Thanx you too... People didn't want to go to USN last year?

someone said that 50 people on the WL will definitely get in. I hope I'm at least on that list. My friend had over 3.7 with a degree but was not accepted 2 years ago but was accepted last year. I think its different year to year but I don't know how this year will be. My GPA is lower than that.

On the website it said not to call about your status so stop annoying Dr. Deyoung if you are LOL.

But if your nagging pays off and you're accepted let me know through PM LOL.

So if we call, I wonder if he will give us our status or tell us to call back at the end of the month? I'm afraid to get the call of acceptance, I dont know what I'll do, probably vomit and pass out or something. Then when I wake up, I'll call him back.

ewww. did you have to say vomit. i just had my lunch!
I can understand you passing out. I would too.

I'm too scared to call him....

Last time I called him finding out if he was going to call people on a specific day, he asked me "You want to know your status don't you?"

Hard to really ignore that lol...but it was expected, but he was still nice about it :p
So did he tell you your status?

I finally have a chance to speak with Dr. Deyoung today about my status. He told me to hang in there and be patience. He'll be able to give me a clearer picture after April 26. I did asked him about how many seats are still left in Henderson and he said that he wouldn't be able to know after April 26. The bottom line is: Be patient and call him back after April 26.

My friend had over 3.7 with a degree but was not accepted 2 years ago but was accepted last year.

Oh my god, that sounds exactly like me!!! 3.7 gpa, bachelors degree, and an almost perfect pcat score and I'm still wating. Obviously I didn't too too stellar in the interview or I would have been accepted by now. Oh well, it was my first interview ever, live and learn. I'm wondering if I should call and annoy him as well because the school I am at is wanting me to be a lab instructor next year and is awaiting a reply.

I don't think it will backfire. If anything, he will consider us more since he knows we really want to go to this school, as opposed to someone who hasn't called or emailed. My email was to not only ask for my status, but to say how much I like the school and also to thank him for the opportunity and interview. :D

"please do not call to ask me about your status!"
of course it didn't sound that mean but it's somewhere along the lines of "be patient!"

I am not attending right now, but I interviewed at the Utah campus and I live in Utah. I also have friends who are attending the Utah campus. I really liked the campus here in Utah during my interview and the friends I have really love it there. It is a great location too as you have everything you would want nearby.

Yes everyone should go to the Utah campus (so more seats at henderson open up for me). I prefer henderson and most people do. There is a waitlist for Henderson and usually seats available for Utah. So Henderson always fills up before Utah... Its the same program, my guess is location. Also lots of California people prefer Henderson because it is closer and no winter snow. I prefer it for those reasons (i'm from AZ).

Hi Dear,
I got accepted few weeks ago and already deposit at Henderson ( tho' i interviewed at Utah)
I interviewed in early Feb; i did a very good job.Even i thought i would got an ealry call but not, and I knew that there were guys more stellar than me at my time of interview.
I wrote email to him in few weeks later, and got the same generic answer ( as certain folks mentioned on here). Finally, Dr.DeYoung called me on the day he said in his email.
So i think if you have good stats enough ( of course if u had really good one u would get the early call), and esp did a good job in interviewed, you have a big chance to get in.

I hope you guys here have good lucks

I know this was mentioned numerous times here on the forum, but how does the point system for the selection process works at USN? I'm confused.

-From past threads from years before, some have mentioned 40pts are reserved for the interview, while 60pts is reserved for the "interview selection score" (GPA's, PCAT, etc.). So 60% is based on interview selection and 40% is based on interview.

Interview Selection Score is based on
1. Overall GPA
2. Pre-requisite GPA
3. Any degree you possess (I heard it may be 1 pt. for Bachelor's, 2 pts. for Master's)
4. Number of pre-requisites completed at the time of application.
5. PCAT score

BUT WAIT:

-Others say that the interview is worth 40 points OUT of 60 points. (which means the interview counts for 2/3 of the total score, which is ~66.7%). 20 points are only made up of the "interview selection score."

Which is correct????

And has anyone received any calls for acceptance lately???

Hello Everyone!
Congrats to those who have been accepted, and good luck to those waiting!!

I am currently a P2, and decided to check in on this website since I used it when applying :)

Ill check back if anyone has any questions about the school, especially if youre trying to decide between schools to attend..

