PROMPT

Healthcare reform is on the horizon. How does this affect your choice of a career in medicine?

Describe an obstacle you've overcome and how it has defined you.

Describe an extracurricular experience that you have had which will help you become a compassionate physician and explain why.

I'm unsure about my topic choice for the essay on the obstacle I faced. I was planning on writing about a athletics-related topic: I was the vball captain at my school when my coach started having family problems. Once he stopped showing up I found all the responsibility heaped on me. Luckily i was able to keep my head above water with ECs and schoolwork at the same time.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

sounds like it could be a decent topic. Really its hard to say because obstacles are going to be relative and personal to the individual. If you feel strongly about the obstacle you faced and you feel that you learned something positive from it, id say its a decent topic.

As far as i know the secondary isnt out yet though? Or did you get it?

I was just going off Stonybrook's questions from last year. If the question changes it happens to be broad enough to be adapted somewhere else.

Could someone please help clarify this prompt?
Is it asking whether HC reform affects your choice of SPECIALTY, or your decision to go into Medicine in general??

am i the only finding this healthcare reform question somewhat hard? I mean for one i dont know jack about what reforms we are looking at outside of a public option with inevitable physician pay cuts, but outside of that im lost. Also i mean reform really isnt going to change my decision to enter medicine, paycuts or not. Socialized medicine or w/e i still want to enter med school regardless....just so confused in every way by what they are looking for in this question.

i decided to go into medicine years before this obama even became president. do you think it will be bad if i say this health care reform had no affect of my decision since i decided already? and then list what i like about the reform and dislike?

also, how much are most of you people writing, i want to copy and paste one of my answers, it's just 1 long paragraph.

I think that if you want to take a "Medicine is Medicine" approach despite financing models, you could talk a bit about the German, French, Canadian, or UK systems. However, the US system will probably be very different from all of these, likely most similar to Canada with some sort of public option + lots of supplementary and alternative private options. You could also talk about how this has been an ongoing debate in US Healthcare, from the time that FDR decided against including universal coverage in the New Deal and for making it an employer-driven benefit that would essentially make up for lower wages. HMOs and the like haven't been around forever, neither have Medicaid & Medicare, and doctors have still practiced throughout the systematic changes. Good luck writing. :) I think all that they're looking for is some commitment to medicine beyond finances and some very basic understanding of the current policy context.

Except it's not an article. It's an editorial, written by the same guy who's trying to sell the plan. So, yeah, it's biased.

They mean no more than a page per question. I assume write this in a word processor and only utilize a page. There is no character limit in the boxes. I think my answer to the first was a little more than a page, but probably under with formatting depending on how they print things out there.

Did anyone else submit? The like 2 line text Thank you for submitting with no graphic or anything is a bit worrysome! Do they send confirm emails? I got payment confirm but still a little nervous :/

How did you guys approach the healthcare reform question from a politically neutral perspective? I'm not sure how/what to write. Discussing the reform is bound to invoke some political ideologies which I dont want to get into. And discussing a desire to go into medicine w/o mentioning the healthcare reform seems like evading the question. So what did you guys do?

You should be all done. Did you get that url with the tiny message that says something like "Thank you for submitting" or "Your application has been submitted"? If you clicked that button twice, they might actually now have two entries for you (depending upon how they designed their system). Seems like they're running on a pretty basic system, where all of your essays and such will just be dumped into a database when you click submit. So, no more clicking.:o You should get a complete email soon, and, if not, then I would just call them.

If I remember correctly the averages from MSAR (which I don't have in front of me so don't quote me on this) are around 31/32. Assuming you have pretty balanced scores (all 10s or something like that) I would definitly think you should be encouraged to apply especially if you are in state. Stonybrook seems to mostly accept in state, and really only accepts superstars from out of state.
Hope that helps

"A supplementary application fee of $100 has been imposed by the State University of New York. Please use our on-line mechanism for payment. A request for a fee waiver must be accompanied by a recommendation from the financial aid officer at your school, or a copy of your AMCAS fee waiver."

But after clicking on "submit", the window switched to a white screen that simply read "Your Supplementary Application has been submitted.
Thank You", with no indication of where I go to pay the fee...
Does this mean my amcas waiver was applied automatically, or that I have to search for the said "online mechanism" myself in order to pay?

If I remember correctly the averages from MSAR (which I don't have in front of me so don't quote me on this) are around 31/32. Assuming you have pretty balanced scores (all 10s or something like that) I would definitly think you should be encouraged to apply especially if you are in state. Stonybrook seems to mostly accept in state, and really only accepts superstars from out of state.
Hope that helps

Hardly call myself a superstar, and I'm about as far from NY as you can be (AZ). Guess sometimes, big things happen to little people.

Thanks! I am on for 10/30.

