View Full Version : AZCOM Discussion Thread 2009-2010
SunDevilDoc 07-10-2009, 02:51 PM I couldn't find this thread so I figured I would start it.
I'm in AZ and I heard that there was an open house in June sometime, but does anyone know if there will be another one the rest of the summer? I want to go see the school and everything it's got.
jbru3423 07-10-2009, 07:44 PM I will be applying to AZCOM as well...it seems to have a strong reputation...especially given its match list from this past graduating class...
Would love to leave the northeast for the dry heat of the southwest...
Check out my mdapps...hope i have a shot, if you know something i don't, please let me know...
Best of luck to everyone...
Brocimus 07-14-2009, 09:01 PM This school is one of my top choices. I'll have my secondary application submitted very soon. Anyone know when they start reviewing apps and sending out interview invites?
cmfandjrb 07-21-2009, 12:15 PM Anyone hear anything from them about being complete? I submitted my secondary and letters a couple weeks ago and the online portal says they have not received my letters. I emailed them a few days ago to check on status...but have not gotten a response.

You will have to call them. AZCOM is absolutely GOD AWFUL about responding via email, unlike CCOM which usually responds the same day.
I don't know what's going on with AZCOM's admissions office, they are not always the most helpful or friendly people.
SMC123 07-22-2009, 10:25 AM The admissions lady told me on the phone today that they only accept or reject, and that there is no hold status for an application. I do not believe this at all. Can anybody confirm this??
Hi guys,
Don't let the admissions office of the school get you down. There were some not-so helpful people there last year when I applied... which almost turned me off from the school entirely. However, when I actually went to the school for my interview, people were quite nice and helpful there, and since receiving my acceptance - everyone in the admissions and student services offices have been super great. So don't let your initial run-ins with the admissions office affect your perception of the school.
With that said, I would certainly recommend you apply EARLY. I sent in all my materials last year in October, was complete mid-November, got an interview invite in December for a late-February interview (as all the earlier interview spots were booked). I had to keep checking the online system a billion times to finally capture a January interview which eventually opened up. If I had known how aggravating the process would be, I would have certainly applied much sooner... as I envied all the people who had acceptances by October/November instead of me who didn't know if I was going to med school or not until February. So I strongly advise you all to apply early, so that you aren't waiting months just to get an interview invite (when all the schools are burdened with applications). Best wishes to you all! :luck:

Sometimes I would rather just be rejected right out, instead o fbeing put "on hold" and teased for months.

qft. unless of course you get an acceptance forget about the school for a while then last minute you get in and it was your top choice thatd be cool ... but not as cool as getting in off the bat.
droogdoc 07-28-2009, 09:36 AM Have read a lot of complaints in older posts about the possibility of some of AZCOM's clinical rotation spots being stolen away by ATSU/SOMA. How does this make sense??? AZCOM has been there since the 1990's and SOMA is practiclly brand new. How could a new school steal them away?

I don't see how that is possible.
Soma is tied with CHC's. Ten of them across the USA. If you mean sites in
Phoenix, there are only 10 ish students who stay here for years 2-4. There are also 10 ish students in Tucson.
I would be more concerned with the U of A campus in Phoenix then ATSU.

Exactly. I forgot to mention that SOMA students usually leave AZ. As for U of A, that was another concern. They are more likely to give newer clincial sites to the MD school. But still, besides that, what is the huge issue with AZCOM clincals? The older posts from current students absolutely trash it, while some say it is fine. Like I said, there are plenty of med schools where students are somewhat on their own when setting up clinicals, not just AZCOM.
Kevon 07-29-2009, 08:34 PM Is anyone who used interfolio complete yet? I sent my letters ages ago, and asked for a status update. The said they were waiting on my letters, but just started downloading interfolio this week. I figured mine would be in the first batch. Oh well, no need to get anal. I just worry.
cmfandjrb 07-30-2009, 08:00 AM I emailed them to check on the status b/c it still said they hadn't received my LORs and about 2weeks later, they emailed back saying they just started scanning them and to be patient.
This morning I got an email saying to send in my letters b/c they don't have them and my file will not be reviewed until they get them. I don't know if I should resend them or not now.

when you log in to the status page does it say you are missing letters? I only ask this because i used virtualevals too
Kevon 07-30-2009, 08:29 AM Mine does, and I sent mine by interfolio a while ago.
droogdoc 07-30-2009, 08:51 AM Maybe it's something with Interfolio. I had my committee letter sent VirtualEvals and DO letter was mailed. I just checked my status and both AZCOM & CCOM still have them as "received".
i went through virtual evals too and only AZCOM recieved my letters but it says i still need my letters for CCOM. Maybe it has something to do with when they actually download the letters.
on a side not how long do you guys think it will take before we hear any news about interviews once everything is in

did you mail in the DO letter on your own, I ask because I have a DO letter that is being written but all my stuff was sent through virtual evals I was just thinking I could speed up the process by having the doc mail it in to the schools

Dont know how long it takes but they informed me interview invites will start going out in mid-August.
HaveHope 08-01-2009, 11:38 PM Hey. . . How many letters of recommendation did you guys send? Just the two they ask for, or did anyone send more than that. . . ? I have six that I want to send!! I don't know how extra letters are looked upon, though.
Thanks! =)
meowmeowmeow 08-01-2009, 11:53 PM SIX!!!! Wow.....I think you should talk to the admissions and then send accordingly....IMO I think its too much!!! but its only my opinion

Haha, yeah, it IS a lot. They all say different things, though. I figured if no one here could give me info. over the weekend then I'd give em a call on Mon. Thanks for your opinion!

