Didn't see a '09-'10 thread for MSU, so I thought I would start one. This thread is for pre-DO students interested in attending MSU-COM.

One essay question, set to be one-page in length with font no smaller than 10pt.

I hadn't even considered applying to MSU, as I so desperately want to get out of this state. While working on my PS, I've realized a lot about what sort of physician I want to be, and MSU seems to be the best fit. And in-state tuition doesn't hurt, hah.

But it looks like I'm shooting myself in the foot by taking the July 31st MCAT :(

The testing center on MSU's campus, haha. At least it will be a short walk. I'm a student here.

Edit: I should add that my adviser told me to call MSUCOM and ask if that was too late to be taking it. I called, and whoever answered said it'd be okay. But now I look at the website and get uneasy :(

Edit 2: Also, not entirely sure why anyone OOS would apply here. Over $60,000 A YEAR?!

Definitely a good idea, was it Terri? She is an excellent advisor and has helped me greatly throughout my application processes.

MSU is my number one choice too, I haven't received the secondary yet but it is definitely a good idea to start organization your volunteer work and counting the hours because you will have to present that information.

I have been looking to apply to MSU-COM, but I am a little confused when I see an allopathic school on the same campus that is a college of "Human Medicine". How/why is this the case @ MSU? The college of Human Medicine (M.D.) seems to hold more osteopathic values than most allopathic schools.... can someone explain? Thanks.

Yes I met with Terri. She was nice, altough she told me I do not have a great chance and I'm better off waiting a year. lol

It is a little weird, isn't it? I think the MD school was established earlier, and the DO school was creating with real emphasis on educating primary care physicians who will work in Michigan. I think it's worked, as Michigan is a great state for DOs.

At least in East Lansing, many of the classes are taught to both MD and DO students at once

Yup - for 1st year, almost all of our classes are together, in Conrad Hall. (COM does anatomy in the summer, and CHM does it in the fall). Although with new campuses sprouting up everywhere, I don't know how that changes stuff. But, I think COM is older? CHM started in 1964, anyway.

I didn't have time to check when I posted earlier. According to the website, MSUCOM was founded in 1969.

I'm having a hard time figuring out who I'd want to write my letters, assuming I get that far in the application process.

Okay - so, not an appreciable difference, really. Interesting!
It really isn't weird that we take 1st year basic sciences together - there's chances to meet more friends. Though it gets really crowded in the fall, before everyone stops going to lecture...

Sent out my two copies of the supplemental application today and $85 processing fee. My committee letter has been mailed to MSU, so now I have to wait on my second evaluation form--should be done by next week.

This was the most boring secondary application (next to Nova's).

My status finally shows that my supplemental application has been received, except for the "Osteopathic Interest Evaluation." Is this the short survey we had to fill out with check boxes? I know I filled that out twice and put both copies in the envelope.

My Evaluation forms will be mailed by the end of this week.

The same thing happened to me. I had all my stuff there for a few weeks and it showed "Y" next to everything except my evaluations. So I kept checking every couple of days to see if my evaluations had arrived and in doing so, I saw that the "Disciplinary Statement" had changed to "N." So I called them up and they said that they were in the process of switching over to a new system and it had some glitches. So, if you know you sent it, my bet is that they got it and it's just their computer messing up. You might want to call just to make sure, however. To answer your question, yes the "Osteopathic Interest Survey" was the one with the check boxes :)

The CHM application asks a similar question and it says to not use any experience already in the application somewhere...I realize COM is a different school, but I would imagine you wouldn't want to use the same experience. If it were me, I would talk about something else.

Is this your official, verified AACOMAS GPA?? If so, there's probably nothing you can do for this cycle since MSU likes folks to have everything in before September for the best chance of acceptance. I think the only way they'd likely send you a secondary is if you were to update them of a summer course that you've completed that would likely push your GPA over 2.7. If you don't get in anywhere this year, I would suggest retaking a bunch of courses for next year if you have the time to do so to get that GPA up over 3.0. What's your MCAT? If that's really good, maybe they'll forgive you for being 0.02 points away from meeting the minimum.

