View Full Version : USN class of 2013
theraflu 06-21-2010, 09:47 PM can someone clarify how hard the 3 year program is? i need to know before i settle becuse I don't know if i will be able to handle a 90% passing score and also do an accelerated thing. I have mostly B's at a UC. Do they just say its 90% passing but the exam is really easy or is it really hard? becuase I've heard many people say different things. some are like omg ists so hard you have to get so and so right out of only a few questions if you get one wrong you're screwed etc. other people say its passable. if you went to a UC and got a 3.0ish please let me know how you're doing at USN.
hi xanaxation
it is MUCH easier than in UC system, at least to me, if you get GPA around 3.0 ish, you definitely can survive and pass with 90% score, because all of the questions are multiple choices, and the material is directly from the lecture notes, raw memorization, there is no critical thinking requirement like UC's exam,
JUST relax, don't stress out, don't listen to anyone else, because they simply exaggerated things,
pharmacy4444 06-22-2010, 10:51 AM Dont listen. USN is super hard and everyone should drop out! Listen to Mr. Blah. I need at least 76 to 100 people to drop ;). lol
JEW UNIT 06-22-2010, 05:14 PM USN students,
I am a student at USN as well and
I am renting my whole basement. My house is 3 mins away from South Jordan campus. call AR ASAP at 801-688-0937.
Hey. Just incase I get accepted in the Utah location, how much is rent?
Trankuil 06-24-2010, 09:31 AM So for those that have been accepted...How is the paper work going? All I really have left is getting my updated shots, everything else I think i have taken care of. What is everyone doing financially? Unfortunately im going to take out max loans this year (around 65 grand from what the financial pdf showed) because my wife just had a baby and will be in school in the fall, so she cant work. Im gonna try to work 10-20 hours a week as an intern once we get our lisences, I have a few connections here in SLC to get on with. I figured I would take out the max this first year and see how it goes from there, hopefully I will have plenty left by P2 that I only need to take out the loan for tuition costs. To be honest I get more worried over repaying the loans after school than any of the classwork. Hows everyone else doing?

It's coming along, I'm just waiting on my shots too unfortunately my mother didn't keep up with immunization cards so I had to get titers done. I'm pretty sure I will be taking out max loans this year too :(
Circle Slash 06-25-2010, 01:40 AM I figured I should tell you guys...one of my friends has decided to decline USN. Good news for the next person on the waiting list.
Chakavack 06-25-2010, 12:13 PM :) Good news! I hope that your friend got into his or her first choice! And the wait goes ooooooooonnnnnn....

JEW UNIT 06-25-2010, 09:00 PM Did anybody get a status update?
Summitguy98 06-26-2010, 10:55 PM Hey everyone,
I just wanted to say thanks for all of the great info and feedback I have received on this thread. I have lost hope for getting in this year. A sincere good luck to all those who made it this year.

Don't give up!! There's still 2 months before the semester starts...Anything could happen.
Chakavack 06-27-2010, 07:00 PM I don't know if this question have been answered or not, but is the wait list number, the status for both campusus or the one that we had interview for?!!
Trankuil 06-29-2010, 10:21 AM I think its an overall number for seats total. I would assume if you are on the waiting list you wouldnt be picky about which campus you got accepted into. I could be wrong though.

Some people are picky...There was an option that states if a the person to get in Nevada, Utah, or both.
Trankuil 06-29-2010, 12:05 PM Yeah I remember the option box, but I would think this late in the process the wait list is just lumped together...but then again there are those picky people. I know if it was me still waiting I would take anything.

Same.
Chakavack 06-29-2010, 12:57 PM Thanks guys! Yes, I picked both campuses as options of the wait list. I will go to Utah or Nevada, I won't mind. Thanks again!
Trankuil 06-30-2010, 01:51 PM So any SoJo USNers here? Doing my BLS training the 23rd of August, wondering if anyone else is that day too.