I am sending 5 to my schools. I have 8 total letters, but 3 of them are just so-so (not that I have seen them , just a feeling). I feel it is a good number, and I have been pretty fortunate so far. Although, AZCOM still says they do not have my letters, and they are the only school that doesn't.
vegousc 08-02-2009, 01:24 PM Hi. For those of you who submitted the secondary already, did you receive a notification to fill it out from AZCOM? My AACOMAS application was released July 16th, yet I have heard absolutely nothing from AZCOM. If we do not need a notification to fill out the secondary, would you kindly point out to me where I can find the secondary prompt? Thanks a lot.

i was verified on the 23rd of july and sent to schools like the 30th. CCOM was the first school i got back and since AZCOM is a sister school i just saw there application up there too a little bit later on in the day. i never recieved any email from them telling me to fill it out but i think i was supposed to. i would probably call them to find out whats up
vegousc 08-03-2009, 10:21 PM Hi, KB24,
Thank you for the information. I shall call their office then. Keeping my fingers crossed that they will pick it up. Incidentally, do you happen to know a link to the secondary anywhere? I searched through CCOM and AZCOM websites yet could not find it. Thanks again.
sunny1 08-04-2009, 10:35 AM How important do you think DO letter is to AZCOM? I have good MD letters, but I don't have significant relationships with any DOs. Thanks!

I was accepted at AZCOM and CCOM without a DO letter, only one MD letter, so it seems that it does not really matter.

I was also accepted w/out a DO letter and only 1 MD letter. Don't think it matters much.
SMC123 08-06-2009, 07:13 AM Has anybody been complete at this school? I sent in my Interfolio letters more than two weeks ago, and still am UNCOMPLETE. Does anybody know how long it's supposed to take? I keep calling them, and they keep telling me they haven't "looked" at any letters yet?
bcgans 08-06-2009, 07:23 AM SMC123,
I'm in the same boat. I submitted everything to both CCOM and AZCOM at the same time. Just got my "complete" letter from CCOM and AZCOM apparently has not received my MCAT score or my LORs. My guess is they are just slower, and probablly in the middle of orientation. I'll let you know if anything changes.

What's this "complete" letter?? My application status for AZCOM and CCOM has been showing that everything is received since early June and I still havent gotten any letter. I thought since my status shows everything as received it means I'm complete...?
bcgans 08-06-2009, 07:55 AM My status showed the same thing, and I figured I was complete as well (all green checks) then this morning I received an email from CCOM saying "this email is to inform you that your application is complete." I'm sure you are complete as well!

I'm sure too but that freaked me out a little. I just emailed AZCOM & CCOM about my status, as I wouldnt be able to call until this evening but CCOM usually has a response within 24 hours.
jfellings 08-06-2009, 11:23 AM I have had a lot of problems with my LOR's and AZCOM. I sent them electronically via Interfolio on 7/9/09 and for several weeks they were still not showing up in their system. I called several times and got transferred to a voicemail that never returned my calls. Because I never heard from someone I resent them on 8/5/09. I called again today and was able to talk to someone who located the letters and they are supposed to be downloaded today. So if your having problems I guess just keep working on them until it gets worked out? I am kind of bummed because this is one of my top schools and I don't want to be delayed because of this.
SMC123 08-06-2009, 01:03 PM Funny admissions people they have. Now they are telling me it takes 4-6 weeks to process the letters? In that time, I'm guessing I'll know of my interview in about 2-3 years...
cae2009 08-06-2009, 01:43 PM How long did it take all of you to receive a secondary from AZCOM? They have had my primary for a week now. From all the LOR issues, I am guessing I will be waiting awhile.

Sept 21st...
droogdoc 08-07-2009, 11:53 AM Same here. Just scheduled AZCOM interview for September 22. Check your interview status on the Midwestern portal. I did not get an email invite either!!!
Euskal Herria 08-07-2009, 12:42 PM I was able to schedule an interview as well! Friday Sept. 18th. Isn't that kind of weird that they don't send an e-mail invitation? Thanks guys for checking that and then posting; I am sure that I would not have checked it for quite a while!
droogdoc 08-07-2009, 01:11 PM With all the talk on UNECOM's thread about high tuition, I'm surprised no one has mentioned AZCOM's. Don't get me wrong, Iw ould love to go to this school but, man, their tuition last year was over $43,000. That's pretty high. Especially when, according to the CIB, the average scholarship/grant amount was only like $1,800.
wishintobedoc 08-07-2009, 01:14 PM Thanks for posting about checking portal. I was selected for an interview as well. It looks like they interview a lot of people since they had a lot of dates. It says that if you cannot make it to those dates you will be notified of more dates. I wanted to go in October since I will missing so much work already in September. Do I just wait for more dates and not select anything now? I didn't know if I waited too long would it then withdraw my app automatically or something. Do I need to call them and let know I am waiting for more dates??
thethethe 08-08-2009, 05:47 AM invite via email at 3am eastern time...
i think im going to be broke, too much traveling
SMC123 08-11-2009, 07:40 AM I submitted my letters through Interfolio 3 weeks ago, and still I am incomplete. I have been calling them almost everyother day (interfolio department at AZCOM and admissions), either they don't return the voicemail, or say they are running behind. Yet, I just got a email today from them telling me how im incomplete, LIKE I ALREADY DONT KNOW. I am already sick of this school. Not picking up, not returning emails, not returning voicemails, is this a medical school or a joke?

