The application season has started and although last year's school specific threads hold a wealth of info. I'd like to start some dialogue around this years application process! Good luck!:xf:

I guess I'm the only interested in this school, but I'm hoping ya'll will come around  in the meantime I submitted the secondary application today, and realized that there is no secondary fee for this application. This is a good thing, but sort of felt weird to me.... like I forgot something...

Has anyone else filled this out? Am I right that there is no secondary fee?

I filled out the secondary a while ago and you are right, there is no fee. I am not sure when they start interviewing; does anyone else know?

I would have applied to the school last year if the deadline didn't pass considering I am a Texan resident. I think a lot of Texan pre-meds want to try applying to all of the 7 MD schools in the state first.

I have not heard anything about interviews yet, but I did receive a confirmation that my secondary was complete.... There is another discussion about this school occurring in the TMDSAS section of pre-allopathic... maybe someone over there knows?

As I remember I just treated it like a password... that was many applications ago though... anyone else remember what they did?

Hey guys I am applying to TCOM this cycle. The problem is, I am OOS. I noticed that there is very few students accepted at TCOM that are not from Texas. Is this just because OOS people tend not to apply? or does the school intentionally limit the number of OOS students they accept?

TCOM is definately in my top five, I hope I can get in.

From what I know TCOM like other texas schools requires their own primary application which is called TMDSAS (not AACOMAS for DO schools or AMCAS for MD schools). So many people just dont have the time or patience to fill it out. In addition, TCOM only allows, at most, 10% of its seats to out of state students. I think I read somewhere that TCOM gets about 250 OOS applications each year so if you apply your chances are still good.

I've got an invite for 8/6 and they said they would email me the itinerary but I haven't received it yet. Do they just send it out closer to the interview date?

meganmarie
07-27-2009, 08:51 PM
TCOM does only accept about 18 OOS students....at least that is how many they accepted last cycle. However, if you have decent stats, and you think you would really like to go there, apply. I applied and got an interview last cycle...but I ended up being waitlisted. They make two separate waitlists, OOS and IS, so if no OOS'ers give up their seats, you're out of luck. Because Texas schools have their own application and it is to alot of people a big pain to fill out, many OOS'ers don't even bother, giving those that do apply a better chance. Good luck, its an awesome school!! :luck:

With the TMDSAS, you can (probably should!) fill out secondaries before your primary is through with verification. The secondary is online, and the information about it is on this page http://www.hsc.unt.edu/education/tcom/onlineapps.cfm . Good luck!

I just interviewed at TCOM here were some of the questions were:
1. why do you want to be a DO
2. tell me about your experience abroad
3. talk to me about your research
4. Name an instance you failed and what you learned from it
5. Out of technical skill, intelligence, compassion, and integrity which do you want you patients to see in you the most.
6. Out of those same skills, what makes the best doctor
7. What makes a great leader and how you grown from being one
8. How will you practice 30 years from now be different than an identical one now

Wow! Thanks for that... those are pretty serious questions... in previous years at other schools my interviews have been mostly conversational, so I am so glad you posted these or else I would have been totally unprepared.

Fill it out ASAP! No need to wait for your MCAT scores, they know you are taking it and will look out for your scores. It's more important to get your secondary in-and take it seriously, TCOM loves their secondary :)

When I submitted the secondary, it mentioned I need to release my MCAT scores to TMDSAS and to them.

I went to the MCAT THx to see if I could release my scores to the school, and it isn't listed. I'm guessing we really don't need to release our scores specifically to TCOM? Thank you for your help.

How many of you getting interviews haven't gotten DO recommendation letters or did not know if you would have one or not until after submitting your secondary application? I've had my secondary filled out for awhile (still waiting for TMDSAS to be verified though) but have delayed submitting it because I don't know if I'll have a DO letter for sure or not and don't know how important it is that I either A) have a letter but said I didn't in the secondary or B) Don't have a letter but said that I did in the secondary?

I had no DO letter. However, I am very knowledgeable of osteopathy's mission and the benefits it provides to both the medical field and society. I figured that by making that clear in the secondary it wasn't absolutely necessary I get a DO to write a LOR. My interview is scheduled for 9/8.

Check the interview feedback for a complete list. I was asked a couple of hypothetical situations, but mostly my interview was conversational. Why medicine, strengths/weaknesses, how do you work in a group, and specific questions about my personal statement. They have your PS and EC's, but not your GPA or MCAT. They will not ask you anything about your grades.

I stayed at Microtel Suites - Fossil Creek, and it was a good experience.

Hey y'all, my interview at TCOM is tomorrow, 9/24. I'm pretty excited about it, as I am a second time applicant and I am in the Medical Masters program here at UNTHSC.

However, I was wondering if anyone had interviews elsewhere that had similar credentials to me. I really want some other interviews in the state. My TMDSAS verified on 7/20/09.

Credentials: 29Q
3.35 GPA, University of Texas at Austin, Biochemistry,B.S.

