View Full Version : 2009-2010 Ohio State Application Thread
firewall62 10-20-2009, 09:58 AM I never received a call from Dean Capers! I applied last year and my matriculation was deferred to this year. However, I did receive a call from a sweet lady at the admissions office informing me of my acceptance. She was so excited to tell me the good news that I knew I was accepted by the tone of her voice when she introduced herself :).
Did you apply for the deferrment? If I'm accepted, I might want to defer for a year, and I'm wondering how OSU handles requests for deferment. I know that some schools are rather strict, whereas other schools automatically allow you to defer.

linkin06 10-20-2009, 03:13 PM Anybody interviewing Monday and want to split a cab to the airport? PM me or reply in thread.
i will be interviewing monday, but i'm not sure if i'll be splitting a cab or not. may grab dinner w/ a friend on campus and bum a ride.
bobsmith 10-20-2009, 03:14 PM Anybody interviewing Monday and want to split a cab to the airport? PM me or reply in thread.
If you're talking about getting to the airport from the school, the admissions staff there was pretty helpful in organizing rides for people to get to the airport after the interview day was over.
In fact, I think the first things they asked me when I showed up were 1) what's your name 2) did you bring your picture and 3) when's your flight out/do you have a ride to the airport
JJMrK 10-20-2009, 03:23 PM Cool, thanks guys.
rockaction 10-20-2009, 04:11 PM Got my call from Dean Capers today. What a guy.

Damn! He is a stand-up guy. Genuinely interested in his applicants.
tommy55 10-22-2009, 06:29 AM Hi everyone! I've been lurking on here for a while. A quick question: if I have received an interview in the ohio area, could I ask Ohio State to find out the decision so I wouldn't have to fly back twice. Would Ohio State let me know my decision or do they not really like that.

not sure. it's worth a try. the thing is that Ohio State is very picky about who they interview.
firewall62 10-22-2009, 09:46 AM not sure. it's worth a try. the thing is that Ohio State is very picky about who they interview.
I hope you're right so I can look forward to a nice acceptance tomorrow morning. *Fingers crossed*

how do you know, rockaction? Did they tell you on the interview day?
dingyibvs 10-22-2009, 01:41 PM how do you know, rockaction? Did they tell you on the interview day?
Because they accept about 64% of the people they interview.
greenbeans08 10-22-2009, 02:52 PM For those of you who interviewed on October 12th, thoughts on when we'll hear? When they said 10 business days, did they mean tomorrow or Monday?
Eeeeeeeeek!:D
firewall62 10-22-2009, 04:41 PM Most likely tomorrow morning.

10 business days would be longer, but they usually do it a bit faster than that so very possibly tomorrow! Hope for good news for you guys.
nacholibre 10-22-2009, 07:15 PM Accepted 10/16. Got my call from Dean Capers today! I am way excited about this school, and am about 90% sure this is where I will be going.
Has anyone else decided if this is the place for them yet?

Deciding between OSU and Case is going to pretty much kill me. It's going to be heart-breaking to give one of those acceptances up!
ProtonatedAlchy 10-22-2009, 08:53 PM well either way your golden!
rockaction 10-22-2009, 09:53 PM how do you know, rockaction? Did they tell you on the interview day?
yes, Dean Capers told us at the beginning of our interview

for Ohio residents or OOS students?
rockaction 10-22-2009, 10:02 PM for Ohio residents or OOS students?
Not sure. But at the very least, for OOS it's above 50%

For some reason, I thought you were already a med student at OSU. Probably b/c of your screenname. If we interviewed the same day, I'm sure we've met. Nice to meet you! Hahah. And good luck!
Oh, and you too Firewall! (If applicable)
Is today really the day? Are we expecting an email or just a status change with no email?

