6. The Committee on Admissions regards the diversity of an entering class as an important factor in serving the educational mission of the school.

The Committee on Admissions strongly encourages you to share unique, personally important, and/or challenging factors in your background, such as the quality of your early educational environment, socioeconomic status, culture, race, ethnicity, or life or work experiences. Please discuss how such factors have influenced your goals and preparation for a career in medicine.

Please limit your answer to 2,000 characters including spaces.

7. What do you see as the most likely practice scenario for your future medical career?

a. Choose the single answer that best describes your career goals.

1. Private Practice

2. Health Policy

3. Academic Medicine

4. Public Health

5. Health Care Administration

b. Why do you feel you are particularly suited for this practice scenario? What knowledge, skills and attitudes have you developed that have prepared you for this career path?

Please limit your answer to 1,000 characters including spaces.

The Stanford School of Medicine curriculum integrates the scientific basis of medicine with clinical practice. A key element of this curriculum is a requirement for in-depth didactic and scholarly activities through participation in a scholarly concentration of your choice. Details of the curriculum and scholarly concentrations are available at http://med.stanford.edu/md/curriculum, which we ask you to review prior to answering the following essay question.

c. How will the Stanford curriculum, and specifically the requirement for a scholarly concentration, help your personal career goals?

Please limit your answer to 1,000 characters including spaces.

8. If you have publications resulting from scholarly endeavors, then in the space below, please complete a citation for each of your publications using the following format: Author, Title, Journal, Volume, Pages, and Date of Publication.* This section applies for papers that have been published or been accepted for publication. Please do not include abstracts or unpublished conference papers.

(Note: no character limit was specified for this last essay)

do they screen?

Woohoo! I was pretty psyched to get this secondary, especially considering my complete lack of research. Anyone know how strongly that factors into a Stanford acceptance?

I'm pretty sure they don't screen, but congrats anyway! :p

They don't screen? Well shucks, so much for my ego trip of the day. I guess that makes sense though, so they maximize their revenue from secondaries.

Sadly. I now have a huge pileup with UCLA, UCSD, and Duke.

Bah.

That's not too bad Shemarty! I have something like 9 secondaries that I still need to do! I'm considering dropping some schools that I'm not as interested in now that I have an interview...I would still be left w/ >20 schools...

Haha, true true.

It's just the nature of the secondaries. Duke + UCSD is a bad combo.

I submitted UCLA about 20 minutes ago, and I'm working on Stanford's, which isn't bad, I agree.

Yea, I'm glad I'm not applying to Duke. UCLA is my priority (almost done), then UCSD, Stanford, and USC.

HILARIOUS. Shemarty and I are talking about it right now. The questions are so similarly worded that it HAS to be for a study. Guess Stanford couldn't pass up the chance to get thousands of data points... so typical.

Yea, "generate data!" seems to be the motto here at Stanford. It's not surprising that they wouldn't want to pass up on a perfect opportunity to run a study (n=6000) about medical school applicants' perspective on the doctor/patient relationship.

imo, they won't be getting applicants' perspective on doctor/patient relationships...they'll be getting applicants' perspective on what the they think adcom's want to hear about doctor/patient relationships.

And I think Stanford's is the fastest essay-based secondary I've done. Finishing up the big essay now then sending it out... I've been sitting on other secondaries for over 3 weeks now...but Stanford is special

"We request at least three but no more than six complete letters of recommendation from persons who know you well enough to evaluate your scholarly potential and promise as a physician. These letters may be accompanied by an undergraduate school's premedical committee evaluation."

So they want three letters of recommendation, is that correct?

They want 3-6.

Their instructions say that if you don't submit a letter from a supervisor of an activity you mentioned, then they'll question the value of that activity.
I called to ask if I could submit more than 6 if they were coming together as a packet. (Because otherwise, I'll end up omitting letters from valuable activities). They said it was ok.

No, they do not want 15 LORs. Use good judgment here.

If you worked in a research lab for 2 years but then don't have a LOR from the PI, it looks suspicious.

Make sure you have LORs backing up your major activities. There are some things that you do where you don't even have a supervisor, or you participated in a non-leadership role so there's not too much a supervisor could say anyway, or it's a hobby like "photography" where a LOR wouldn't make sense...

Also, nowhere does it say that they want professors. They specifically say they don't want profs who only know you in the context of grades/class rank, so I would suggest only submitting a LOR from a professor if they have something exceptional to say about you.

You can also call the admissions office if you have a question. If you say that you have a "quick question" the woman on the phone can help you. Otherwise they forward you to one of the admissions counselors voicemail.

I always wonder with essays like this, where there is a lot of background information specific to the school, is it a good idea to mention specifically what areas one might be interested in? Or is it better to answer more generally?