I know my GPA is holding me back, big time, but... anyone else out there with similar credentials?

Got my phone interview invite, and I was very excited. However, due to another interview, I was having trouble on the spot deciding on what day would be right for the interview. I hope I didn't leave a bad impression. I didn't receive the email packet or anything yet...did you all receive the email that was supposed to be sent out?

I've checked my status on TCOM's site, and it says I'm invited for an interview. However, I have not received the email 'packet'.

Best of luck to you all. I wish you all the best :)

Has anyone been rejected with with similar stats around the range of TexasPKP and Exalya? Applied early in the season with a 3.5 science, 3.7 overall.

TCOM rejected me through snail mail back in August with no interview. Kind of confused considering that I thought I would at least get an interview here. I got two MD interviews in Texas, and have three upcoming OOS DO interviews. Not sure what happened with TCOM or what I may have done wrong.

Solid EC's - healthcare volunteering, community service, leadership, honor societies, pre-med organization, research, full time job, publication, teaching experience, study abroad. Shadowed both MDs and DOs, sent in a DO letter.

Also already submitted a "file review request" with TCOM to see if they can tell me their reasons for no interview.

 Who knows. Just figured I got unlucky with this one, I am hopeful and will be grateful to get in elsewhere, was just looking forward to TCOM after hearing great things. Oh well!

Have you submitted your secondary yet? You must fill out the secondary before the deadline of October 15th to be considered. Once they get that and your TMDSAS, they will downloaded your files and match everything together. That can take a few days. You should receive another special log-in and password from Admissions that's different from the one you used to create your secondary.

I don't know if you met the anatomy professor guy, but I thought he was great... if the rest of the faculty is like him, it would be awesome. Also, the student guides at my interview said that many people stay home except for certain classes and just watch the lectures online.

I also really liked the technology aspect. It looked like they really take advantage of computers, something that some schools still aren't integrating that fully.

For this anatomy professor, was he younger or older? If it was Dr. Sheedlo (older), rumor has it, and I think he said it, is leaving at the end of the year.

And not to burst anyone's bubble, but the majority of people do go to class. Our current dean says you shouldn't learn medicine virtually, so if there is not a majority of people coming to lectures, we get our recordings stopped. And there are no videos because of literary copyrights? But this might, and I am thinking it will, change with the new dean. But just didn't want y'all coming in not knowing the full story.

It's rough, 8-5, but it's sort of preparing you for the real stuff along the way. I am about 4 months into it, it's a good experience. Crazy how much your learn.

Good luck :luck:

It's rough, 8-5, but it's sort of preparing you for the real stuff along the way. I am about 4 months into it, it's a good experience. Crazy how much your learn.

Good luck :luck:

Yeah my girlfriend is in medical school 8-5, she said its very demanding but I guess 8-5 or 9-1 medical school is going to be demaning;) I just want November 15th to come already!!!

Impatiently waiting too!!! What are you doing to occupy the time?

I'm taking biochem this semester. It takes up some time... but not enough. :P Have you interviewed anywhere else? If so, how do you think TCOM compares? TCOM was my first and I'm VERY impressed, but I have my second interview on Nov. 6th at LECOM-B. Be interesting to see the differences.

I have interviewed at TCOM and will be interviewing at Texas A & M shortly and hope to have some more interviews in-state and one or two out of state. I was very impressed with TCOM and definitely liked how cool the students were. I'm beginning to realize that even if a school is amazing if your class sucks, then the school will equally suck, so I'm strongly leaning towards TCOM. What made you apply to LECOM?

There's an obstacle course all the interviewees have to get through. Bring a blowtorch and some plastic trash bags.

Be yourself! You'll be just fine. Remember, you're interviewing them as well to see if the school is also a good fit for you, not only the other way around.

Dear TCOM,
I have been waiting patiently and still have not heard anything from you. I don't know what I did to incur your wrath, but please, please, please tell me how awesome I am. I just want to lovingly caress your cadavers? and sit through hours of biochemistry lectures. I would go to the far end of the world to do rotations if that would make you happy, but not really, since you're in the middle of a major metropolitan area. I anxiously await an interview invitation.
With much love,

November 15th is coming up for us IS's. Then, the next match day is sometime in February or something, right?

LRAccord624

The pre-match is November 15th for IS's... BUT... I was just at TCOM yesterday interviewing and they do a prolonged pre-match. They said they rarely accept anyone ON the 15th... they could accept anywhere from November15th-December 31st actually. I was kind of surprised about that... and I'm hoping to hear closer to the 15th than December or even February :) but only if it's good news I guess.

LRAccord624

Oh, and by the way, I wanted to remind everyone. It is a horrible idea to talk about bars/going out/drinking while you're sitting in the admissions office. And when you go out to lunch, don't order alcohol.

Someone did this, and it looked really bad to me, which meant that it probably looked worse to the student ambassadors and admissions staff.

Sorry if it was you and you're now reading this, but I thought people should know (even though I thought it was pretty much common sense).

