Pikeville is one of my top choices. It looks like interviews werent sent out till october, but judging by how early things seem to be moving this year, maybe sooner??

Haha, I know!! I found it like 30 seconds after making this one...Damn giraffe pants, bein' all silly, lowering my inhibition...

Anywhoo, Pikeville is also slowing climbing to the top of my list, to quote you almost directly. Although I'm from CT, something about the area and the school are very intriguing. I got their secondary yesterday and spoke to a very nice southern woman in the office about their weird LOR requirements. Is your file complete there (or anywhere for that matter) yet?

I am not complete yet, I sent in my application three days ago, but my MCAT does not come out till 8/4.

I actually just sent in my curriculum vitae and they said that would be fine instead of filling out most the secondary.

Did you guys do it by hand? It said you could by computer but I couldnt figure it out.

I am hoping to be complete the first week of August and (god willing) interview there the first day.

Yes, Angel is the sweet person and she is so helpful. I dunno how they'll take to an Indiana boy, but I am pretty close to the region and my parents live in a town < 900 people and I wrote about part of that in my statement of purpose.

Sweet! Finally people to talk to about Pikeville!

I'm hoping to be complete there about the same time, bcgans. I'm chugging away through my secondaries, but am stuck waiting for my committee LOR, which we be delivered by 8/31 "at the latest", or so they claim. UGGGG. When is the first day for interviewing?!

bcgans
07-17-2009, 10:59 AM
I dunno when the interviews start. I think I'll wait till I'm complete before I start bugging Angel about it. I guess I'll probably do secondaries and watch my savings dwindle till then! I'm sure we'll know more in August.

I need to start enjoying my summer!!!!!

Let me know if anyone hears anything. This is starting to get exciting!

The initial email I received with the secondary said it takes 2-3 weeks to process the application. I guess last year (from what I have read) everyone got yellow cards in the mail saying they were complete. I guess I'll know more in August, when I start bugging the bejesus out of admissions :D

Is that match official or is it put together by students?

Except for 1 neurosurg, that match isn't really impressive. Not one single ortho, ophtho, ENT, rad, or derm. Is it because students aren't competitive, PCSOM clinical rotations doesn't offer much electives (or at least not until residency applications are in), or are students simply loyal to the PCSOM mission?

I'm not trying to piss off any PCSOM lovers but it's just that most competitive students usually go for good lifestyle/good pay specialties

Hex-

I wrote about my parents living in small town, how I loved the culture, love being outdoors, how primary care was right for me. I also discussed Pikeville's mission and stuff like that. Came out to about one full page.

About the match list:

I pulled that off of a thread somewhere, I do not know if it was official or not. As far as lifestyle specialties, I really see myself in FM, EM, or maayyybe gen surg. So I really don't have a reason to care about ENT, Ortho, plastics, or derm.

If you want a better idea about their match lists Angel in admissions might be able to help. She is very good about responding.

hope this helps!

I recently spoke to the Admissions Coordinator about admissions statistics (no nicer person exists in any admissions office anywhere). Last year's average MCAT for admitted students was 23. The lowest MCAT of an accepted student was an 18 from some unspecified previous year (not necessarily last year). Average science GPA was in the neighborhood of 3.4.

Interviews begin the first week of October. Good luck to everyone!

bcgans
07-26-2009, 09:28 AM
Thank you so much for that info! Makes me slightly less nervous about my MCAT score (which is released in 9 days). I just got my last letter of rec so aside from the MCAT score I will be complete at PCSOM. I wonder when they start scheduling interviews?

I'm glad there are a lot of people interested in PCSOM! I'm really excited!

The 21 average was from their inaugural year... they probably got a late start recruiting. I expect William Carey to be in a similar situation this year..

Would there be any reason to send in my secondary before I have the DO LOR? I'm having trouble finding someone with time and the ability to return a call.

bcgans
07-30-2009, 06:28 PM
I hear ya about the DO LOR! It took me a while to finally find one who I really got to know and could write a great letter.

I personally sent my secondary in two weeks ago, just sent them my LORs through Interfolio yesterday, and wont send them my MCAT score will next week when it gets released. Thats roughly 3-4 weeks between my first mail to them and my last. I just hate hanging on to stuff for a long time before sending it in, it feels like I accomplished something!

You can either send it in now or wait for the DO LOR. It really is personal preference.

