So I didn't see a thread for KCOM for the 09-10 application cycle, sooo I think it is time to start one! This is most definitely my top choice right now, so it would be awesome to start talking with people who are applying here! Has anyone completed any supplementels yet??

Phlame217

Applied and supplement completed!

Well sort of. My "Evaluation 1" is still pending, though its been available through Virtual Evals since last wednesday. AMCAS and my other school already got it so I sent KCOM an email earlier today and haven't heard back.

Anyways, my stats are cGPA 3.97 sGPA 3.95 MCAT 27P
I currently work in a research lab, my core is producing a rapid result testing kit for the H1N1 virus which will give results within 10 minutes of taking a blood sample (unlike days for the current one).
Moderate shadowing 80 hrs, etc...

Awesome stats! Sounds like you probably will have no problem getting an interview. I'm still waiting for my primary to be verified! It sucks that my finals for the spring quarter did not get over with until June 12, and we could not even get our updated transcript sent out until June 26 or so. It put me like a month behind! Sigh, so sad. . hopefully I am still pretty early in the game though. I can't wait to get those secondaries though! What were the essay questions for KCOM, if you don't mind me asking??

Nice stats!! I know my evaluation 1 was downloaded last Friday, and I wouldn't worry because the admissions office told me that ;ast Friday was the first day they started downloading letters from virtual evals. They are just now starting to review secondaries it seems.

Thanks for starting this thread! From what I read on their website and on SDN, KCOM seems like a great school, and I really hope that I can get an interview and go visit! My primary just got verified today (finally!), so I am hoping to start the secondary soon!

I'm applying with a 25M (7PS, 9VR, 9BS)...
3.7 cGPA
3.55 sGPA

good ec's (volunteer at a local pro-bono clinic once a week, emergency critical volunteer program, d.o. and m.d. shadowing, lots of fraternity philanthropy experience, etc.)
decent LOR's

Yall think I stand a chance?? I'm a mississippi resident if that makes a difference..

Yeah, I'm anticipating being verified like the first week of August. . .I wish AACOMAS would just hurry up already! I'm tired of checking their website 50 million times a day and ready to start filling out some secondaries! haha

KCOM received all of my supplemental materials last Friday.

By the way, the verification waiting game with AACOMAS sucks. I cannot fathom what it must feel like when secondaries are going out.

Good luck!

Yes AACOMAS verification sucks, but I submitted mid may and was done early june! Still waiting on Eval 1 to be recieved (virtual eval one), I was told however that the person in charge of those was gone this week and they will catch up next week.

What particular qualities do you feel you can bring to KCOM?

What specific experience/exposure have you had with osteopathic medicine? How has this influenced your decision to become an osteopathic physician?

Hello everyone, what did you guys put for the second question? I shadowed a DO but I never witnessed him perform anything very 'osteopathic-like' like OMM, and I heard that many DOs really don't even use it, so what should I even say? I shadowed both an MD and DO and I really couldn't even distinguish between the two... which makes it a hard question

MANY DOs dont use OMM and practice exactly like MDs. The DO I worked with in the Army, I didnt know he was a DO for months afterwards when I saw him sign something. Then starting talking to him and he actually did speak very eloquently about the philosophy.

As long as you shadowed him and get a letter from a DO, it looks better than MD. If he didn use OMM, then oh well. Adcoms realize many DOs dont use it. That shouldn't be your fault!

@droogdoc, yeah... honestly my impression is that DO schools do know that a lot of their graduates dont even use OMM, but this is KCOM, isnt this THE ORIGINAL osteopathic school? its like i'd understand if PCOM or NYCOM doesn't care as much about OMM even though its a DO school but i feel like KCOM would stand by OMM to death. i dunno, maybe i'm just babbling.

Hey everyone, I'm a student here at KCOM. It's true that KCOM has a reputation of having a great OTM dept. You will spend roughly 2 hrs a day, 4 days a week doing OTM in class. So it is stressed at this school. But, every one has a choice of using OMM in their practice. I personally will, but there are many in my class that won't use OMM. It's up to the individual.

KCOM traditionally starts interviewing the first week of October. Good Luck.