I answered specifically, and described how my background leads me to chose a particular concentration/application area and continue working with my current advisor/PI on a specific project. I would assume that it's best to be as detailed as you can.

I'm nearly done with Stanford - I have full drafts of the 3 essays, but I'm too scared to hit submit. :scared: I'm going to have a couple more people read them over...

Definitely not cool! How can you be rolling admissions and then make a comment like "If your involvement in a project began during the summer of application, your supervisor will usually be able to provide an evaluation of your performance in ample time to meet our timelines." And there are a number of student activities for which it will be harder to get a letter of recommendation  again, keeping in mind that admissions are rolling.

Again, I think they just mean that if you claim to have done research for 3 years, then not having a letter from the PI will be suspicious. If you claim to have worked as an EMT, then not having a letter from your supervisor will be suspicious. I'm sure they don't expect a letter from every club you were a member of. Just have letters backing up your most significant activities.

I just feel like that comment about activities starting in the summer was made for a reason, and in terms of significance, this is an activity that is continuing beyond the summer...so obviously it is significant, but a supervisor would not have much to say until the fall. Well, all my activities have contact numbers, so if they'd like to factcheck they could theoretically take the time to do that.

Yea - I just started teaching MCAT prep classes this May, but I obviously didn't get a LOR from that. Maybe I'll submit one if I get offered an interview, because you're allowed to send updates then.

You could do the same, save it for an "update."

Thanks shemarty! Ya at first I interpreted the question as if Q2 was asking what do I want to do and Q3 was asking how will Stanford help me do what I want to do... but then I started getting side-tracked from the scholarly concentration thing and talked about other stuff =.=

Is it correct to check off "Academic Medicine", but indicate in my essay that I would like to pursue Primary Care in terms of the clinical aspect?

Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated!

I think you can explain that you want to work in an academic setting but focus on primary care rather than specialize. I'm pretty sure that's not mutually exclusive. The medical students have to do their family practice rotation somewhere.... so those attendings must get to teach!

You should put public health if that's what you're interested in. I know a few med students at Stanford who are interested in public health. I think they want to build a diverse class, not necessarily a class of 86 ppl who want to go into academic medicine.

I'm leaning toward putting down academic medicine, because I want to teach and I think I want to explore clinical research during medical school (I've never done it before). But I can't think of any "knowledge, skills, and attitudes" that i've developed that make me qualified for it. I don't think I know enough about academic medicine and especially if I would be a good fit for it. Ugh
secondaries are so frustrating!

For the publication question, if you were listed in the acknowledgments, would it be fair to list as a publication? Unfortunately, my publications are still awaiting approval so I don't want to list them.

Also, if I do list the publication in which I am acknowledged, how do you list it? It says citation, but when you ask for a pubmed citation, it gives a long abstract. What part do they want?

I'm waiting on this to submit my app because I hear they only accept people with publications...!!!

Calf

That simply is not true. You don't have to have a publication to get accepted.

No, I don't think acknowledgments counts as a publication sadly :(.

Question, for anyone that might know - from Stanford's admissions page:

"The MCAT must be taken within a three year period measured from the time you take the test to the point of intended matriculation. For example, the oldest acceptable score for a student applying for Fall 2008 admission would be August 2006."

Isn't their math wrong here? They say three years, but the example they give is two.

I'm interested in applying next year, for matriculation in Fall 2010. I took the MCAT on August 20th, 2007 (and I am NOT taking it again) - shouldn't my score still be good?

Thanks!

man, the first question is really rough for me. i did my other diversity essays on my academic background, not long-ago challenges hwen i was a kid. i actually have nothing ot say for their examples.. "early educational env, socioeconomic status, culture, race, ethnicity, life/work experience"

hrmm... has anyone lef this blank? it says "strongly encourages"... but i feel like i have absolutely nothing to say

I thought this was strange, too. . . I think that the wording of it makes it seem like if you don't have anything to say for those examples, that you can't answer the question correctly. But I focused on the sentence before that, which makes the essay very broad. . . everyone has unique, personally important and/or challenging factors in their life that have influenced their goals and their prep for a career in medicine.

This is a bit of a reach for me (especially competing against studs like Shemarty), but I have a couple years of really solid bioengineering research, and I feel like of all the top tier schools, I would be the best fit for Stanford.

BTW, Invites don't come out until mid October? Bummer.

hey to all who got interviews, major congratulations, i'm so happy for you!

since i'm applying to this school as well (am in the process of completing the secondary), i was wondering if you guys wouldn't mind sharing what your stats were (gpa's, mcat) just to get a sense of what my chances are of getting an interview.....thank you!

I got an interview too. I go to the same school as TupacalipseT96, so maybe that's why? The lady told me that in the future they are planning to have an online date scheduling system...