I went through the exact same thing. After not getting in touch with anyone I just resent my letters and called two days later and they said they had them. So even though I sent my letters the first time on 7/8/09, because they never showed up there I wasn't complete until 8/6/09..... kind of frustrating.
doxycycline 08-11-2009, 09:53 AM what is a good airline/airport to fly into for azcom? i was thinking southwest and phoenix ?
DarthBroosevelt 08-11-2009, 10:49 AM Hey Everyone-
I saw that a couple of people were talking about sending in 5 or more letters... the secondary asks for only 2. Is that a maximum of two letters, or a minimum? In other words, if I send in 4, will they read them all? Or will they just randomly pick two?
faith2 08-11-2009, 11:03 AM What is the secondary for this school I am adding them to my list
thanks
supras2kracer 08-12-2009, 03:01 PM what is a good airline/airport to fly into for azcom? i was thinking southwest and phoenix ?
Southwest is nice because you can check in the night before and pick your own seat on the plane (if you get in the first boarding group). Fly into phoenix
cae2009 08-12-2009, 07:26 PM Hey everyone. I just wanted to check in again and see if anyone remembers how long it took to get the secondary from AZCOM after they received the primary app. Thanks!

Yeah, I submitted my letters via Interfolio on 7/20 and I wasn't complete at AZCOM until today. ANNOYING! How long were people "complete" before they were selected for an interview?

Your story is my story, except I am still not complete.
Flushot 08-16-2009, 08:03 PM You have to pester the administration. They've behind on everything because even though DOs and Podiatry students started, they're still prepping things for the other classes coming in 2 weeks.
Just give them a call and they'll move you quickly.
droogdoc 08-16-2009, 10:31 PM what is a good airline/airport to fly into for azcom? i was thinking southwest and phoenix ?
That's what I'm doing. Also, I have read many posts about people saying that you should only do 100% carry-on. Considering the massive coronary one would have if the airline lost your checked luggage containing your suit this is understandable.
But how can you put your suit in carryon? It will look like a mess when you take it out, and yeah I know you can iron it out but it just seems like a bad idea. As does wearing it on the plane, as I am sure something would get on it. Murphy's Law....
Flushot 08-16-2009, 11:12 PM I used a suit/garment bag, like this one:
http://www.orvis.com/store/productchoice.aspx?pf_id=36T3&dir_id=885&group_id=15046&cat_id=15048&subcat_id=15054&adv=83094&cm_mmc=Nextag-_-Prod_feeds-_-Prod_feeds-_-83094
Just do a google search for "suit carry on" or something and you'll find something.
As for the airliner, Southwest works if you're within a neighboring state, but I came out from TX, so AA was my airline of choice.
As far as airport, there's really only Sky Harbor in Phoenix that is your option.

bcgans 08-17-2009, 01:10 PM Hey everyone,
Just got my interview invite via the portal today. I scheduled it for the first available, Friday September 18th. I may drive it (from Indiana) just for a mini vacation, also I'm 25 so car rental is a tad cheaper.
Hope to see some of you there! Good luck!

I'll give it a shot. PM me if you want to know something specific.
Living: Lots of choices. AZ housing cheap due to foreclosures, but Glendale is still kind of pricey. Plenty of apartments, ranging from 750-900 for a nice studio to 1050 for a 2/2.
Gym: AZCOM has a rec center and a tiny 1 room gym, but for many people this isn't enough. There's 24 hr fitness and LA fitness nearby campus.
Study: There is a 24 hr study lounge that is moderately full now and then. Library tends to open till midnight except on Fridays.
Class: Pretty standard. 9-5 and each day differs. Labs in afternoon (2013 hasn't had any yet).
Classmates: Yeah we help each other out. The azcom2013.com site helps with this, along with Facebook. It'll be hard to find a school these days where the faculty want the students to go to war with each other.
raebear 08-17-2009, 08:54 PM September 28th here.
I'm Sept 28th too! See you there!
BassCaster 08-19-2009, 02:50 PM Anyone going to AZCOM right after ATSU-SOMA? Interviewing at SOMA sept 21st. Might stay around there or take a cab up towards azcom after the interview. AZCOM interview date the 25th of sept. Let's hang out for the week! I'm sooo dreading sitting in my motel 6 room for 4 days doing nothing but prepping for the AZCOM interview. ($30/Night!) I'm willing to split a better hotel room with someone for half the price? I think I'll need a companion. Don't think I could survive the entire week w/out anyone to talk to. Can't believe i'm going to be stuck in az w/out a car cause I'm not 25yo. I wish i could rent!

Should be this week or next. I know....this wait for CCOM is killer.
I believe the first invite (from last year's thread) was reported on August 24th.

Agreed! They still don't have my letters because Interfolio had a glitch!! I finally got them to fix it and give me some free deliveries which was sweet, but I hate how it slowed down my process.
Runner69 08-19-2009, 04:11 PM where do people find material to learn enough about azcom in order to write a short essay as to why it's education is so good?
Tizoc 08-19-2009, 05:47 PM I couldn't find a whole lot about AZCOM, but I managed to get 250 words on paper after reading Elijah05's suggestion in another school thread:
"curriculum/research/community opportunities/location/any other BS...lol. Those are probably the 4 main things every school will see. If you dont know a lot and thats the best you can come up with then that is that. I dont know about [school name] but some schools really do understand that you wont know a lot about the school until you are there..."
woo hoo got an interview :D
Runner69 08-19-2009, 10:05 PM Is the Midwestern University Clinic open to 1st and 2nd year med students as well, or is solely for clinical rotations?
Phosphorus Ylide 08-22-2009, 11:20 AM Can someone who goes to AZCOM reply to the pros/cons thread linked in CB's sig? I read that there was difficulty in clinical rotation placements for AZCOM students. Is this true?