This application took the longest to become complete due to the evaluation forms, and MSU will not budge on any exceptions.

"Pay special attention to the evaluation form instructions. We require two completed forms, per the instructions. We do not waive this requirement. If you are unable to find two individuals to complete forms for you, you will be unable to complete your MSUCOM application."

I am a re-applicant this year because I was waitlisted and later denied at MSU-COM for the 2009 cycle. MSU-COM had all my required documents in by August 5th. I met with the adviser, and I strengthened everything weak in my application besides my lower-end MCAT of 24.

How long should I expect to hear back? I didn't hear back until March last year, but I didn't finish my app until October either. I am very nervous because this is the only school I wish to go to.

Don't worry about the lower MCAT, they seem to be able to look past an MCAT score and evaluate applicants as a whole. So, if you have a strong application otherwise, just sit back and wait for the good news (especially considering you got waitlisted last year, and have since improved your application).

Yes, MSUCOM doesn't hold a lot of weight with the MCAT. As long as you have gotten an 8 or better in each of the categories. I have been told that volunteer work and science GPA is what they consider to be most important. But hey, I am in the same position as you, I was waitlisted last year and I am hoping to get in this year with improvements to my application!

There was a post about OOS tuition for MSU and supposedly if an OOS attends the school gives them a number of grants that knock the tuition down somewhat.

This may not be true but would be interesting if a current OOS MSU student could post on here about it. It wouldnt surprise me since many times grant money is given by the federal governement, so the school charges huge OOS tuition because it knows it will get its money anyway, even if a lot is not from the student.

But on my primary, I indicated that I planned on retaking the MCAT, which I did, but I dont want to release my latest scores to aacomas. Will MSU-COM wait for these scores or go along with my old ones, which meet their cutoffs?

bump

AACOMAS is different from AMCAS where as if you take an MCAT, AMCAS automatically gets it. AACOMAS must be forwarded the score from AAMC. So if you bombed your retake, just don't talk about it. If asked be like "I don't wish to include my MCAT score retake in my evulation as a potential medical school candidate."

This was based on last year's thread when posts began popping up on Sept 3rd--the first Wednesday in September. There were a substantial number of posts detailing acceptances.

September 2nd is the tentative date in my mind.

Of course, you could be right and this year is going to take longer because of the holiday being so late.

I was also complete on August 5th. All of my materials were in at the end of July, but one of my evaluators did not sign the last page. I had to mail the evaluator a new page and, in turn, have them mail it to MSU-COM.

Pretty relieved it all got there, though...

Right, they generally use the first Tuesday in september to get situated and only start reviewing the 2nd week. Although they still have not received one of my evaluators letters so I kind of like that. I want to have everything in before they start reviewing!

Yeah, I'm throwing this secondary in the trash mainly b/c of these eval forms. I have 5 LOR's sitting in my file and can't use any of them, I don't feel like going back to my writers and asking them to fill more paper work out. Good luck to the rest of you.

For their secondary where we record all of our hours doing extracurricular/volunteering....where do i put teaching assistant at a university and research? I put if under extracurricular activities first...but then saw the "academic activities" section. But under THAT section, it says to include research poster presentations, any fellowships etc. I didn't have any publications or presentations...i just assisted graduate students with research. Where should that go then?

Put it under the academic activities at the very bottom. I was in the same situation. Now if you started getting paid to work in the lab, put that time frame in the work part obviously.

this school is such a ripoff for OOSers!

I think this school would have been a good fit for me, too. in terms of what their adcom looks for, I am like the perfect candidate, no joke hehe.

however, it's going to be a no go for me because of...

1) ridiculous tuition
2) you can't become an MI resident until after 3 years, so you're paying that ridic tuition the entire time
3) their evaluation forms on the secondary are a pain in the ass

good bye, MSU. my advice to you is to standardize your admissions because, as of now, you are losing many great applicants!

Ya that is a pretty ignorant and offensive comment rockbuster, I would have to say everyone has their reasons for choosing whatever school they may want to go to. Just because you have a certain view on what it means to go to MSUCOM and what it means to be a DO doesn't mean others have the same view. Remember, MSUCOM is a great school that is ranked in the top 5% of schools (MD and DO) for primary care. Among other things, that matters, regardless of OOS tuition or not.