Doesnt surprise me. Nova seems to stress it too, they even have an OMM fellowship thing and you are supposedly introduced to those guys on interview day. Guess they are big on it too.

Does anyone know what "quality points" are? If you look at the pdf of the file sent to the schools you applied to, you will find it under the gpa section. Personally, anything called "quality points" based only on gpa kind of freaks me out.

cae2009
07-30-2009, 06:08 PM
Ok I found the answer to my own question:

"I havent been verified, but as far as I know, quality points are a value used to calculate your gpa. It's the amount of total points you obtain before dividing by the amount of credit hours you have taken. It is somewhat hard to explain in words so just follow this example:

If you get an B in a 3 credit course, you get 9 quality points because a B is a 3.0 on the grading scale. So 3 credits x 3.0 scaled points = 9 quality points"

I searched for quality points, and this post came up from DrDre something or other. It is ChocolateBear approved, so I'm going to stick with this definition :)

Phlame217
07-30-2009, 08:22 PM
Quality points calculate your GPA minus any AP CLEP or course work not taken for a grade.

Many schools do fellowships for many different subjects. KCOM is no exception currently they have OTM, Anatomy, and MedEd fellows. It's an opportunity to learn your material better and help the classes that are going through your subject.

"Quality points" are 4 for an A; 3 for a B; 2 for a C; 1 for a D; and, zero for an F. Used to figure numerical GPA.

I chose the host option and would rather avoid the cost of a hotel at all costs. I dont know why there would be any cost attached to staying with a current student. I wish more schools had this option. Not only does it save you money but it also gives you time to see how the student lives and get to know at least one current student.

All my clinical experience has been volunteering and shadowing. The whole section is blank. Also, I have some volunteering that can be verified, but most of my volunteering (Ronald McDonald House, I take meals to up to four families each week, etc) are on my primary. Will they not even look at that?

Help!

Just remember, the good thing about Osteopathic Schools is that they look at your whole picture. Any deficiencies you have in one section of the supplemental can be easily corrected by positives in another. Don't worry...Get your interview, and WOW them there...

Anyone else interviewing on the 9th planning on flying?
I am planning into flying into STL on the 8th, renting a car to drive north to arrive in Kirksville in the afternoon. Then leaving for STL after the interview. If anyone wants to plan on flying into STL as well and riding up together to split the costs of the rental, let me know.

Take this data with a grain of salt, but I wanted to know what SDNers recieved interview invites to KCOM last year, and how many of them got accepted. So I looked at last years KCOM thread and this is what I compiled. . .yes, a bit dorky of me I know!

68 interview invites

27 acceptances
2 rejected
3 withdrawn
5 accepted pending seat waitlist
2 alternate waitlist
29 no response

Again, I probably would not look into these numbers too much. . .ahhh, I am so excited for this interview though! I hate that it is still just over a month away!

I'll be there on Friday, though I opted to fly into Kansas City and drive to Kirksville. It's funny that Kirksville is almost equidistant from three major cities/airports. Either way, it's going to be a three hour drive. Also, when I looked, flying directly into Kirksville was going to be a bit more expensive.

I'd fly into the closest (cheapest) big airport and rent a car. It always makes me comfortable to know I have a car so I can get where I need to go when I need to be there.

Had an interview earlier today thought it went well... posted feedback. I really liked the OMT lab. Since OMT is pushed very hard at KCOM they said they have higher COMLEX scores because all the OMT questions are written by the professors from Kirksville. The A.T. Still museum inside of the school was really cool.

You can book a flight from STL (St. Louis) and fly into Kirksville directly (IRK is the Regional Airport there). It is about $100 round trip through Air Choice One, but if you have issues with flying in a tiny 6-seater plane, then maybe you should rent a car. The flight is only about an hour. The airport is about a 10-minute drive from the campus. The taxi charges $13 PER PERSON, not per trip to/from the airport. Fortunately for me my student ambassador picked me up from the airport, but couldn't take me the day I left. The closest large airport is in Columbia, which according to the students there, is 90 miles away.