You might want to try one of the older DO class threads from 2011 or 2012. They don't have class until next week so some of them might respond.

like a month but prob less now because they have alrdy sent them out
Dciple 08-26-2009, 12:34 PM Can someone who goes to AZCOM reply to the pros/cons thread linked in CB's sig? I read that there was difficulty in clinical rotation placements for AZCOM students. Is this true?
For those of you worried about rotation spots, don't be. Here is a direct quote from our Student Government President:
"As for rotations spots in Arizona, we already had enough clinical rotation spots in Arizona, but Ohio was secured for the students that would like to have the more traditional ward focused education that is modeled more after an allopathic school. We are working our way towards as many ward based rotations as possible for third year, but as I attend our Dean's council meetings, every month we are updated with new hospitals and new offers to the schools for in state rotations. So don't worry about Arizona rotations, if Arizona is where our students will want to stay, rest assured they will stay and have quality rotations."
I am MSI at AZCOM, if anyone has any specific questions feel free to PM me (just be patient if I don't respond right away, as the classes are really starting to pile on...)
raebear 08-26-2009, 01:30 PM Can't believe i'm going to be stuck in az w/out a car cause I'm not 25yo. I wish i could rent!
Have you checked out rates for renting cars for people under the age of 25? It's not that you can't, it's just that you have to pay a little extra for the insurance. My boyfriend and I rented a car last year on a vacation (we were both 23) and it came out to be less than $25 per day. So check it out if you really want a car badly.

AZCOM, like almost all DO schools, follows AACOMAS guidelines for acceptances. If you are given an acceptance before November 15, you have until mid-December to decide if you are going to attend and put down a deposit. That is one reason why early application is important, you have a lot fo time to decide, especially if it is between multiple schools.
PeterDO2B 08-27-2009, 07:41 AM Does anyone know what percent of interviewed applicants receive offers of admission from AZCOM? Is it me or do they interview a lot of people out of those who submit secondaries? I am just wondering about this?

When I interviewed this past year, a rep from the admissions office said that about 300 people are chosen for interviews for the 250 seats. So it's a huge weeding out process up until the interview; once you get an interview though, it's a high probability you're in.

That seems like a really low number. Even if they accept all 300, I don't think you can't count on 250 of those students actually deciding to matriculate.

matrica 08-29-2009, 08:31 AM I received Midwestern (AZCOM) secondary. They require to download a CV or resume with all the volunteer and work experiences. Are you guys just list those or explain also in a couple of sentences what you did. It is already on AACOMAS so I don't see the point. I am just afraid it is going to be way to long for me.
Any advice?

It's best to upload your resume/CV because its a semi-closed interview. They have your resume, secondary essays and personal statement, so if you don't mention your activities there, they won't know about them. Personally, I did a resume and then my interviewers asked questions to learn more; I'm more familiar with the format of a resume than a CV.
Flushot 08-29-2009, 01:56 PM When I interviewed, they had AACOMAS's activities and stuff listed, but my interviewers were definitely more focused on my resume/CV since I made it as concise as possible. I also put my numbers on there, which they noted they were not supposed to know but were happy to have anyway. In other words, don't put any scores on there unless you want to.
I think the resume is a great way to magnify some of your research or clinicals that would make for great interview discussion. I put my research and experiences immediately after my education listing and also made the font a bit bigger (not enough to make it look ridiculous though). I don't know if it'll work for everyone but it certainly helped them notice what I had done.
matrica 08-29-2009, 05:10 PM Thank you guys!
cae2009 08-30-2009, 07:12 AM Hi everyone! After reading the interview section in the CIB, I am really confused about the format of the interview. It sounds like they invite small groups to interview (I would hope so, they have interviews every day of the week!) and then interview them all together as a group? Can this be right?

It sounds like they invite small groups to interview (I would hope so, they have interviews every day of the week!) and then interview them all together as a group? Can this be right?
Oh, I hope not. Group interviews stress me out! I don't really want to be directly compared to other canidates like that.
Flushot 08-30-2009, 12:47 PM No, they interview each applicant separately. There is an interview panel of 3 people, usually 1 clinical faculty or physician, 1 basic science faculty, and 1 wild card (student, administration, etc.)
The groups you might have heard about are used for organizing interviewees into which panel they will be interviewing with. So, don't worry, you'll be on your own, but in front of 3 people.
does AZCOM have a specific focus??? for example, some schools focus on certain populations (rural, underserved, urban) or primary care?
Flushot 08-30-2009, 08:42 PM does AZCOM have a specific focus??? for example, some schools focus on certain populations (rural, underserved, urban) or primary care?
Not that I know of really. I think there is a required rural rotation third year but that's about it. AZCOM is very traditional and aims broadly in terms of what the students should be. I think you might be thinking that AZCOM has a 'focus' because of AT Still SOMA that is nearby, but no, it's a pretty typical setup.

Yes, fly into Phoenix Skyharbor International Airport. If you don't want to rent a car, though it's probably less expensive, take the Super Shuttle to wherever you need to be. Getting to Midwestern is about a 25 minute drive northwest of the airport, but it's not difficult. Send me a message if you have any other questions!