So this is kind of a random question, and sorry if it has already been addressed, but do a lot of people apply to both the osteopathic and allopathic schools at MSU? I want to apply to both, as I am a Michigan resident, but I don't want to hurt my chances of getting in to either. I am hoping that they wouldn't even know if I apply to both the MD and DO school...

Well, I am trying to write my personal essay for MSU-COM... I thought about touching upon a bad experience I had shadowing a DO physician- but then I remembered that the physician went to MSU-COM!

So I was wondering if I should still mention the experience in the essay? I'm kind of hesitant that they'll be less than happy that one of their own alumni provided such a bad example. He's kind of well known around MSU, or so he tells me.

Is it necessary to drop the physician's name? If you put down multiple shadowing/volunteer experiences where you engaged with a doctor, then it would be a guess as to who it really is.

I would say that it is worth it because I know people that have turned in the secondary in october and still got in. The thing with MSUCOM is they like to finish their class early by meeting every week on Tuesday to review applicants. It use to be common for MSUCOM to fill the class by December, but now that the class size has expanded to 300 students it takes them longer. Definitely try to get it in ASAP though!

Toledo Medical School= a certain PHD professor back stabbed me in the interview asked me all these weird questions
kept making counter points about everything I say
I knew I was screwed
so then decision day for the admissions committee
she told the Dean of the Medical school
that I was a liar
and fraudulent
said that "I put my legs on the table" when I spoke to her
made up all this bullcrap about me
I got rejected, my stats were better than Toledo by a long shot...

The sad part was that after all the thank you letters I wrote, and ***** kissing I did, it was all undone because some jag PHD didn't like my demeanor? I mean if this is a way of letting under qualified applicants accepted, then it sure as heck works.

Maybe if you posted the entire story behind my post, instead of selectively posting a random B.S. tidbit, you will see that I called out MSU-COM because they required ridiculous(yes I still think they are ridiculous) pre-reqs which most med schools don't require aka Genetics, biochem, etc... (http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?p=6470304#post6470304)

And thanks for conveying my strong interest in D.O. schools because that example above is precisely why I didn't apply M.D. after taking the MCAT(The Toledo program which I applied to was called Medstart, where a prospective candidate can be accepted to Toldeo's Medical School without an MCAT score).

And BTW douchebag, I am not a reapplicant. I got accepted in 10 days after submitting my secondary to MSU, without an interview. Perhaps because I had a 3.9 GPA(3.93 BCPM), 29 MCAT and Mother Theresa like Extra-curricular Activities which would have made me more than competitive for most MD schools let alone DO schools.

But I am surprised that you received an acceptance during the first week of september because they usually only start reviewing applications the second week. Wow you're really classy with all the name calling. A little touchy I guess. I'm was asking why you posted MSUCOM as a school you wouldn't apply to again. That's what the heading of the thread was called. I am not here to argue with you, it looks like you would win since you're such a nasty, mean person. Good luck to you!!

Nothing personal against you really, it was unfortunately you who started off on the wrong foot. I never applied to MSU-COM twice, it was a school I didn't really look into because of their "distinct" LOR forms, and tons of extra classes which they required(same reasons why a lot of people in this thread have complained about).

I have submitted the "Past or Pending Disciplinary Action Statement," but I did not see any other forms about criminal history in the secondary app.

I personally am choosing EL as my top choice. I like the fact that students from COM and CHM take many of the same classes together during the 1st two years. It'll be great to be on the main MSU campus with access to all of the other resources offered there. I just feel that I'll be able to get the most out of the school in EL - but it's totally my personal choice. I also hope to go to some football/basketball games if I ever get the chance to break away from studying!

I definitely agree with you on that... That's why my decision is so tough. Weighing the option of living with a Wayne med student who I've known since middle school in a great place just minutes away from DMC... Or the former option, which I like bc of your reasons.