Hey Guys, I was hoping to clear up some of the questions that are on the forum. First, The match list is from one year only. Actually the list is not really poor at all and most of the residencies that our students go into are usually their first choice. Our statistic for first choice residency was like 98% this year. People from Pikeville go into radiology, Derm, ENT ect. every year. I personally know a few graduates that are in these specialties. Actually, our ENT professor is a graduate of our school. It's true that our school is geared toward the primary care and not specialties but this is no way eliminates you from being competitive in specialties at all. Plus that match list is only a tiny sample of the hundreds of graduate students we have already put out. One thing that other schools don't have that Pikeville has is a network of graduates that students can utilize to help with getting into certain specialties. Newer schools and branch schools have very little network of graduates. Anyway, Interviews for class positions are usually on Fri, or Sat. The average MCAT is somewhere in the mid 20's now and some are as high as mid 30's but I have no clue what the lowest is. The MCAT is important but they look beyond that test and usually pick up the students that are capable of doing well on boards and making quality doctors. Good luck to everyone applying.

I just got the secondary today...whats with having to restate what on your aacomas application already? Seems unnecessary. Also, does anyone know how to type in pdf files. Maybe I just have the cheap version of adobe but I cannot write on it. Does anyone know how to get around this or possibly a free program that I could use to edit the pdf. I could handwrite it but my handwriting is not at all flattering.

From how I understood the essay, they want you to write specifically about why PCSOM, why rural, osteopathic medicine. I think the statement is "why do you believe you should be trained as a rural, osteopathic physician?" I talked about the small town my parents live in, why I fit with PCSOM, the DOs I shadowed, etc. My essay had nothing to do with my AACOMAS essay, but thats just how I did it.

I wound up handwritting the app and typing the essay, also skipped most the app and sent in a curriculum vitae.

I would actually say that most of our school is either from western KY or out of state. There are a few from eastern KY but not too many. Interviews might start in October. I know they are already starting to process apps... ect. As a sidenote, we just got a brand new standardized patient program at school. It's a pretty big operation and will help you get early exposure to how to do exams. They grade you on how you do physicals and tell families their loved ones have passed. It really prepares you for rotations which is where you need to impress preceptors to get residencies. Just thought I'd give that info to those who might want to talk about it in interviews.

But i have to say this school is great.. ive only been here for 3 weeks and the level of interaction with the professors and deans is unprecedented. My class was quite competitive. A lot of people were interested in doing primary care. Acutally, we had quite a few surgeons come from the class. Besides, you have to IM for three years before you do IM subspecialties. IMO match lists don't mean much. If you are a hard worker and do well on the Wards, you will be rewarded.

The Admissions Committee spent last week and will spend this week reviewing complete files.

Interview invitations are expected to go out by the end of next week (approx. September 11th) via snail mail and e-mail.

Interview dates planned so far are: October 9th and 16th, November 6th and December 14th.

Good luck to all. :):xf:

I agree. I might call later this week. It sounds like Pirate went to PCSOM and Angel told him/her about their interview, yet didnt receive an email. I am confused as well but will just keep checking my mail. Any current student care to clear this up? Thanks

My interview invite came via email. I talked to Angel yesterday, and she did not mention that I would receive a follow up letter in the mail. Earlier in the process I also received notification that my application was complete via email. I have not received any information from PCSOM via snail mail. Hope this helps.

Yeah, she had a stack of hard copies to send out. She showed me mine, but said I couldn't take it. So I'm not sure if invites are sent both ways or not. I have not received an email nor a snail mail invite since I met with her. This is confusing, but I pushed my interview back to Oct. 16th, so maybe that's why I haven't seen one yet.

Just got an email inviting me to the interview session in October :) I'm so excited! Pikeville is my first choice, so I really want to nail the interview. Anyone got any tips about what to wear, how the interview usually go, things to pay attention to? I'm also curious about how many candidates are usually at each interivew round. I've heard, with some speculation, that getting an interview at Pikeville is a very good sign of getting in--like they use the interview as more of a confirmation of whether or not you'll be a good fit at the school. Any help anyone could give would be fantastic!

Congrats to those who got interviews already. I've heard that there have been a lot of applicants this year. As for what to expect at the interview, you will have two interviewers that interview you at the same time. It's pretty relaxed and they'll talk to you about your life and why you want to do medicine. You'll have an info session before your interview and then after your interview, you'll have a student led tour around the school and they'll give you the info about the school from the student's perspective. It's one of the shorter interview days because there's no need to talk about financial aid until you've gotten in ect. ect. In any case, you'll get a feeling if the interview goes well or not after. Out of all schools I interviewed at, I felt like PCSOM gave me an unbiased well approached interview. As a student, I have enjoyed my time at PCSOM. Med school has it's highs and lows but the school is small and students help eachother out and we work to help those who are struggling. The professors are very quality in general and have a history of preparing most people for boards. Downside, Pikeville has very little to do outside of hanging out with your friends from school or doing outdoors activities. They do have pretty good concerts that come to the expo center. Also, rotations sites can change from year to year. But once you rotate at a core site then you are there for two years which is good. The rotations are a weak point that they are working to fix. I'll be able to give you the most quality opinion once I've taken boards. Good luck to everyone.