About the typo: I'm not sure what to say. It's variable and unfortunately, I don't think there's much you can do about it specifically at this point. Instead, just keep in touch with administration and see if you're being considered or on the backburner.
PeterDO2B 09-03-2009, 06:26 AM I heard AZCOM interviews 300 applicants for 250 seats in the entering class. That would mean that 8 out of 10 applicants would get in, is this true?

I suspect they interview around 450. I don't know where people are getting this 300 number from, but realistically, most schools interview at least 50% more for the number of seats they have to fill, especially if it is a private school.

You can find them at the AZCOM 2008-2009 attachment list (the little paperclip to the right of the thread) but seeing as how those threads may be archived soon, I've gone ahead and uploaded all of those files here.

I thought the same thing at first! Just click save your application at the bottom and it should save it. Then it will show up as CV document to the right of where you upload and you can click it to view it.

jesscsanchez 09-08-2009, 08:46 AM what is a good airline/airport to fly into for azcom? i was thinking southwest and phoenix ?
I'm flying from South Florida and it seems the cheapest for me is Northwest Airlines. I'm planning on going to the Phoenix airport too. Check the airline sites directly, they're always much cheaper than travel sites like Expedia, Travelocity, etc.
Anyone else apply to ATSU as well? I've got my AZCOM interview but I'm waiting for ATSU just in case, so I don't make the same trip out twice. :)
Flushot 09-08-2009, 05:24 PM Definitely check both (direct and 3rd party sources like Priceline). I think Southwest gets really good deals through 3rd party sites. Most of the people are coming in from around here so I guess it would be a bit different on the east coast.

ch1nchi11a 09-10-2009, 09:41 AM Midwestern (both AZCOM and CCOM) has a new policy that they are implementing this year that any applicant who is not a resident of the U.S. must submit TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) scores to complete their application. This includes any individual from English-speaking countries like England, Australia, and Canada, even if English is their first language.
I was born in Canada and did my biology degree in the U.S. English is my first language. Now I have to shell out $245 ($35 late fee because I'm taking the test tomorrow) before either school will consider my application to be "complete." Tomorrow I get to test my ability to listen, read, speak, and write in English. I'm so stoked.

Ya, it should be about 2 weeks. If you have waited that for 2 weeks and don't see an update on the online portal, just call the admissions office and ask if there is any update on your status. If they ask you for your Social Security #, then that means they are about to tell you "accepted" or "on hold". The online portal takes some time to get udated, it was about a week after I got my acceptance via phone.
Good luck and congrats to everyone who has interviewed/got an invite :)

This happened to a few people in our postbac actually. Just continue to call them and let them know you're interested. I remember VCOM did this to me, basically because I was so far off from the region and they wanted to see if I was interested. After hearing from several places, I put them on the backburner and it turned out as predicted.
I wouldn't worry and just show your interest to break out of the limbo.

CardioPlus 09-15-2009, 06:19 PM Hey, I got my interview invite today and scheduled my interview for Friday November 6th. The site suggested renting a car and driving to Glendale. I was just wondering if anyone had experience with convenient hotels in the area? any with shuttle services from the airport or to the campus? Also, does anyone know how old you have to be to rent a car in Arizona? I know in NY it's 25, so if that's the case in AZ, i'll be limited to buses or shuttles. lol Thanks!
Flushot 09-15-2009, 08:37 PM I don't know about independent shuttles, but you might be able to get a taxi or a shuttle to campus from any of the nearby hotels. Check Priceline or whatever for hotels and look them up individually. I also believe that it is 25 to rent a car here, so you'll have to make due.
Also, you could try getting a student host. I'd volunteer but I don't have a car right now so I wouldn't be the best host for this until I get one :o

It was on my secondary and I called AZCOM and they said I could attach an addendum to my application, but I felt an entire additional sheet of paper would just draw more attention to it. I got an interview with AZCOM anyway so that was a good sign.

My interview is in October and I've arranged to rent a car with enterprise under Midwestern's discount rate and then its an additional $10 since I'm under 25. So I think the total for a day was $60. And for the hotel, I just went to priceline and searched for hotels by distance from AZCOM by typing in their address.

I am interviewing on monday. Do they interview every day this week?
I've got a 23 MCAT, ~3.5GPA overall and ~3.4 Science GPA...Should I even bother applying?
Dciple 09-20-2009, 01:24 PM I've got a 23 MCAT, ~3.5GPA overall and ~3.4 Science GPA...Should I even bother applying?
I would say your GPA is strong, but if you could raise up your MCAT by about 3 or 4 points you would be a much stronger candidate...I am a current AZCOM student, I had a 30 mcat with 3.22 GPA overall and a 3.15 science, if that helps you gauge anything.
Having said that, there are many more factors than just MCAT/GPA...do you feel comfortable applying with those stats and with your extracurriculars? Do you have strong Ref letters? Have you shadowed a DO (if applying to DO schools)? Have you worked or volunteered in a clinical setting (with patient contact)?
If you answered yes and you feel comfortable then apply. Honestly, getting into med school is random, they may overlook your MCAT because of how strong everything else is. Just be prepared to explain your score at some schools (AZCOM interview is closed profile, so interviewer won't have your stats). Also, as a side note, MD school is probably out, mainly because they are very stat heavy; whereas, DO school is more about the applicant as a whole (kinda sounds like the philosophy of a DO vs an MD doesn't it? hehe)
Good luck, I wish you the best!