Yeah, I spoke to someone in admissions recently and they said basically the same thing. For the most part, the class is relatively empty. They said they've made a few OOS offers and early offers, but nothing major. They said they review files until December and sent out most of their offers around February 1st.

Hi Guys, I am new on this thread and had a question. I applied to TCOM and checked my status on Friday and it said I have been invited for an interview. I was not contacted over the weekend nor today over the phone. Do they take awhile to call after they update your status page? What time of the day did admissionscall the people who got invited for an interview? I might give them a call tomorrow if I don't hear anything from them. Thanks

my.hsc.unt.edu... somehow try to set up your account. I had to call the IT to get my pin number. They will need to verify your EUID(?) and user name. Set your password and then you can proceed to sign in and check the status of your application.

kingM

You should check your email to setup that account. You should have received an email from TCOM to fill out their secondary online and in it they tell you your pin number and procedure to set it up.

For those who haven't gotten an invitation yet- Keep on checking your status page online. I apparently received a call from admissions and no one was home, so I didn't even know I was invited until I decided to randomly check my status page.

Anyone else interviewing on Nov 24th? Good Luck to everyone

Hmm. Not a mass email, because I would have gotten it, BUT someone in another thread said they emailed TMDSAS to ask about this. They said pre-match begins at noon on November 13th. I wonder if TCOM will change their minds and start on the 13th- Mike Kennedy told us he doesn't like the idea of other schools giving acceptances unless he is at the same time. Apparently one school (UTH?) gave out acceptances on December 31st one year while he was watching football and it really bothered him. Haha!

Day of the interview is when you'll know.

My interviewers asked pretty standard questions. Why medicine, Why DO. though, as for the DO question, one interviewer was an MD and he said before he asked the question (why DO) that it really didn't matter.

Pretty standard questions. Other interviewer went through all of my ECs/Work experience/Research and asked questions about everything I had put down. Scholarship... everything.

When you walk into the admissions office that morning, they give you a folder that has your schedule for the day. You might interview as early as 8am or throughout the day- I think the last one was at 2:45. Mine were at 8:45 and 2. Both of my interviewers asked pretty similar questions, although the conversations went in different directions pretty quickly. It was relaxed. Oh, and lunch at the botanical gardens was definitely the best kind of lunch offered for an interview day. ever.

It's my understanding that TMDSAS gives the schools the option of sending acceptances starting Nov 13th. However, not all the schools are exercising this privilege. It's crazy that the admissions office told you the acceptances were being given on the 13th, when the same office told me they would wait till the week of the 16th. I asked a few weeks ago, so they might have decided to change their minds since then.

So I think that they keep on changing their minds on the day, how many people are getting in, etc... Good luck everyone, I was told that around 100 people were going to get acceptances. I had two completely different interviews. One was rather serious with lots of difficult questions. It actually was more than an hour because it was my last interview of the day when the interviews are supposed to be 30 mins. I was pretty much grilled on tons of random stuff (how the heck do I know the Hippocratic oath already or how much money is allocated to medicare/medicaid??). The other was rather short (25 mins maybe?) and the interviewer said "oh, you can talk about whatever you like...I'm not going to ask you any questions because everyone always has rehearsed answers." Believe me, it was rather hard and awkward for me to talk about myself nonstop.

For being the first school I interviewed, I was completely surprised and not prepared for the interviewers I got. I think it will be a miracle if I get into this school even though this is my number 1 choice....

TCOM seemed a little more formal than my other interviews actually. The first one, I got asked normal questions + some tough ones but it was very conversational. The second one was pretty intimidating --> question, answer; question, answer (and mostly hard questions too) etc. But finally we found something personal that we had in common and it picked up from there. Although the interviews were kind of tough, both people were very nice and I would say overall i was not too stressed. Lynn Scott makes you feel very confident from the moment you walk in the door. Don't worry! It will be fun!

On that note, don't forget how fun all this is everybody! I think sometimes people get so worried/nervous etc that they forget- this is one of the coolest times of your life. You have worked really hard to go to medical school, and now you are actually interviewing for it. Pretty cool I think.

Thank s mrpuff and LR and good luck to you both. I am late in the cycle and this is my first interview coming up and really want to do well. I am a bit nervous now that you have told me that some of them can be intimidating.

I guess just a couple of unexpected, 'out-of-the-blue' questions... I am having a hard time remembering specific ones. I was so nervous before my first interview- I literally tried to research every single question they could possibly ask me. Then when I got there (actually to my first interviewer's office), I realized that she was just a really nice doctor who wanted to get to know me a little better. The tough questions were about myself (the interviewer was really trying to analyze my personal qualities), and I had one semi-ethical question about the doctor patient relationship.

I was somewhat surprised to go to a DO school and not talk to a DO (both interviewers were MDs), but a doctor is a doctor and I like to see when people are working together effectively and efficiently, despite the different initials at the end of their names.

It really wasn't bad at all. You'll do great.

