and if there is anything I should do outside of the obvious that would improve my chances of matching there.
2. What type of autonomy, call, other things about the program that are interesting are.
3. what winston salem is like (cost of living, potential for raising a family)
4. And anything else that is good to know about the program
thankyou for your time and any help you can give me!

I'm a 4th year medical student at Wake but I'll try to answer your questions
For schedule questions, check out: http://intmedweb.wfubmc.edu/ and scroll down to schedules. For inpatient medicine there is a night float, interns on the service are on call on Fri-Sunday, with Sunday call relieved in the evening by the night float.
Regarding autonomy second year residents will serve as the upper level on gen med for a service that is capped at 20. During the weekends they will be on call and cover two services for a maximum total of 40 patients. How much freedom you have to make decisions on your patients is attending dependent but the majority of the attendings prefer to let you run the service.
Winston-Salem is extremely affordable and a great place to raise a family. Check out this website: http://www1.wfubmc.edu/housing
Doing an away rotation here and meeting our faculty would certainly help your chances, I don't even think it would necessarily have to be as an AIM. You would have to apply through VSAS. Looking at our current housestaff it appears that there is at least one resident who graduated from WV and you may want to get in touch with your student services office to find out their contact information. There are also WV grads in Peds and on OB/gyn and I'm sure in other departments as well.
I also believe your school recently stole Dr. Julia Cruz from our Heme-onc department. She would probably be an excellent resource for you.
oci25 07-25-2008, 12:27 PM thanks I appreciate the answer, it was very helpful. any other info is welcome.
dragonfly99 07-25-2008, 02:11 PM No personal knowledge of Wake because I didn't do med school or residency there, but I know people who have been through the cards fellowship and the loved it. I got a good vibe when I visited the place once.
oci25 07-26-2008, 07:46 AM thanks for the input. any other advice still welcome
muscles 07-26-2008, 08:34 AM i interviewed there for residency - great people, very friendly program director. Hospital is beautiful, if I remember correctly, they are building a new ICU, and they have a CHICK-FIL-A in the hospital.

Wait. WHAT?! OP MUST as a matter of principle try and match there at all costs now. If I had known this, would have sent an app. This NEEDS to be on FRIEDA and their website.
Could you imagine a chick-fil-a sammy every single day for lunch?! When on call!!! Do they provide you with chicken sammy's on call?!
I'm serious, this has got to put Wake up in the top 10. I'm NOT joking.

We have a Dominos Pizza in the hospital but not a Chick-fil-a. For some reason we worked out a deal where we have chick-fil-a sandwiches on Wednesday in the satellite cafeteria (ghettoteria if you will) and on Fridays in the big cafeteria.
Forsyth, the other local hospital, actually does have a Chick-fil-a.
oci25 07-28-2008, 12:47 PM thanks for all the replies. Does anyone know what is a typical board score for matching at wake forest in medicine is, as i am somewhat worried a 217 may not be high enough for me match there (obviously not factoring in research and other CV boosters).

A 217 doesn't garauntee much, but it will be pretty much academic if you take step 2 early and own the test. I don't think the tactics of taking step two early and owning it are often appreciated enough by most candidates. And since you already know about all the CV boosters, I'm not going to rehash those
dragonfly99 07-30-2008, 11:58 AM I think you are overestimating the role of the Step I score in getting in to a medicine residency (other than Harvard, UC San Fran, and a few others).
Still, if you want to know what score might make you competitive, coming from your school, how about contacting some of those former student(s) from your med school you say are there right now, and see if they will tell you. Or your med school career advisor/office, if you have one, might be able to give you a general idea.
I honestly didn't get the idea that Wake Forest would be super duper competitive to get in to for medicine. Some people just want to live in big cities, etc. which leaves more spots at these types of places like Wake Forest.
People underestimate the importance of a letter of recommendation or even just a friendly email/phone call from someone known to the residency program (i.e. faculty who had something to do w/Wake Forest, did residency or fellowhsip there, etc.). Also, if Wake Forest knows you really really want to go there, it might influence them more than you would think.
The fact that they have previously taken students from your school into their program is also a good prognostic indicator for you, assuming those students turned out to be decent residents.
oci25 08-04-2008, 09:51 AM thanks for the advice. I really do appreciate it.