Extracurriculars, reference letters, and shadowing are all good. I have done no volunteer work in a clinical setting because I was a college athlete and never really had time. I have other volunteer experiences though. I'm still toying with applying or not. I'm also planning to retake the MCAT in January, but I'm still applying to schools to see if I can get in this fall without the retake.

Explain a closed-file interview to me a bit more. Does it mean that they've looked through your file before the interview and know about your EC's, exp, etc?
calimed214 09-20-2009, 04:19 PM Explain a closed-file interview to me a bit more. Does it mean that they've looked through your file before the interview and know about your EC's, exp, etc?
Open file = interviewers have access to your whole file & usually review it prior to the interview
Partial open file = interviewers have access to parts of your file. Usually the EC's and personal statement. May not have access to GPA/MCAT scores.
Closed file = interviewers do not have access to any part of your file. When you walk in the door, they will know nothing about you. However, they will likely assume that your stats are competitive enough to get an interview.

As an addendum to that, at AZCOM at least, closed file means exactly what this person wrote but if you included a resume or CV they interviewers will have a copy of that. If you did not include the resume/CV, then the interviewers will have nothing and will just ask you your interests and such.
Good luck to everyone :)
bcgans 09-21-2009, 11:15 AM I interviewed on 9/18, just wanted to give those interviewing my thoughts.
The day started with breakfast and a couple students just hanging out and answering questions, they were very open and honest. Everyone was too nervous to eat. :-)
We then had a presentation about the schools, board scores, match lists, 3rd and 4th year rotation sites, as well as an explanation of the "decompressed" 1st year schedule to help you acclimate to med school. After that we had a 15 minute presentation over financial aid and cost of attendance.
There were 18 of us, broken up into groups of three and interviewed one at a time by one of three panels consisting of three people each. I interviewed with one science faculty and two students.
Before the interviews, the admissions director came in and told us it would be a closed file interview, because they felt we all had strong numbers and just wanted to get a feel for us as individuals. This really put me at ease. He told us to relax and just enjoy meeting people. During the interview, they had my personal statement and CV. It went about 30 minutes and was a lot of fun.
After half the group was done interviewing, we went on a small tour of some of the major buildings, came back and waited for the other half to interview, then went to lunch. During lunch, several current 3rd years came and sat with us. They were very open and knowledgeable, and I have nothing but exceptional things to say about them and my experience.
After lunch, we went on a bus tour of the campus, viewing the clinic, student housing, anatomy lab, OMM lab, etc. We even got a 15 minute OMM demonstration by our two tour guides which was outstanding!
Overall, AZCOM is amazing. It was beautiful, lots of nice people, great weather, close to a major city (Phoenix), awesome match lists and comlex scores, and an overall great vibe from the school. I may be biased as this was my first interview, but it really set the stage for my next couple.
I'm in love.
P.S. They said it would take roughly 3 weeks to receive their decision in writing (they dont do email acceptances) However, the best way to check your status would be to look at the matriculation page on the MWU portal. When you are accepted, the page changes with all your matriculation acceptance stuff on it as opposed to what it says now, "your information could not be found." - good info to know, seeing as how my letter has to get almost 2,000 miles across the country. I would be happy to answer any questions you guys have about the school!
jesscsanchez 09-21-2009, 12:27 PM Thanks for the insight above! I've been hearing nothing but good things about this school and the interviewing process. I'm scheduled at the end of October, so I may be picking your brain more as the day approaches. Good luck to you!
raebear 09-21-2009, 03:29 PM Thanks for the info bcgans! That makes me really excited for my interview there next week!:D
buhito 09-21-2009, 05:11 PM has anyone taken their luggage to the interview?? think there would be a place to stash it without being too awkward? ...i have a flight kiiinda close to the end of the interview
EckXXX 09-21-2009, 05:14 PM I just interviewed a few hours ago--what a great school. The feel of the school is very positive in terms of not being overwhelming, however, not too small either. The tour guide did a great job of showing us the campus and campus housing.
Initially, I went in with no expectations, but walked away very very impressed by AZCOM's full package. If I am fortunate enough to have the opportunity to matriculate, then I could easily see myself doing so. Anyone who has an interview here should feel very fortunate.
I will be honest and say that Nova had a very similar feel and--if I make it off their waitlist--I would have a tough time choosing between the programs, but AZCOM is definitely up there.
The interview format has been the best so-far. I really liked the ethically dilemmas that I was questioned about and, overall, felt as though this school has the best picture of who I am as a candidate.
Best of luck to everyone. Hopefully you are one of the fortunate ~700 to interview here out of thousands.

Thanks for the great feedback! Before reading this I was a lil iffy about the $500 i'll be dropping to get to this interview, but now I'm pretty excited about my interview in Nov. Hope everything turns out well for you with AZCOM!:)

I did that at my Touro NV and it was not a problem. There was even another guy with his luggage as well. They just had us stash our bags under the big desk in the front entrance with the receptionist. I'm sure they get it all the time and will be able to accommadate you without a problem. Good luck!

JanikeyDoc 09-23-2009, 06:41 AM Does anyone know how many people AZCOM interviews and what percent get an offer of admission out of those who interview? I keep hearing some schools interview large numbers of applicants, I was wondering if this school is one of them.
droogdoc 09-23-2009, 07:30 AM AZCOM exceeded my expectations and was probably my best interview next to Nova. Great school, and it seems getting rotations may not be a problem, as most students stay in the Phoenix area.
Only complaint is the tuititon, but oh well. I already knew that. I was very impressd with prtty much everything with the school, especially the fact that they have a physiology professor that can be a twin sister to Eva Longoria! She was very nice, as was everyone at the school.

