I would like current/former resdients or even people who interviewed at these programs to give their impressions about these programs in terms of workload (malignant,cush, in btw), faculty support, and general feel. Ive heard some good things about the Galveston program but virtually nothing about the Austin one. Thanks in advance. Just for reference I am currently not sold on any particular path - primary care, hospitalist, or fellowship.

UTMB Galveston is in a grey zone right now. Post-Ike, it could go either way. On one hand, it could end up a really solid program like it was, or even better. On the other, the patient volume and faculty might not make it back to pre-Ike levels, and the program maybe become mediocre.

UTMB Austin is probably not worth your time if you are a reasonably competitive AMG who has any thoughts at all about possible fellowships.

Specifically on -

1. The post-hurricane stabilization of the departments
2. Medical school moving to UTMB Austin
3. Fellowship potential

The medical school is not moving to Austin. The medical school has stabilized well since the storm. The biggest change I've seen is that the clerkships have become less centralized on the Galveston island. Students are completing parts of some rotations on the mainland and elsewhere.

UTMB residents are rotating at hospitals in the Texas Medical Center. UTMB is discontinuing its Austin operations at the end of October 2009 - UT-Southwestern will take over all Austin residency programs. The Austin program has always favored primary care, but UTSW-Austin will attract those who want to fellow.
