BlueElmo 11-16-2009, 07:36 PM Yeah, I don't know what to tell you blue. I haven't heard anything either. However, I did check my status page and it still just says "interview complete". Maybe they didn't get around to it today. Better luck tomorrow?
Hope so. Are there really only two of us from that 11/2 group on SDN? Wish I knew if others from 11/2 got calls.

? that doesn't make sense brook
brooklynblunder 11-16-2009, 11:12 PM yea idk i can just go to the status page and idk, type in the password from heart and not be thrown off by it. its like the first letter of your first name, last 4 #s of amcas, last letter of your last name and then first 2 #s of amcas. i think its a really complicated password if you take a step back and look at it. maybe because all my pw are like dogcatlovex0x0ladygaga but i just feel like a really intense pre-med for being able to recall the OSU status page pw! you dont feel that way?

BlueElmo 11-17-2009, 05:35 AM Deferred. So when do they look at us deferred people again? It says our applications are looked at every week, but wondering if I stand a chance.

:\ that sucks bro. I'm sure you still have a chance! Remember that OSU has a big class size, so I envision there will be lots of ebb and flow as far as acceptances go.

ChocolateShogun 11-17-2009, 08:15 AM Accepted (35, 3.98 if interested). I'm sorry BlueElmo for the deferral and I wish you luck over the rest of the process.

Hey BlueElmo -- cheer up man. You atleast are definetly going to med school!!! I would say 50% of candidates at this point (me included) still dont know if they are going to get in & 10% of the overall will NOT get in at all.
Hey rock, you know if they look at deferred people after they interview everyone next February? That would suck, urg.
Hey Elmo,
Im in a similar situation as you, deferred at THE osu. i went through last year's forums and it looks like they start looking again in mid January
earlier than case, which is march

ilikekiwis 11-17-2009, 11:00 AM interviewed yesterday...this school rocks. the facilities, people, etc are awesome. students are happy, what more could you ask for?
but...the actual interview was the most odd of all the interviews ive been one. had two faculty at the same time and while one was nice and said it would be conversational, i ended up just being grilled by the other interviewer with question after question about pretty much every standard/nonstandard interview question out there o_O
kinda hard to judge what they thought

glad you liked the school...in terms of interview I had the exact same situation, and it turned out fine so don't worry about it
housemd? 11-17-2009, 11:28 AM It takes 10 business days of the interview for the final decision -- my intervies is Dec 9 -- 10th business day is Dec 23. I am pretty sure the offices are closed then.
Anyone know, what dates are the offices closed for christmas/new year?

I interviewed at OSU in September and was deferred as well, but the two student hosts I stayed with were both accepted from the deferred list in early December. They said it was not uncommon so I think (I hope) there's still a shot for us deferree's.

Yeah, for sure. I think I remember my student host saying similar things about deferred list. I'm pretty fortunate I am deferred and not rejected, let's hope things turn out right.:luck:

i def got grilled hardcore by a surgeon...
yee haw 11-17-2009, 12:53 PM I'm in too, looks like I'll be a Buckeye next year! It'll take a while getting used to the red, but I'll have to, BYU blue might be mistaken for that other blue school.
imcanadaian 11-17-2009, 03:25 PM deferred as well :( Gonna work on that letter of intent. Mann this stinks
any tips on how i should deliver it? i know PDF if im emailing. should i do it via snail mail?

Haha doubt it, they are maize and blue. Plus tons of BYU students here
ps congrats!
drpepper55 11-17-2009, 09:08 PM The deferred list is difficult to generalize because its different from year to year. Last year, very few deferred students were accepted than average because more students matriculated than the OSU admissions office believed would. But, there is still hope.
Last year, I was deferred after interviewing in mid-October and I sent at least three update letters, hearing nothing until mid-May from the admissions office that basically told me to keep waiting. Thankfully, I received a phone call in early July accepting me, so there is still a chance for those on the deferred list, but there is no telling when you will get in, if at all.
In any case, best of luck to you all in the application process.

firewall62 11-18-2009, 12:24 PM For anyone who is interested, I finally got my OSU e-mail set up, but I had to contact IT and ask them to fix it. So if you're having problems, send them an e-mail. The admissions office can't help you with that.

What do you mean? The only email you should get is one that says "Yo, check your status, there be changes." Mine came a couple hours after my status had changed.

A few people earlier in the thread said that they already received their osu e-mail account.. you know 'student@osu' e-mail. That's what I'm wondering about because it didn't come with my admissions packet.