There are generally 20 candidates in an interview group. The interviews are laid back, and they are mostly for confirmation that you are the same in person as on paper. Any other questions, let me know

Just thought you guys might want to know that PCSOM has just announced that we'll be rennovating/constructing a new building. This will house lecture halls, a new anatomy lab, and a state of the art clinical center where the human model program will be run out of. FYI, not many schools have human models and let me tell you. . . you need to practice on real people before you go out there. I don't know when the construction will start but they are working on raising more funds and getting the ball rolling.

The other school is Ohio University. I'm a KY resident... so that makes me lean more towards the KY school. Also, if I were to go to OU, I have to practice in the state of Ohio for 5 years upon graduation or completion of residency, or whatnot. A quick comparison: OU has very nice labs (gross, micro, OMT, ect). Pikeville is smaller, and the lab isnt quite as nice as others i've seen (w/ it being so small). Athens (OU) is a muh larger city than Pikeville, but would have its numerous distractions. The fact is, I'll (or we'll) will be in medical school to study and learn medicine. In that case, either schools will help us accomplish our goals... So really, the glitz and glame of pretty labs means nothing when it comes down the the nitty gritty... Still a tough choice. What really stuck out was the family atmosphere at Pikeville, and the faculty's open door policy... If anyone else has any input, please ellaborate, as I am open ears to anything in making my decision.

FutureDoc,
I was in the same boat, having to decide between PCSOM and OUCOM. It's a tough call. I really liked that Ohio had an abundance of research opportunities, systems based curriculum, lectures available as mp3's and a few afternoons off a week. For me, though, significantly lower cost of attendance, small class size and freedom to do residency/practice wherever I want won out. I don't think you could go wrong either place, it's just a matter of figuring out the best fit. Good luck with the decision, and if you end up going with Pikeville, I'll see you in August.

First, Angel will call for an interview, hopefully everyone will hear something soon. She called me yesterday and said she had a stack of interview invites on her desk. But htat she wouldnt be done with them till Wed. (so hopefully ya'll will get a call next week).

Second, I read somewhere above that PCSOM is getting a human models lab. Is that where students can use the robots? like PCOM's STAN robot? I guess Im not really sure what a human models lab is. the only negative I see to PCSOM is the lack of technology so this would be a big deal!

scdocusc
11-18-2009, 08:45 PM
As I posted earlier. The human model program has just been introduced at PCSOM. It's going better than expected and infact they are building 1-2 new buildings and completely gutting the current building to make room for an expansion of our clinical human model program and clinics. The human model program is where students go into exams individually with a preceptor and are tested and shown how to do exams on standardized patients. This is something not many schools have and is very very helpful in getting exposure to things like prostate exams, breast exams, pelvics, and general well physicals. This prepares you better than robots or models (which we did have at one time). Our school is currently upgrading many of the technological features at the school. PCSOM does not invest money in robots or jazzy stuff that people wont need come time for boards or rotations. They invest in teaching, and students. It's worked very well for 12 years so they're doing something right. To me, this school is strong at the core and ultimately when you invest in people then you get better results than blowing 500,000 dollars on something as pointless as a see-through opp table with a camera or a fancy fountain in a lobby. FYI our students are well respected as well at sites and this very much helps your chance for nailing that good residency.

you will probably see the building in your tenure at the school. We offer spanish medical classes but they are through SOMA and not the school curriculum. Or did you just write it as an essay without a heading and a signature?

They are supposed to start construction this spring/summer. The construction will be in two phases. The standardized patient labs will be built in the first phase. These labs will also be used for our OPP clinic. Our clinic is open Wednesday and Friday to the public by appointment. This gives students a chance to practice everything from taking vital signs to performing OMT.

CK7218
12-06-2009, 05:29 AM
I will not deny the lack of technology when it comes to the robots. But, with that said! I am an OMS I and will be performing my first standardized patient exam tomorrow. As first years, we will also be performing male and female genital/urinary exams in the spring with standardized patients. Robotic models are great, but a real live patient is what you will be treating in the future.

Received an invite yesterday via email. However, I must decline due to travel expenses and my recent acceptances. Good luck to everyone in the current application process.

This amazes me. The MD school myself and several friends applied to is taking months to hear anything at all. And here you get an acceptance in days? wow. I'm impressed.

Stats are super low. GPA is 3.3 and MCAT is 22 or 23. They accept people from mostly KY and the Appalachian mountains.

