One of the "perks" of Ophthalmology, in my opinion, is the great opportunity to do some awesome volunteer work in third world countries. What interests me the most is doing cataract surgery in Africa, which I for sure will do if I am lucky enough to get a residency spot in a few years (I'm an MS1).

Here is my question. Would residencies look upon it favorably if you went over to Africa with an Ophthalmologist (I would ideally go on a one week or 10 day trip over christmas break or something) before your residency?

Like I said, Africa trips are something I will do one day. I just would rather do them when I can do the surgeries, instead of when I am just filling out paperwork (something anybody can do). To be honest, I have already made up my mind (95% sure) that I am not going to Africa until I am a resident, when I can actually do something related to Ophthalmology.

Did anybody on this board that has matched go on a trip like this before residency, and have it greatly affect your residency application?

I say go to Africa if you have the opportunity. It will likely help your application, help you make contacts, see how things can be done differently.

I wouldn't pass up the opportunity. You will do more than just filling out paperwork. Depends on what you know and how much initiative you have.

If you haven't already learned to conduct preliminary eye exams, I'm sure you can be trained to participate in parts of the eye exam. It would be a terrific experience as a medical student to hone your skills and help out on a volunteer trip, definitely a bonus to be able to put it on your ophtho apps.
'Unite For Sight' is a great organization where you can volunteer to help provide eye care to individuals in developing nations, including Africa.
