View Full Version : Would this have killed my chances at med-school?

Ugh, last night was by far the scariest night of my life. I was at a party, and I was a designated driver for my buddy. I had a little to drink, but very little. Unfortunately a kid had left and hit another car in the apartment's driveway and a cop saw him! He got a dui and the cops were somehow able to get a warrant to break into the apartment for alcohol. As I saw the sirens I right away ran upstairs into my buddies room, locked the doors, and turned off the lights, and jumped into the attic. My buddy came up stairs and I let him in, and let this girl in cause she was frantically knocking and I felt bad, (she turned out to be the hottest girl @ the party, she's a S.I. swimsuit model), we all fell asleep right away (or at least pretended). Everyone at the party who was underage got an MIP and the kid who hit his car got a DUI. I lucked out, I felt very bad for everyone else, but I really am lucky that I was able to keep a level head. We are all in awe as we went to pick the kid up from the police department today, knowing he will for sure be kicked out of the athletic team he plays for in our university, and knowing that his life is basically over and he will not be able to drive for an entire year and what-not.

I have officially learned my lesson about underage drinking. However, I am just curious as to what the consequences would be regarding med-school and an MIP or DUI. How close was I to ruining my med-school dreams? I read on the MSAR that not all schools do a criminal background check on their applicants, does that mean that you can still get in even with a DUI?

It would likely be very very hard to get in with a DUI. Even a MIP would probably be tough, as you'd have a lot of explaining to do.

MIP isn't that bad. Seriously...even doctors drank in college, sometimes it's just a matter of bad-luck.

DUI is though. That's just bad judgment.

MIP: non-issue

DUI: would make things very difficult

That was what I was thinking. You don't want either, though. An unblemished record always trumps a blemished one.

If you get a DUI once you're in medical school, would you be expelled?

After an MIP you'll need a few years with no other blemishes on your record before it becomes a non-issue.

Don't know if it would've but it definitely should've.

They seriously gave EVERYONE an MIP? that means they had to breathalize everyone because it's not illegal to simply be present at a party if you're under 21. Even if they did, they probably wouldn't give everyone an MIP, but would've given a ticket to >21 fellow who bought the alcohol. In any case, an MIP won't hurt that much... a DUI, on the other hand, can very well crush your chances at med school. Even if you're already in med school and get a DUI, you will probably get expelled (no joke, I know of such situations... at top 10 schools too. It's really very sad)

mips are not a big issue, admissions officers always say that mip is not really going to affect your application unless you have repeated problems or other run ins with the law

plus in most cases, if you do probation you could get it dismissed and not report it on your application

Don't know if it would've but it definitely should've.

I mean, lets be real: lots of people, including pre-meds, drink underage, and it would be silly to disqualify someone for just being unlucky enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time to get caught with an MIP when in reality I daresay the majority of the entering class did something similar probably several times. This is coming from someone who also made the personal choice not to drink before 21, BTW. Now a DUI is a different matter and shows you to be truly reckless and negligent and it should make it hard to get into med school (like it does).

Um, it might vary by state, but I know for a fact that in my state they absolutely can give you an MIP just for being at a party with alcohol. I mean, if they're going to bust a party, why WOULDN'T they fine as many people as they can get their hands on? Last I checked, the cops aren't really in the business of being lenient just cuz.

But again, MIP=no big deal. DUI=huge, huge, probably disqualifying for several years deal.

They kick you out of my university if you have alcohol on campus. Fortunately, the party I was involved in was across the street from campus. However, Michigan State law states that you can get an MIP for being a certain distance within the vicinity of alcohol so yes, everyone at my party got MIP's too except for me, my buddy, and this girl. A few of the guys were kicked off of their athletic teams due to the MIP's. Of course if you are irreplacable on your team, you will just have lots of running to do and not get kicked out. That being said, it was a bad judgement call of mine to even be at the party. I know you can get an MIP cleared after a certain amount of years, but that would've been bad. I can't believe someone was drunk enough to allow the cops in, (as I found out later they did not have a warrant but some drunken idiot allowed them into the house thinking they were guests for the party), either way I am very lucky to be in the situation that I am in right now. Hopefully none of us have to deal with MIP's and DUI's.

P.S. to the guy who blew the 0.04... that sucks. One of my friends told me that he was at a party that got busted once, and they only gave MIP's to the people that blew >.06. That's really unfortunate for you, but at least it's not as big of a deal as a DUI.