I was accepted with a 3.1 GPA and a 26 mcat. I am from a large city not in the appalachian area.

when did you get your secondary in? I sent mine in in October and haven't heard anything back. I've told myself it's better than a rejection because I would really love to get an interview!

I had everything in mid October so it took awhile for me to get the interview.

Accepted as well!

About the rotations.

Can you do 3rd and 4th year outside pcsom's CORE areas. For instance if I choose dayton or cinci OH, will I be able to complete all the rotations there or will I have to do some at the CORE areas in KY?

Also, how's the most recent match list look?

you can do all two of your last years at one place. However, sites can change depending on the year. So don't hang your hat on one spot.

I sent in my secondary in Oct and haven't heard anything back yet after trying to call multiple times. I am planning on sending a letter of intent but don't know who I should send it to. Should I be sending it to Angel?

Try calling again Monday. When I called earlier today, Caroline said Angel might be in that day. If she isn't in, then leave a message with Caroline or on Angel's voicemail. They usually return the call. And if not, call back the next day.

You seem very knowledgeable on pcsom. Why is it so hard to get info on comlex pass rates, residency match lists, etc from pcsom????

I would really appreciate if you can post some accurate info on pass rates and match lists besides 2005. The office at pcsom does not respond to me and I have asked many times. This just makes it seem that they are trying to hide something which can't be good. Ignoring is not the way to go.

I'll tell you what I know. The graduating class is the only class right now currently that I've heard pass rate info on It was around 91% I believe. I'm not positive but That's what it has been at PCSOM for a while. For step II is was lower because they changed the CE without informing the proper deans apparently. The school has since beefed up clinical education to meet and exceed higher pass rates. Most info isn't released to us but I've been given some general numbers. This year's match list has yet to come out and last years was not published because of school policy at the time. I hope this helps. If it helps you from my perspective. I feel that PCSOM has prepared me well for boards in micro, pharm, path, biochem, embryo, anatomy, and neuroscience. There are of course some areas that need work like psychiatry ect. But nothing major that you can't get out of Kaplan or 1st aid. In years past there have been students who have taken USMLE and scored over 90th %. So it's all what you make of it.

Thanks for the info, I wished I would have known more of this info earlier because I would have applied and made this school one of my top choices. It is just hard to find info on the school. It seems like a hidden gem.

2 last concerns just out of curiosity scdocusc, I am trying to get this info out there for others like me who needed it:

1. Why do you say the rotations need work or are a weak point? There seems to be a good variety of core sites. Also is it true that you can pick any city in the usa and it may be considered ok for rotations.

2. Can you explain the medical mission trips and expenses associated with them and if the school or student funds them? Where and how often students go? Can you do a medical mission trip as a rotation like other schools?

Thanks scdocusc!

The rotations were like that in the past. You could pretty much go anywhere you wanted. The new dean is looking for more control over students to make the clinical education more consistent. So, there are about the same number of sights but closer to the school. It's not all bad but they are getting some other good sites in and around KY. FYI, fourth year is free range.

The school goes on two mission trips each summer. One group goes to Guatamala for surgery and the main trip is to the Dominican republic. It's through the Christian medical association. It's usually a huge trip that is put together from the ground up. We set up a medical clinic in a place in the DR for three days. You get to see some messed up stuff. All costs are covered by members, however the college gives massive amounts of money to help each year. I think last year it was all free in the end.

Also, the School released the new design for the new medical school today. Ground is going to be broken in Sept and it will be completed hopefully by may of 2012. I'm sure they'll post pics on the site. They are building a 9 story building and expanding the class size in the future. If you apply this year you would be in it more than likely.

Does anyone know the statistics for last year's entering class, in terms of GPA/MCAT? I know the average GPA was ~3.4, but was wondering if it has changed any. I'm applying this summer to begin school in 2011, with a cGPA of 3.33 and 32 MCAT and just wanted to see how my stats compared.

Thanks!

If my memory serves me correctly, there were 72 in my class at the time COMLEX Step I was taken and think 88% passed on first try. I honestly don't know COMLEX Step II results, but if my memory serves once again, I think all but 3 or 4 passed the COMLEX Step II PE on the first try.

PCSOM will get you ready for your COMLEX Step I, Step II and III depend on how well you study during your clerkship/internship years.

I used COMBANK for Step III and it really helped me raise my Step III score.

Your stats are fine. Just get good recommendations from DOs and do well at your interview and you will have an excellent chance. PCSOM is one of the few places that have discovered that MCAT scores don't correlate with how well you will do in Medical School. With the scores I had entering back in 2004 I would still be a first year medical student trying to advance. haha