I haven't heard anything from Fin Aid yet. I thought we were supposed to get our packages by the end of June. I am about to start selling my friends Kidney's (they only need one!).
The rest of my paperwork is done. The only thing left is the immunizations and background check. I just found out that Hep A has something in it that I am allergic to, but I managed to get the Hep B. I have been sitting here with cotton mouth ever since. :p
Anybody find a decent place to live yet? I have been looking at reviews online, but some of them are creepy to say the least...

Are you attending Henderson or SoJo? I had a PM from someone attending Henderson that just barely got the financial aid bracketing, so you should be getting it. What packet are you talking about? I havent recieved anything via snail mail, its all been email.

I am attending Henderson. I have gotten the insurance paperwork through snail mail, but the rest by email. I haven't heard from Fin Aid yet. I talked to the secretary a few weeks ago and she said we should hear something by the end of June. I am just wondering if I need to put some of my friends kidneys on Ebay or not to pay for this year....
Chakavack 07-04-2010, 06:59 PM Hi Guys!! Happy 4th to Everyone! Hopefully next year we will be watching fireworks in Vegas!! :)
byork 07-04-2010, 07:52 PM What kind of financial aid can you get at USN?

I wouldn't panic yet. I turned in my financial aid paperwork late and talked to someone in financial aid and she said that they are processing the MBA program students first and then they will do the regular non-MBA program folks. I haven't received my award letter yet but neither has one of my friends who turned everything in on time. I wouldn't freak out unless you find that everyone else got an award letter and you haven't received one. Then I'd call financial aid and see what's up with that.
Trankuil 07-07-2010, 01:37 PM I havent received anything from snail mail except for info about the MBA program, which im holding off of for now. I just got the email about the drug screen and background checks, why the hell doesnt our tuition pay for this crap. Hopefully stuff comes soon. How is the housing hunt coming for everyone?
Chakavack 07-07-2010, 10:31 PM Any updates from the waitlisted people?!!

I was thinking the same thing....
Trankuil 07-10-2010, 09:07 AM 180 bones for a new vericella series hurts too....i should have just done the titer test :(
Sugadarlin 07-11-2010, 12:47 PM 180 bones for a new vericella series hurts too....i should have just done the titer test :(
Ouch, this stuff is really adding up for me too, but this is the easy part :)
WolfAmongSheep 07-11-2010, 04:16 PM 180 bones for a new vericella series hurts too....i should have just done the titer test :(
I went to my current U's health department and they did the titer for $40. I have gotten the Hep's for $10 each, a polio booster for $28, then the MMR and Tdap for $10 each. Check with your local U and your state health department. As bad as those totals sound, my Dr wanted to charge $680 for everything....guess she has student loans she is trying to pay off too...
JEW UNIT 07-12-2010, 01:22 PM bump any updates?
Chakavack 07-12-2010, 02:23 PM NOTHING for me!! But I don't expect anything happen until mid-late august. Apparently everybody who got accepted paid their deposits. So we have to see if they get into their top choices, so they will decline their acceptance at USN. Or people from top wait list get into their first choice schools! I don't know the deadline for tuition payment though! Maybe by that time we get an answer!! Good luck Jew unit! Hang in there! :)
Hitagi 07-12-2010, 05:49 PM diastole, I just wanted to thank you (again) for all the information/opinions you provided about the P1 curriculum. The work does seem doable. I've completely enjoyed the summer for 2 months and I'm going to start studying next week. :)
Also, I was wondering, did you or are you working as an intern while in school? If you are and if anyone else knows about this, I'm curious about paid intern jobs. For example, if a student has no pharmacy experience (no pharmacy technician license), it's still possible to find paid entry-level intern positions after the student has gotten his/her license right?
So any SoJo USNers here? Doing my BLS training the 23rd of August, wondering if anyone else is that day too.
Me! But I'm doing mine tomorrow. :D
Ouch, this stuff is really adding up for me too, but this is the easy part :)
Doesn't your insurance pay for shots? Mine paid for everything except the co-pay.
Oh, and I'm surprised we have to pay for the drug screening and background check.

