woo whooooooooooo go western!

Wooot!! class of 2013! I can say with almost certainty that I will be in this class at Western! I can't say definitely yet but it looks like it'll be that way inevitably.

I still haven't received the actual letter though but this is because of me moving the last two weeks and mails being forwarded, etc...so that letter is floating around somewhere. If I dont' receive it by the end of this week, do you think I should call Natalie again and ask them to send it again?

yea zeta? I definitely wouldn't mind seeing a familiar face at Western! :D

What percentage of certainty is everyone about Western being their medical school by next year? I am about 94.32% sure, and after November I might be 100%. haha

As much as I love western, i probably won't end up there next year . There are other schools in similar locations that I have enjoyed just as much as I did western that will be about 25K dollars cheaper per year........if i do get accepted to any of those schools i think it would be pretty crazy to turn it down. But if that does happen, I will live vicariously through you all via this thread and facebook group...haha.

Even if I dont get accepted anywhere else, I will have a tough decision with Western, DMU, and Loyola.

That's a bummer :(

Then again, I don't know what's going to happen in the next few months for me either. I could still end up changing my mind. For now I can rest happy with the COMP crowd.

not entirely committed, but i'm definitely leaning there... i work at the ucla westwood ER now and i saw a westernu 4th year doing rotations there...i guess that shows that this school has everything i'm looking for.. sunny socal, reputation with some of the best schools especially in CA, and most of all, friendly, welcoming students and faculty.. only downside for me, as w/ yo,u ryserr is the $$$... if i get into utah i can easily save 80,000...we'll c how it goes.. congrats on loyola btw!!

i know that COMP has very high first time pass rates for the boards...but how are the overall scores? average? above average? i realize that scores are highly individual, but i read over on azcom's thread that they also have very high first time pass rates but pretty average scores.

can any current students comment on the actual board prep at western?

they said at the interview that about 60% of comp students took the usmle...any idea how successful usmle test takers were?

I don't know the details but apparently Western scored the highest on the COMLEX Level 2 clinical portion - http://www.westernu.edu/bin/admissions/COMLEXrelease.pdf .

I believe the Dean said at the beginning of the year that we were 4th overall on COMLEX I out of the 25 or so osteopathic schools, but don't quote me on that. 1st on COMLEX II, as you guys already mentioned.

And, so you guys know, the difference between #1 and #4 is like 1% (98% vs 97% pass rate or something like that).

Don't get hung up on average board scores. Some people will do awesome, so will not. It depends on how YOU prepare. Western definitely gives you all the resources you need to succeed.

I completely agree that scores are individual...I have been looking for a concrete way to compare some schools. Anyway, I am very confident that Western prepares its students for boards/rotations and on to residency.

Congrats all those who have been accepted and good luck for those waiting to hear back/interview. I am an OMS-I (osteopathic medical student- 1st year) here at COMP and I LOVE it! For those that are going back and forth on which school to chose, if you chose Western you will not be disappointed. While it lacks some of the advantages of a major MD school (ie, teaching hospital), I feel that my education is comprehensive and complete. If you have ANY questions about the school, how to prepare once you have been accepted, the area (don't live in pomona.. its scary!), or anything else, please let me know. I will answer honestly and candidly. Once again, congrats and good luck.

Oh, and for those on the waitlist I understand the angst. I was waitlisted (I interviewed REALLY late in the cycle) but still got in. Once your here it doesn't matter what your MCAT or GPA were, or what school you attended.

Hi Class of 2013,
Congratulations on getting into Western and planning to coming here. You will all love it here.

If any of you needs a place to stay in the summer, I'm renting out a room in a big house in Claremont. It's part of a residential community so very safe and quiet. You will have your own huge room and a bathroom to share with my roommate. However, he'll probably wont be around so the place is basically yours. The room is available from June 17-Aug 7, 2009 but exact date is flexible. It's furnished with bed and desk. Kitchen is huge and available for use as long as you keep it clean. Laundry machines are provided free of charge. Rent include gas, water, electricity, garbage, and internet. No cable hook up but antenna TV is available for use. 1 parking spot available. Great for students taking classes in the summer. Just 1 block from the Claremont Colleges (Pomona, Harvey Mudd, etc). 6 miles from Western University of Health Sciences. Location is very convenient. Vons, round table, baskin-robbins, and Mexican restaurant are just across the street. Claremont downtown is just few blocks away. Students and people that are neat and clean preferred. If you're interested, please contact me through facebook, email me at uyxela@gmail.com or call at 650-307-7252. Click here for pictures: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2145291&id=11704806
Thanks!!

Hey Guys,

I'm not posting this on the facebook page because facebook kind of skeeves me out. That and I'm afraid of being bombarded with housing info (i.e. "GREAT APARTMENT, CLOSE TO SHOPS & EASY COMMUTE! CALL (555) 555-5555) by any rando who reads my post. I'm just not down with that.

So anyway, here we go:

Like most of us, I'll be moving to Pomona from out of state and would like to make the process as stress-free as possible. So, for those of you who are familiar with local housing, can you give some recommendations? For example, do you know of any low rent/high quality apartmentment complexes near school? How about good landlords/realtors? Any places to absolutely steer clear of?

If you've already moved, where are you living and how do you like it? Feel free to comment on overall feel, good/bad neighborhoods, commute time, etc.
Any other pertinent info would be appreciated, too.

Spanks.

Recommendations
#1: Don't live near the campus (sorry Natalie) it's kind of ghetto, chino hills is pretty nice and only a few minutes away. Fullerton/Brea is good living with a good night life (not that you'll have much time for this).
#2 Don't live near the campus....yep important enough to recommend twice.

You and me both.

So, thanks for the tip(s). I keep hearing good things about Claremont and La Verne (but mostly Claremont). I'm leaning towards those areas because I really like the idea of being so close to the mountains. Anybody know what Upland is like? Also, I've heard that San Dimas sucks.

While we're talking about these different areas, can anybody recommend some good gyms? I did a little googling and it looks like there's a ton of fitness clubs, but for some reason most of them don't have webpages (sketchy?). So yeah, I'm particularly interested in boxing gyms and/or facilities with quality free weights and plates. I care much less about whether or not there's spa services or saunas and whatnot.

Opinions?

My husband is finishing up his first year and is wanting to rent out his room for ISAC. He did ISAC last summer and thought it really helped the transition to first semester to have a lot of the anatomy out of the way.

Anyway, it is a little less than half a mile to school - he walks often. A private large bedroom with attached private bathroom in the historic neighborhood close to the school. Very nice landlady(and neighbors), kitchen and laundry privileges. $630 /month prorated. He will be coming back home to Oregon for the summer vacation.

A nice place to land and look for more permanent housing. PM me for more info.

Hello All:)

I am currently living in a very nice, sweet house in Upland, CA (10-15 mins from Western Univ main campus in Pomona). The rent is very affordable and a great deal and the house is in a very safe and beautiful area. 3 bedroom house and the other 2 girls are from DO 2010 class (4th yr DO students) and I am thinking of moving out and need a replacement for this upcoming academic year (starting in August).