Hey guys,

First year TCOM student here and just wanting to wish everyone the best of luck on pre-match november. Just felt like I would tell those anxious beavers out there that last year I found about my pre-match the day before they started calling people online at the secondary application page.

For people who don't want to look that up the link is https://my.unt.edu/psp/papd01/EMPLOYEE/EMPL/h/? Login with your login (if you don't have in you can create one right under the sign-in box by clicking EUID). Go to the HSC Admissions tab and then click on application status and hopefully you'll see "Congratulations......." They'll update this before they call you but try to act surprise if you do find out before they do call (Here at TCOM we try to keep things personable, feeling a phone call is better than an email.)

Again best of luck everyone on their application process and hope to see this thread come alive in the next couple days with good news.

Do any current students have any information on the ROME Program? I was overjoyed on Friday when I learned I had been accepted to TCOM, and now am hoping to get a little more understanding as to what the timeline will be for learning if I will have the opportunity to be a part of ROME. I had my interview with the directors on my interview day, and it seemed to go very well. I'd also really love to get a ROME student's perspective on what the program has been like for them so far.

Also, for current students, are there any specific apartments that TCOM students live in? I'd like to start looking to get that set up, but have no idea where to begin. Any feedback at all would be really appreciated!

I was going to wait until tomorrow, but what the heck, who needs a good grade on the last neuro test

School-Overall, for me, it has been a good experience. I really enjoy my class-and your classmates have a lot to do with how your experience goes, btw. If you work hard, pretty much any opportunity will be available to us afterwards-and this goes for any school, DO or not. I am suuuuure they told you, but TCOM has had the highest averages on the COMLEX the past couple of years, and from a presentation given to us after orientation, we're getting state averages on the USMLE. Because of OMM, even if you aren't into it, you become more comfortable interacting with people you don't know and touching patients in the future will be no biggie. I like Fort Worth a lot-grew up in west TX, and went to UT to give you a perspective.

Schedule-yeah this is rough. After the first 5 weeks, you are pretty much in class/labs/OMM/clin med 8-5. I don't know how the replacement dean is, but our old dean would take away recording privileges if people didn't show up to class. It'll be interesting to see if this changes. But, IMO, it's preparing you for the real world.

Exams-we break down the curriculum into systems. Start off with cell science (cell bio, genetics, biochem), go on to MSS, Neuro, cardiopulmn, etc. You get the histo, embryo, anatomy, all relevant to the system at that time. You get quizzes dispersed once or twice a week, and major exams every 2 (sometimes every) weeks. I personally have compared this with my friends who have blocks of tests and I feel like this way is more manageable. They don't give you time to slack off. But-you also don't get many off weekends, since most tests are Mondays.

Facilities-the PTR rooms are fine, I personally don't feel like anything in gross lab is lacking, and I don't get to see the sim lab until this week ;) And supposedly that new building will be done for next year's class, so y'all get the nice big lecture hall. Our library is legit-they changed it to 24 hours this year, only first floor though. But if you are studying through the night, you probably have already snagged a table. No cafeteria, so bring your lunch, or eat out at the restaurants around. There is this food service downstairs-they bring italian, chinese, bbq, etc and each day it's something different.

ROME-the afternoons we have off, you don't. But you get to do pretty cool things-they have had a suture lab already, they've been to Lubbock for something...., they did an emergency dept rounds, etc. I am not the best person to tell you about it, but contact the school and ask for a name and you can email someone in the program.

Apartments-Ridglea Village, Cumberland, the Canyons...at preview day apartments come out to campus and offer some pretty good deals.

I'll elaborate more when I have time, for now, hope it helps, and PM for anything :)

Congrats to all!

i got my interview today but was not asked any questions about why DO in any way... both were quite conversational and both interviewers asked me questions pretty closely related to my personal statement....

did everybody get the "why DO" or similar question? because i try to find ways to explain i'm interested in DO, but there's not really a good opportunity to exert that... which i found really strange in the TCOM interview

Hey thanks for posting this....Can you please leave an interview feedback for more details on your interview (Click on the link all the way on top, you will also find the type of questions others were asked there)..I have an interview on Tuesday and I am trying to prepare for it...Did both of your interviewers make you feel comfortable and did you feel like they were just trying to see what you wrote was true and didnt find it necessary to ask WHY Medicine or DO(maybe u just made it crystal clear to them in your essays :))?

Just to help you out a bit, here's how mine went down with each interviewer.
1) Had notes on my app (personal statement, mostly) and asked questions about many individual areas of the PS. Asked what interested me about osteopathic medicine. Asked about health care reform.

2) Asked the why doctor question. Proceeded to selected random questions from a list/packet of questions he had (some ethical).