Greetings Flu Shot,
I wanted your advice on how to handle a pre-interview hold at AZCOM?
Did your friends from the post bacc program get interviews after being on pre-interview hold?
I really want to go to school here and I think I would be a good fit.
Thanks for your help and guidance.
||||
Here was my response:
About the post bac: They only did a preinterview hold on people in my program because they were complete late or had some other administrative hold ups. Otherwise, everyone who was complete around now got an interview whether now or after Fall quarter. Eventually, everyone in my post bac who continued to contact them in person got an interview.
In your situation, I would keep calling them and send anything you could add, be it another LOR or additional transcripts if you're still in school. My personal experience with pre-interview hold at VCOM was because they wanted to know if I was interested. I got several interviews by then so their prediction about me was correct.
Again the best thing you can do is stay in touch if you can't send in any more materials. Unless they told you something specific about your situation that you need to address, this is about all you can do. Good luck and let me know how it turns out.
[END]
As for the current topic of when they meet, I think they still do their weekly meetings on Thursdays and make online 'adjustments' on Friday i.e., the change in your online.midwestern.edu account to include matriculation links.
I personally never received any acceptance mail, package, or email until 1 month prior to moving to AZ. I only called and checked online. I was accepted in October 2008 too. I did all preparations online.
bcgans 09-26-2009, 08:58 AM Yea, the associate dean said to expect a status change by next Friday--if you are accepted, then matriculation payment information will show-up. All decisions will come by mail.

When you say "next Friday" do you mean Friday, October 2nd? I was under the impression Thursday, October 1st was the first day the admissions committee would meet, and Friday was the first we'd hear. Sorry, I kinda had a mild MI last night when I heard someone got accepted so early and my status hadn't changed. I feel better that other applicants with good numbers have no change either. Guess I'll call Monday? We'll see

And for Roberie, seriously, was it muffins? I need to know how you did it  Congrats again.

That is weird, and almost a bit disconcerting. I would be devastated if they had somehow made a mistake and accepted me prematurely. Oh well, they confirmed over the phone, so everything must be good.
Good luck to the rest of you.

Why must the gods torment us this way??
You got me, man. This all just adds to the mystique of medical school admissions.
DarthBroosevelt 09-28-2009, 10:28 AM Hi all,
I interviewed 9/24 and they told us they would be meeting 'sometime next week', which we've discovered is thursday, and to be expecting word back from them within the week after that.
Why is the Dean calling people before they meet?!?!

matrica 09-28-2009, 03:49 PM I am pre-interview hold at AZCOM, and I would like to know more about the letter of intent.
If you ever send one, or know about it, please help, and give me advice.
1., First of all, what should it include? What and what NOT to put in there!
2., Where should I send it? Admission?
3., Should I write why this school should interview me?
4., Should I restate why I want to go there? It is kinda in the secondary.
5., Should I address my weakness in my application?
Please share your wisdom!
Thanks

I would say the first thing to find out is why you are on a pre-interview hold. KCOM was nice enough to e-mail me their reason for a pre-interview hold--waiting for my BioChem grade. If I really wanted to go there, then I really do not think a letter of intent would make them budge on my hold.
From what I have gathered on the forums, a LOI is most effective when someone is placed on a wait list after an interview.
Anything is worth a shot. Hopefully someone else has some more insight.
premedgirl12 09-29-2009, 06:08 AM Hi everyone! I know I'm a little late in the application game but I just finished all of my secondaries over the weekend. I received in interview invite from AZCOM this morning and when I went to schedule the only date they had available was January 22 :scared:
Is the interview so late because my application wasn't that strong or is it possible they're all really booked up until then? Do you think I should call and try to get it sooner? I was so excited this morning and now I'm freaking out again... I just don't want the class to be nearly full when I interview.

It's prob just because they're booked until that date. When I was invited to interview 2 weeks ago, the first available date was November 6th.. At schools, if you get an interview,, you get an interview and can schedule the for the next available date. I do not think the later date is a reflection that you're a weak applicant! :)
To give you some perspective, I also received an interview invite from nycom on the same date as azcom and people who were invited to interview at nycom last week were already scheduling into January as well. So the date you gave seems about right.

Does anyone know if AZCOM uses rolling admissions and when the class will fill? Or do they offer a set number of seats per month like some schools do?

From what I've researched about this, you can use a letter to reiterate that you are highly interested in their school and what specifically makes you a good fit. It's also a great opportuinty to update the adcom on any changes, esp if you have additional clinical or volunteering experiences since you sent in your primary. Just keep it short and sweet and hit on those things.
I agree that it is probably more common to send it when you are waitlisted, but if you have strengthened your weaker points, it might be helpful to let admissions know.
matrica 09-29-2009, 05:02 PM Thanks your post was useful. I write one anyway, and will see. Thanks guys.

AZCOM is definitely rolling admissions, so get your stuff in now and quickly. They make decisions every week and do not have a quota or a limit, so no, there is no such a restriction as far as I know.
Roberie 09-30-2009, 09:05 AM Does anybody know whether AZCOM has a sim lab for the med students similar to DMU's? I went into this process thinking patient simulator mannequins were a standard educational tool these days. However, AZCOM didn't show us anything of the sort, therefore I doubt they have one. Anyone know otherwise?

You sure? The posted link was for the optometry catalogue. I did hear mention of a dental sim lab, but I'm sure that bears no resemblance to what the medical students would need. Same for optometry.