Wow, that's late. Good luck.
tallandshort 11-19-2009, 08:51 AM So I just received an interview invite, so excited!! I'm just a little worried that it's in March, will there be any spots left at that point? :( It doesn't matter a whole lot since I will definitely still come to my interview even if it's for a waitlist spot, but does anyone have any info about this based on past application cycles? Also, I wanted to visit some family in Ohio over the winter break which for me is about a month from the 3rd week of Dec through the 3rd week of January. Do you think if I let them know about this they would be open to moving my interview date if an opening became available so I wouldn't have to make two trips? Thank you!

They probably won't change your date. I inquired about this, and they said they can't move your date earlier, because they are all booked. But you can change your date to later.

OSU has no frontcourt whatsoever. Until they fix that, they can't expect to beat teams like the Tar Heels. Lauderdale is decent on defense but his only way of scoring on offense is by dunking the ball. Kyle Madsen was completely overmatched out there. Sadly, Evan Turner is their best post player....

i actually went to HS w/ lauderdale. every friday...some great games. and the playoff run we had was great until we ran until raymar morgan and canton mckinley.
i don't know if this is too indicative of the entire season to come (and it's so early). i feel like the strength of UNC IS their front court w/ davis and zeller...not too many teams have so many legitimate big men who clearly will go pro (well maybe not clear w/ zeller) at some point.
BlueElmo 11-20-2009, 06:52 AM But Evan Turner is amazing, no doubt. I think he's probably one of the best NBA prospects right now in college basketball. I wouldn't be surprised if he became a lottery pick come next year's draft.

You can always ask. I was scheduled for 2/1/10, but I just decided to call this past Wed. to see if anything was open. They gave me a spot for 11/23 and the receptionist said that they have a bunch of spots open in January.

Yeah those McKinley teams with Raymar Morgan were absolutely stacked. Three straight final fours and two back to back state championships. Unbelievable. We played them both my junior and senior years of high school. We hung with them my junior year but got ran off the court my senior year.

Yeah, I'm fairly certain that it had something to do with my relative lack of community service. My interviewer remarked on how solid they thought my academic credentials were but also hinted that the ADCOM might be concerned at the slightly low amount of community service/volunteering.
Compared to Pitt and Case, OSU seemed to place a higher emphasis on the community service (not that Case and Pitt didn't care, they just didn't seem to push it as much as OSU). My Case and Pitt interviewers seemed more interested in academic credentials and neither even hinted at volunteering/community service but rather focused on classes, grades, and research.
Nevertheless, I fell in love with OSU while there soooooooooooooo......

futuredoc88 11-25-2009, 05:48 AM Yeah, hopefully they get to us deferred people again in December. Hopefully.
Yeah! The worst part is they know they have our hopes, dreams, and aspirations hanging in the balance...yet, still, they make us wait. I'm sure it'll turn out well for both of us though!................ :o
futuredoc88 11-30-2009, 06:24 PM Does anyone have any pertinent advice regarding the effect of a letter of intent at this school? I know that some schools welcome them while other schools are more "We saw you at the Interview" and generally don't care what you send them-it's more of a "luck" thing whether you're accepted off the deferred list or not. Any input or insight into this school would be appreciated! Thanks!

Because mine still says "Interview completed"... yet dean capers called me last night (and i'm pretty sure I wasn't hallucinating...)
pppfcr 12-01-2009, 08:19 AM I guess no one has status updates this morning (including those who were accepted).... I'm still waiting. (why is there no finger's crossed icon)... good luck to filhodeinferno and sportygirl10 too. I'm right there with you two.

