View Full Version : is this DAT score competitive?
dentalmon 06-11-2009, 02:43 PM took the DAT a month ago and I scored
aa- 21
ts- 23
pat- 20
bio- 22
gc- 23
oc- 22
Rc-21
math- 17:(
my gpa is around 3.4.. but graduated in Dec. 07 and currently back to school in the summer for pos-bac. I work as a dental lab tech and have more than 150 hrs of shadowing experience in a dental office.
I originally thought my scores were pretty good, but i' m seeing more and more people with 25s and 24s on their DAT.. do you guys think my score, gpa, and etc is going to get me in somewhere??... and where should i apply to?
thank you very much.
allstardentist 06-11-2009, 02:55 PM they are good. you will def get in somewhere
4thMolar 06-11-2009, 03:08 PM You're fine with your GPA and DAT score. A 17 on QR isn't too bad...it's the section a lot of students struggle with, and adcoms have told me they don't care too much for that section.
nze82 06-11-2009, 03:10 PM You'll be more than OK with these scores.

Where exactly are you seeing people with 24s and 25s? Pulling off an AA of 25 isn't an easy task. Of course, I'm sure there are people who will still pull of these kind of scores, but that doesn't mean AA of 25 is the norm for all applicants.
Besides, students on SDN don't represent the entire applicant pool. Most people on this forum are students at the higher end of the spectrum. Your scores are definitely above average, and you should be happy about that!
THINKOFMYFUTURE 06-12-2009, 06:19 PM if u notice, most ppl who post that have any clue r the ones with 22+ . if i had anything less why the hell wud u post em for unless to get laughed at or pitied at. its so funny 80% of these topics are like dat ; so they can feed ones ego

Not quite, I look at these DAT breakdowns religiously! I have 2 weeks to go and I'm freaked out. hearing success stories each day helps me out a little. Plus I like to encourage people

In 2007 the frequency of 24 was 20, 25-5 and 27-1 out of 8897 who took the DAT. Even if the numbers doubled for 2008 and 2009 that still would not amount to a heck of a lot of applicants with those scores.

Jongho Yoon 06-13-2009, 09:12 AM I have a question. What percentages of the total applicants enter the dental school approximately? When I check on predents, it seems like only 5% get accepted.

I just see a lot of people posting 22, 23, 24, 25s on their DAT on predents.com.. and even saw quite a few ppl got like 30s on certain sections.(i didnt know that was possible!). so when i looked at those numbers compared to mine.. its just makes me worried that the competition went up that high... b/c like I know 4 ,5 years ago, people were being accepted with 17s :eek:or so.. but it seems like go up a pt or two everyyear.. so.. thats the reason why i asked..:confused:

The competition has definitely gotten more intense. But your scores are still very competitive. Don't worry!
People tend to post their scores if they're very high, which is why you see scores of 20+ more often than scores of below 19. This, however, does not mean that the majority of applicants are scoring 20+ on their exam. It simply means that we don't see those with less competitive score.

.. i hope you are right.. at least i hope that I would get more interviews this year from the improved scores...b/c i was rejected last year w/ a 18/19 for like 16 schools w/ only 1 interview.:thumbdown:thumbdown... i certainly dont want to have to deal w/ that again..
and thank you for your advice. . :)..

No worries! I had the same situation last year. I got only two interviews with scores of 19,20,19 and the other 7 schools I applied to all rejected me:laugh:
Hopefully, things will work out better this year!:xf:

The qr is apparently stuck in gear. This year's score bumped you from 74.2 to 97.6.

Wow! you didn't get in w/ 19 20 19? Did you think that you were rejected last year b/c of your DAT scores?.. see! That's what i'm talking about!.. if your score didnt get you in last year, i just can't imagine how the numbers will jump even higher for this year.. did you retake your DAT ?
hsia2 06-14-2009, 11:46 PM this is exactly what I am so scared about
my GPA is 3.3, last 3 years= 3.6, I did 5 year degree, Cell biology major
My dat
PA21
QR21
RC20
Biol 23
GC 22
OC 23
TS 22
AA 22
I just cannot imagine someone with 3.87 GPA, DAT 19~20 didn't even get accepted by one school
There seems to be nothing we can do for people who have low GPAs..
sigh, i just don't even think with 22/22 DAT would even gurantee us an acceptance...
I serioulsy just hope USC accepts me...
DoctaWalnuts 06-15-2009, 07:44 AM If I were to get a lower score (17) I would love for it to be only in QR, I mean..everyone says this is hard and the least important. I think you are competitive.