Be patient, calling Dr DeYoung before he has called you is not going to help your chances, it will probably just annoy him.

Also I have to ask, why would you ever go to a non-accredited pharmacy school?? Or to a school that is not a pharm. D program?? Jobs are hard enough to get as is!!

Good Luck!!

I am at the Nevada campus.

Honestly, there are great teachers at the Utah campus, i think thats the plus. On the flip, theres more people, more students, and more to do in NV. If youre torn, id say go to whichever you get accepted to.

I interviewed March 2nd, then I got a phone call from Dr. Deyoung on March 22nd. Then I got my packets a little after that and had until April 15th to make a decision.

I declined the seat to go to UCSF

I really hope that as people decline their seats they move down the list and go to the next candidate, not wait until the end and see if their class is full or not and admit down the list that way you know?

Hey Rae, do you mind to elaborate more on this? How many is many, and what are their names? Just let us know so we can avoid them?

I always thought that once the school has precandidacy it means it's accredited by acpe (although not fully accredited). Candidate school graduates has the same rights and privilege of a fully accredited school. It seems like they have accreditation but not full accreditation which shouldn't matter since the graduates get to sit for the naplex. I can't seem to find a school that has candidacy but failed to achieve full accreditation on google?

I am one of those that is willing to attend a non-accredited, pharm school, or would go to a non-pharmacy program (ex: pharmaceutical sciences) under the condition that this school also has a pharmD program. I am not sure.... but to me, if I got rejected by a pharmacy school, this seems like a really good way to make yourself more competitive for next try.

I am a bit confused. From what you wrote it sounds like USN is not accredited...... but it is, correct? I heard that USN just recently renew its accreditation for another 5,6 years.

I am entering my P1 year at Henderson this fall. Can I ask you some questions about the materials? so when will we get the laptop? and the materials in the laptop, is that like an online book or just the powerpoint summaries of the class?

summer remediation...... 5 chances, correct? but does this include the times when you failed the friday test, but pass on the monday retaking? or this is the time when you failed twice, going to summer school? sorry.... just a bunch of confusions I forgot to ask....

Don't worry. They are accredited for 6 years. You get 6 chances. If you get 3 then your on academic probation, 6 will get you kicked out of the program.

I heard for some schools, there are quite a few students in the pharmacy class coming from the waitlist because in the end, students decided to go to other schools. April 14th is only couple more days so I think there will be more spaces open up, especially with USN being so expensive. Good luck

You'll get the laptop during orientation. Your class materials will be posted on a server. For most profs, the powerpoint slides are all you need. Sometimes they have word docs instead and other times they have word docs that are supplementary to the powerpoints. It just goes into more detail. You'll have access to online textbooks but for the most part, you don't need them unless you want to do outside reading.

For summer remediation, you can get up to five of them. To fail and get a summer that means that you didn't pass Friday and then failed Monday too. When you do that you get a week of summer remediation. You can do that five separate times throughout the year. If you fail your block in summer remediation, then the consequences are more severe. You have to sit around a whole year until your block comes up and then you retake it with the class behind you. You only have to pay a prorated fee for the time spent in school but you will not graduate with your old class. I think you have to start paying back your loans too because you won't be at least a half time student anymore. This you want to avoid.

That doesn't seem so bad at all. Fortunately, this weeds out some of the people who aren't confident enough and feel they can't handle the program. I'm NOT saying that if USN isn't your first choice then you're not confident, so don't trip. But for some people, that is the case.

Good news for everyone: Some girl at my school who got accepted to USN, is mostly likely going to decline her seat. She's afraid of the 90% passing rule, and got accepted to a "C's gets degrees" school. Oh well, more room for you guys right? Frankly, I would rather have classmates who actually want to be at the school. I hope this seat will free up a space for someone who will contribute a lot to the team. Good luck everyone!!! Hang in there!!!

