I have actually thought about applying. Do you know if there is a dress code or set schedule for classes each day? Do you know anything about the housing market in VA? Thanks

Hey this is awesome. im excited you replied. well there is a dress code which is basically business casual, no jeans, tang tops, "flirty" attire, sneakers, or open toed sandals. There is a set schedule of classes each day. the four year curriculum is actually broken down into a block schedule. In the first block classes are over earlier than the rest of the first year to allow more time to adjust to the work load. I dont know any real specifics about the housing market but I do know that there are plently of options for housing available to both undergraduates and graduates around the area from Roanoke, Blacksburg, and Christiansburg. I really havent focused to much on deciding what housing I want to look at just yet. I don't want to go to far in until I know a decision from the committee.

I applied to VCOM late in the year for the class of 2012, but instead got accepted early-admissions for the class of 2013. When I went on my interview in March, I absolutely fell in love!

I did not see any students dressed "business casual". They were in comfortable clothes (some were in sweat shirts and pants). Did they change their requirements?

hey MuffinMania and everyone else....congratulations on your acceptance to VCOM.

there is a dress code and u have to dress "professionally" according to their policy. When you interviewed, u probably came during exam week and during that week, we were allowed to wear whatever we want (pajamas will do), but on regular class days, u have to dress nicely (no jeans, etc). Its something you will get used to it. I wasnt a fan of it when i started, but i got used to it and the medical stuff like it very much and regard you highly.

hope this helps.

Guys, I interviewed today and was thoroughly impressed (still can't get over the anatomy lab). However, if accepted I face a predicament that I'd like some of your weigh-in on. The fin. aid office told us that they will not approve over a total indebtedness of $265,000. I go to a private university and have debt lying around. Is this a steadfast rule that can't be changed or is there leeway? For those of you that did private educations, what are you going to do?

VCOM is a great school and I love it here, despite of the surprises everybody gets....

VCOM class 2013, dont let a single comment make you think twice about a school or astray you away from here....sometimes, it gets frustrating to some students just b/c of workload and other internal factors. VCOM is an awesome place and you will love it here. Take this from a second yr who loved 1st yr and is content with his performance thus far at VCOM....

let me know if there is anything i could be of any help! and this is also targeted towards 2012 students...

I would just like to reiterate how much I DO enjoy it here at VCOM. Yes sometimes there are tough weeks, and some of us take it better than others. But Blacksburg is a great place be while in med school and we have some really great professors here as well.

One thing that I really like (may be controversial) is that we start our clinically relevant education VERY early. It makes med school really interesting and easy to study. I know students from other schools that say "second year is harder but more fun because you get to do more 'doctorly' stuff". We get to "do doctorly stuff" basically right away. We mesh basic science and clinical medicine from almost day 1.

Within the last week we had a great lecture on hemorrhagic shock from a EM doc, and some really interesting lectures on hemoglobinopathies and transfusion reactions from other clinicians as well.

VCOM is a lot of fun, and while our schedule may be a bit unpredictable I still love it. We spread the curriculum out throughout the year so our days aren't "too long" and we have frequent breaks to prevent burnout.

If anyone thinking about coming to vcom for the class of 2013 has any questions I would be happy to answer them as well.

I also want to just say when reading this thread it seems like "the issues" basically a few lectures being moved around seems much worse than it is. When I reread this thread I realized that an outsider would read this and think way to far into it. Everything here is going fine- sure we have some disgruntled students- find me a med school that doesn't.

Hey all, I am currently a proud member of the VCOM Class of 2013 and have been for a few months. I need help/advice on where to stay. Does anyone need a roommate or know someone who might? So far, I have looked into: Smith's Landing, The Crossing at Knollwood, Knollwood, and Cedarfield. I am hoping to have housing assured within the next couple of weeks!! Need some advice!!