no worries, not gonna go down without a fight. imma send an update letter this weekend and a rec letter next month
lackli 12-01-2009, 11:32 PM Does anyone have any pertinent advice regarding the effect of a letter of intent at this school? I know that some schools welcome them while other schools are more "We saw you at the Interview" and generally don't care what you send them-it's more of a "luck" thing whether you're accepted off the deferred list or not. Any input or insight into this school would be appreciated! Thanks!
As someone who got in off the deferred list last year I think I can speak a little to this. As a caveat this is Dean Capers first year as Dean of Admissions so it might be a little different to the year prior when it was Dr. Batisky (he's since gone to a Atlanta). Anyway...I know as a neurotic SDN surfer last year, I wanted any scrap of information I could get my grubby little hands on so that I could analyze in triplicate my chances of getting off the deferred list. So I'm just going to spill my guts here...these are just my observations from going through the process and from sdn last year. Each year is different and it depends on the applicant pool, so please don't take what happened last year as set in stone! Some years 100 people get in off the deferred list...others much less.
A little background on how admissions at OSU works. It's really different from most other schools that I know of. Basically after you finish your interviews, that afternoon there is a meeting to decide on your fate so to speak. They put your face up on a screen and it's up to both your student interviewer and faculty interviewer to present you to the rest of the committee. Most of the time they defend you and any flaws that you might have in your application based on what you might have told them in the interview. If you messed up your interview, you kinda lost your advocate there. But that's why there are 2 of them. So that day they assign you a numerical score based on your strength as an applicant. For all intents in purposes the initial decision to let you in is made that afternoon. I believe a very low proportion (10%?) get outright rejected if you have no chance of admission...but I could be wrong here. Otherwise you are deferred and it really sucks to be in limbo so I feel for you guys.
In years past, say even 3-4 years ago being deferred was actually not a bad situation to be in. I don't think OSU was that high on people's lists for whatever reason and a good proportion of the initial acceptees decided to go elsewhere. So maybe 1/3-1/2 of the eventual class was taken off the deferred list come May. That's a good 50-100 people a year and pretty good odds.
Unfortunately last year this was not the case. OSU might have been a lot higher on people's lists or maybe they accepted more people initially than usual last year (who knows maybe they'll account for that this year?). They did have a period of where they reevaluated the deferred pool late February/early March as the overall class was shaping up. They admitted some students I guess to "round out" the class and keep it diverse So this is your first chance to get off the deferred list. I'm not sure if they let people in off the deferred prior to Feb last year because that is when I interviewed and started checking SDN.
Not too many people withdrew after second look weekends were over. By May 15th (the day when you have to have only one school) the class was still very much over booked by 30 people . I think around this time they do sit down and go over all the applicants again and a shortlist of people to admit if spots open up. BUT they won't tell you it exists AND it's not a list that is in any set order. They are looking to see who withdraws and they try to admit another similar student.
Eventually it did slowly work it's way down so that around June 10th they were able to start letting in some of us off the deferred list. I think the last person they called a week before classes were about to start (so don't give up hope until the day before class starts! you too can be that kid with the story that they only got a call a week ago!). Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be that many off the deferred list this year. Somewhere on the magnitude of 10-20. It's hard to say because most people don't advertise the fact that they got in off the waitlist. I also don't know how many were admitted in March tho...so overall the numbers of the deferred list might be higher than this. There are also a very small number of students that actually get offered admission for the year after if you were good enough to get in...but there just weren't enough spots b/c you interviewed late.
Here's the good news- OSUs admissions office is one of the nicest around. They put up with my calling just about every day after May 15th :). I interviewed late February. I wrote one letter of update in March and one letter of strong desire to attend in early May. They add these to your file and it really did seem to make a difference. They might not read them that thoroughly (I glanced at it a couple months ago and I had a typo my first sentence!), but the fact that they are there make a difference. It's still pretty early, so you can update them if you have anything significant to add. I wouldn't inundate them or anything. But a clip of 1 every 2 months or so seems appropriate. I personally don't think a LOI is necessary this early in the game. Save it for after interview season is over and you know you mean it. You can't take it back after it has been sent.
What I put in my letters:
-why I really really really wanted to attend
-what had changed in the past year/months that made me a better candidate
-what I could contribute to the school if I were able to gain admittance
-addressed any weaknesses in my application.
I know it is hard this early in the season to get feedback on your application because things are full swing, but it's definitely worth a shot to ask schools why you've been rejected by them. You'd be surprised how many people have issues that they didn't realize they had: bad letters of rec, not explaining enough a change from law to med or bad interviews when they thought they had gone amazing etc etc.
I found these pretty inspiring when writing my letters, the first one especially (their spirit, not the format):

