Hi everyone

I seriosuly SERIOUSLY screwed up this semester. I am pretty smart and having been getting awesome grades all my life. I was really depressed this semester and i just couldnt bring myself to do anything, icnluding studying. I am at my freshman year in the general science program. I ended up failing organic chem, a D in phys and a C in bio.:(
I have nooo idea what to do now. I have always wanted to get into med school and i see that this is a long shot now. Is it still possible or should I move on to something else?
I know I can g et a 4.0 gPa if i try. but because i screwed up so much already I dont know if its even worth trying.

I want the truth please... no nice "anything is possible stuff" :)

Thank you

when you say all your life, you really have to realize that you are young, and it is still a while to go until your medical profession (a career that you will practice for probably 2-3x longer than the amount of time you have lived so far).

you need to ease up the course load. relax, get settled into college, and fix your health issues.

if you have to take a year off to work in the real world. it will straighten you out.

remember that if you want to work for 40 years in the field of your choosing, spending one year to redirect you in the right way is well worth it

So, what is your overall GPA for both semesters this year? Include any college courses you mght have taken while in high school.

1st. if this is what you want to do, do not give up hope. you still have md/do options. if you want it and you are willing to put in the work, you will get it. however, you have to address your own health first before you work on other's.

2nd. is that 2.1 from the fall semester? did you mess up that semester or this one? did you get your spring final grades yet? will your grades go down?

Ask yourself one and only one question: What is your mission?

If your answer is "to become a doctor," then use that as your motivation to get back on your feet. When I entered college, I got a 3.7 (with AP classes) and got a 1100 on my SAT. Not the best stats as an incoming freshman, but I asked myself this very same question and looked how things turn out. Dig deep down and find that motivation to lift yourself up.

I'm kinda in the same boat as you are. I had a 2.3 and it took me 4 years too get 8 hours. I was mad at myself for being goofy about things. I would get depressed because I was broke and other factors. That I lost complete motivation. Remember I did this for 4 years and until I finished my last final today I had a 2.33. I was scared that I couldn't hack it in school and I wasn't going get the opportunity to become a doctor like I had dreamed. After today I had 6 A's this semester which sky rocketed my GPA to a 3.44. I feel great now about myself and school, and am ready to pursue this dream. Once you find yourself in the rubble that is life you will come out ok. Everyone here is trying to reach the same goal you are and we will give support and they will give you guidance (Cuz their guiding me too) to help get you through. Good Luck!!!

i have seen this done with lower GPA than yours.

okay first thing
you need to make sure you are fine - physically and mentally. it will be challenging but definitely doable. you may find it helpful to consult the appropriate person and your support system.

then, you need to decide about continuing w/ school. if you are ready in all aspects, and you know you can handle it, go for it. if not, taking a semester or two is absolutely fine and encouraged. medical schools love to see problems resolved and subsequent upward trend in grades. if you take time off, try to shadow and volunteer at a hospital while WORKING a shift or two. Paying bills is really difficult and if you enjoy your shadowing/hospital experiences, you will get to see whether or not you really want to be a doctor. you may add this to your application when the time comes.

when you get back to school (and find that you are interested in medicine)
you may want to start by retaking 1 or 2 of those classes along with other courses you are interested in or you can do well on to boost your confidence.

i would suggest taking chem 1 and maybe bio + other classes to start off. MD schools will want to see that you can handle these classes (retake anything below C) and DO schools will replace your old grades with new - it will benefit you regardless.

once you hit stride, keep trucking. i would not pick up ECs in my first semester back.

do well on the MCAT and it's all good

good luck and be confident

I think it's very possible; you've got a few years ahead of you and haven't screwed up too many credits yet. Slow down on the course work, plan on 4 more years to graduate, and don't get anything lower than an A-.

my boyfriend completely screwed up his freshman year. had a gpa of like 2.0 or something. in the rest of his undergrad years he was making 3.5+ and acing upper level science courses. finished with like a 3.4 and is at a med school...you can do it too!