Anatomy is a prosection lab, which means that we do not dissect cadavers in ANTR 551. However, after successfully completing anatomy you can take prosection as an elective where you will dissect the new bodies for the lab.

And you still have to send transcripts when you finish before you matriculation and you should still do well. They will not accept any grade lower than a C for pre-requisite courses. For non-required courses I'm not sure of a grade policy, but it will certainly look bad if you do not perform well the semester before school starts!

davenp73
09-21-2009, 04:55 PM
so there are no interviews at this school? do they accept mostly in state students?

MSUCOM only holds interviews for applicants they are on the fence about. They stopped interviewing all applicants when they realized that they were accepting nearly everyone who interviewed. This is the reason for the lengthy seconday, because they need a way to get to know you without actually meeting you at the interview!

I saw a lot of people commenting that they weren't applying to MSUCOM becaues of the high OOS tuition.
I'm a first year at the school right now and can tell you that a lot of OOSers recieve scholarships and what not that pretty much bring down tuition to the same rate as the in state folk. Dont know exact numbers and I'm not going to venture to guess. If you are really interested in this school (and you should be) and you feel like the tuition is too high, speak with an admissions rep and ask them how many OOSers get the scholarships.

I am living in Detroit right now, and I toured the campus today. It's beautiful inside, state-of-the-art, and brand new as you all know. HOWEVER, just bc you go to MSUCOM-Detroit does not mean you will be placed in Detroit for clerkships. It's based on a lottery so there are equal chances of landing in Detroit for anyone at any campus in our 3rd year.

I loved everyone I met at the DMC campus, and I believe I will be choosing it too. As much as I wanted the college life, I'm here to get on my grind, and I do think the smaller classrooms and nicer facilities will eventually be better for my career.

I don't think you get any clinical exposure at the dmc, Im almost certain that the DMC in midtown detroit is off limits to MSU students unless you are taking an elective or volunteering. All your clinical rotations are done at 20 other sites, none of which include the DMC. Unless something has changed since last year.

Since AACOMAS sucks at releasing scores, I would fax them in right away. Call to confirm to make sure they got them. I knew someone who faxed their score into the admissions office this cycle and was accepted soon after.

I visited here and everyone was really, really nice. I have more questions that maybe a current student can help with.

1. Do students have problems pulling up documents for class with a mac?
2. Will they send a list of immunizations we need and when?
3. How likely is it that you will get your first choice for the site of your rotations?

Thanks!!

1. You shouldn't have any trouble with a Mac other than you will need to run Windows in order to increase the playback speed of the Mediasite recorded lectures. I did this by getting a program called VMWare Fusions. Buy it at the MSU Computer store, it will be cheaper than getting it at a regular store.

2. Yes.

3. I think it is fairly likely, but there is always a lot of drama during Base Hospital Selection Time and Lottery Day.

Just accepted to MSU COM :)

I'm hoping a few students currently attending MSU could answer a few questions for me.

How does everyone like the Macomb Campus? Do you feel like you are getting the same education as the students at the EL campus? How often do you see the professors?

Can some 3rd and 4th years comment on rotations? Does the school help you much during these years?

Thanks in advance for your help. And for those of you waiting for an acceptance at MSU I hope it comes soon. Hang in there! :)

Hey guys, congrats to all those getting accepted!

I am a 1st year @ the Macomb campus and we took anatomy all summer @ DMC.. if you have ANY questions about COM in general, or the SE MI sites please feel free to contact me! I would love to answer your questions and help with information about the campuses. The education is the exact same, but there are definitely positives and negative to each campus.

To those thinking that you will get extra clinical exposure @ DMC, you won't. The opportunities are the same as all the other campuses. Just so you know. And as of right now, the only DMC facility that COM has ties with is Sinai-Grace so there are currently no rotations @ Receiving, children's, harper/hutzel, etc. Many students are hoping that changes, but right now there isn't talk about it.

Once again, any questions or need of input, please contact me! Good luck too all you future com'ers!:)

Yeah they are absolutely no help whenever I call them to check to see if my file has even been reviewed. Welp sadly enough I guess all we can do is wait, unless someone is able to get more out of an admissions councilor.