filhodeinferno 12-02-2009, 08:05 AM Thanks for taking the time to post this. Very helpful.
BlueElmo 12-02-2009, 08:25 AM So does this mean us deferred people have not a good chance? Sorry for the grammar.
CoffeeCzar 12-02-2009, 08:31 AM The more I start to factor in the cost of attending medical school, especially private schools, the more attractive Ohio State looks with in-state tuition after the first year. It's a very high quality school with one of the cheapest costs of attending that I have seen for an out of state school. See you guys at second look.
Congrats to all those accepted! Good luck to deferred applicants - everything will work out in the end.
lackli 12-02-2009, 01:28 PM So does this mean us deferred people have not a good chance? Sorry for the grammar.
I wish I could tell you for sure, I really don't know! That's dependent on so many thing like how many people they took straight up or how many people withdraw to go to other places. A sample size of one year is not much to go on...who knows maybe this year they'll take a whole bunch of people off the list.
Just give yourself the best chance possible by showing you maintain interest and improve yourself as a candidate.
osumc2014 12-02-2009, 01:34 PM lackli how are you liking first year so far??
rockaction 12-02-2009, 05:26 PM lackli how are you liking first year so far??
yes, please tell us!
Case and OSU are battling for my heart; Case has so much representation at SDN, so I need to hear the OSU opinions. tell me everything that rocks about OSU.
lackli 12-02-2009, 09:12 PM Haha you're right! I glanced at cases thread and it seems like a much more happening place. carving eggplants?! what?
I have a couple friends at case and they love it there. It's pretty different tho in terms of feel and I don't think I would have fit in there as well. It's true what they say...the med school that suits you the most will find you. I'll mention what little i know about case...i'm not bashing it by any means but I just want to contrast because i think it's a close call for a lot of people.
let me break OSU down for you:
what I like:
1. cheap- no.1, hands down, biggest reason to come here. You don't realize it when you are applying but money is a huge huge factor after graduation. it affects your choice in specialty, what you can do (global health when you have 200K in debt anyone?) and your lifestyle. by the time you are out of residency and in a position to pay off your debt, you want to be thinking more about spending your attending pay on a house for you family, cars and kids...not your debt.
at OSU you can get in state after a year and save 15K at least a year over most other schools. hey that's a 15K scholarship if you want to put another spin on it. If you are top 25% in the class at the end of each year you can get a extra 5000 dollar merit scholarship thrown in too. columbus is a cheap town.
2. anatomy is taught really well here. dr.dephillip, the division head...all he does is teach, or do research on teaching.
3. community feel. I don't feel like a number here at all. there are 220 of us, but we have a group of 12 called a learning community that meets with a doctor every month for dinner. he/she is kinda like a mentor/guide for you and helps make sure you aren't lost in the shuffle. Every month there is also a school wide Dean's dinner which is kinda like a town hall meeting with all the bigwigs so you can voice concerns. they usually bring someone in to talk as well.
4. tests every 3 weeks. I know Case has them at much longer intervals. personally i couldn't imagine that at all. there is so much material that my brain can't handle more than a months worth before exploding.
5. football (and being good at it)
6. lots of students=lots of interest groups=lots of free meals
7. there is an interdisciplinary global health program here. you take 14 credits your first two years in various global health classes. 4th year you do an away rotation abroad or even more if you want.
8. Big on ultrasound here. it's emphasized in anatomy and you can get some extra training throughout your four years. it's a big big plus when applying to certain residencies. OSU is only one of 3 schools in the country with something like this and I think the only one where you can get a rmds as well.
9. that little sumthin sumthin. I can't really put it into words...but when you are walking in the grassy area in front of the main hospital and it says "THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY" in big bold letters, all you can think is..."damn straight"
what I don't like:
1. CAPs- kinda like the practice in medicine, you know history taking, physical exam. coming in i thought great idea! in practice they have it regularly for 3 hours every week. I feel like it's a waste of time and really breaks up the flow of the day/week. and it's hard to focus on it when you have a test coming up so often. would prefer if they did something like at michigan where it is all compacted into one week chunks.
2. lectures- once anatomy was over i realized how great the lecturers were. the Cell block lecturers...let's just say some are excellent and others don't suit my style. I'm only a first year so maybe it gets better.:xf: I don't go to lecture anymore and podcast the lectures i know are good. Can't say that this is a problem that only OSU has though. Also I know that all Case lectures are mandatory attendance and only if you are sick can you access the podcast.
3. They hit you hard with the coursework as soon as you get here. I know at Case they ease you in with some of the more nebulous topics in medicine like ethics etc. Which is why school for them starts in July. That is pretty awesome actually because the class gets to party together for a whole month and I think they are a little closer as a class then OSU is.
4. you don't get your own assigned carrel like at case (unless you are ISP)......i'm a little bitter over this.
what I'm ambivalent about:
1. If you have a family or just study better on your own, there is the whole independent study program thing here. It's great for those who want to do it...i'm sure you heard it on interview day a whole lot. You probably won't see these people that much anymore haha.
2. senior partner's project- pair you up with a geriatric patient and you develop a relationship over 2 years with them. has not started so can't really comment.
3. OSU is shooting up the rankings. It was 40 something not too long ago. 27 this year vs 25 for case. considering that OSU just decided to spend 1 billion dollars on a new hospital i think it'll hit top 20 pretty soon. but then again...only your mom really cares about this thing. residency directors don't. and you definitely don't after you get in.
osumc2014 12-02-2009, 09:32 PM
I know what you mean about the sumthin sumthin hehe
BlueElmo 12-02-2009, 09:35 PM sounds awsome lackli, now I just need to find a way to get accepted.
rockaction 12-02-2009, 10:18 PM amazing post, thanks so much!! hearing from the students is really the way to go in making these decisions :)
JonSwan 12-03-2009, 07:56 AM OSU seemed to just have a little extra shine to it that I have yet to see at any other program. There is definitely something in the air at OSU that you can't put your finger on - "sumthin' sumthin'" is probably the best way to put it. I'm very close to making the "official decision" to attend next year.