Congratulations to all you incoming students! Med school can be a great experience and you've made a solid choice in VCOM. I'm a 4th year student (graduating in May!) and I've noticed many of you asking about housing options in Blacksburg/Christiansburg. Well, I'm selling my townhouse and thought I'd throw this option out there for you:
Three bedroom, 2.5 bathroom townhouse. Approximately 1,200 sq ft w/ additional ~600 sq ft in partially finished basement. Other features include: gas fireplace in living room, ceramic tile in kitchen and bathrooms, Brinks Home Security System installed, 2 wooden decks, off-street parking, quiet neighborhood with many VCOMers on the same street (great for support). I live an easy 8 minute drive from VCOM. Also, conveniently located <1mi from the Christiansburg Recreation Center (which you get a membership to as a resident of Christiansburg) and <1mi from a grocery store. For a young couple, small family or someone looking for a roommate or two -- this townhouse has it all over apartment living! $167,000
Check out the picture!
Feel free to contact me for more info... send me a private message and I'll send you my contact information. Thanks and again congrats & good luck at VCOM!

Hello all,

This is my first post, but I'll be joining you all at VCOM in August. I'm looking into apartments and was hoping for some feedback from those already there. I have a beagle, so I need a pet-friendly place.I'm specifically looking at Cedarfield, Foxridge, and Ridgewood Village. How long does it take from these complexes to the school? 5-10 min?

Also, I doubt anyone can answer this, but maybe! Cedarfield says dogs must be neutered and mine is not. Do you think they would be strict about this?

Thanks!

Hello to everyone. I have been lurking around SDN religiously for months now, however, this is my first time posting. I am a non-trad finishing my B.S. in Biomedical Sciences. Possibly pursuing Navy medicine through HPSP or post-residency depending on financial aid options.
During the last four years I have been researching medical schools near and far and VCOM is by far the best-fit school for me. I have fallen in love with the school and the locale and I am thrilled that I may have an opportunity to join you in the class of 2013!
My file is complete as of today and I should receive their decision about an interview within the next few weeks. I know it is late in the process but I remain hopeful. Best wishes and good luck to those of you awaiting interviews and acceptance notices. I hope to meet you all soon.
Also, thank you moderators and posters for the many excellent posts and answers to questions that many of us pre-meds share during this process. This site is a real blessing.

Books anyone? If anyone is looking to stock up on the majority of your MS-I & II required textbooks (and a lot of the books that you'll REALLY need) early and at a minimal cost -- I have more than 25 textbooks, board review, and question books that I'm looking to move. The books are in varying conditions but most could be rated good to excellent. These books cost several thousand dollars if bought individually over time (as I did) -- and money gets tight in med school, why not start out ahead of the game? With all you've got on your mind it's tough to have the foresight to appreciate this, I'm sure I would have passed if I were in your shoes, but think about it. Send me an e-mail if you're interested and we can talk specifics.

It's a little late in the game for any school, and it's literally too late for a lot of them.

A few weeks ago, we heard from admissions that they had about 50 seats left in the class, but they've gone through at least two round of interviews and acceptance calls since then. You could always call the admissions office and see if there is a point.

Sorry to be kind of a downer. :(

Who knows, though? It's never too late until it's over. :o

Is it too late to turn in my secondary for VCOM. I'm from California. What's my chances of getting an interview this late in the process?

The secondary application deadline is not until Mar. 16th so the answer is no as far as is it too late. For me, the most important part of this process was to remain optimistic. I interviewed on 1/27 and my interviewer told me that if the class is full, then it is possible to be offered a spot on the wait list or even a spot in next years entering class. It is just my opinion, but I believe that if you get everything in and contact the admissions office and express to them a solid reason why you got your application in Feb. as opposed to November (ex. I had a 22 on my first MCAT and took the January MCAT and scored a 30 so I really wanted to apply this cycle), then I believe they will at least review your app. for a potential interview. The admissions office is great at VCOM, give them a call and I am sure that they will be able to guide you in the right direction.

I just was wondering if anyone new what to do next as far as paperwork goes. I've sent in my deposit and don't know what to do next.