I just had my interview on Thursday. I highly recommend staying with a student ambassador, either the night before or the night after your interview, or even both if they let you. They are GREAT about answering questions and giving you an idea of what it's like being a student there. Strong academics, emphasis on OMM/OTM/OMT (they use all of these acronyms), and there is an emphasis on health and wellness for oneself (intramurals, fitness facilities, clubs, support systems). Cost of living is extremely affordable, and Kirksville is clean and safe, though quite small (note: not for everyone). Remember that you are only there for two years, unless you choose to stay for all four. They have agreements with numerous cities which allow you to finish your final clerkship years somewhere else.

My interview was very positive, and involved two hour-long one-on-one interviews, and a 15-minute interview with an admissions officer. My interviewers were friendly and conversational, and I had a strong feeling that they were really interested in getting to know me, not grill me under pressure by firing questions for the entire hour. The tour afterwards was excellent, given by more student ambassadors who were awesome. I highly recommend this school!

kayla- I interviewed on 10/1. The interview day seemed so long, and be ready to do a lot of walking. The interviews themselves are laid back and conversational. The other interviewees I talked to had the same type of experience. You have two 1-hr interviews with faculty (I had one with an Anesthesiologist and a Biochemistry professor) and a 30 min interview with an admissions officer. I was surprised how well each one of my interviewers knew my file. The M.D. quoted a few lines from an LOR from the top of his head so I was impressed by his prep work. The first 2 interviews were very conversational, and my M.D. interview just felt like I was having a casual talk with someone. The interview with the admissions officer is a bit more formal, bu still pretty relaxed. Have good reason as to why you want to be a D.O. and why KCOM. They have nice facilities and a lot of resources for the students, but I don't know if this school is for me. One thing that is nice is that you don't have to worry about setting up rotations, but some people like the flexibility in doing it on their own tho. but overall, I'd say relax, be yourself, know your application well, have a few questions prepared for the Dean and your interviewers, have solid reasons for why KCOM, and don't be afraid to express your concerns for living in Kirksville. They are very good at selling Kirksville to those who are apprehensive about living in the middle of nowhere.

I'm a second year, but the best advice I can give you is to relax, be yourself, and have fun during the interview day. The vast majority of interviewers are extremely friendly and will likely just chat with you for the majority of the interview.

One of the professors put it this way: If you get an interview, you are good enough to get into the program, plain and simple. The interview is more about seeing if you would fit with the program well, and if the Docs could see themselves working with you some day.

Get a good night's sleep, answer every question honestly, and show the interviewers what you can bring to the school (show them what they can't see from your file).

Good Luck, and you will enjoy your time at KCOM.

Wait until the major manufacturers are selling computers with Windows 7. I would highly recommend getting a TabletPC with Office 2010 (when it is released). I'm running the Beta editions of Office 2010 and Windows 7 on my tablet, and it is absolutely amazing!

As far as the brand of the computer, there are many good options. The Lenovo X200 Tablet is about $1700. HP's tx2z laptop is pretty cheap at $800, but is powerful and extremely functional. I would wait until summer to get a computer, because new models should be coming out before you start school.

A couple of people use Mac's, but you will have far fewer headaches with a PC.

Agreed, the interviews at KCOM are very conversational. I even had one of the "tougher" professors interview me and I didn't think it was that bad. Don't stress about it to much, and like rddoms said, be honest! The interviewers were not born last night and have probably heard every answer in the book and can tell if you are genuine or not.

No, the questions are different. From what I remember it was "Here's what you need to finish/take for classes/any other action to continue on in the process". Also, "Are there any other updates to your file?" Or "Is there anything else you'd like the admissions committee to know?"

Wait until the major manufacturers are selling computers with Windows 7. .

God, seriously. I bought a super-duper, sleek awesome PC earlier this year with Vista and I hate it. I've owned 4 laptops now, and this one is the worst by a mile. I don't even know what to do with the thing and could not believe I started seeing commercials for 7 this soon after I had bought this thing with Vista.

One of the campus organizations offers free embroidery w/ membership or you can pay to get them done for I believe 10 dollars, but not for sure. It is up to you if you want it.

10-31-2009, 09:10 PM
So I had my interview on Thursday. . .it definitely was not bad at all, and I got all very anxious for nothing really! The whole day was so great, and I absolutely love KCOM. So, let me tell you a little bit about my interviews. . .