So, yeah, I WAS asked about the whole osteopathic thing. However, my answer was not a long spew about how DOs were better than MDs or anything like that. Perhaps some people go that route, but I think it's safer to simply establish a few things without getting into which ideal set is best:
*It's a great medical school (don't have to mention it's DO....it's MEDICAL school)
*It offers a rational, logical method to medicine (this IS complimenting the osteopathic approach), and it is evident that it is working since so many other schools in Texas and around the country are beginning to use some of the same approaches.
*Everyone I've read about that has come here really enjoys/enjoyed this school.
*The school obviously has a great track record for putting out wonderful primary care docs.

See, so really only one of those bullets refers to the methodology of osteopathic medicine. Moreover, even that bullet explains that other schools (the MD schools) are starting to incorporate that mindset of holistic medicine.

These are just my ideas about this question. I hope it helps. All I'm saying is that you don't have to go on about how osteopathic medicine is the best. Just respect it, treat it as it should be treated - as a medical school that will make you a DOCTOR. I even admitted that while I truly believe in the whole-body approach, I really didn't know much about manipulative medicine. My interviewer was completely cool with that.

Oh, I was accepted here. That doesn't mean I did well with this question, but it certainly means I didn't completely bomb, haha. BEST OF LUCK BUD!!!!

Got an acceptance via email on the 13th. :) Extremely happy to be attending TCOM, 'twas my first choice! As for my interview experience (to those interviewing) it was very chill. An MD and a Ph.D., both of them were kind and helpful. I think being sincere is really what they're looking for; my interviewers were more concerned about my personality than anything else.

I didn't do any independent research, I was just a lab tech for a few years, and assisted on a number of projects. The Ph.D. I had asked me a couple of questions about my research experience, but honestly... she asked most of her questions about my writing, because I mentioned that it was a hobby of mine on TMDSAS. Wanted to know what my stories were about, who my heroes were... it was very surprising. Be ready for anything that's on your application!

So, yeah, I WAS asked about the whole osteopathic thing. However, my answer was not a long spew about how DOs were better than MDs or anything like that.

To add to this, when I interviewed here, one of my interviewers was an MD and when I finished answering the DO question and in the course of the conversation she did jokingly talk about how sometimes applicants sit there and talk poorly about MDs not realizing that they are interviewing with an MD and not a DO.

All your interviewers have seen is qualitative stuff: PS, TMDSAS primary, and your secondary.

They REALLY stress that they want to get to know you as an individual- if they invited you for an interview, they are already okay with your numbers. Now it's time to see if you would fit into the program. So, don't mention your numbers unless they ask for some reason. My first interviewer went on and on about how the last person she interviewed talked about their numbers and that really disappointed her (eek!). I felt bad for that guy.

Good luck to those interviewing soon!

I also looked back at last years thread. There was a second batch of acceptances sent out on Dec. 8th (a Monday) and a third on Dec. 19th (a Friday). According to one of the people from last year they review people in order of when they interviewed, but they re-review them again for each consecutive pre-match session.

That being said, I interviewed on August 14th - so apparently they reviewed my application already for the first pre-match. Hopefully I'll get another look before the pre-match is over.

Also, someone said that they fill about half of the seats through pre-match and half through the match, so if they split it up evenly they give out about 1/6 of the seats each pre-match session. Last year they closed the campus on Dec 22nd for the holidays, so we should all know about the pre-match results before then.

This is all info from last year so it may not be the same. Good luck to us all and happy holidays!

Ok, So I interviewed with the school on november 3rd. My status online says under review and complete.

I have a 3.22 CGPA, 3.3 sGPA, 33P MCAT. I am graduating this month with a B.S. Biochem. I have 1.5 years undergrad research experience, plus I am a registered EMT. No shadowing though, but some hospital experience.
I think I did OK on the interviews. I made a couple mistakes though, like mentioning that my dad (who is a physician) was one of my early inspiration to be a doctor (it may have come off as if I was pressured into premed). No other interviews in Texas(allopathic). This was my only osteo school, but I really liked it. Changed a lot of my misinformed preconceptions about D.O.'s.

Does this look good for an acceptance?

Additional info.(don' read if you have a life)-My first interviewer was a psych M.D. She had a thick eastern euro accent I think. She would ask questions intended " to figure out how I think". Like she gave me a scenario where a girl was hurt and asked me what I would do(while we were discussing my work as an EMT). So I discussed how I would help her, but what she was looking for was that I would ask the girl her name.
She also asked about Healthcare reform and Obamacare. I gave a long answer basically saying that I didn't believe that Obamacare(I never used the words Obamacare) would help, but hurt and outlined a better plan. My answer boiled down to I thought the only ppl that should have a say in pt care should be doctors and pts. noone else(insurance companies nor the gov). And that pt care should always come first.
Overall the interview was kinda tense. She was hard to read(and I'm an excellent poker player) and she seemed to be digging for or leading me to one right answer rather than analyzing what I said.

The second interviewer was a female, Ph.D, Biomed engineer. Nice and relaxed. Talked about her kids, my research etc. I discussed how I had never had to try at school before and how I struggled at to learn how to study and focus and how I improved (my GPA freshman year 2.8). I am very left brained so I related to her a lot better.