Next step (as far as I can tell): Go to www.vcom.vt.edu/2013 look on the left hand side of the page and open the precheck instructions pdf. Follow said directions, complete and pay for the background check. When the background check clears you will eventually hear from Admin. You will then be given a VCOM email address through which most contact will be made. If you have already done your taxes, get the FAFSA filled out and talk to financial aid.
Also, it is a good idea to make sure you get all your vaccinations updated and include any that VCOM specifically requires.
Have fun.

Hello fellow classmates! I cannot wait to meet everyone.

Does anyone know what the housing market is like in Blacksburg/Christiansburg??? I mean, is it important that I find something before summer starts, or will there be plenty of good housing available early to mid summer?

I'm from out of state and would like to see what I rent before I make a rental commitment, but don't know when I will be able to do that.

My interviews were like that too. All of my 3 interviewers felt like I had a handle on the academic requirements, so we talked about random things.

The first guy talked to me about gas prices and interstate routes from GA to VA.

The second lady and I talked about some ethical issues (which admittedly is more interview centric).

The last lady and I discussed...well...not much. It was very light and conversational.

I' sure it depends on the interviewer's style, but your case isn't odd to me. Good luck!

clownDOctor, a third year called me last week to welcome me to the school and I had asked her the same question because I too am out of state and concerned. She said that June would be a good time because a lot of the places clear out then... I'm sure sooner would work too but she said it is not a necessity to secure it immediately. Hope this helps.

Megan, in admissions, can put you on the listserv for housing opportunities.

That said, we have a fairly active housing thread in the FB group - VCOM Class of 2013. Check it out.

There are a lot of current VCOM students floating around SDN too, and they are all wonderful about giving advice on housing.

I found a lot of useful information about apartments on the VCOM thread under pre-osteopathic medicine. It was pretty deep into the thread, but I just searched for "housing" on each page until I found it. Sorry, I don't remember what page it was on.

But the best thing is probably emailing Megan, like has been said before. Or, of course, join the facebook group!!

Maybe someone can help.... my wife just got hired in Roanoke and we are coming down for accepted students day and hope to put a deposit on an apartment while we are there... my question is does anyone commute from the Roanoke area or does everyone live in Blacksburg/Christiansburg? Also, are there areas of Roanoke that are unsafe? Unfortunately I was unable to see that area during my interview visit. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I just recently sent in my final check and also emailed Megan. She said that we will get an email with directions about getting on the housing list and lots of other information when they receive the check. Good luck with finding a roommate!

Two or three of my classmates commuted from Roanoke/Salem every day for the first two years. I did the opposite for most of years 3 and 4. The drive can suck, but you get used to it. If you're looking for a place in the Roanoke area, I'd actually suggest living in Salem.

yup, i second psychbender! acutally, there is about 6 people that i know that commute from the salem/roanoke area. Its very doable...and yes, live in salem...close to school and cheaper in housing that roanoke itself...(btw, salem is only a couple of miles outside roanoke)

Hey all,

For anyone who is coming to the accepted students day this weekend : Mallory and I will be at the Starbucks on Friday at 5pm, if you all want to come hang out. We were planning on getting a group together and getting some dinner/exploring the area and whatnot. It would be a nice chance to meet everyone before the actual event!

Hope to see you all there! If anyone is planning on coming and would like my phone number so that you can find us, just PM me and I will try to get back to you ASAP.

Dont study before you get here just relax while you can. When you start really think about doing a medical mission trip they are sooo worth it. u r not required to purchase equipment. However, there will be a couple of companies that come by and offer their products at a reduced VCOM special rate ex: Welch Allyn company.

When you are practicing for your Physician-Patient clinical scenarios, the school has the equipment for you to practice with.

on a side note, we have a fuily functioning cafeteria with a coffee shop on the 2nd floor lounge. You guys are so lucky.

Unless you are HPSP, and thus getting reimbursed by the government, don't bother getting most supplies (besides a good stethoscope).

The vending machines aren't as good as when the ladies actually prepared over-priced food for the cafeteria. Ahh, memories...