When I was there on Monday they told us that they accept 60% of the people they interview, waitlist 30% and reject 10%. So it's a 90% chance of not being rejected which is pretty awesome.

Actually a wait list is just another way to reject an applicant. Maybe its nicer or nastier depending upon your viewpoint but its generally a drawn out process to see if a student will be removed from the waiting list. I know a lot of people who got wait listed and never got off the list. So really its more like a 60 percent chance of getting into school once you get an interview. I think its also the most biased step in admissions. Any negative impression could break the deal.

As true as that is (I was waitlisted last year at a MD school for 6 months just to get rejected), there is a point to the waitlist. Due to the price of tuition and many people's motivation to go to their state school (due to cost/family pressure/whatever) a good amount of people drop their acceptance and there is a fair amount of movement with the waitlist. I def agree that it is a lot of BS since they should disclose your ranking on the waitlist (i.e. people in the lower 25% basically have no chance), but it is not an outright rejection. If you are waitlisted there is still hope :)

RimpleDoc 10-06-2009, 05:49 AM I heard a lot of good things about AZCOM, in particular interest to me is that I heard core clinicals can be completed in California, where I am from. I have not heard of any such official rotations in CA at AZCOM. If anything, they might have hook ups for audition rotations, but you're on your own for setting up and all of that paperwork. The only out of state rotations that are directly sponsored by the school are the Ohio CORE rotations and those are optional. I hope that answers your question.

When I interviewed September 18th they said they were working on getting rotation agreements in California because so many of their students come from California but nothing has been finalized.

Well, that's news to me. I'll try talking to AZCOM SGA and see if that is at least on the planning room floor, because when I interviewed last year, I was told some things that never panned out.
For example, they told us they were planning an official COMLEX class elective for 2nd year, but it doesn't seem to have followed through. Instead, you'll get the roughly 4 weeks to prepare.
It's true a lot of people come from California, but it's been like that for several years now and I wonder if they just now got the initiative? At any rate, it would be nice to have some spots there.

RimpleDoc 10-09-2009, 07:41 AM I am deliberating between Touro CA and AZCOM. I like AZCOM but I am iffy about Arizona, the Bay Area is a lot nicer in terms of living. Not sure if I can handle the hot desert, also found the region too spread out.

I'm guessing they do not interview in December. I got the invite mid September, and when I went to schedule there was a few days in November at the time and that was it. I check periodically to see if there are any other dates, and after November all that ever was available was Jan. Congrats on the invite! Just as FYI, all i got in the mail from them was a letter stating I was accepted. An "acceptance packet" was not mailed to me until the end of July (about 3 days before I moved to AZ), and it contained some info about orientation and other info about starting school. So i wouldn't expect a packet for quite some time lol.

Everything can be taken care of at online.midwestern.edu so I wouldn't worry about it.

ditto this. my interviewers were so nice and enjoyable that i had to be careful what i let slip out of my mouth because i felt so comfortable. just be confident, they obviously like what they've seen of you so far. good luck!
Grey Wind 10-14-2009, 06:40 AM Interviewing on Friday... any advice?
oh, and you probably already know this but the interviews are closed file as far as your numbers go. they have your PS, ECs, and secondary essays. but, they assume that you are numerically competitive so numbers dont factor into the actual interview.
idoc2014 10-15-2009, 09:57 AM I just got my official letter in the mail yesterday. Interviewed on 9/24.
Thomas Hearns 10-15-2009, 08:38 PM I'm going to cancel my 11/12 interview in about 5 minutes for whoever wants it :)
McFlojoDO 10-17-2009, 02:19 PM I'm leaving in a few hours on a long drive to Glendale. Anyone else interviewing on the 19th? I hear the continental breakfast isn't anything special but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.:xf:

The breakfast was snacks (pretzels, granola bars, etc) and bottled water or cokes.
Flushot 10-18-2009, 03:29 PM First, congrats to all the acceptances that I might've missed :)

I would add the CV/resume that you have to post for the secondary to that list. For my interview, this was the primary thing they saw and read. It's short, condensed, and gives a good overview of a candidate with little effort. Plus, I accidentally put my gpa and MCAT on there which caught the eye of my faculty interviewers (interestingly, they were glad to see the numbers, I'm guessing out of curiosity).
So, yeah, if anything, make sure your CV is exactly what you want them to see and definitely make it succinct. They'll hopefully read every word of it before you step into that room.
marke 10-18-2009, 06:29 PM Hi,
I am just wondering how long does it take for me to receive AZCOM secondary after my aacomas primary was released to them (about a week ago)? I already received COMP's secondary but not AZCOM yet... I am kind of worried...

Stop worrying. It's a long cycle. You should get the secondary soon. Have your answers complete already though so you can have a quick turnaround. I can almost a sure you that even though you got COMP's secondary first you'll prolly still hear from AZCOM, as in a interview, before COMP (see the definition: slow)

Oh right, forgot about the CV. :)
lentilfarm 10-20-2009, 01:51 PM Is AZCOM just really slow to send emails? I've seen some people on SDN getting interview invites right after being complete. According to the MWU portal, they logged in my last letter on Friday (16th), but I still don't even have the complete email. What's the deal?

Complete email?? I never got any emails that I was complete- there is a pre-accepted section, go to suppl. application part and you can check everything you need there. If you are complete it will say so. I never even got an email saying I was given an interview- I found it one day by checking under interview scheduling. Good luck:luck:
