I have no clue actually- the email specifically said that I had been accepted/waitlisted at a school that participates in the AAMC certipho background check program. I haven't been accepted by any other AMCAS schools because I withdrew from all of them except 2, which I'm waiting to hear post interview from both. So I have no idea if they have to request for your consent every time a new school accepts/waitlists you or if they do it just the first time.

I'm pretty sure you only get that email once.

Awe, sorry orderandchaos, but it's not over yet. Hope you get good news, sunrike. Wondering who you guys are, I met a lot of cool people that day. Where did you guys go to undergrad, if you don't mind? Or PM me if you want to be anonymous.

I was the token Dartmouth undergrad / non science major / oldest person in our interview group. And yes, lots of awesome people in that group.

Amusingly enough, I have received mail from Dartmouth every single day since last Monday. None from DMS, of course - alumni office, outing club, people wanting money, undergrad admissions, etc. I've been having mini heart attacks each time I go out to the mailbox. Someone over there must be toying with me.

Congrats as well.

Another Feb 18th crew.

Hope I get a snail mail as well. No decision made yet.

I love you Dartmouth. Please pick me.

My acceptance came in one small envelope. It was slightly thick, but thin enough that I expected it to be a waitlist/rejection. So maybe your letter is an acceptance :xf:

Another March 9er here. I love trying to place (mostly) anonymous SDN users to the people I met at the interview. I wonder who you two were... :p

Anyways, I'm also anxiously awaiting a letter, which I guess is an actual letter and not an email like I was hoping. I'm glad I haven't had to wait as long as you all. But we should all hear soon... right?

And since its nearly my people's heritage day, here's to a bearable wait :luck:

Also, does anyone know if they have sent out POST-interview rejections yet?

Thanks

I think it's good news, but not necessarily. I figure we probably fit into one of two groups.

A) Between waitlist and acceptance.
B) Between waitlist and rejection.

I've heard of a few getting waitlisted post interview, but I can't recall any rejections.

I just hope we're in group A.

Yes, group A would be awesome.

I called the admissions office a few days ago and futilely tried to get some information out of them. They were vague about when the remaining decisions are going out and by what date everyone would get a decision. They did tell me that the committee is now meeting once a week. It would seem their interviews are ending this week. What that all sums to I am not exactly sure.

Anyone else have any useful information?

Yes please post if you hear any info! That's too bad they were vague, I am guessing they don't know how long it will take for final decisions to be made once the last interview day is done. I wonder how many more weekly committee meetings there are, probably 1 or 2 left. We'll probably all know our fates here by end of March latest? :xf::luck:

Maybe some of the 3/18 interviewers can ask: "around when can we expect a decision?" and by that date I'm assuming we'd all know, since they are the last interview day.

I guess I am also wondering how many people they have accepted already. That would be interesting to know. Also, I wonder how many applicants they will "overaccept" for a class of 90.

When I called the admissions office it was unclear if we were getting our decisions back by the end of March. I think they are being ambiguous on purpose. However one thing they were rather clear about was that rejections and waitlistings are sent out via email and acceptances are sent out via snail-mail. I assume that won't change.

I thought medical schools were required to inform you of their decision by the end of March if they have already interviewed you--I haven't been able to find this information on the AMCAS or AAMC website, but I've seen people mention it in other forums?

I was thinking the same thing. It may very well be true. If that is the case, we will hear in the next week or so. I think the admissions office is vague because they don't want to promise anything they can't follow up on.

Hopefully this is all worth the agonizing wait.

I had never heard of this policy (requirement to inform post-interview decisions by end of March), but I searched and found it on the AAMC site:
http://www.aamc.org/students/applying/policies/admissionofficers.htm

"By March 30 of the matriculation year, March 15 for MD-PhD programs, each school or program have issued a number of offers of acceptance at least equal to the expected number of students in its first-year entering class and have reported those acceptance actions to the AAMC Section for Medical School Application Services."

Batting average is currently at ~750.

Cool. Thanks for the info yallayafa. I had thought the ADCOM met on Thursdays! Did you actually hear April 8th or are you extrapolating based upon how long it may take mail to reach people on the west coast? Do they send out snail-mail to those accepted THE DAY the committee meets (I wonder)?

So the Batting average average is about 750 eh? Wish I knew about the cuttoffs.

Would love to as well but I highly doubt they will tell you. If they do, everyone will try to normalize their stats to yours and come up with their own average and then perhaps be mislead if they receive an unfavorable decision. Thus, Dartmouth most likely will avoid all of this and having to justify themselves by not releasing the information. I may be wrong but I would be very surprised if they gave that information out.

Do you guys know how the batting average is calculated? Like is it based mainly on stats, or do interview, recs, activities, etc. play a big role as well? would be very interesting to know how it actually works, and if it's a batting average, then what's the point of voting? I was under the impression that the batting average was calculated from how many people voted for you on the admission committee..,

On my interview day, the process by which the admissions committee arrives at an applicant's score was described as something so complicated/unique that you have to experience it a couple times to have any understanding of it. The three people who read your application pre-interview plus the two interviewers obviously have input in the process; I have no idea about everyone else.

Knowing your number wouldn't matter anyway. You would need a lot more information that you are even less likely to get for the number to mean anything ;)

Good point! Given that, unless you get all that information it would be rather stressful to receive a number because then we would all wonder "what does it mean?!"

It is a little more certain when one receives an objective decision :)

Match day was Thursday. The class I started med school with matched (sad/happy for me, happy for them). Most people were very happy with their matches and, as always, the list was very impressive.

If no one else posts the match list over the next couple of days, I'll sanitize (take the names off the list) and post it. If you're interested in a specific specialty now, let me know and I'll tell you where people ended up in that specialty.

I went to revisit. It is a (very fun) infomercial for Dartmouth. There are a lot of good speakers and events. The first year med students traditionally throw a party for the prospies, so you get to meet a bunch of med students. I would definitely suggest that people go.

For rental info go here (http://www.dartmouthre.com/).

I haven't been on here for a while, so I thought I would check in. I am very excited about revisit!!! Are there any other MD-PhD people that are planning to come early for revisit? Or MD people that want to come a few days early and spend some time exploring the area? I am coming from the west coast, so it makes sense for me to stay for a few days. I would love to find another prospy to spend time with, especially if you'd be interested in going on a hike or sharing a rental car to drive around Lebanon/Hanover :)

Let me know! I am excited to meet everyone who will be there for revisit!! And good luck to those still waiting :luck:

Wait listed yesterday as well. Anyone know about how many are wait listed? And historically there have been ~1/4 of the class off the wait list, so like ~20 or so may potentially get an acceptance?

LIDO
03-27-2010, 09:56 PM
I have heard that Dartmouth is a wait list heavy school. It is correct that some years almost 1/4 of the class has been pulled from the wait list.

Now you must realized that not every person they call (from the wait list) will not accept the spot.

So, if they have 20 open spots, I would assume that they call anywhere from 25-35 people.....

That is my assumption....don't take it for a fact....but it makes sense....I think.

I don't mean to pry into very personal information, but was their offer generous? Also, if you have only 14 days to accept/decline, can you still go about haggling for a better fin aid package, even if let's say you have yet to receive your fin aid packages from other schools?

I was complete the first week of March - I'll PM you about the rest.

So I'm in an interesting position. I interviewed on Feb 23rd and currently haven't heard anything from DMS. I know one person from my interview date who was waitlisted and there were also students that interviewed before my date that have posted here being rejected or waitlisted.
Is it possible that my file still hasn't been discussed by the committee, or am I somehow stuck in limbo?

If you're already accepted and you said that you would satisfy the pre-reqs before med school, as long as you actually take those pre-reqs you'll be fine. One thing to consider, however, is that you will need to be in Hanover by the first or second week in August, so I'm not sure you'd actually have time to take a calc class before starting.

