Berry, Moran, Discuss Support for DMEPOS Exemption
On Jan. 22, NCPA held a media conference call with Reps. Marion Berry (D-Ark.), and Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) who introduced H.R. 616. They were joined on the call by NCPA Executive Vice President and CEO Bruce Roberts, Mark Riley (executive director of the Arkansas Pharmacists Association), and Mike Larkin (executive director of the Kansas Pharmacists Association). The bill exempts pharmacists from The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ accreditation rule for Medicare Part B supplies Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics and Supplies (DMEPOS), as it does with 17 other medical professional groups such as physicians.
The current requirement is time consuming, costly, and redundant, because pharmacists are already subject to regulation and oversight as state-licensed medical professionals and businesses. H.R. 616 preserves community pharmacy patient access to these valuable DMEPOS services and products.