I wasn't working as an intern the past year. I assume it is possible to find a position with no experience but it might be tough with the economy being down.
Sugadarlin 07-13-2010, 10:54 AM Doesn't your insurance pay for shots? Mine paid for everything except the co-pay.
Oh, and I'm surprised we have to pay for the drug screening and background check.
My insurance charged me $75 for the TST, TDAP and titers I needed because supposedly that stuff counts as a school physical which isn't covered. Then when my titers came back and I found out I needed the Hep A and B vaccines, my doctors office didn't do those so I had to go to the health department for those and pay separate. So I'm not as bad off as most. But all in all these costs are adding up fast.
Trankuil 07-15-2010, 11:12 AM Im poor and not on insurance until school starts lol! I wish i had my loans for all of this crap, its making me put stuff on my credit card :(
Trankuil 07-16-2010, 10:23 AM Also found out not to really expect anything snail mail. And for the So Jo'ers we probably wont get our checks until the first week in september, because they are reimburst to the henderson campus first and then have to travel to utah, le gay.
morninglory 07-16-2010, 01:45 PM Hey has anyone heard anything about financial aid yet? I know someone said that they do the mba students first but I don't want to be surprised in august and find out there was a problem with my financial aid you know?! diastole would they have told you by now if you are actually going to receive funding?
Trankuil 07-16-2010, 02:02 PM I just got my financial aid award letter in my email yesterday from francis (Utah campus) so it must be in the process. If you are worried I would just call the financial aid person at whichever campus you are at.

Hi Sugadarlin,
Same boat here. I haven't heard any from the USN FA office .I would called them but have been busy at work; i try to drop by this forum today( i haven't did for a while. Sometimes. I checked Class 2013 facebook group but see only MBA students got the fund)
Anyway, I should wait ...snail process...and i will come over Henderson this weekend to check rooms to rent.
Thanks for your update

I haven't heard anything either. Last year, I got worried, sent an email to Financial Aid and then got my award letter the next day. Maybe they bump you to the top of the list if you are freaking out?
mandydp6 07-20-2010, 08:00 AM Hi Everyone,
USN is a school I am considering applying to when their application cycle opens up, but I wanted to ask the people in this thread who have already been accepted some things:
First, for the PharmD/MBA program, on their website it says it would take "about as long as the PharmD program takes, 3 years"...does this mean 3 total for both programs, or 3 + 3 for a total of 6?
Second, during your interview or any campus visits, where you able to communicate with any present students there? I've been reading negative posts here on SDN from disgruntled students, and I'm curious if any students on campus were able to give you any feedback?
Shimmery 07-20-2010, 10:44 AM The MBA program and the Pharm. D program combined is 3 years, you spend one year taking the pharm. D program and then during the first 6 weeks of summer (I think) you take your MBA classes.
As for students, only P1 students are available when I went there, that's it.

You get the MBA in 3 years at the same time you are getting the PharmD. They take classes during our summer breaks.
Last year for interviews, there were P1s doing the interviews or giving the tours. The P2s were off campus working their day in the pharmacy so you wouldn't have a chance to talk to them. I assume it will be set up the same way this year but I'm just guessing there.

When I interviewed in Utah there was a p1 student in the interview group, but a p3 gave us a tour around the building and let us ask questions and stuff, so there were a few students around when I interviewed.

So I guess my main question was, if you guys were able to speak with current students, did they have positive things to say? And did you get the sense they they were happy with their school choice?

Yeah, of course they will give you positives, but the girl that gave us the tour was also down to earth and honest, which was nice. And yeah she seemed happy, she was ready to graduate in 2 months :P.