If you're really worried, you could call and pretend you're a prospective student applying for the next cyle and ask the question.

PedsDoc14
04-07-2010, 02:58 PM
I would call, the secondary states that you simply have to take the pre-reqs prior to matriculation so you have time. If you took AP, then you're OK according to the secondary. If you didn't and its just the stats classes, I would call and find out if you could get a waiver or find out what your options for taking a calc. class are that they will accept (summer school, comm. coll., online course). They wouldn't be able to rescind the offer for asking what your options are, they would be able to if by the first day of classes you don't have a pre-req complete.

I know that you must finish the pre-reqs before matriculating. I'm not sure, however, whether a D or F in a class that is not a pre-req would affect you acceptance. Do the acceptance letters say anything about that?

If you're worried, you may want to give the admissions office a call. They are the best source of information. The simplest solution is just not to get any Ds or Fs :p I mean, if you're doing that badly in a class (that isn't needed to graduate or is a pre-req for med school), why not just withdraw?

Hi,
So almost everyone in the MD/PhD program started in the program. Occasionally, however, people are accepted from within Dartmouth (med or grad school). You still need to go through the application process as an internal candidate. I know several people who have applied in the last few years as internal candidates and I only know of one who was accepted so it is by no means a sure thing. Still, it's worth a shot.

I see your background is engineering, so something that may be easier to get into than the MD/PhD program (if that doesn't work out) is the joint MD/MS with the engineering school.

I'm glad ruraldr posted that link. One thing to be aware of, however, is that if you come to Dartmouth you NEED to have a car. Being on the AT line is great (free public transportation). The problem is that most of the busses only run from about ~6 or 6:30 am until 7 pm. There will be rotations when you need to be at the hospital earlier than that and many nights you'll want to be in the library later than that. Also, the shuttles don't operate on the weekend. And, your On Doctoring could be 50 miles away (like mine was). So, it's great to live close to the AT but it cannot be your only means of transportation.

I think the lack of a MSTP grant does give us some more flexibility (we also take internationals). Although, we just applied for a MSTP grant and were told that even if we were to get the MSTP we would still allow people to do the PhD in what they want since the MSTP grant only funds a small portion of the spots in almost any program.

For 1st year you can request to have On Doc at DHMC or the VA (busses go there too). It's possible, but not ideal to not have a car in first year. There were a couple of people in my class who did not have cars in 1st year and they were ok. Honestly, though, if you're not going to have a car you really want to live in Hanover so that you have easier access to Dartmouth.

Hi Naijaba,

I found Dartmouth's financial aid to be very generous (better even than my state school) but am unsure of the break down of need based vs. non-need based. If you haven't gotten your financial aid from them, or have and don't feel that it measures up I know they are willing to take calls/discuss your situation with you.

Best of luck with your decision!

Personally, I love living here (better than Ottawa or SF Bay Area, not quite as good as Portland, OR). Winter = skiing (Dartmouth owns a skiway that's not too far from campus and good (for east coast) skiing is about 30-45 min away in Vermont). Skating on the pond is fun (a lot of pickup hockey games). IM sports.

Summer = hiking, kayaking, etc.

Because Dartmouth is here, there are lots of speakers, shows, events around campus. I actually spend a decent amount of time in the jewelry studio. There are a few bars around campus. Honestly, I'm not often bored.

I agree with physicsnerd42--its a nice place to be able to live. Friendly people, not a ton of traffic so I don't waste time traveling. I have a dog and it's been nice for him to be out of the city. Great walking trails/lake/river access and more great talks/shows on campus then I actually have time to attend.

Having moved here from a city the things I miss most are:

1) easily getting to see big name music shows--can do it, but means I have to travel down to Boston or up to Montreal.

2) great food. There are fun restaurants but not the breadth you would find in a city.