My first interview was with Dr. Roof and anesthesiologist. I think that we had a very good conversation. . .there was no pressure, just me and him talking. He told me straight off the bat that he just wanted me to tell him about myself and we will take the interview from there, and that is what we did. He did have one concern about my application, but when I explained it to him, then he seemed to understand. I kind of felt bad because he got a couple of phone calls during the interview, and I felt like I was taking him away from his job because I am sure he is quite busy with surgeries and his pain clinic. Nonetheless, he was a very very nice guy, had awesome extracurricular interests and just a great interviewer.

My second interview seemed more of a challenge. It was with Dr. Kondershav who had a PhD in Vertebrae Paleontology and taught Histology at KCOM. He asked me the basic interview questions. . why I want to be a doctor, my strengths, weakness, ect. I felt I was not performing as well as I could have due to the anixety, and these basic questions make for quite a boring interview, so I looking for a spot to take over the interview. When I finally did, I was able to ask questions about himself, his research and his interests. From that point on, it seemed like we were having a good conversation, and he was smiling a bit by the end of the interview. It was a very easy interview with a nice, laid back scientist. I just think I could have performed a little better, so I hope it does not hurt me.

The interview with the admissions councilor was easy. . .but do not take this one for granted. They also have input on whether you should be accepted or not. But basically, he just explained the rest of the process to me, the deposit due dates and then asked just a few, very easy questions. He asked me what was the one thing that I could not live without. . .I was totally not expecting that one! So it took me a few seconds of thinking to give him an answer.

Overall, the day went so very well. Everyone was sooo nice. Dean Slocum spoke with us for a few minutes during the curriculum overview, and he was such a cool guy! Like many have said before, the OMM lab is hugeeee, and it is definitely a big subject at KCOM. The town itself is small (takes probably 10 minutes to drive through), but I am a small town kind of guy and I definitely love it. It has a Super-Walmart that is open 24/7 so that is very convient! I am keeping my fingers crossed for an acceptance because this is definitely my number one school!! Anyways, I hoped that helped a little bit for anybody who has their interviews coming up! =)

These basic questions tend to be a big deal, IMO. They want to see if you know yourself, and can show confidence in defining your motivations in life.

Hope you hear the good news. KCOM was definitely my favorite school where I interviewed.

We have heard nothing about video lectures yet. Audio lectures are better, and here's why: You can remove noise, and then use 'truncate silence' in Audacity, which cuts at least 15 minutes of garbage from the recording. Then use WMP to listen to the lecture at double speed, and follow along with the powerpoint. When I interviewed, they were usually back to people within a week, two weeks at the most. I'm not sure if they have increased the time frame this year.

Actually I believe for the class of 2014 KCOM is requiring the students to have a laptop. I was told by one of the admissions staff members that there would be a couple of PC options and one Mac option. The acceptance packet says to look forward to future information about these options.

I flew into St. Louis and hopped a puddlejumper to kirksville. the airplane ride from kirksville to st. louis and back cost $100 total, which is cheaper and easier than renting a car. I think the airline that services Kirkville is Air Choice One.

You will receive all the info from admissions after you pay your deposit and get all your acceptance items squared away. You get a checklist with your acceptance packet of a list of things you have to complete (updated transcripts/background check/etc). IT will send out your atsu email in a few months and then the facebook group will be opened up. Don't get over anxious for school to start...trust me. Enjoy your acceptance/free time/family & friends and worry about school stuff later. You will have plenty of time to line up housing and whatnot later. I know some people that didn't rent places until August and still found great options.

I got a letter in the mail saying my application is on hold. That's better than an outright rejection or a waitlist, but I don't have my hopes up.

haha, I was wondering when somebody was going to call me out on that. I actually made this account before I actually knew that I really wanted DO more than anything in the world. Now my excuse is. . . .well Superman can't possibly ever be a DO because he is way to strong to be able to perform OMM, and he'll end up screwing up the patient even more! Lame excuse? Probably. . .but it is the best I can come up with! :)

I just interviewed on the 12th and it was my second interview. The staff is very nice and the interviews were relaxed. They were more conversations than being grilled on topics. Be honest, relax, and say what you need to say. You'll be fine. The town is small but it's not as bad as a lot of people say. Good luck! Let me know if you have any other interview questions.

