What is a hamartoma? I know it is benign but then what is a hamartomatous polyp?

I believe a hamartoma is just a growth of local tissue. The word hamartoma is used to separate it from a "heterotopia" which is a growth of tissue in a place it doesn't belong.

Peutz-Jeghers. :D

Other than that, I like perilou's explanation. My only association with hamartoma is "coin-shaped cartilage lung lesion in a young person."

i remember hearing goljan say that a hamartoma is an overgrowth of local/native tissue (peutz-jeghers)

and a heterotopic rest is stuff at where it's not suppose to be (gastric stuff in mickel's diverticulum)