This is good news that Stanford is handing out interviews now. From their website:

"All applications will be reviewed for consideration of an interview. The earliest notifications regarding an interview invitation will begin in mid October and continue through April. The Office of Medical School Admissions will inform each candidate whether or not an interview will be granted."

Glad to hear that at least some people are getting them now. October is late!

I am having so much trouble with this first question on this secondary. I was wondering if i could get some advice.

I was thinking about talking about how as a child I grew up poor, and how during college i got a wonderful opportunity to travel the world. I want to talk about how through both of these experiences I have become an empathetic, understanding individual and how these qualities prepare for a career in medicine. Do u think that would work?

They don't pre-screen. It took me close to a month to get their secondary and I was verified in early June. I'd wait a little longer.

Hey, hey, hey! I didn't say that!

The way I see it, I would have already scheduled an interview the same day as LET (this would be in November), so I would have met you before then. And we become bestest friends so that we don't schedule coffee dates anymore...it would be routine for us. And then we all go to Harvard med school (they would accept you without an app, LET because you're that wonderful) and live happily ever after.

Deal. We can invite LET too.

At my Stanford interview there was only 1 other applicant. I was killing time before lunch, and I had SDN open as one of my tabs. He returns from his morning interview and sees me at my computer.

Him: "Do you go on SDN a lot?"

Me: "uh... haha ... yea..."

Him: "What's your username?"

Me: Shemarty

Him: .......YOU'RE SHEMARTY?!

Heh, it's still pretty amusing every time:)

Would it be presumptuous to send an in the area notification to Stanford? I know the NYC schools let you do this, but what about the Bay area ones?

I had it the other way around. Stanford sent me an invite first, so I e-mailed UCSF to let them know that I would be in the area. Two days later, I received an interview invite from UCSF.

for those who recently got invites could you enlighten me with what the earliest available date for interview was at this point? thanks!

Sorry about the late response! I was invited on 11/15 and the earliest available interview date then was Monday, 1/5. Stanford also has this rule where if you are physically living west of the Mississippi River, then you must sign up for an interview day on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. For everyone east of the river, all five weekdays are available. I hope this helps somewhat...

It's still possible! I got an invite recently (about a week after I sent them an "in the area" email), and I was complete in early August, too. Have faith.

"No" as in they cant expedite a decision, or "No" as in "no, we're not going to interview you at all"? I hope its the former :)

If they've already started accepting people who interviewed in mid-November, then they must have already decided on the October and early-November interviewees by now though. I'm guessing that if I don't hear back by tonight, then I've probably been rejected (or waitlisted, at best). :(

Aren't you pessimistic?

1) Dr. Garcia may not have time to call everybody all at once. I wouldn't assume rejeciton/waitlist if you don't hear back tonight. They promised us we'd hear back by January, so I'd give it until at least January!

2) Maybe they didn't go in order. Both of the acceptees so far interviewed in mid-Nov. Maybe they discussed the more recent ones first. Or maybe those people just got called first. It's weird, but Baylor also accepted a batch of more recent interviewees before they accepted a batch from the 1st interview date. It's anecdotal evidence based on SDN data, but it's still a thought.

Maybe it's like UCLA, which did a small pre-admit. Since Stanford's class is smaller, I'd imagine that they only extended phone calls to their top 10 - 20 choices...meanwhile, the rest of us wait until January for the big batch. Not being notified this week just means they don't really, really, want us -- but they still may deign to have us in the class :)

I think maybe they just hadn't discussed us yet. Only 2 ppl on SDN got in so far, they both interviewed in Nov, and even they were told they weren't going to hear back until January. Maybe the committee had an earlier meeting when they only reviewed a subset of the interviewees.

I sent a post-interview update document (not an actual letter - it was more of an outline).

Post-interview, I emailed to ask about Letter of Interest. "We do not request letters of interest at this stage of the application process. In the event that a student is wait listed, a letter of interest may serve a useful purpose."So, send an update, but save the letter for later.

I wonder if the waitlisted/rejected applicants also get a letter soon, or if all the bad news gets delayed until March-ish. I *think* that since they're totally on rolling admissions, the good and bad news all come on a rolling basis.

I think you interviewed later than some of us? When we had our wrap-up with the admissions counselor, we were told "early January."

1/5 is the first real first business day of January. (Stanford was on winter break the last 2 weeks) Plus, we have reason to believe the adcom already had a meeting, since the interviewers of accepted students were notified. These are probably ppl who interviewed in oct/nov? (Some mid-November interviewees have heard back, so I assume they've already gotten to the Oct/Nov people.) So, we're hoping that those accepted students might be notified next week.

I think you interviewed later than some of us? When we had our wrap-up with the admissions counselor, we were told "early January."
I interviewed exactly one week after Julia Gulia and was told to expect a decision in February. Do you think a one week difference in interview dates would make my decision arrive over a month later? I think maybe different staff members give different estimates on when we'll get a decision.

I have an interview coming up this month. It would be my only California school and I'm totally excited.

However, are the rumors true? I heard that 9 out of 10 California girls are hot. The other one goes to Stanford

Your interviewer will ask "Well, do you have any questions for me?", you could ask your interviewer at that time, may it be a validation or rejection of the rumor.

LOL, you aren't trying to sabotage my chances now are you GloryField?

Anyway, it's not like I'm going to base my decision on something like this. It's just that Stanford sort of has this reputation......

Thanks. Far? I didn't know since I've never been. How far? Either way I have to make the trip. I live all the way East and unless I get accepted at Stanford (the only west coast school I applied to), it will prob be my last chance to visit for the next few years.

Stanford is at least a 5-6 hour drive to LA. Yea, the purpose of the website seems to be assessing the computerized database system, not for premeds to see what the admissions criteria are.

I'm a little surprised they didn't at least require you to log in with a Stanford ID before you could see the screenshots.

Having a publication is good, obviously, but not having any is okay if you demonstrate that you've been involved in a scholarly endeavor of some sort.

Yes, Stanford's a very research-oriented school, but just having your name on a publication probably doesn't make you a shoo-in, and not being published doesn't mean you have no chance.

And it doesn't have to be basic-science research, either.

I don't know... it seems like "publication" may only be an EXAMPLE of an "in-depth experience with significant productivity."

Maybe presenting at a national conference, or something else along those lines, might also earn an applicant a 1 in that category...?

A few questions, hope you don't mind answering,

- when did you hear from your interviewer?

- did you hear from a faculty interviewer, a student interview, or both?

- was the purpose of the e-mail to congratulate you or inform you of your acceptance?

Yesterday, just the student, and I had no idea before the email, so I guess both inform and congratulate? I haven't heard anything from any other source (i.e. the Dean), so if it weren't for my student interviewer, I would be in the dark, too. And obviously, I heard from my interviewers at a different time than others, so I think it's just based on interviewer preference. Some may say nothing at all.

I was able to update other schools with this info, but not Stanford as they don't take pre-interview updates. Guess they'll never know, but maybe there were other parts of my app. that concerned them. Oh well, I know I've been really fortunate with my other acceptances. For me, the green light is admission to Stanford (or UCSF).

"Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that's no matter—tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther. . . . And then one fine morning—
So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."

I looked at the threads from the past few years, and it seems that, if you are in this group (like me) and you didn't receive a phone call tonight, then you can probably expect a waitlist letter to come in a week or so. Phone calls take place on Thursday nights only; there will be no additional phone calls tomorrow. The next round of phone calls will be for late November and early December cohort.

I think that is the case. Also, considering that we were invited so early, I think we will most likely be waitlisted rather than rejected outright.
Are you guys sure? I was told not to expect to hear anything until mid-February, and yet the call came last night. I'm still not convinced they make decisions in interview order.

I interviewed in October and got the phone call last night. Dean Garcia also told me that he had been away and had a lot of phone calls to make. Maybe he'll call more people today or early next week.

Best of luck to all of you waiting:thumbup:

A med student interviewer at Stanford told me:

"All i know is that the first round of calls went out this week. i know the one person i interviewed in the first batch got it...i think they all interviewed a few weeks before you did, so you might not even come up until the next admissions committee meeting in a few weeks. that's all i know though. keep your head up...it's still too early!! :)"

I interviewed on 10/15 though, so I didn't even think there were interview dates a few weeks before that! So, I'm not totally sure what this means.

Yes, Stanford does send rejection and waitlist letters - they did last year, anyway. It's not just silence until March - we are supposed to hear something either way.

Does this confirm that the admissions committee meets once a month, on the first Thursday of every month? It's starting to sound like it, right?

I am not convinced that they CALLED PEOPLE in the order that they interviewed. Its possible that Nov interviewees got called before Oct interviewees. I *am* convinced that not all of the accepted people have received calls so far, since Dean Garcia told CALIbration that he had a lot of calls to make.

Lastly , when I called on Monday January 5th, Greg Vaughn said that I should hear something within 10 days, and if not I should call back. So either that means that Dean Garcia is in the process of making calls over the next several days, or that my letter is in the mail and I will receive it over the next several days. Either way, I hope to hear *something* by next Wednesday.

Again, if you got in, please post on the acceptance thread so the data is available to next year's applicants. It takes so long to read through the thread looking for all the "I got the call!" posts.

I interviewed on 10/6. I think that was one of their earliest dates but that they started in late September. So yeah, there were interviews a few weeks earlier. That means bad things for me though.