If you get accepted after 8/2, then it's due right away :(. By that time financial aid won't help out...:(...That means we have to find over $20g +pissed++pissed+:boom::boom::boom:

Play some Texas Hold'Em at the Bellagio room. With a $1g investment, you can easily turn it into $20g's. That tip was free. If you want more, message me but it ain't gonna be free.
Trankuil 07-23-2010, 10:30 AM Still think the school should be paying for the drug screening/background check....
nhn53002 07-23-2010, 12:29 PM So the tuition is broken into two payments per year huh? Seriously, how do you plan on finding that money should you get accepted after 8/2? Please share.
"● on or before July 9, 2010, I have 15 business days (M-F) from the offer of admission to accept the offer and submit a
$1,000 deposit, or
●between July 10 and July 30, 2010, I have until August 2, 2010 to accept the offer and submit a $1,000 deposit, or

1) I may be given no more than 2 hours to accept the offer;
2) I will return the admission and enrollment forms to the Registrar’s Office on or before August 25, 2010, and

Chakavack 07-24-2010, 12:15 PM Thanks for the breakdown nhn53002! so for now I will just save $1000 for the deposit and worry about the rest on Aug 24th in case i get an acceptance offer! I love pharmacy and all but $120K before living expenses is a little too much...Next semester I'll be eligible for an instate pharmacy and dental school which are much cheaper. Plus finding $40K for the first year of school isn't going to be easy.

True. But accepting USN's offer will give you a 2 year head-start (I assume your instate is a traditional 4 year program). With that 2 years, you can make quite enough. My opinion.
Trankuil 07-28-2010, 10:13 AM Less than a month away before our white coat ceremony and class starts :D
diastole 07-28-2010, 10:32 AM Gah, I'm still completing my immunizations from last year. I have one more shot and I don't want to pay for it. At least you don't have to buy the white coats. I heard some schools make you do that.

Wait, they let you do your rotations without having all your immunizations? I thought they all needed to be up to date before hand? I have the second series vericella shot left to get. I wish i would have gotten the titer because i didnt have record of the shot, the shots are 90 a piece...ugh. I still have to do my BG check and drug screen within the next couple weeks too.

Great point! My original plan was to apply for Fall of 2011 at a 4-year school in Cali. But when I found out that USN was a 3-year school AND they didn't require the entire year of general bio, I was able to rearrange my class schedule to complete my prereqs and apply a year earlier. Knocked 2 years off my original plan.

When is the White Coat Ceremony?
diastole 07-28-2010, 04:58 PM Wait, they let you do your rotations without having all your immunizations? I thought they all needed to be up to date before hand? You don't need to do them for retail rotations and the hospital ones will let you work there if you started the shots that come in a series. At least, I think that must be the case because I got to do an IPPE in a hospital and I still haven't finished everything. I was supposed to complete everything by May 15th but I don't think the school cares as long as I'm done by the time school starts.
saki1210 07-28-2010, 11:34 PM Just a heads up, if anyone lives in socal, you can get your immunizations for free at a health clinic in Compton (kinda scary but actually very nice). I got everything for free except the varicella which I already had chickenpox, so I paid $25 for blood titers.
Trankuil 07-29-2010, 10:46 AM When is the White Coat Ceremony?
Im pretty sure that its during orientation week, which is the 25-27. Not sure which day it is, but i would assume the 27th. Im guessing we will get more information sent to us the closer it gets to school starting. Does that sound right Diastole?

how long does it take to get the results back from the titers? im thinking of doing this and not paying the 90 bucks for the second vericella shot.

That sounds right. Last year, I believe we had it on a Friday in the afternoon and this year I have to go to school on the 26th but have the 27th off. I assume that is because the faculty is going to be at the White Coat Ceremony.
Make sure you know how to iron. Those coats come in bags so they have big wrinkles in them when you take them out. It just doesn't look right when you have some big wig from the community put on your coat and it is all wrinkled.

I just hope I gave them the right size at orientation, lol.