Hi, I've been wondering a few more things about my next year at VCOM

1) Is the academic calendar posted somewhere? If not, does anyone have any idea of what it'll be like, or could post the past year's calendar?

2) If disimbursements come twice a year, can I decide how much to take out two different times-I really don't think I'll need 26,500$ for living expenses-really ten grand less seems more than enough for me, but it'd be nice to take out more than what I think I need first semester and then use that to judge how much to take out second semester.

3) How much time did you current VCOMers leave Blacksburg in a year?

1) http://www.vcom.vt.edu/curriculum/calendars.html

2) Yes, you can take out whatever you want!

3) Alot....u will have a lot of breaks in between blocks, and a good summer break between 1st and 2nd yr...after that, no breaks==> BOARDS! good luck next yr...u will enjoy it.

If you pay back "extra" money within 3 months of disbursements, you have no penalty, no interest, nothing. Paying back is super easy - take a check to the financial aid department. That's it. So, what I did is take out the max, then figured out how much I would actually need, then paid back the excess after 2 and a half months. I'm officially $10k less in debt than some people :)

I know most of you all already have had housing, but just in case, and for those coming off the waitlist, I have a room for rent in a beautiful townhome on Sheliah Court in Knollwood Commons - walking distance, just 0.3 miles from VCOM, lots of fellow classmates nearby.
Hardwood floors on main level, tile bathrooms, and laundry room with washer/dryer included. Access to Knollwood amenities, pool, workout room. Gas heat, central air, all appliances. $650/month + 1/2 utilities. I'll be a 2nd-year-to-be and have a sweet 4 yo Siberian husky - sorry, but the landlord has set the limit at 1 pet. If interested, PM me.

Hey future 1st years... Today was our last day of class and we are now graduating to the 2nd year class :) It's so exciting. Time has flown! Anyway, I just wanted to give you a heads up on an update from the dean today. Apparently, we are going to be moving to an integrated testing schedule. So every other Monday we're going to have a single integrated test (anat, phys, pharm, path, etc) instead of having tests spread out through the week! It sounds pretty good because hopefully this will allow us to get out earlier in the year and have more time to prep for boards. Also, we'll be building up our stamina for 4-5+ hour tests. Overall it was a great meeting and it really seems like a lot of the bugs in our curriculum are being worked on actively. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

So I already posted this on the pre-DO site just wanting some feedback from some current students....

I am getting married Dec. 19 which is right during finals of block 2 this year. I emailed Dr. Brian Hill who said I could possibly take exams early, but wasn't really clear...

Just curious if anyone has had to take exams early or late at VCOM b/c of other events and if they were easy to work with.

Also, i was accepted Dec 08 and called as soon as I was accepted to make sure this wedding date would be fine and if not if VCOM would work with me and they said yes so that is why we chose this date...

Really? Do classes ever have assigned readings or anything like that which would make the book necessary?

No. Don't buy the books, unless you get them reimbursed (military). BRS, Baby Robbins (+/- Goljan Rapid Review), and a random pharm text will get you through the first two years just fine.

how did you study in undergrad? did you not use books then either. I am just trying to determine if the books are really just not necessary/useful, or if it depends more on the type of studier that you are?
I am sure it has at least a little to do with the latter, but I would love opinions!

Well, I'm in your boat, but the reason I'm not buying them all is precisely because of my study habits and such. I NEVER opened a single textbook in college, but I wasted a ton of money on them. I used PPT, class notes and the internet to study.

Dont take any of our (upper classmen) opinions as gospel guys. Im in the class of 2012 and I dont think we were even assigned some of the books that are listed above. So how would we know whether or not they are helpful?

With that said- I agree you probably do not need to buy any of them haha. Robbins is accessible through the library so you can read you can get it that way. Other than that I would consider getting Moore for anatomy, and possibly the Rohen book to help for practicals. I also liked to read the intro and summary of the chapters in the biochem book- but I dont think it is worth it to buy it just for that.