got an invite from this school.
the interview is set on the 3rd of march though...kinda late even for an oos dont u think?
lackli 12-03-2009, 01:15 PM Hey guys,
as you go about making your med school decisions here's some food for thought:
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=104541
it's still really relevant even after 5 years. a lot of what med schools try to sell you in the application process comes out as a wash. only thing I would add to it would be cost of attendance...otherwise it's one of the best posts ever.
medat101 12-03-2009, 07:31 PM Anyone deciding between OSU and another school?? I can't remember anything about the interviews or schools.. I think I blocked out all the painful memories haha :o

This is my third interview overall and my second in Ohio, I have a third Ohio interview coming up at Toledo (but if I'm accepted elsewhere I might withdraw). Ohio is very kind to OOS, my fingers are crossed... :)

have you looked at the interview feedback tab all the way at the top of the page. I think the reviews there were pretty specific.
but the interview was pretty low stress, if you are out of state have a convincing reason why you would go to Ohio state and not a school in your state. i think the point of this is to prove that this is not just a safety school.

It's a nice interview. My interviewers were all nice, I mean most medical school interviews are pretty low-stress, and this one was no different. Good luck!
WildcatS11 12-07-2009, 07:52 PM To be honest, I haven't had any stressful interviews whatsoever. I'm starting to think that being grilled in an interview is just one big myth.

Trust me, it is not a myth. While some neurotic gunners may be exaggerating, many people, myself included, have had stressful interviews that didn't come off as conversational. There is a difference between a bad interview and a stressful interview. I have had bad interviews. However, I have also been "grilled" with rapid-fire questions and openly objected to on subjective, ethical questions in rude ways that created a hostile environment. Granted this was only at one school out of the many I interviewed at, it still does happen. Consider yourself lucky you haven't experienced this type of interviewer yet.

My interview at tOSU was actually the most I've ever been grilled and questioned about my application. It was probably also the most stressful. Not saying it was bad or anything, just more intense than any of the other schools I've interviewed at.
medat101 12-07-2009, 09:00 PM My OSU interview was equally stressing due to all the grilling. It was my first one too, so I was still a little inexperienced. In some of my later interviews at other schools, I actually was grilled again on the same exact pts as at OSU, so by then I was prepared with responses and didn't feel as stressed by the situation.

well I obviously can't speak for anyone else, but most people I talked to would agree OSU is very stress free, at least they try to make it that way...now if you had other schools grill you on the same points then I think you might have a different definition of "grillin"
BlueElmo 12-07-2009, 09:50 PM I mean, what were these "grillings" about?
Grilling barbecue, duh.
Got the call from Dr. Capers tonight!
would you mind sharing when you interviewed? i interviewed last week and am hoping to find out about their decision early, before the "10 business days" like they say
and congrats by the way!

it's pretty much two weeks. i interviewed on a monday, and i thought i might hear back in a week. it was two.
CoffeeCzar 12-07-2009, 10:05 PM I agree. OSU was by far my least stressful interview. I would add though that, in my opinion, the individual interviewer you get is a more important predictor of your stress level than is the school at which you interview. While schools may have general guidelines, interviewers usually interview based upon their own personal style.
And when I say I was "grilled", I mean that I feel I was "grilled" in a rude way that I felt wasn't fair to me as an applicant and took advantage of the interview-interviewee relationship. Asking tough questions and raising objections to your application or your answer to a question in a non-confrontational, reasonable way is NOT grilling! It is testing you as an applicant. Medical schools will be investing thousands of dollars in you as a student, and if they want to see how you react under pressure, so be it.
If you are confident in your application and you know yourself, you should actually look at these interviews as a way to show you can preform under pressure. I personally enjoy being challenged in interviews if done in a fair, respectful way.