I had your first interviewer as well; interviewed October 27th. Man, it was a little difficult to talk to/understand her. I think it went okay though. She also asked me some ethical questions- more about the patient-doctor relationship. But every time I answered her question, she said, "oh good, that is exactly the answer I was looking for"... So I think it went well.

The next interview... I did not feel like it went so well. There were lots of very difficult questions and zero conversation. We finally found one subject to converse about but it was just question-> answer->question->answer.

Yes, but they also set aside 10% of the seats to be filled by the Medical Master's program... If there are not enough qualified applicants, then they open up the 10% to all applicants---however, there are 100 of us this year---and there are LOTS of amazing applicants... so, I am thinking you are looking at 90% total.... last year I think 30 Medical Sciences students ended up getting into this years first class.

For those of you beginning to worry.....

I am not sure if they said this at all of the interviews.. so I will post it just in case.....

Mr. Kennedy mentioned that they will offer acceptance to approximately two-thirds of the students that interview...elsewhere, the highest I have heard so far that compares to that is one school that offers to half of students that interview.... So, I think TCOM interviews somewhere around 700-ish and offers acceptance to ~450 students...

so, two-thirds is a great number! I believe this number includes all offers they generally make throughout the application cycle.

beachbum24

It's strategic... not every student a medical school offers to is going to accept the offer for that seat. Lots of offers will go to students who pre-match at several schools or who are considering OOS medical school acceptances. As accepted students notify TCOM that they are going elsewhere, TCOM will offer those seats to other students.... That is how the number gets to approximately 400 or so.....

You are correct however that the FINAL class size will be just over 200... I think it is set to max out at 220--if they don't already have 220 in the class.. I can't remember.

I'm OOS and I interviewed on Nov 6 and was told I should hear back beginning to mid-December. I know it is still a little early, but I've been getting antsy because I've been accepted to another school and have to put down a $1000 deposit next week to hold my spot. Texas is my top choice though so if I get accepted after turning in my deposit I'll be happy to forfeit my deposit, but I'd rather keep my $1000 if I could.

Anyways, I called the admissions office and talked to Lynn this afternoon and she said they've been kind of running behind but the committee will be meeting next week and then before Christmas. I wanted to pass this info along to any other OOS people who are waiting to hear or IS people hoping for a pre-match.

I emailed TCOM earlier this week about the ROME program. It took them 4 days to get back to me. So I'm guessing they are prettty backed up. This is what they said "You have already been reviewed by your
committee, and no new information can be presented to them. If you do
receive an offer from TCOM, you may then pursue ROME."

I guess this means I didn't prematch. I used to be so laid back. Waiting for the MCAT scores and to hear back from med schools has made me so OCD and neurotic. Looking back at my GPA though, I wish I had been a little more OCD and neurotic.

Looking back at last years thread they should have sent out prematches last week, but they seem to be backed up(expanding the class and building a new building).

The due date for the secondary was a while ago. They called me less then a week after I sent it in. I believe they have sent most interviews out, but they are expanding their class size quite a bit and I assume that after match and prematch they are going to have trouble filling it, so I would expect some more to go out after christmas and after match.

when is the last day to send interview invits here?

I called to ask about this, and the woman said that technically, all of the interview invitations have been sent out, however they reserve the right to send more out if they need to. She said for the first time since she had been working there, she expected that they would send some more out. They were short on interviews due to faculty and scheduling issues. So it sounds like anyone who hasn't heard anything yet is on "pre-interview hold."

I'm trying to decide the order to rank my schools for the match, and I interviewed here back in early August...

I'm sure if you contacted admissions you could arrange to go on a tour/look around. I've been thinking of going back... but just because I'm so excited and want to be *present* in a medical school which has accepted me. ^.^ Anyway, the admissions people were so nice, I'm sure they would oblige you.

I'm in the same boat, panasonic - they received all of my stuff on Nov. 16. I contacted them on Dec. 5 or so, and Lynn said that if I haven't heard anything back then that I probably wouldn't be receiving an interview this year.

I called for the same reason and I spoke to Mike about this. He said that they might send some out next week before break and that he wasn't sure. It seemed like they don't want to give a lot of pre-match offers out next week, since I guess they gave a lot out in the first batch already. I hope we all get an offer next week though! Does anyone else still not have TCOM listed on their TMDSAS match list who interviewed there? I interview 11/3 and it i not yet on there. I emailed them both, but only TMDSAS has gotten back to me saying that I need to contact the school.

Another question about match. Do we need to send a written match list to TMDSAS? What is the specific procedure if we match at TCOM for match and acceptance?

Hey yea def. contact TCOM ASAP. I interviewed dec. 1 and TCOM has shown up in my match ranking list. Also my understanding is you go onto TMDSAS and rank your schools before jan. 15 and then sit back and wait until feb. 1, you don't have to submit it in writing or anything. Correct me if i'm wrong but make sure you get ahold of tcom before jan 15 so you can rank them! Good luck!