Just called. The very nice lady at the office says that she usually gets decisions on Monday and tries to get them in to the system by Monday afternoon. Expect to see status changes and an email Tuesday morning.
Now I get my Friday back! Have a great weekend, and see you Tuesday! ;)
CoffeeCzar 10-23-2009, 10:04 AM Good luck guys. I'm probably to going to withdraw from a lot of my schools now that I have an OSU acceptance. It's way to early to say if I'll go here for sure, but I was VERY impressed by their program and I doubt I would go anywhere else unless I got into one of my dream schools. Ohio State really is the total package.
JonSwan 10-23-2009, 10:04 AM Accepted 10/16. Got my call from Dean Capers today! I am way excited about this school, and am about 90% sure this is where I will be going.
Has anyone else decided if this is the place for them yet?
I'm somewhere close to 90% as well on OSU. The only other contender at this point is Pitt. It may come down to financial aid.
greenbeans08 10-23-2009, 10:30 AM I'm supposed to go to Natty for an interview next Thursday. I won't go if I get into OSU. I can still cancel the flight and get a refund if I do it before the weekend. But of course that's IF I get in. Do you think it's a bad idea to call and ask?
dingyibvs 10-23-2009, 04:59 PM for Ohio residents or OOS students?
Both. The pre-interview invite rate for OOS students is slightly lower, I believe, but the post-interview acceptance rate is within a couple percentage points.
greenbeans08 10-25-2009, 06:07 PM I'm so, so nervous for Tuesday morning! Luckily, I don't have much else I'm supposed to be doing. Or maybe that's bad b/c my thoughts seem to wander back to OSU. Here's to hoping we all get in!
BlueElmo 10-25-2009, 06:19 PM so if we interview now, when do we hear back? I heard about 2 week turnaround time. Is that right?
casillas 10-25-2009, 06:47 PM so if we interview now, when do we hear back? I heard about 2 week turnaround time. Is that right?
They say officially that the most they take is 10 days. but it is usually much faster than that.

Wow, that's pretty cool.
firewall62 10-25-2009, 08:40 PM They say 10 business days. So it will be close to 2 weeks before you hear anything.
Hopefully everyone here gets accepted next week!

No I didn't, I was accepted the week of orientation. By then it was too late for me to matriculate this year. Sorry for not being more helpful about the deferment process! I really don't know how it works at OSU.
rockaction 10-26-2009, 10:52 AM Good luck for all who are waiting.
Fyi - your status change will likely occur without email. I got an email about my status change hours after my status actually changed. So your best bet of hearing will be to check your status online periodically.
It will be bold and intense. Good luck, and don't lose your mind checking the status page!

Ahh.. the time difference. I doubt they work that early so they must have set it to release statuses then, right? Does that mean I can stop checking today? :D
CoffeeCzar 10-26-2009, 02:05 PM If anyone is having trouble pulling together information for interview prep or just wants to know more about the school, I figured I'd leave you guys the link to the medical centers Youtube channel.

A lot of the people in the videos actually met us and talked to us on my interview day and I would recommend going through these videos - it will really give you an advantage at interview. I know it really helped me.

lstone13 10-28-2009, 08:24 AM Interview Invite here today!! Complete 10/2...
housemd? 10-28-2009, 08:24 AM Any suggestions on how to prepare for the upcoming interview? I did check the sdn "interview feedback" site for OSU interviews. Thanks in advance.
280224 10-28-2009, 08:32 AM ^ Everyone says you have to prepare for an ethical question at OSU interviews. I got one about a patient who was born here but her father was born in the Middle East and he made some demands (she was specific about them but I don't remember anymore) that coincided with his culture but wasn't in the best interest of the patient. She asked me what I would do at that point.

Haha I did the same thing. I called my mom and she started screaming on the phone (she's a CS engineer so everyone around her in their little cubicles could hear her lol). I remember driving somewhere to run an errand and I just started crying. Probably not the best thing I could have done while driving but I couldn't help it!

Know something about the school, know everything about yourself that you put in your application and most importantly...RELAX! OSU does a fantastic job of making you feel special just for having been invited to the interview. Remember that the statistics are in your favor - they accept about 60% of those who interview.

Thanks for the input guys. Also the answert to the Q fo the kid with the foreign father would be -- as the child is a minor & the father does have the final say for her -- you would try to convince the father of the issues & if all else fails, document the heck out of everything & obtain a witness signature?

The one caveat is if his demands are grossly negligent and present a clear danger to his daughter. Then the doctor can document and override his requests because they are negligent and illegal.