I was super nervous too before I interviewed, but when I walked into the school for the first time, all the anxiety just dissipates because everyone is so nice and kind. All of my interviews were extremely laid back and conversational. . .so just relax and be yourself. You will do fine. . .good luck! =)

KCOM is a great school. The small town atmosphere is great for studying and also getting to know your classmates. You will know your classmates very well compared to other schools. The best part is you get to chose where you go for your clinical years. I know that is a long time from what you are thinking now, but do consider it when you apply to other schools. I am a 4th year graduating this year from KCOM and I am glad I chose KCOM as it has prepared me well.

I am going to begin looking at different loan programs and was hoping to get some feedback from current and new students on what they feel is the best route to take for loaning the mojority of the 4 years tuition and related expenses; housing, food etc. Should you go with one complete loan or split it up between different creditors, subsidized/ unsubsidized, blah blah blah. When do you need to have a loan locked in etc?

Go all government loans if possible. There is a maximum subsidized amount, take all of that. Make the rest up with graduate plus loans. There is no need to lock these loans in.

Hi!

Has anyone stayed at the Budget Host Village Inn or know anyone who has stayed there? I interview in Jan, and I'm trying to find a relatively cheap, decent place for my guest to stay since KCOM wasn't able to provide lodging for both my guest and me. If that place stinks, does anyone have any recommendations for somewhere near the school? We'll have a car, so it doesn't have to be TOO close.

Thanks!

I stayed there when I interviewd. I would say it is not a great place to stay. If I was going again by myself I would stay there just because of the price, but my wife did not enjoy the place at all, and I wouldn't say I did either. I am just super cheap so I would stay there just for the price, but not put my wife or anyone else there unless they are super cheap like me.

That bad, huh. We probably won't want to stay there then. It is ridiculously cheap, but if it's not clean and kind of sketchy, then probably not worth the low price. Thanks!

I stayed there when I interviewed and I didn't think it was that bad. Its a bed, a shower, tv, and internet. And for me that was enough. The continental breakfast is a joke so plan on either bringing something or getting something or there are granola bars at KCOM.

I also have stayed at the Knight's Inn which is about the same price and it is also not that bad, a bed/shower/internet/tv/etc.

3.5 science/3.3 overall, 9 on bio and 9 on phys P on writing. Anyways you shouldn't be so worried about it. THe school is really good at looking at the broader picture of the potential student. The school does look at the numbers but it is who you are and what you have done that I feel ultimately determines their decision. As for interview advice; be yourself and show conviction and your passion for medicine. As I am sure you have heard the interview is very relaxed, but I think that is because they really want to know who you are. If they are spending the entire 2.5 hours grilling you all they see is a scared little pre-med student. Good luck, and hope to see you next fall!

Where did you stay while you were interviewing? I opted to stay with a student for the night before my interview, but have not heard back yet. Thanks.

Hi everyone! So I had my interview at KCOM yesterday and was very impressed by everyone at the school. Overall, I really enjoyed my interviews as they were generally pretty laid back. My third interviewer was a little weird though - he basically spent most of the time making sure I knew what I was getting myself into and asking how I thought I would be able to handle this time commitment with a family (I have two little girls) and so I tried my best to convince him that my husband and I are fully committed to this, etc. He also asked me if I thought that since I was a woman with a family should I get special treatment and also if I thought women had a harder time in the profession than men... So this interview was a little more unsettling than the others but he was still very nice - I just hope I was able to convince him! :scared:

I stayed at the super 8. I am a pretty easy going person but I should not have left it up to expedia to book the room as they put me right across from the lobby. All night all I heard was people coming and going and some random TV. All in all I got maybe a half hour sleep before the interview. This may have worked to my benefit, though, because the incredible lack of sleep made me more relaxed and less tense during the interview- kind of a no B.S. straight to the point type of thing. I DO NOT recommend this to anyone else though :D. Good luck.

Oh and to THRASHERS FAN: I have Frolov and Kopitar on my fantasy too- pick up Stoll if you still can