Hello folkx
Any one of class 2013 ( i mean pharmacy program) have got the FA award letter? Aug is coming...
Thanks
JEW UNIT 08-02-2010, 09:06 PM Did anybody get a status update yet???
Dr faiths 08-03-2010, 12:02 AM Hey
anyone got acceptance call? Please let me know... I m so worried ....
daabc 08-03-2010, 01:46 AM I just learned about this site and was planning on applying to USN next fall using academic forgiveness, but the degree of difficulty being expressed by current students seem to be abnormally high due to the school staff. (I read all 26 pages from beginning to end).
Some "unfair" difficulties posted:
-the lecture and the test did not match
-unfair teachers
-subjects that are presented 5 minutes before a test
As for my background, I have a BS in biochemistry and has been working as a pharmacy tech for 5 years.
Anyways, I believe one of the current students posted a sample of the daily curriculum and it did not seem that difficult to me. She also posted things that a first year should learn during the summer to prepare for school and these were things that I already know and was very basic to me.......
So can someone with a degree in Biochemistry and going to USN answer a question for me.
How hard is the curriculum compared to Biochem? The hardest class for my major was Biochem + a very special teacher. Let just say that there was a 90 percent FAIL rate in her class (I was one of them) and they didn't let her teach the subject again when everyone complained. To pass her class you literally had to memorize the book from beginning to end, since she will ask ANYTHING that could be in it. This includes those little side boxes that tells little stories about how the subject matter relates to real life that no one reads. Yes, EVERYONE in the class failed that question. While taking the class a second time I got an A since the amount of data I have to memorize was a lot more reasonable.
So how hard is USN if I am coming from a biochemistry background?

I wanted to address this unfair part. The first two points are matters of opinion but I can't see how the last point can possibly be true. There isn't lecture on the same day as exams so there is no way to introduce something 5 minutes before a test. In fact, the lecture the day before an exam is usually not on the next day's exam either. Now if you fail the exam, there is a review before the retake but there isn't new material introduced. If it seems new to you, you did a poor job studying and blaming the prof is a way of avoiding responsibility.
A biochem major should be able to breeze through the first month or so because everything will be review. After that, it is more like physiology plus drugs. Since you have worked as a tech, the drugs will be much easier to learn. If you did well in A&P and have decent study habits, I doubt the school will be that hard for you.
Chakavack 08-03-2010, 06:38 PM Nothing for me!!:((

Yes, currently working to get my ADHD under control. Testing how effective the treatment is by taking pre-reqs and developing new study techniques to build habits.
The common drugs and fast movers are easy to learn while working though. I am actually not quite sure about some of the comments about math and calculations. I find most of the calculations to be easy, including the IV stuff I did at tech school. I just pretended it was quantitative chem. I think if you done a lot of chem solution calculations and preparations before, this shouldn't be difficult.
Biochem also really helps in understanding some of the mechanisms when I read the drug guide (its been slow during the summer, and needed something to do at work). I think its because my school focus a lot on not just knowledge but on how to apply it. None of our questions are ever straight forward and straight memorizing doesn't work if you can't apply what you learned. Its like a few months back when we discovered that we have a few bottles of N-acetyl-cysteine in stock. The applications doen't become apparent unless you know the properties of the amino acid cysteine and where it is being administered. They are using it to break up disulfide bonds in mucus.
Or like when I read the ingredients in a energy drink, I might not know what those random herbal ingredients are, but I think I have an idea of what the drink is doing to my basic metabolism. The obvious stuff (sugars and intermediates) feeding Glycolysis, they using caffeine to keep citrate synthase active, vitamins as cofactors, while feeding the TCA cycle using transamination of the amino acids into alpha ketoglutamate.

you really should call them, I did because I hadn't received anything either, only to find out they were missing documents for me, one of my friends who's been through grad school before reminded me financial aid offices are the one dept that don't care if you get your stuff together you have to be on top of them! especially before its too late