With that said--I feel like it's been worth giving up having those things on an everyday basis for the benefits of the school, my classmates and the beautiful surroundings.

I liked the small size of the school/stories of friendly/helpful faculty and teaching focused attendings at the hospital.

I was excited to be near great outdoors opportunities and in a place that would be comfortable/easy to live as a student and on a student budget.

The financial aid package was solid and coming to Dartmouth moved me to the same coast as my family.

My favorite things as a current student have been how bright, motivated and involved my fellow students are and how available my teachers have been.

I feel like anything I ask to do I get the answer "yes" (from faculty spending one on one time with me in the anatomy lab to review dissections that were confusing to physicians at the hospital letting me shadow them/watch surgeries etc.)

I love that the deans know me by name and send me opportunities that they think I'll be interested on based on knowing me.

It has been a busy but happy year. :)

If you have updated the school with all new and relevant information, then you need to sit tight and cross your fingers.

The director of admissions stated that and sort of LOI is not helpful. Your "batting average" has already been determined. The only thing that can help is a substantial update (publications, grades).

Good luck.

Dear Members of the Dartmouth Community,

Today we are announcing the creation of The Dartmouth Center for Health Care Delivery Science, supported by a spectacular commitment of $35 million from an anonymous donor. The donor believes that Dartmouth is uniquely positioned to lead the advancement of this critical field. More about this new enterprise is included in the following press release (http://www.dartmouth.edu/~news/releases/2010/05/17.html) and at TDC.dartmouth.edu (http://TDC.dartmouth.edu).

Provost Carol Folt and I expect we will identify other major initiatives that draw upon Dartmouth's unique strengths as the strategic planning process continues.

This is an exciting moment for Dartmouth. This gift recognizes the excellent work of our faculty and the collaborative strength of this academic community. The gift also expresses the will of a generous donor to help us tackle one of the most challenging issues of our time.

Sincerely,
Jim Yong Kim

That is very exciting. I went to second look and was blown away by Dr. Kim's speech.

Physicsnerd, I am regular MD but would like to do research (maybe even basic science). Should I be contacting lab PIs or is there an easy way to look for opportunities? Do many MD students do research in the first year or the first summer? Now that I have decided on DMS I want to get the ball rolling on this. Thanks!

Lots of people do significant amounts of research during med school. A list of PIs willing to take med students for the summer between years 1 and 2 of med school is typically compiled about halfway through year 1. This list, however, is typically incomplete (there are many more investigators willing to take students than are lister). I would recommend that you start looking at the research that different people do and make a list of people whose research interests you. Then, run that list by one of the older MD/PhD students ;) Once you get feedback about the list, just e-mail the PIs who get the thumbs up. Most investigators would be happy to at least meet with an interested in med student. There is typically also funding available to help fund med student research for a summer.

Hi CosMd,

As someone already mentioned, classes do typically start at 8am each day (with a few scattered instances of a 10am start instead).

Our class (M1) lives in a variety of locations--including North Park, Sachem Village (another graduate student housing location), and in apartments/houses/condos etc. in Lebanon, West Lebanon, Norwich and Hanover.

Hi, I'm new to NH, but I'm really excited about staring a new school year at Dartmouth. I was wondering, if I'm getting a car, what can I expect the average miles per year to be for the average DMS student? Is it worth it to buy a car? Or can I get by borrowing or renting a car? If I were to rent, what options are there?

And like most students, I've built up quite a bit of debt. Are there any jobs on campus that can help generate some cash flow? Apparently DMS students cant apply for Graduate Resident Advisor positions...

You pretty much need to buy a car. Trust me. My on doctoring for the first two years alone was a 100 mile round trip every two weeks. If you want to buy anything other than groceries, you need to go to at least West Lebanon (10 min drive). While there are free busses in the area, the only start running at about 6 or 6:30 am (makes it tough to get to the hospital to pre-round on patients at 5), only run until about 7 and don't run on weekends. You might be able to request On Doctoring at DHMC and just live in hanover, but you'll need a car if you're at DHMC for rotations in years 3 and 4, especially if you don't want to walk to the hospital at 5 am when it's 10 degrees outside and snowing. Best bet: buy a used Subaru Outback. I guess you could also try the Zip Car thing I see around here now.