Does anyone know how they factor in the competitiveness of where people do their undergrad? I see people getting acceptance letters saying they have good GPAs of 3.7, 3.8 etc. but then average MCAT scores like 25.

I have a 3.2 GPA from Michigan and a 29 MCAT with lots of research and volunteer work but still haven't heard back. The reason this kind of bothers me is because I took my physics classes at GVSU and the amount of work I had to put in to get an A there would have barely gotten me a C in one of my science classes at Michigan.

Volunteer hours are huge with MSUCOM. I was waitlisted last year, so I came in and talked with one of the counselors. She told me that volunteering hours were weighted something like 40% of the application. When I filled out the activities form, I didn't realize that I could add an activity for several categories and missed out on several valuable volunteering hours. I also didn't think about clubs and organizations when I was spending time to help other people. For instance, with MSU Breakdance Club, I spent a good amount of time teaching people and performing for shows and benefits. That all counts.

This time around, I didn't make any drastic change to my application. I just applied MUCH earlier and added all those missing volunteer hours. Turned my secondary in and got an acceptance two weeks later. Just something to consider for those still waiting... Stats: 27N, 3.51 sci/3.48 non-sci

I have heard that the mcat is not weighted very heavily by MSUCOM, so even if you have a great mcat is doesn't help you that much. They are more interested in your gpa, VOLUNTEER work, and healthcare experience. I have heard some other students from private schools in Michigan say their gpa is not accurate since their institution had a more difficult curriculum. I have taken classes at a couple different colleges and I think I would do the same no matter where I went. I never let my grades slip. I did whatever I needed to get a good grade like meeting with professors or getting a tutor.

I don't mean to be discouraging to all of you who are still waiting to here back, but I DON'T think it's taking the Admissions Office long to make decisions about students they're sure about. I wasn't complete until 10/6 and I was offered admission on 10/21 (this week). My stats are:
3.35 GPA
3.1ish science GPA
30R MCAT
thousands of combined health care employment/volunteer hours (much more MD experience than DO experience too)
zero research experience
*My personal statement/essays were pretty kickass in my opinion, so that probably helped.

And regarding where you went to school - I go to Grand Valley, so I don't think it's going to hurt you for taking physics here. I know it's no U of M, but GVSU is still a good school.
Hope you all hear back soon!

Well what I'd like to know is to what extent do admissions give somebody 'brownie' points for going to a competitive school?

Based off my experiences taking classes at multiple schools and from what other people have told me, a B/B+ student at Michigan is more on the caliber of an A-/A student at less competitive colleges. Do they even give any consideration to this sort of thing? It seems more logical to me that schools should place more weight on MCAT scores since that's the only way to objectively compare the academic performance of students.

Dude face it. Your probably not going to get any "brownie" points. The admissions committees don't standardize thousands of GPA's. Your best hope is to apply to schools that put more weight on the MCAT. Best of luck to ya. Another reason not to go to Michigan though :p

I don't know if this will help the conversation about stats, but i feel i should share mine considering I'm out of state:

Undergrad at Cornell University
Overall GPA 3.41
Science GPA 3.65
MCAT 27N

I graduated in 2008. Currently work in clinical research and have about 150 volunteer hours. I finished my application in early August and got my acceptance two weeks ago. Furthermore, I did three years at a community college where i completed all of my pre med requirements. I transferred credits into Cornell as a Biological science major. It seems, considering im OOS, that a reputable school does help your cause. If i applied from a less reputable school in new york i doubt i would have gotten in. But who knows. Anyway, i thought this would help. if anyone wants to know anything else about my stats or whatever feel free to ask.

Also, for those who are going to E. Lansing, which is where I think I want to go, have you considered your living situations yet?

Hello,

I was wondering if any of you were placed on hold originally for your pending MCAT scores, and when you did receive your new MCAT scores, did you have to contact MSUCOM? I've sent my score to AACOMAS two and a half weeks ago, and I haven't heard from admissions. I am very tempted to maybe e-mail admissions to let them know that my new MCAT has been released?