Can a doctor override the request? For ex. certain religions don't allow blood transfusions, even if that will save the patients life. Can a doctor override the request?
I am sure a doctor working in a hospital might be able to consult legal counsel, but without such advice -- once again, can a doctor override a request? Wont it be considered assault & battery at this point? I work as an EMS for a city fire dept. & that's what we have been trained. We are required to call medical direction & do as they say -- its CYA & let the s!@# roll uphill kind of deal.

i don't think doctors individually have that kind of autonomy anymore. they would most likely consult with ethics committee and lawyers.
firewall62 10-28-2009, 09:04 AM See you guys on second look day.
greenbeans08 10-28-2009, 09:10 AM Any suggestions on how to prepare for the upcoming interview? I did check the sdn "interview feedback" site for OSU interviews. Thanks in advance.
Hmmm.. I didn't get too many ethical questions. The only one I got was pretty common, and even so, I don't think I answered it all that well-- I was just honest and apparently that was enough. The rest were pretty personal. I'd just review your applications thoroughly so nothing catches you off guard.
I had two faculty members at my interview so it was less conversational than I was used to-- more of the typical Q&A and a bit more intense than my others. Still, I never at any point felt like they were trying to test me or put me on the spot. I walked away feeling a little shaken but happy.
I :biglove: OSU and Dr. Capers is awesome! Good luck!!
P.S. If you have a chance, go to Jeni's ice cream and get the salty caramel. It's to die for. I'm considering getting it shipped across the country and I'm broke as a joke.
greenbeans08 10-28-2009, 09:11 AM See you guys on second look day.
So you're not deferring? Did they say when you have to tell them by?
greenbeans08 10-28-2009, 09:12 AM Accepted too! I got the call as I was boarding a plane for my duke interview lol! Congrats everyone!
Congrats! See you at second look!
BBender716 10-28-2009, 09:14 AM i don't think doctors individually have that kind of autonomy anymore. they would most likely consult with ethics committee and lawyers.
Yeah, "medical direction" would be the physicians in charge and they would in turn contact a judge. The judge will make the decision if the parent's request constitutes negligence. If yes, then you can do it. With regards to emergency situations, there's usually a hotline of sorts for legal advice for hospitals and this will put any responsibility on the the hospital if you follow it's legal counsel.
EDIT: then again if you got this far into the issue with an interviewer, they would probably recognize that you have a good head on your shoulders and a strong concept of what is right and wrong to you and how informed consent works...
BlueElmo 10-28-2009, 09:15 AM Gosh, why is my interview in November. I wish I had done it earlier.:(
greenbeans08 10-28-2009, 09:15 AM Haha I did the same thing. I called my mom and she started screaming on the phone (she's a CS engineer so everyone around her in their little cubicles could hear her lol). Your mom makes me :) (Not in a gross way- I'm a girl)
Also, it's all about the tears of joy while driving. I'm sure my office and my neighbors think I'm unstable.
280224 10-28-2009, 09:27 AM ^ lol yeah my mom was probably happier than I was!

I agree with everyone else and that's what I said basically. Since the girl is a minor the physician has the authority to do whatever is in her best interest, especially if it's an emergency situation.
I also said something about her father moving his family to America and he shouldn't expect us to follow his customs when he lives here.
The interview is very relaxed though (unless you're very, very unlucky and you get a intimidating interviewer)... they don't sit there and drill you with ethical questions. They incorporate it into the conversation :).
CyclistOK 10-28-2009, 09:38 AM Just FYI, I didn't have any ethical questions when I interviewed.
greenbeans08 10-28-2009, 09:40 AM Gosh, why is my interview in November. I wish I had done it earlier.:(
No worries, Blue! They accept 400 for their class of ~200. November is not late at all! At least I hope not b/c I'm still hoping for more interviews.
280224 10-28-2009, 10:18 AM I keep thinking about it and my Albany and Ohio State interviews were really close to each other. I could be mixing them up. Was it Albany that always has an ethical question?
Still, I know my Ohio State interviewer gave me one because I clicked with her so well (we both go shooting!) and I remember more about our conversation than with any other interviewer. I don't even remember who my interviewer was at Albany.
Golf Shoes 10-28-2009, 05:43 PM For those of you still waiting to hear back about an interview, I received an invite earlier today. Scheduled for 2/17/10. Application complete for about a week. Very excited. Sounds like a great school.