Does anyone know when it starts? They said they will email me a week prior about the schedule of the day but that it should be done by 2:30ish. I would like to know more than a week in advanced so I can plan transportation. I am contemplating whether to fly in the night before, sleep there, then fly back the next day or to just fly there early in the morning, and fly out later in the day.

JFK is about an hour flight from my home airport. (or should I fly into the local airport near campus?)

So many decisions.

Yeah, I'm still not sure when the day starts. I'm in NYC, but I was going to go up the evening before just to get more of a feel for the school. Definitely fly into JFK, LGA, or EWR (Newark) and then connect to the LIRR (Long Island Rail Road) to go out to Stony Brook. Don't know exactly how close the LIRR stop is to the school, but it seems easier than doing a regional airport thing. You can buy those tickets online and get them mailed to you, takes a bit, but you get a tiny discount, and it's only like 20 bucks or something round trip.

I guess if I went the JFK --> Air Tran --> Jamaica Station route then I would most definitely have to spend the night.

No problem. Isn't there a Stony Brook station? I forget now to where I got my tickets, but I can check it out. Newark to Amtrak to LIRR or LGA to M60 to LIRR would also do go you good, so don't feel so limited to JFK.

there is a stony brook stop on the lirr. it's the second to last stop on the port jefferson line. you normally need to transfer in hicksville, jamaica, or huntington. the stony brook station is basically right on campus--there are campus buses that run from the lirr and pass by the health sciences center. just ask the bus driver to tell you when you're passing the hsc, as it probably won't be readily apparent to you.

trains don't run too frequently to sb, however. you can also take the lirr into ronkonkoma (more frequent trains) and a cab to the hsc from there--the cab will be about $20, however...

hi guys, i'm a current first year at stonybrook. student host is definitely the best option for those interviewing. if you can't find a host in time, there's a holiday inn express (~5min taxi ride to school) that will give you discounted price of $75/night if you tell them you're interviewing here. good luck! (i'd better get something from them for saying this...)

by the way you'll have 2 interviews. 1st one will be with an faculty, then you may have another faculty interviewer or a student interviewer, depending on availability.

it's highly variable...you can also take the SB bus to the health sciences center. it takes about 10 minutes. just ask the driver if s/he stops at the hsc. those buses run pretty regularly...that's what i did when i interviewed.

Take that to mean that they are enjoying reading your application material so much that they haven't had the opportunity to actually send you the invitation;).

But seriously, the relative dates of completion are not necessarily determinant in relative dates of interview invitation. I've heard of people getting interview invites in March or April whereas the application was done in early summer.

No. As I said, my writing is pretty awkward. I've been working on it a lot lately, but I might be permanently disabled. My thoughts come to fast to write down and nothing goes on paper/into the computer the way I think of it.

Anyway: On the secondary application for Stony Brook they ask how much debt you have. Initially I was going to leave out student loans, but since those come up on a credit report they obviously count as real debt. I put down the honest answer: $50,000. This was all tuition, fees, food, and housing. (I did have jobs and I did get some scholarships for those interested in HOW I could get this much debt in public school)

So my thinking is that it seems like this is a bit discriminatory by income. If you're poor like me (but not impoverished), you obviously have a ton of debt. If you're rich, your parents pay for school and you have nothing to worry about. So if Stony Brook is using debt to assess whether they'll give a student an interview or not, they're essentially only accepting the rich.

Ok2Panic

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that's not how they're basing their interview decisions.... But a pretty simple way to figure out, does anyone who's posting in this thread that received an interview invite also have >0$ debt? I have a pretty strong hunch the answer is yes.

i honestly don't remember having that question. maybe its because i dont have debt so i didn't give it a second thought.
there are definitely people with more debt than you, and those with less. i would hope they wouldn't base a decision on how badly you are in debt. at the same time, you have to acknowledge the randomness of this application process and realize that it is still early! stay positive.

I don't know if anyone else has discussed this, but isn't it a bit odd they ask about your debt? It's a bit like asking, "are you rich so your parents paid for all your school?" I'm obviously doing a ton of speculation here, but that's the only reason I can imagine I haven't gotten an interview here yet. Well, that or my awful writing style.

wow i would really hope that's not something they use to decide who gets an interview. i have a little debt now (which will be paid off by the time med school starts) and havent gotten an interview, but i highly doubt thats any kind of factor in their decision making.

I guess some of us forgot about question 6 because the answer was pretty straightforward!

If you have any kind of debt it's not a straight forward question to answer. I have loans from about three different banks and the government. It takes a lot of shuffling through paper work and phone calls to figure out precisely what my debt it.

I'm going to pose the question again: has anyone with a decent amount of debt received an interview invite? If so, approximately what was your debt?