I wonder how much weight of the 20pts (maximum "interview selection score") account for the PCAT... since Interview Selection Score is only 1/3 of the total score. I was kinda disappointed with my score, but somehow I still managed to earn an interview. I think completing all my pre-req's and having a Bachelor's helped me earn it. The interview is worth a lot more... and I knew I did pretty well on it. Still crossing my fingers... :xf:

Butler is a great school. Congrats! I’m in waiting for one of the two Midwesterns...preferably Phoenix. There is no doubt in my mind that USN will go deep into their waitlist. This school is one of the few that does allow for deferred enrollment even up to a month before classes start. So there is a chance even late in the summer to be pulled from the list. Hopefully it all works out and you don’t have to wait that long. J

Yes, you can fail every single Friday exam but pass Monday and be in academic good standing. You'll have that six weeks set aside for summer remediation to lounge by the pool all day if that is what you want to do.

Whats up all...

I've been lurking and reading this thread since I interviewed in January...

but I got a call this afternoon from Dr. DeYoung this afternoon...:D

Local kid makes good... IDK how many Vegas/Henderson kids got in this year but I think I'm one of the fortunate few... (I only saw one other UNLV student at my interview date)

I appreciate the positivity and optimism everyone on this thread seems to display... everything happens for a reason and we'll all get to our goal eventually....

best of luck to everyone still waiting to hear...

I chose NV, because I don't know anything about the area that the other campus is located in, but I may request to change it tomorrow.

Congrats! Knowing that you had the interview on January and got accepted three months later is really encouraging. :)

Though I'm still anxious if I'm ever gonna get that call from Dr. DeYoung any day now since interviewing in February. I hope there are still seats left, esp in Henderson. But I really don't care where I get in.

Hello everyone,

First, I would like to congratulate those who have already accepted to USN and to those who are awaiting for the result.

I believe those, who are accepted, probably are looking for a place close to school. There is a new house for rent in Henderson; it is 2 stories; 4 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms; all bedroom and 2 bathroom are on the second floor. The house is less than 5.5 miles from school; it approximately 7-12 minutes drive.

If anyone interested, contact me @ huonguyen1@yahoo.com

Ooh Texas. If my memory is correct, there is one person in my class who wanted to go home and do her summer IPPE in Texas. Normally that isn't a problem for most people but certain states won't allow you to be an intern until you complete the P1 year. And you don't complete the year until you complete your summer IPPE. So the moral of this story is don't make plans to be home all summer next year.

I think they invite you to join a housing database later in the summer so that should have lots of housing info. Or you could try the Arabella Apartments because they are so close and the apartment manager will be happy if I send people her way.

I just heard some people talking about it yesterday. One person was saying they didn't study in the MBA classes and another was saying that there was a lot of reading. Anyway I don't know if it is worth it or not. It seems like a lot of money on top of already expensive tuition to me.

As for the number of seats left: Dr. DeYoung said that he "doesn't know" right now and CANNOT give me a specific answer... mainly because there are people admitted earlier than me who still have yet to decide if they want to attend USN and also have yet to submit their tuition deposit. He would have a better estimate in the last week of April (week of April 26) or sometime after that.

Congratulations Shaman!. I'm from Texas too. I was wondering y u chose USN over Texas Tech?

Thanks! Glad to hear there will be at least one other Texan, although I look forward to hearing and learning about living in lots of other states as well. I really liked Tech, all of the students seemed really happy and the staff seemed amazing. The interview process was ... very unique and actually enjoyable, even though it was 8 hours long. I chose USN for several reasons, one being that my favorite pharmacist and mentor is a graduate from there. The three year program was definately also a reason, because I would've felt like I was wasting 3 months a year every summer at Tech. I rather learn year-round and get my degree a year sooner. The final reason is that I have always been a big city guy, and Amarillo was too small. I spent my first two years of undergrad in a really small Texas town, and hated it. I love living in a big city.

Was the 90% passing score a factor for your decision at all?

Would someone who's currently attending USN please let me know how many hours you study per day and on the weekend? I understand we all study at a a different pace but any information you can share regarding the subject would be really helpful. I've been losing sleep over the 90% passing requirement eventhough I'm not going there yet. Also, exactly how hard are the tests questions since I'm thinking in order to score a 90 or more wouldn't you have to know the material inside out? (not to mention overanalyzing a question and/or making silly mistakes:( ) The majority of schools only require a 70% passing score so do you think the extra pressure at USN is worth getting out a year ealier? And if you could do it again would you still pick USN over other less stressful schools?