Considering OSU interviews very few people, I'd say you still have a great chance of acceptance even if you interview in February. Still probably a 50/50. You just have to shine at that interview.

Deferment is when you accept the offer but request to start 1 year later. Ohio State only asks that you have a compelling reason. They approve most requests.

Yeah, I've been wondering the same thing. I think I read something about a $25 (or 50) acceptance fee. Do you think we get something in the mail with more instructions?

You will! It's also in the mailing that it's not due until, I believe, May. So no need to worry about it for quite a while.
JonSwan 11-02-2009, 10:55 AM I'm in a Master's program right now and there's a chance (50/50) I won't finish my degree before next fall due to setbacks in my research. I know OSU requires you to finish your BS before matriculating, but does anyone know if not completing my Master's would be an issue? I haven't found anything on their website/acceptance materials about this and I'm hesitant to call the admissions office.

It's a matter of preference. I viewed it as unnecessary and I didn't send any thank you notes. It doesn't impact your admissions decision one way or the other.
After being accepted to Case, I emailed my faculty interviewer to share the news with him. My OSU interviewers actually emailed me so I emailed them back saying thanks. It's all a matter of preference.
But do grab a business or something from all your interviewers in case you have more questions for them.

1) 5 pm is a bit rushed, 5:30 is OK, but 6 is safe.
2) It depends on where you're flying from.

umm, it ends at 3? i was thinking 4 for some reason. we did have to wait around for quite a while for some guy who's changing out of his suit, so it took us over an hour, so the time might be tight.
brooklynblunder 11-03-2009, 06:00 PM they said it could end at 4. it probably depends on your day and how you kick it with your last interviewer. if they say it ends at 4, i wouldnt plan a flight for 5 but 545 is more than enough
if your flight is in mid january i would use Bing to track prices because they may not have had all the flights scheduled for that route yet (possibly). there isnt really a good reason to buy now

ahhh that's right, i remember now. On the interview invite thing they had different start/finish times depending on which date you interview. That's why I thought it was 4. 5:25 flight should still be fine. That gives you a bit leeway just in case your ride is late or you have to wait on something/someone or some random holdup at the airport.

Part of the reason why I loved OSU so much was because of my host. She picked me up from the airport, took me to dinner, and also dropped me off. *crossing my fingers in the meantime!* lets hope i get in!
cher25 11-04-2009, 06:14 PM I had a different experience with my host. Though I'm grateful that I was able to crash on the couch. My host did not pick me or drop me at the airport, did not have food available at the house and was unwilling to take me out to buy food and in result each time I needed to eat, I had to walk blocks to some local restaurants (in the rain)... and dropped me off on campus for my interviews 2 hours in advance because she had class.
Like I said, I'm grateful for the couch and that saved money on hotel fees and I'm glad that I had a ride to the campus. But this was a very different hosting experience than I had grown accustomed to.

JJMrK 11-05-2009, 12:33 AM No offense, but what's so special about this school? Why are you so positive about this school? I think it's over-hyped. The interviews sucked--the interviewers never cracked a smile, but I kept smiling and being positive. I heard a lot of negative comments about other interviewers from my fellow interviewees. For example, one interviewer explicitly told an applicant with Ph.D in Harvard that research is a bad thing. WTF? Maybe it was just a bad day at OSU...

If you want to find an apartment, I'd suggest coming here winter break and looking for some, leases on campus are usually due by jan/feb. But if you want to live away from campus you can come down in the summer.

Right now I wouldn't worry about housing too much, I was still looking for housing 3 weeks before class started and had no trouble finding a great place! Columbus is definitely a renter's market. People find roommates mainly through second look day and also the facebook group that usually gets started up.
Most of the med school student don't live on campus. There is plenty of cheap and affordable housing within walking distance. Places where a lot of people live in would include the streets right by the med school, an area called Victorian Village and a complex called the Meridian.
If you plan to have a car this opens up your options further and a good number of us also live 10-15 minutes drive away in really nice complexes.