All it would take is one person who has more debt than me (who doesn't have spectacular stats) getting an interview to falsify my hypothesis.

hm softmed. i think you're making a mountain out of a mole. Do you really think a SUNY charging half the tuition of private medical schools is really targeting rich kids?... They want to know your debt levels as a possible question during your interview: "So you seem to have some debt from college, how have you thought about paying for medical school?""... but then what do I know.. not like med schools actually want to gauge your commitment to pursuing medicine or anything...

It's an irrelevant question. The government provides all the loans you need, and if that's not enough plenty of banks are willing to lend to future doctors. Even if none of that were true, you could join the military which would pay 100% of your medical tuition and expenses. It is absolutely none of their business how much debt you have or how you will pay for medical school.

This is not true in all circumstances. Banks will not provide loans to those who have defaulted, and this is true for both private loans and those subsidized by the government. And contrary to what you state, and especially in the present economy, banks are not as willing to throw money our way simply because we are going to be doctors. This is particularly true for those who already have an considerable amount of debt, as they are more likely to default.

Honestly, I think the question about outstanding debt has far too many people worrying unnecessarily. I highly doubt interview invites are based on this. Regardless, it's a question that everyone will have to address, whether it's on the secondary or after you have gained acceptance.

I'm pretty much the only one worried about it. The way I see it, it's like asking "how much money do you and your parents have in your bank accounts?"

How would you have to address how much debt you have after you get acceptance? I've never seen that on a FAFSA.

Hey, does anyone know the percent of applicants that Stonybrook interviews and accepts (In-state, since I hear thats the majority of those they take in?). Thanks.

As per US News & World Report 2010

Total: 3699 applied, 612 interviewed, 293 accepted, 124 enrolled
In-state: 2010 applied, 497 interviewed, 240 accepted, 107 enrolled
Out-of-state: 1689 applied, 115 interviewed, 53 accepted, 17 enrolled

There you go, you do the math. Good luck!

Shouldn't be on a FAFSA because the loans are guaranteed and the interest rate is fixed. But I haven't filled out one of those things in years so I'm not certain. You would almost surely be asked this question for private loans, should you choose to use them to supplement the federal loans. I presume that when the financial aid office has an estimate of your outstanding debt, they are better able to put together an accurate loan package that would cover the entire cost of attendance. Specifically, they will choose the best lenders for your private loans based on the amount of outstanding debt, among other things.

Admittedly, it's a very overt question for a secondary. But I wouldn't worry about it.

Where did you stay?

Holiday Inn Express (http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/ex/1/en/hotel/stony?EX;jsessionid=RUFULZILT3IWMCTGWAJCJBQKM0YBUI Y4&_franchisee=STONY) - It was a MUCH nicer hotel and room then I expected. I didn't have a car and the girl at the front desk was cool and showed me how to walk to Chili's/Quiznos/etc which is a few minutes down the street.

How far was it from the school?

7 Minutes. Go to the front desk and you can sign up for the FREE Holiday Inn shuttle which will bring you right to the school at the time you need and will drop you off right at the front entrance. I am very happy I asked about this as I didn't have to go threw the hassle of waiting for a taxi, etc.

How much did it cost?

I payed $138.89 for a good sized room with a huge bed and a flat screen TV and free WiFi.

How far in advance did you make reservations?

3 weeks prior. I scheduled it in case Ms. Acevedo could not locate me a student host. I would have canceled if she did, but I ended up needing it.

I received acceptance letter today and it asks for "letter stating intention to enroll at Stony Brook University School of Medicine" along with deposit in order to secure place. There is no standard reply form.

First, did everyone else receive this letter?

Also, do they really expect a letter of intent so early? I thought AMCAS rule was that we could hold multiple acceptances until May 15.

Hey, congrats! I was accepted today too. Very exciting. So, no worries, the "letter of intention to enroll" is just a letter to hold your spot. A medical school can't force you to attend, and it's absolutely fine to hold multiple spots pre-May 15 (May 1 for some). Call them if it would make you feel more at ease, but just send them a letter saying that you'd like them to hold the spot for you, along with the other documents that they ask for.

OOS - MCAT 34, non-trad, second cycle (1st for SB)

I was told by someone on the adcom that they absolutely do not discriminate based on residency.
I suppose it depends on the implications of the word "discriminate." A huge percentage of their students are from Long Island, another large chunk from New York state at large. I am sure, like all state schools, they have a target number of OOS students to pad the budget (can get in state tuition after 1 year if I remember correctly), but they need to be a large majority in-state to get their money from the government.

Or maybe our interviewers did not attend the most recent committee meeting because they were busy?

Or maybe they hate us.

