Looking at starting residency in 2003. Everywhere I have applied, I apply to both AP/CP but I am starting to lean towards just doing CP/Hematopath. Wanted to know what the job market for Hematopath in comparison to general path? Also can you change form AP/CP to just CP during residency or do you have start with only CP in mind.

Heme path is in demand, it is likely the 2nd most in demand subspecialty behind Derm. Cyto is close too. But, if you do only CP you will likely limit your choices of jobs. Most private practice groups want AP/CP. You would have to have a position where the hemepath is big enough to have a dedicated specialist.

Whether or not your program will allow you to change from AP/CP to CP only will depend on the individual program. They will not like it for sure, but will probably allow it. They rely on having full classes to cover services. Your fellow residents may not like it either. It will mean more AP call and possibly more gross room duty. Don't forget that sure we are learning alot during residency but we are also cheap labor for certain services.