allright, thanks for the info. guess ill have to wait as well then :(
lackli 12-07-2009, 11:00 PM I agree. OSU was by far my least stressful interview. I would add though that, in my opinion, the individual interviewer you get is a more important predictor of your stress level than is the school at which you interview. While schools may have general guidelines, interviewers usually interview based upon their own personal style.
This is true..sometimes I feel it's just the luck of the draw. However it's been my experience that some schools have "go to" interviewers for the must have candidates so their interviews are more consistent/friendly. They're almost recruiters instead of interviewers.
On the flip side there was one school I interviewed really really late last year where the interviewer flat out told me he had been chosen for me because he was tough and I had something to prove to get one of the last few spots of the season. he wasn't so much tough as out in left field at times...he asked me how he could test my integrity...and the answer he was looking for was "facebook".
DejaEntendu 12-08-2009, 11:05 AM would you mind sharing when you interviewed? i interviewed last week and am hoping to find out about their decision early, before the "10 business days" like they say
and congrats by the way!

sportygirl10 12-10-2009, 10:11 AM Hey guys need your advice.
I was recently waitlisted and I have written my letter. Should I email it to the Admissions office addressed to Dean Capers? I could also send it directly to Dean Capers himself, but I'm not sure if that is appropriate.

I sent mine to the admissions office website. They'll place it in the file for you, so that should be fine.

JJMrK 12-13-2009, 08:33 PM scholarship news?
Has anybody heard anything about this? I remember getting an email about it, but I was thinking they'd want a FAFSA first.
greenbeans08 12-14-2009, 09:37 AM Has anybody heard anything about this? I remember getting an email about it, but I was thinking they'd want a FAFSA first.
I think merit-based aid comes before FAFSA. I heard that they start calling mid December, which would be... now!

yep but havent heard of anyone getting any calls
although that'd be a pretty awesome Christmas gift :D
JonSwan 12-14-2009, 09:51 AM Yeah, merit scholarships are given out starting in December until April. I believe need based comes in after FAFSA is submitted and before school starts. Then there are private scholarships that you are considered for if you put your parental information on the FAFSA. The top 15% (I think) of each class is given a scholarship as well. It seems like financial aid is pretty generous at OSU.

StaterOhio 12-15-2009, 05:57 AM Deferred. Got the update this morning. I figured this would happen, as I didnt get a call last night. This is my first post on SDN. OSU was my third interview...and subsequently my third waitlist (IS, 3.9 GPA, 34). Im starting to think it's not in the cards for me this time around. I just wanted to say "thanks" to all who post on this forum. It's a big help to people like me who read it, but do not typically post.

Hey bro -- they pick a lot of people from the deferred list, so all is not lost. Hang in there -- you might get your acceptance later. What does it matter -- you'll be there on first day of class with all the other superstars with 7 million acceptances.

Idkachic1216 12-15-2009, 09:51 AM For everyone curious- I spoke with financial aid. People will be notified of merit based scholarships starting at the end of december/beginning of january. Need based aid will come out in the spring. Probably not going to be a great christmas present, more like a happy new year...
tallandshort 12-15-2009, 10:15 AM Ok, so I just did something extremely difficult for me but I hope it will help one of you guys out. I just withdrew my application from OSU, also canceling my interview. I really love OSU and was so excited to go, OSU was actually my #2 choice. But I just received an acceptance from my #1 choice (which I am really excited about), and therefore would like to give my interview spot to someone who needs it more than me. I was originally scheduled for March 1st but just got moved to Jan 6th yesterday (I had called OSU and got on a list to be moved up to an earlier interview date if a position opened up, before my acceptance of course). Anyway, if anyone has a later date for their interview and wants to call the office and ask for Jan 6th, now you have a shot at getting it. By the way, when I called to request getting moved sooner, Jan 6th interviews were definitely not for wait lists, they were for actual spots in the class. Don't know if that has changed by now, but I wouldn't think so. Good luck to everyone! Not that I have to tell you guys this, but OSU is an awesome school.