The 90% passing score was on my "PRO" list for USN. The fact that all USN graduates are straight A students was a really big draw. In my opinion, it is one of the reasons that their NAPLEX passing rate is so high. I'm not worried about it at all, and here's why; If you don't pass the exam on Friday, immediately after taking it, they go over the entire test and why each answer is correct. Then, you have the entire weekend to study your brains out (for the second time), and when you go in Monday morning, the professors review the material again and open the floor to questions (which allows you to clear up anything you're not clear on). The time for questions lasts however long it needs to. Then, you retake the test. I know so much about the system because i've been working directly under a USN graduate for about 3 years. This is a system that is designed for you to succeed.

I actually like the 90% passing rule too. At the interview I told the panel that I was actually intimidated at first, but I try to focus on the positive aspects of it. Think about it...once you complete the program and you're out there apply for jobs, you can proudly tell your future employer that by hiring you, they can have the peace of mind knowing that they are not hiring an average student. That is because you had to ace every class to pass the program. Talk about having a strategic advantage over the competition! Damn, I should go back to doing PR work! LOL!

The test is completely different, but it's the same material. In order to pull straight A's all the way through pharmacy school, like all USN students do, you do have to know the material in and out. The way the system is set up, any diligent student can learn the material inside and out.

The hours I put in varies depending on the material. The first part of the year was biochemistry and I didn't find it that tough. I think I was putting in 2 to 3 hours a night and next to none on weekends. When we started learning about the drugs, I had to put in more than that because there was a lot of memorization. So I put in 4 to 5 a night and I studied a few hours on the weekend. Now we are doing math type work and I'm totally slacking. I'm taking stretches where I don't study at all for days at a time.
You mostly need to know the material inside out but there are lots of slides that the prof doesn't spend much time on so I'm getting pretty good at learning what to spend more time committing to memory and what to hope for the best on if I happen to see it on an exam.

I don't really stress in school. My outside life has become a bit stressful so school is my one little oasis where I have complete control over how successful I am. I do know that some of my classmates study much more than I do and stress out a lot more. For me, it is worth it and 90% is no big deal. But I imagine if you fail a bunch of Friday exams and have to put in tons of hours that the stress could be a bit much. If you are losing sleep already and you haven't even started yet, I'd consider spending the time before school starts to find relaxation techniques that work for you.

Good info. Thanks. All the students I talked to at the school (and the other schools I interviewed at) made it sound like they do nothing but study. I honestly didn't think it was possible for them to study as much as they were telling me they did. I am planning on an average of 4-5 hours a day, but they were saying that they study like 10 hours every day and some on the weekends.

Thanks for this. This is very helpful. The hours are making me a bit nervous about applying for the next cycle (but if I don't apply I never will know - for all I know the decision will be made for me and I won't get an interview). I'm verrrrry nontraditional (4 kids and husband who *might* travel a lot for work - waiting to find that out when we get to Nellis) and have 4 yrs to get through and finish something. That's 1 to finish prereqs and apply, and 3 to get through the program with no room/time for setbacks. Are you basically in class from 8-3 with a short break or two for lunch, etc...? I have always seemed to need to study a little bit less than people I have befriended in classes so I am hoping I am more like you than the people who say they have to study 6 hours a night. I don't think I would be able to start studying in earnest until after 830 most nights. Getting up at 5 every day doesn't leave a whole lot of room to stay up til 1 or 2 am on a regular basis.

Its nervewracking to know that you are out so much money if you just cannot get through.

I had a dream the other night I was accepted, I started class, and was saying to myself "gee, I really got myself worked up and scared about this for nothing. This is manageable". I had been starting to wonder if I should even apply. I have just under a 3.6 science GPA (but still need to do the OChem sequence) so I guess its worth a shot.

We are scheduled from 8 to 3 with an hour lunch break and periodic breaks throughout the day. The reality is a bit different though. Lots of days we get out early and some days even before lunch. On the Thursdays before exams, they try to let us get out early because most students skip that day anyway to go study and if they go past lunch, there will maybe be 30 people left.

Depending on how quickly you pick up the material, you might be able to handle not studying until 8:30 if you don't mind staying up late every once in awhile. Our exams typically test for six lectures but only two of them come in the same week as our exam. If you study extra for the other four lectures during your weekends and keep regular study habits, picking up the material for the other two without staying up half the night might not be that hard. I think the trick in your case would be not falling behind.

