For this episode, aptly titled "A Real WHO's Who," we were joined by regular CNN medical correspondent Dr. Martin Makary (above), the Chair of Gastrointestinal Surgery and Director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Surgical Outcomes Research. He spoke to us about the work he has done with the United Nations World Health Organization (WHO), with regard to maximizing patient safety and quality of care.
Dr. Makary has in fact authored a number of books about those topics and public health and offered some great insight into the work he does. We particularly enjoyed our discussion of the importance of a simple "checklist" used in surgeries -- and how many lives that checklist may now be saving. If you missed it on Sunday, be sure to check out the podcast! Also, there is an opportunity towards the end of the program, as always, to win a Barnes and Noble gift card by correctly answering our Case of the Week, so be sure to send in your responses if you think you know the mystery diagnosis.
Up next: This coming Sunday (September 6, Labor Day Weekend), our special guest will be Dr. Anthony Acinapura, a highly accomplished cardiothoracic surgeon in New York City. More information about that episode will be posted later in the week, but remember, live streaming audio will be available on Sunday at 12 p.m. ET, on the Radio Rounds blog (http://radiorounds.blogspot.com/).