At the info session on my interview day, I'm pretty sure someone asked a related question about rolling admissions, and they stressed that some acceptances are saved for the qualified applicants who happen to interview later in the season. I think most schools will tell you that they never interview for the waitlist...I haven't heard of one school who says they do that (or would actually admit to it).
rg871 12-16-2009, 01:09 PM hey,

what am i supposed to see?

I get the same thing. Just a red screen that you have to skip. I've noticed that there are quite a few pages on the OSUCOM website that appear to be dead.

For those who recently received interview invitations, when were your applications complete?
My application has been complete since 10/23. I haven't heard from OSU since then; my status page remains the same. Realistically speaking, am I out of the running for an interview? I know that I should continue hoping for the best -- I am in a borderline panicked state from uncertainty and would really appreciate honest opinions from you all...
Does OSU notify applicants promptly of pre-interview rejections or do they postpone notification until the end of the application season?

To give somewhat of an answer to your question:
The last time I called the admissions office (about a week ago), I was told that interviews are booked through the middle of march.
Good luck :xf:

Thanks. OSU's interview season typically ends in March, right? I am hoping that if I get rejected pre-interview, I would receive an invitation to apply for their MedPath Program. Are my chances also slim for MedPath consideration at this point?

I believe the financial aid office helps students with this, so you might want to call them. If you go to the Class of 2014 thread in the allopathic subforum, they also had a recent discussion about this. I do know that a few of my friends wanted to go back out of state for research during the summer between 1st and 2nd years and that this was going to be problematic in terms of gaining in-state tuition for 2nd year. I don't remember how it worked out, but I think they ended up having to stay in Ohio. Again, a good reason to call financial aid and ask. They're very helpful and should be able to answer that question pretty easily.

i dont think he's joking. you actually need to register to vote, etc in Ohio as well as prove financial independence to be considered an ohio resident.
CoffeeCzar 12-30-2009, 12:01 PM haha, very funny. anybody have any legit answers to my question
He's pretty much correct. The main thing is you need to show that you have enough income from your own sources to cover your expenses. This can be money in an account in your name you have saved up or money you get from student loans. Basically, you must prove that you are financially independent on paper. Most students will just use student loans and a little saved money to cover their first year cost of attendance since no one really has a sufficient income to cover it without borrowing.

One important thing to note is that you can't use any money you made out of state one year prior to matriculating. You can only use savings from at least one year before.
In other words if you are making money in a job this year outside of Ohio, you can't use it during the first year. You can always save it for the second year though after you get residency.

whoa, really? how do they keep track of this? what about using money that was given to you by parents/relatives (who don't live in OH) to help pay for tuition or living expenses?

You have to fill out a form detailing all your expenses for a year and those shouldn't exceed your OH income (i.e. your student loan+jobs/research grants). You can't accept money from relatives or parents because the idea is that you are self-sufficient. If you are still receiving money from them then you should still be a resident of the state that they are in as opposed to OH. They can still buy you gifts and plane tickets and what not i think. Of course they can give you cash under the table. But that is an honesty+integrity issue.
To check they'll ask to see bank statements to make sure you had the money a year prior to matriculation. Make sure your bank account is completely in your name and not shared because that could throw a monkey wrench in things.
Overall though it's a very easy process to go through and I wouldn't worry about it tooooo much.

The best way to avoid this might be to open an account at an Ohio bank, wouldn't you say? That way you don't have to close any joint accounts, but you'll have an account you can use for proving that you had the money. I guess the thing to figure out is what to do about the money from an ancient account that still has your parents' name on it. Can it be transferred to the new account?

Can you elaborate on this a little more? This doesn't quite make sense to me. If I have a full-time job right now, I can't use any money I've saved up while I'm a first-year med student in OH next year? I have to rely completely on loans, etc.?
But you just said they'll ask to see bank statements a year prior to matriculation to make sure we have the money. This seems contradictory - why would we have to prove to have the money if we can't spend any of it???

Yea...did anyone hear any scholarship news??
pppfcr 01-05-2010, 11:17 AM Does anyone remember what they said about the deferred-decision pending status at the interview? I remember they said something about movement in Dec/Jan? But, now, I can't remember if that was at another school? Any other information about the status would be greatly appreciated!!!! Would love to end up at OSU.

I don't remember too well either. I would like an answer to this as well.