Also, do you guys think that my application is considered "late" or has lowered chances because it's October/ almost November already? I was originally complete in August but was put in hold for my new MCAT scores.

Stats: 3.51 science, 3.8 non-science, 28O MCAT, moderate volunteer/research.

I haven't heard from any schools, so I've been in agony the past few weeks! heh Thanks for the help! :)

Fujian, I know what you mean. I too am a UofM grad, graduated 2005. I attended grad school and received a 3.9 with the same amount of work I put in at UofM. Different schools DEFINITELY have different academic environments. Unfortunately most college grads think that their program or course of study was "hard" but because they worked hard, they got good grades. People KNOW you worked hard, you graduated from an awesome university!

While there may not be any "brownie" points in life, the skills that you learned at UofM will make you successful in life. MSU will see this. They know the academic rigor at UofM. They will take it into consideration when reviewing your application. What will determine your acceptance is what you did with your acquired skills. UofM offers TONS of opportunities to get involved. What clubs were you in? Pre Med club? Did you participate in study groups? Study abroad? Did you volunteer at the hospital? Work at the hospital? Involved in Dance Marathon? Member of a sorority/fraternity - don't forget about your philanthropy!! ALL of this should be on your application.

As an acceptee to MSUCOM, my best advice is to get your material in EARLY. I applied twice. The first time I did not submit my secondary until September; I did not get in. The second time I submitted my secondary in July; I was accepted in September. Not a whole lot changed on my app., just the timing of when it was submitted. Stop putting all the emphasis on MCAT scores, gpa's, what school you went to, etc. Be organized, be driven (call!! no matter how scared you are), be EARLY! Don't accept (or anticipate) failure.

INCORRECT-- I am a student @ a satellite campus and we have the same access to EVERYTHING!! Both electives AND clinical opportunities. Do not say things like that unless you are a current student and know that it is actually true.

I highly encourage those accepted to check out the satellite campuses and TALK TO CURRENT STUDENTS at all 3!! There are positives and negatives that are unique to each campus!

Do you happen to know some of the positives/negatives for each campus?

KimBo,

Seeing your post is very relieving. In fact, almost all those extracurriculars you mentioned I have participated in. I have done Dance Marathon, alternative spring break, volunteered a lot with the Red Cross, been an Orgo study group leader, I'm in a fraternity, did research abroad for two months/lived with a host family, and I have been a research assistant in one of the labs at the med school here for a while now...Those are a lot of the big ones.

On the other hand, it's obvious that everybody applying to med school (especially MSUCOM) has lots of experience to put on their application. And of course it's not fair to say somebody with a 4.0 at any other institution could not have done the same at UofM. But being involved in all these activities makes it that much harder to get a high GPA here. Also, I am majoring in economics which is a really tough program...especially when you combine it with all the science classes.

Like you said, although Michigan requires one to work very very hard, I have benefited from more personal growth that this incredibly diverse campus offers than I would have ever imagined. Still...it's difficult not to wonder at times if I'd be better off had I forgone the 'Michigan difference.'

...But from your experience do you think all of these factors along with my extra curricular experiences will show for something?

AACOMAS takes an eternity to release anything. Call the admissions office to make sure they recieved your latest score. If they havent just fax them a copy of it and they update it right away. I got my new MCAT score and faxed it that day to the admissions office then got accepted two days later. Don't wait for AACOMAS

Finally got word from MSU today after being complete since early August--placed on hold for my Fall grades.

Not a huge surprise here, this is the third school to do so and it means I have a shot still. At least I feel a little more in control of the outcome, which is better than waiting every Wednesday.

Good luck to everyone today!

Just got the accepted email! I had no clue that they didn't do interviews, so I thought it was a mistake at first

What is the dress code when you come to visit the campus after you have been accepted? Have people been wearing a suit or have they just been wearing dress pants and nice tops?? Any feedback would be nice!
Thanks

Just wondering, does anyone know how many applicants MSU-COM had last year? The AACOMAS college information book doesn't specify, nor could I find it on the MSU-COM website. Thanks!

I am in the class of 2013 and we had over 3000 applications for 300 spots.