I would frankly be slightly ****ed if I was flat out rejected here because I loved the school and had extremely positive interviews. If "That was a masterful interview! You would be a perfect fit for our school" is followed by a small rejection envelope in the mail anytime soon, I'll probably enter a lifelong depression, break up with my girlfriend, and live in a dirty house with multiple cats for the rest of my life.

wow, I definitely should not have checked here...and now I have the jitters. I was interviewed 9/22 and still haven't heard anything. However, this is what my interviewer told me: "Post interview it's a coin flip. You basically have a 50/50 chance. 20% are immediately accepted, 20% are immediately rejected, and the remaining 60% are waitlisted. About half of those on the wait list eventually get in."

At the interview they said it takes about 6-8 weeks. Those rejected will get a small letter, those accepted will get an express mail envelope. Those waitlisted will get an email.

Everyday that I check the mail, I hold my breath dreading the small envelope. I sigh a sigh of relief when I get through all the small envelopes in my mailbox and realize none of them were from Stonybrook.

your choice of words... coin flip... is that almost to say that when it comes down to it, quality of application / quality of interviewed are just obscured, and those in the top 50 just aren't significantly different than those in the lower 50? Or that from your perspective, where you are sitting in the interview chair, it's a coin flip?

which gets me to thinking, and I should probably post this in the general forum, how much does the interview really matter? I know that the smart answer is to say that it varies by school. but my hunch is that it's absolutely critical. This is because, applicatants are just so similar on so many characteristics, and could widely vary on interview performance. So it can be used as a differentiating factor.

Also, I feel that they would use it to qualify your application. He writes well but can't speak well, he knows this or that about that extra curricular, showing that he really was committed.

Problem is, we are giving them a 40 page AAMCAS, 2 hour long interviews, and a long list of grades. They then try to internalize it all and come up with a 'holistic' interpretation of the students credentials. Problem is, that task is essentially cognitively intractable... making the decisions more or less random and making the only solution on the applicants part to apply widely.

It's actually not my choice of words, it was the interviewers words. I paraphrased what he said there in quotes, but he did specifically use the words "coin toss" referring to one's odds of getting in after sitting in the interview chair. But yes, the process does seem rather arbitraty to an observer who never sits in on the admissions committee's meetings.

yea, waitlisted today too...

But hey, it could be worse! We weren't rejected! I don't hear any fat ladies.

But my optimism aside, does anyone know what the percentages of people accepted off the waitlist are? I know it varies from year to year, yada yada yada, and depends on whether those lucky accepted candidates matriculate somewhere else. Yet I imagine last year's numbers will be similar to this year's numbers, and here's why:

SB's tuition is hands down great value for the education. This year's economic outlook is rather similar to last year's economic outlook. In good years, students accepted to Einstein, NYU, Sinai, etc., and SB, probably wouldn't think twice about obtaining the financing to attend the above mentioned private schools. However, in an economy such as this one, those applicants who usually end up attending other schools and make SB's waitlist move...might just pick SB for it's great value.

That's just my 2 cents, for what it's worth. Please feel free to prove me wrong. In fact, I really hope I'm wrong.

I really doubt the economy will really be affecting as many students as most think, unless the student loan market dries up.

People like big names too much and honestly little has changed from two or three years ago unless you have a mortgage or have been on your own for a while (or you were really depending on your parents to pay for your MD and THEY make a decision for you...).

Now if lenders stop giving MD program student loans...

That would be a different story.

So I'd like to note that I received an interview invite from Stony Brook this afternoon. Apparently they don't factor debt into their interview invite/acceptance equation.

My hypothesis has successfully been falsified.

They do give out a lot of waitlists it seems.... so I take it that this is a school that is continuously waitlisting people, rather than say giving out lots of acceptances at the beginning, then waitlisting everyone else afterwords?

I'm interviewing jan 5, so in a way this makes me feel good, because it seems as though I will have a chance at an outright acceptance. Though I do sympathize with you guys that got waitlisted straight away... that does suck...

I was told the numbers for last year are 620 interviewed and 300 accepted (including outright and off waitlist). I'm not sure how that stacks up among the other SUNYs and other state schools.

Also, keep in mind a few factors 1) There are 4 SUNYs and many people get accepted to all 4. Also, each one has a slightly different tuition, with about an 8K difference from cheapest to priciest for in state. So even if people opt for a state school they may not pick SB and the waitlist will move. 2) SB isn't in a big city so people may still choose Downstate over SB.

Has anyone had a good faculty interview but an ehh student interview and still gotten in?

i interviewed at SB in March, and was interviewing for open spots in the class. in fact, four people from my interview day are now in my class...so it seems unlikely that you would be interviewing for the WL in january...

awesome, good to know. i just ask because some schools take the strategy of: accept as many people as soon as possible, then start WLing people.

though it seems that public schools tend not to take that approach. the schools with that approach seem to be the privates that think everyone thinks they are a safety.