I'm sorry! I realize my wording was not quite clear. You can use money that you had one year prior to matriculating. However if you made money outside of OH in the one year period before you matriculate, that money is not eligible to be used when determining your residency status.
From the website:
http://www.ureg.ohio-state.edu/ourweb/more//content/residency/FAQ_New.htm#22
What types of income sources are not eligible for helping me establish in-state residency?
The following are examples of income sources that would not be viewed as eligible from a residency standpoint:
Support from individuals who are not residents of Ohio
PLUS loan money because these types of loans are taken out by the student's parents
Personal loans (Loans not from a financial institution)
Loans with a co-borrower
Savings that have not been in an account in your name for at least one year prior to the beginning of your residency review period
Financial aid that required you to be a resident of another state in order to receive it
Credit card debt.

greenbeans08 01-06-2010, 12:04 PM Any scholarship news?
This might be a strange question, but what kind of scholarships are offered at OSU? Full tuition? Full ride?
Not that I'm expecting any, but it'd be helpful to know. I may withdraw soon :( I loved OSU, so it's going to be sad.

If I remember correctly, max amount of merit aid is in-state tuition (~$30000). Max amount for need based is ~$6000. Each year, the top 15% of the class gets some money. Otherwise, you're looking at private scholarships and federal grants. I'm quite smitten with OSU myself but I'm going to have to see how financial aid treats me.
I sent mine to the admissions office website. They'll place it in the file for you, so that should be fine.
This might be a stupid question, but what email address did you send it to?
There's no form or email on the Applicant Status page to send interest/update letters to. The only email address I can find is medicine@osu, which is the address they use to send us the Status Change emails. Should I just send it there? Anyone know?

The email from where they sent you the secondary application. I sent it to medicine@osu.edu.

i think it took maybe a week tops? it probably depends on if it's exam time (which it might not as it's just after break).
it's free, but i think it's nice to give them a gift card for their generosity.

I'd recommend just walking around the greater campus and getting a feel for the place. There's a pretty, open grassy area (I can't think of what it's called) and a pond that students apparently jump in after football games

And more snow-covered than grassy at the moment, as well.
As for things to do - are you looking for walking distance or will you have a rental car? If you want to get an overall view of the campus, you can hop on the Campus Bus (which is free) and ride it around campus. They all go in loops, so you can easily end up back where you started. I haven't been there yet, but the Main Library is newly renovated and supposed to be absolutely beautiful. The Rec facility is awesome, as well, and I think they might let you in to take a look at it. If you want to explore some neighborhoods, the Short North and Grandview are both nice areas with some unique shops/restaurants/etc. I highly recommend a stop at Jeni's Ice Cream (shops in both the short north and grandview) - Expensive but well worth it.

My friends in Columbus took me to Jeni's during my interview trip to OSU. For you lactose intolerant ppl out there, I highly recommend the pear sorbet...it has a touch of white wine in it and tastes REALLY good. :)
starl3tte 01-07-2010, 02:04 PM Also, check out the libraries! Especially Thompson library. From that library, you are a short walking distance away from High Street, I believe. There are lots of shops and restaurants on that street. We ate at Potbelly's Sandwiches...yum!

No rental car, so just walking distance. I go to a small undergrad so I hadn't even thought about campus buses, thanks for reminding me :) Sounds like a good way to get a feel for campus without lugging my stuff all day. The Enchanter 01-08-2010, 06:07 AM You scholarship people, mind if I ask when you interviewed?
Emergency! 01-08-2010, 07:41 AM Does anyone know if there is a cheaper way to get from campus to the airport than a cab?
Unfortunately, no. And the cab from the airport to campus is pretty pricey (it was $25 last I knew). If you are staying with a student host, they will often offer to pick you up at the airport, but no guarantee. After interviews, people often share a cab to the airport or sometimes one of the students will volunteer to drive people to the airport.
If you feel adventurous, you could try taking the city bus, but there isn't a route that runs from the airport to campus (there is one on the map, but it only runs during student breaks). The only other route that runs from the airport involves several transfers. The buses also tend to run only every 30-45 minutes or so, so with having to transfer a couple times, it could take you quite awhile to bus it across town. But - if you're interested - check out www.cota.com.

They may have changed it, but they used to want it sent in within two weeks. Please note: this is a fee charged by the Graduate College, not a fee assessed by the College of Medicine. I don't think you lose your spot or anything if you don't pay it by whatever deadline they gave you, but you might want to call the admissions office and ask them for a definitive answer. They understand that people may have multiple schools that they are trying to decide between.