But last night I checked my TMDSAS application, and the school name and rank are no longer listed. There's nothing there! I am freaking out and VERY concerned something went wrong. SORRY, I read your post wrong :(

I thought it was the only school you pre-matched at. Sorry I don't know how I did that. I just knew they sent the form to my school address and I was at my parents house so I had to go up in person and sign it.

That is really weird it disappeared; I don't think any of us will know what to do. None of the schools I interviewed at disappeared. I think you'll just have to wait for a response from TCOM/TMDSAS. I know today is a federal holiday, but just in case the admissions office is open, you should call them. If it's closed, call tomorrow ASAP.

Hope it works out, Good luck! :xf:

Ok so I finally got in touch with both TMDSAS and TCOM.....apparently TCOM reviewed my file extensively and concluded that I am not going to be considered for acceptance any longer and that's why the school and rank was removed from my TMDSAS application. Um this was VERY shocking and extremely upsetting. Mike Kennedy told me that they usually contact me before the school is removed, but because of MLK day, I wasn't notified before. He told me that I would be a good candidate for the UNT medical masters program, and should apply next year. I was not even aware that they could reject applicants before match day, but i guess they can and they do....

@texasgirl: What were your stats? That is very weird if they interviewed you and then rejected you this late. Something must have come up.

To anyone else: After I interviewed TCOM never showed up on my TMDSAS match list. After I called and emailed them all, it was corrected. TCOM said that the mistake was on TMDSAS not them and TMDSAS said to contact TCOM. I don't know whos fault it was, but it was fixed on time. Good luck to everyone to on Match!

thanks for posting jbp, I'm curious where you and other tcom students did the majority of your clinicals? Are most at JPS?

Of the almost 2 years of clinical rotations I have now done (WOW!), I have done 3 whole months at JPS and parts of other months.

Meaning, I was on a JPS only service for 3 months (Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, and ER). The parts of other months have been if I am working with a UNT doctor or another private doctor who works there sometimes but not all the time.

However, I have some classmates that have had a lot more time spent there on surgery, radiology, OB-GYN etc. I don't dig the county hospital so I have tried to avoid it mostly!

We have 2 other main affiliated hospitals, Plaza Medical Center (which is where all the osteopathic programs moved to when OMCT shut down) and some affiliation with Methodist Hospital in Dallas.

Some of the rotations are with doctors who are in private practice, so you go where they go!

Hope this helps! :luck:

This is very rotation specific. Family medicine (100% outpatient with no weekends) is lighter than inpatient medicine (Q5-Q6 overnight call with only 4 days off the whole month).

They say learning how to work under stressful conditions is good for you. I guess I will find out soon! I am going in to Internal Medicine by the way, so if anyone has any specialty specific questions, I would be happy to answer them (any specialty, as I considered all of them at one point or another!!!).

Did you already interview for ROME?

Daedra22
01-27-2010, 09:31 AM
What is ROME?

The rural medicine program. I'm not doing it, but I did consider it when I applied...

The overall goals of the ROME curriculum are to:

1. provide educational experiences that will enable the student to acquire the

knowledge and skills necessary for a professional career in rural medicine;

2. provide a foundation for life and practice in a rural community; and

3. prepare the graduate for acceptance into premier graduate medical education programs.

The Rural Osteopathic Medical Education of Texas (ROME) curriculum gives students the real-world experience of living and working in rural Texas. The teaching progoram of this curriculum has been designed to encompass the overall goals of the institution in assisting students to acquire competency in clinical medicine.

So I contacted Ms. Scott and she helped me to be able to go back and interview with Dr. Bowling. I was not accepted when the interview for ROME was set up, although I found out I was accepted to TCOM the day before the interview. Be persistent about following the progress on getting a ROME interview set up, because there are things you have to do before school starts. Good luck, I hope to see you in ROME.

TO ALL THOSE ACCEPTED: CONGRATULATIONS!!! Get ready for one of the craziest rides of your LIFE :p

You are wondering how you can prepare???

TAKE THE BEST VACATION OF YOUR LIFE. Honestly. Whether it be exhilarating or down right laziness, just take it before school starts.

I took a pre-mat class that helped me get back in the groove of being in class, but didn't really put me at an advantage for the class. TCOM prepares you for the madness with a long orientation week...I honestly don't think reading or studying something before will help you. When time gets closer-mentally prepare yourself for school-really long weeks. They start off nice and easy, so you get out at 2 or 3...then they hit you with the 8-5 later on.

BTW-I am having a blast. Sometimes too much fun-all after test days of course

Questions? PM me, or ask here and I'll respond so everyone sees!

Hello Future TCOMers-

Congratulations on your acceptance to TCOM and welcome to the beginning of a long but extremely rewarding career. I hate to spam your thread, but I will be moving off to begin residency training soon and I will be having to sell my house.

Some quick info:
This a 3BR/2BA with around 1800 SF in North Fort Worth (Keller/Saginaw area) in a safe neighborhood with excellent schools.

