I am still fairly clueless when it comes to what residencies and the amount of research one needs to have in order to be competitive.

I currently have one first-authored abstract, one second-authored abstract, and later this year I should be second author on a paper.

To be honest, I am a little concerned that I won't have a first authored paper. Any thoughts on this? Will the amount of research I have make me competitive from a research standpoint?

Research is only a small part of the grand scheme, and it depends on where you are looking to train for residency. If you want a position at one of the research heavy programs, your concerns about research may or may not be valid. However, for the majority of programs, a dedication and excitement for the research you are doing, regardless of first-authorship, should be enough. I know a few past students who did not have first-author publications that matched extremely well (ophtho times top 10).