There aren't really too many campus jobs. You can maybe make some money doing research for a summer, but probably not more than $10-15/hour. I am a graduate advisor, but you can't apply because medical and business school students (other than MD/PhD) can't have the job (and the job might be phased out in a year anyway due to budget cuts).

I too have a car (got it as part of the transition to medical school, didn't own one before)--but do have a couple of classmates that don't. They do their on-doc work at DHMC and bum rides from others to get groceries, etc. Most of us have cars and I believe all of us will need cars by 3rd year.

I would focus on your school work over a job (esp. at first to make sure that you have plenty of time to study/pass. I'd work with the financial aid folks to come up with a plan of how to live over the next year balancing your current debt and med school needs (they are really nice and would be probably willing to sit down with you and walk through a plan). I'm not aware of any classmates that have a substantial job--although a few coach locally and get paid for that, do small research gigs, etc. In 2nd year there are tutoring opportunities that are paid.

The On Doctoring class (where you learn how to do physical exams, histories, etc.) starts in the first week. You do your first preceptor visit at the clinical site during the 4th (I believe) week.

Not really. It's a big parking lot. The later you get there, the longer it will take to walk to class, but the Dewey lot doesn't really get totally full.

Yes. The only taxes are the room and meals tax (hotel rooms and prepared food) and property. There are fees (like to register your car every year). But cell phone plans should not be taxed under the room and meals tax.

Don't bother buying an Otoscope or Ophthalmoscope. Those instruments will be hanging on the wall of any exam room you go into (and cost way too much). Reflex hammers will also be in the room, but they're cheap, so why not? I'm not sure what else they want you to get...

You get rejected from the waitlist when the school year starts and the class is full. Other than that? I guess if they found out you lied about something on your app they would reject you. Otherwise, you're pretty much on the waitlist until you get accepted or classes start.

Specialties are pretty terrible for On Doc. You're supposed to learn how to do a physical exam and history taking skills. You won't routinely practice those in a cards clinic.

I have little interest in family med as a specialty, but I got to practice all of those skills and saw adults and children. I think it's a terrible idea to request something like cards for On Doc even if you think you want to be a cardiologist. If you end up at a specialty clinic, make the best of it. I, however, was very happy with On Doc experience in family med.

Hi futuremdtobe,

I suggest asking your question on the 2014 facebook page as well (I know other Dartmouth folks check there and might have suggestions). Some of our class took a trip down to Ikea near the start of school to get furniture. Others rented a moving van and went to a local good-will type shop called "the listen center" that is in the upper valley--I made use of Craig's list.

BJ's--the local equivalent of a "Costco" might have some sort of flat pack furniture--not really sure...

BRS Physiology (http://www.amazon.com/Physiology-Board-Review-Linda-Costanzo/dp/0781798760/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1279717775&sr=1-1)
BRS Pathology (http://www.amazon.com/Pathology-North-American-Board-Review/dp/0781779413/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1279717802&sr=1-1)
First Aid for the USMLE Step I (http://www.amazon.com/First-Aid-USMLE-Step-2010/dp/0071633405/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1279717838&sr=1-1)

Thanks! The class websites aren't up yet, so I'll most likely wait until classes start before I get the books.

I would seriously recommend not buying the "required" books.

I'm not sure of the exact date--but know that we didn't learn ours until after classes had started (I would guess you'll know by the end of August).

Bank of America. One in Hanover and one in the hospital (very convenient).

Hi everybody!

Does anyone remember the name of this very very pleasant lady, with brown hair, that gives the introduction speech to all interviewees?

I can't seem to remember...I think her first/last name has Bull or something. A little help is much appreciated!