The house was built in 2005 and has a full 2 car garage with a HUGE backyard.

Of note, we currently have an FHA mortgage that is capable of being assumed, meaning that you could own the house with zero down payment and zero closing costs (PM me for details) and basically just take over our mortgage payments (which are fixed at a 6% interest rate).

If any of you is interested, please PM me and I can send you some pictures or if you are in the area, we can arrange a time to show you the house.

I would rather sell to a TCOM student than have to go through the hassle of hiring a real estate broker! Plus you could end up with a heck of a deal!

Thanks!

Jerod

Keep me posted.

Yasepicito, that's amazing! I did't know they did interviews this late. Some pointers:

-know a decent amount about the school
-be able to talk about osteopathic medicine (differences between DO and MD)
-you might get a question about health care reform so be sure to read up on it a little. they dont expect you to be an expert, but you should have an opinion (pick a middle of the road opinion so you don't offend anyone)
-be able to defend any weak spots on your application. did you make a bad grade? explain why and what you did to better yourself
-and most importantly, just relax and be yourself. don't be afraid to ask the interviewers questions about their positions, research, etc.

goodluck!

Just got a call today for an interview...totally surprised, but in a good way! Only problem is I have an interview with Western the same day they are offering me an interview :scared:TCOM is my top choice, but if I cancel my other interview at Western, I won't get another date! Any advice??

hi daisy, did TCOM tell you that this was the only date available? when i asked them to reschedule my interview back in october, they were more than happy to do so. if it's the only slot TCOM has, then I would reschedule your Western interview.

I think they continue to interview for several more months. You could call and explain the situation or just be vague and say its for personal reasons. Whatever you decide, I hope it works out. Goodluck!

Yeah, I asked and she said 18th was it. You were probably able to reschedule because it was so early in the cycle. I would think that Western would still be interviewing...? I dunno, I will probably try and re-schedule with Western, thanks for the advice!

Does anybody know how the post-interview committee works at TCOM? Do they put weight only on the interview in making their final decision, or do they look at stats again also? I feel so lucky to be getting an interview even after match day, just curious as to what my chances are at this point! Anybody get rejected post-interview because of grades/mcat? I ask because I am slightly below their averages, but have high hopes for this interview!:xf::luck::xf::luck:

Both schools I interviewed at (TCOM and an MD school) claimed that once you make it to an interview, your grades no longer really matter. The strength of your interview is all that matters. However, I am somewhat skeptical of this. Even if they do not actively re-examine your grades/MCAT, they must be in the back of the mind of the committee.

I am well below the average gpa and only slightly above the average MCAT. One of the admissions personnel said that they really liked my personal statement, and I also think that I interviewed well. So I would say that stats still matter, but the most important thing at this point is the interview. Your case is very unique so it's hard to comment on your chances, but TCOM offers admission to almost half of the people they interview. Those are some pretty good odds!

Why was your interview cancelled? Due to the weather or are they done with interviews?

The roads are expected to ice over late tonight/early tomorrow. I just heard from my friends at TCOM that their classes were canceled today and tomorrow, meaning a 4-day weekend....

Yes! I thought my dilemma was over, but now I don't know when they're going to reschedule! I'm not surprised though, they almost got a foot of snow in Fort Worth, conditions were pretty bad.

Dazedaisy and Yasepicito:
Sorry they had to cancle; but at least they will re-schedule...Good luck! What does your status say online? Mine still says "pending outcome of Feb 1st match". I don't know what that means... I applied rather late, but am still hoping for an interview.

I just had in interview yesterday with a group of 16 students. The interview was really laid back and went great!!! I really want to go here!!!

Well, right now there are 156 people in the facebook group...I don't know if this is a completely accurate count, but I guess close enough. I remember during the interview day Lynn mentioned the incoming class would be 200 people this year.

Yeah, it's probably pretty close. The facebook group link was sent in a mass-email to all of the accepted members of the class, so most of them probably joined.

Anyone know when the late-interviewers will hear back?

I think I spotted a good 10+ in the group who are 1st or 2nd years...most of them were classmates of mine from MedSci last year.

Have any of y'all applied for scholarships at my.hsc.unt.edu? I filled out the scholarship app, but I'm confused about whether or not we're supposed to write an essay.

I was also wondering about the scholarship application. Are we supposed to answer the questions from the perspective of a TCOM student? What I mean is for like the 'academic achievements' section, can we list stuff from our undergrad? This is similar with employment, etc. I hope that just made sense...

I did the scholarship application in January, and as I recall, I only had to submit 1 essay. I forget which one it was. The people at financial aid are super helpful, you should email them to ask what you should be writing about. :)

I just listed my undergrad stuff. On the question about where I will practice, I just put something about how since I haven't begun my medical education I have not made a decision regarding that, but I'm currently interested in practicing IM or OB/GYN in North Texas, etc.

I just finished my essay, but we have to include our student ID on it...does anyone know where to find this? Thanks!