I'm in the same boat. I'm gonna apply to like 15 schools and just go anywhere I get accepted because I would like to be done with school by the age of 30! Especially since i've been going nonstop. My life is mostly on hold until I finish school, so I wanna finish school and start my career!:zip:

Hi ,
You are such a kind guy on here to help us as applicants and just -accepted students with info about USN.
Thanks a lot.
BTW, i want to ask if we need to review any chem, bio or biochem before the P1 class starts?
Thanks

They will teach you everything you need to know. However, if you already know it, you don't have to work as hard in school when they teach it. If you are having lots of fun this summer, continue doing that so you show up relaxed and ready to learn. If you are bored out of your skull, you could pick up a biochem book and learn some pathways. I wouldn't feel bad if you don't get to it though.

Sorry have been super busy & didn't have time to post a reply. You don't need to make an appt, you show up, sign papers and wait for awhile like 2 hours. When its your turn you tell them what shots you need.
It's called South Health Center Immunizations 323-563-4114
I had my varicella titers done and got the results after 4 days but I tested negative so now I have to freaking redo that crap & get the shots. Not a happy camper considering I already had the damn chickenpox!

Thanks saki1210, most places that I called require a doctor's authorization to give blood test. How about this place of yours?
You'll need 4 weeks to get the chickenpox 2 shot series done, and the deadline is August 20, so I'm wondering what's up?
I had chickenpox too when I was 6 or 7 and I'm going to have titers tomorrow hoping it will show immunity.

diastole 08-26-2010, 07:26 AM For reapplicants, I strongly advise having something meaningful to put in your reapplicant essay. You don't want to get to that part and BS your way through it. Retake the PCAT, volunteer, get more pharmacy experience, etc. Just do something.

Thank you for all your information. I got waitlisted and I don't think I will get in this year. Should I mention that I got waitlisted in that specific part of reapplicant essay, or they can just see it by matching my social?!!

EDIT: never mind! I found last year's app. How is it that I did not see it last time I checked? Oh boy - need to improve my attention to detail hmmmm
I wish I had looked at the app last year while it was still available. Beyond the objective data like grades, etc... what do they ask? Are there several essays? etc....Is it general stuff like: why Pharmacy and how have you prepared? or is there more? Just trying to start to wrap my brain around what I will be writing.
VegasGirl1987 08-26-2010, 05:34 PM All of you guys that got waitlisted this year would you mind sharing your stats? Also are you a resident or a non resident? Do you have a bachelors? I am applying this cycle. Just want to see who I am competing against :):):)

I had a GPA of 3.7 and PCAT composit score of 84. The last time i got an email in June saying i was in the top 20 of wait list. I think I got waitlisted because i interviewed with a harsh professor called Dr. Barclay and also i raised some of the stuff that was written here on SDN as a concern at the end of the interview. My question was 'that USN gratuates have a hard time getting into residency due to their grading system. Eventhough he admitted it i don't think he liked that question. In the end it did not matter to me because i got accepted to my first choice school. I am attending University of Wisconsin-Madison, which is a great School.
Good luck to all of you guys.

I'm not sure. I know they are going to know you are a reapplicant but I don't know about the waitlist. You could always mention it in your interview. Saying something like, "last year I got waitlisted, so I did this, that, and the other thing to improve because I really want to get into USN" will get the info out there and highlight the positives.

You didn't get the Wal-Mart BBQ? Oh, that's not right. They had a choice of steak or chicken, baked potatoes with the full fixings, veggie type finger food, cookies, and some other food. It was a good BBQ. Families were even allowed to attend. Some of my classmates have cute kids.

I think it is a Henderson thing. This year all the classes plus their families were invited.
I haven't even heard of Unni. We had that block just before winter break with a different prof. It was easy but so very dull. Good luck.

Yeah, Unni is a new professor as of last year, its her second time teaching the course. I think she is only a Utah professor. The class is pretty dull....screw insurances and HMO's and PPO's and the history of healthcare...haha.