I would encourage you to at least try. A fair number of parents attend here and some have very young children who need lots of care. If they can do it, why not you?

why the ambiguity in his responses to certain students??
It must mean one thing:

If you get a response of April 27th you may be in the accepted group
If you get a response of May 15th you may be in the rejected. or the other way around.

Yeah all he told me was "feel free to contact me if you haven't heard anything towards the end of April". So to me, Monday is "towards the end of April". I will probably email him and if he doesn't reply, I will call on Tuesday. I am getting to the point that I don't care either way. thanks for your feedback. I hate asking those kinds of questions because to me it always sounds more like "how much can I slack - will I be able to party on the weekends" versus what I am really thinking which is "will my kids end up wearing dirty clothes to school and have bad hygiene b/c I forgot to do the laundry and then I end up failing anyway b/c its just too much?"

I will never know if I do not apply. So...I guess its PCAT here I come this fall, along with the app to USN.

I know, but hey... this is pharmacy school! It's going to be FULL of challenges, but challenges that will help me for the better. To be honest, I was a little hesitant about applying to USN, but I've come to realize this is my dream. I really want to do my very BEST in helping others... not to "slack-off"... but rather to enjoy the ride. And I'm willing to experience that at USN. :)

ya i didnt want to call too early especially since our interview was so recent and that would seem annoying to call him right after, but i think today and this week should be fine its been almost a month

someone was confused about the April 27th and May 15th dates... The way I understood it at the interview (3-30-10) he said if you re accepted he personally calls by the 27th (I thought he said 2-3 weeks) and then on May 15th the letters get sent out to everyone whether you're accepted, wait-listed, or denied. I sure hope I don't have to wait for the letter. :-)

Seriously? Damn....If we don't get calls by tomorrow, we're pretty much waitlisted or rejected :(. I have a felling that the seats in NV are already taken :(.

Ok well I emailed Dr. Deyoung today and I got the following reply:

"Thank you for your continued interest in the program. I was out of the office last week so I am spending today reviewing the status of the admission cycle. I hope to have a clearer picture of your admission status after this Thursday."

So I guess we will all have to wait a few more days...

Jew Unit, are you getting a Bachelor's at the end of this semester (or quarter)?? Not sure if you can send in your updated transcripts after the term is over, so that would add more points to your total admission score.

Just got an email from Dr. DeYound. I am waitlisted in the 100+ so I think I am leaving the West for pharmacy school. I'm just glad I've been accepted at 2 other schools.

Hang in there guys. You still have a chance if you're wait listed. I heard a lot of people on the wait list got in last year. Just make sure you do well in the current quarter/semester so you can get bumped up.

I also got wait-list. Good luck for those who continue pharmacy career at other schools and also good luck to those who on the waiting list. For those who didn't make it this year, make sure to re-apply next year and it will be a lot easier.

I'm waitlisted 51+. He said that about 20% of the people in the 51+ group generally get accepted. Eventually I need to make plans to move to Indianapolis to attend Butler, so I can't wait around all summer.

If your email says top 51+ that means that there are at least 50 people ahead of you. But in reality you could be anywhere from #51 to #100. That is where I am at too.

Damn...Top 50 for me. I guess I'm going to be reapplying next year :(. I still got to deal with A&P II. I will be completing Calc. and (hopefully) O. Chem II. I only applied to the school in Nevada, does that mean top 50 for the school in Nevada or top 50 for both campuses?

I think that if you are in the top 50 then you have a really good shot. I think top 50 means top 50 overall for both campuses.

Yeah, they were finished in time to apply last year. I just did not do it. top 50 though. It's good to know I wasn't flatout denied, but it sucks to be waitlisted now.

Top 50 isn't bad. I'm pretty sure they got through that whole list last year and went into the 51+ list. Now it is a big game of musical chairs. People will get accepted to their top choices and open up a spot at other schools. Unfortunately, it is going to require more patience.

Patience I can do, not getting in would be horrible.

Hang in there guys. I got accepted to USN Nevada Campus but most likely to decline my offer since I got accepted somewhere else. So there will be one more seat for those who are waiting.