Tortue 11-06-2009, 05:51 AM I applied to Ohio State but I am being considered for their post-bacc program. My MCAT score was not very good :mad::eek: Does anybody know more about their program?? I am OOS.
Thanks and congratulations to those accepted!! :luck:
BlueElmo 11-06-2009, 06:15 AM hmmm, for those that have been to u of cincinnati, what's the biggest differences youve seen b/w there and osu? just trying to see what i should keep my eye out for when i come for the interview
...speaking of interview, i'm interviewing on the 16th and i've yet to be assigned a host. when do they usually get back to you about it?
thanks yall
It takes about a week. Wait until next week to see what happens to the host assigning.

I've been accepted into both. They don't seem to have a lot in common. Both have a very different atmosphere. UC has a nicer newer med building, I think OSU has more resources, happier students, etc. Functional differences are Honors/High Pass/Pass/Fail for UC with nonblocked classes. OSU has blocked classes and Pass/Fail with Honors at the high end.
dingyibvs 11-07-2009, 02:11 PM Yea, UC has essentially an ABCF system while OSU has essentially a P/F system. OSU does have honors, but it's like the top 5% or something, basically not really worth it to actually try to get it.

The postbacc program at ohio state is called Medpath. Basically if you are accepted into it, you take year of various courses that get you prepared for med school (such as physiology, anatomy, chem etc). If you pass all these courses, then you are automatically guaranteed entrance into the following year's class. You can basically think of it as getting into med school, but just for five years instead of 4. I think they accept around 30 people out of 110 or so candidates. This year I think there are 27 or so in the M1 class.

Phone calls don't necessarily come before decisions appear on the status page. I got my phone call about 4 days after my status page updated. AND, the email telling you that your status changed can come late.
cher25 11-09-2009, 08:29 PM Missed a call from an unknown number around 9:22 CST. Checked my message and it was Dr. Capers congratulating me on my acceptance! He said that status updates will be up tomorrow! Interviewed 10/28 btw.:biglove:

jahen86 11-11-2009, 09:48 PM does anyone know if delaying your decision on whether or not to accept affects your competitiveness for scholarships/F.A.?
i.e., if I decide to accept sooner rather than later, does that improve my chances at a better financial aid package? i'm under the impression that it doesn't, but I just wanted to check to be sure...

why don't you hit accept and then decide by may 15

Always "accept" your acceptances... this shouldn't take any thought. If you withdraw eventually, you'll get your deposit back (except for some D.O. schools). You generally only have a small amount of time to take the acceptance anyway (maybe a few weeks).

i would assume that they would offer you more money if you were uncertain which school to pick so as o convince you.

Actually there are some allopathic schools that won't give you the deposit back, like FIU which has a 200 dollars non-refundable deposit. OSU gives you until May 15th to pay the deposit, so you don't even have to give the 25 bucks to them until then.
housemd? 11-12-2009, 05:31 AM i would assume that they would offer you more money if you were uncertain which school to pick so as o convince you.
If you hold multiple acceptances -- which one can -- isn't that being uncertain of which school to go to? After all after hitting accept, one will look at the fin aid package that eventually gets offered.
On the other hand, you dont want to miss that accept deadline, & consequently not be considered.

I don't know exactly when, but the schools will eventually be able to see your other acceptances and then they might offer you money. If you are the bomb, or a URM, you might get offered money up front in an attempt to dissuade you from doing to your other interviews and considering other options.

I should have elaborated on what i was thinking but others have mentioned it. by being uncertain i did mean holding multiple acceptances and not being sure where to go for financial reasons. I think in such a case first of all for OSU you should go ahead and accept online just to reserve your spot. but the snail mail they send you with the deposit due is not due till May so that is what i meant you should perhaps hold off on until you get financial packets.

I have a question because I received an interview invite a while ago and my interview is confirmed for 2 weeks from now. However, I haven't received an e-mail yet explaining the day and the schedule and where to go. Do they send that out closer to the interview, or should I call them? My interview invite was through a status update and I confirmed it right then. Thanks for any response, I am really looking forward to OSU and congrats to everyone who is accepted all ready.
