I'm trying to land a clerkship in the Ireland or UK for my fourth year in April or May 2010. My school doesn't have any established relationships in the UK or Ireland, nor will it help set things up, but it will pay for 2/3rd the cost to go oversees.

I have contacted atleast 10 schools in the UK and Ireland about setting up a clerkship, with no luck. Mostly due to having no openings at that time of the year.

I'm now starting to think I am going at this the wrong way, and instead of trying to set something up through the medical schools, I should look to set something up with a community physician.

I don't know that much about the medical culture, and don't know what would work and what wouldn't. However, if anyone has ANY ideas on how I can make a UK or Ireland clerkship happen I would GREAATTLY appreciate it. The rotaiton type really doesn't matter so much--at this point I've stopped being picky!

MUCH thanks!

The medical school I study at do take elective students (http://www.ucl.ac.uk/medicalschool/electives/) and when I did my neurology rotation, there were numerous elective students (mainly from Germany) who had arranged their placement directly through the Institute of Neurology (http://www.ion.ucl.ac.uk/) rather than through the Medical School.

Hope this helps

did you happen to find any rotations? I am looking for a rotation in London for April/May of 2010. If you get any information would you mind sending to me? Unfortunatly I would not be able to do Neurology elective b/c I am going into Neuro and have maxed out my Neurology electives. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Shame you won't be able to visit The National, it's a really interesting place. If you are dead set on Neurology, could try Neuro-Opthalmology at Moorfields/Institue of Opthalmology (if that wouldn't be classified as Neurology) - http://www.moorfields.nhs.uk/Home and http://www.ucl.ac.uk/ioo/.

I don't really know much about the other London Medical School but there have been elective students at both UCH (http://www.uclh.nhs.uk/) and the Free (http://www.royalfree.nhs.uk/).

Might be worth e-mailing the electives office (http://www.ucl.ac.uk/medicalschool/electives/electives-at-ucl/) to see what they may be able to offer.

You could try email the consultants of the hospitals... I tried and got a place for this year in Dublin (st James Hospital).
In this site (http://www.medicstravel.co.uk/CountryHospitals/Europe/ireland.htm) you can find the website of some hospitals in Ireland.
and in this (http://www.stjames.ie/Departments/ConsultantsA-Z/)site you can find a list of consultants in St James hospital and their respectives emails and phone numbers.

Hope it helps...
