I noticed so far all the pictures have been minorities. Being a minority myself. I wonder what the older pharmacists(caucasian, and male) think of the direction the profession is going.

I think that the high minority ratio on this board probably correlates with the high California ratio on this board. California is one of the most ethnically diverse states in the US.

Not true, you'll get into pharmacy school. I didn't get accepted to everyplace that I applied to. Not all schools place their emphasis on GPA. I applied to a school that based acceptance on academics, because I had good grades. However, I don't have any pharmacy work experience, which is why I didn't get into some other schools. You just have to find the right school. I spent a year just researching pharmacy schools, before I applied to any of them.

They haven't posted stats for this year. Last year, average GPA was 3.4 and average PCAT was 85%.

If you want to come to the south, look at Florida A & M, in Tallahassee. They don't require the PCAT and have slightly lower academic standards. It's a 6 year program and they'll admit you right from high school or you can transfer in at a later date.

Hey TCB, are you in college or HS right now? Are you getting ready to apply to pharm school? I wouldn't sweat the GPA thing too much...this year has been a crazy year in terms of numbers of applicants to pharm school. Although I suspect some of the more difficult schools to get into (in normal years) would probably have instituted GPA cutoffs for interviews, you wouldn't need ANYWHERE near 3.9 to get into pharm school (not even med school)

...get some real experience as a tech or clerk, make the most of it and gain valuable experience. It'll be good "fodder" for your personal statements and interviews. You'll most certainly get your fair share of interviews, and that'll be your time "to shine". Try your best not to obsess over the GPA thing. BTW, quite a few of my classmates don't have a bachelor's degree, but they had extensive tech experience. A friend of mine knows someone who got into UCSF (a few years ago) without a baccalaureate...again she had extensive tech experience and excellent grades in her prereqs.

You in MD? I got accepted to VCU/MCV with a 2.8ish GPA. I mean, it was for a different major but still, I must have the lowest GPA to be accepted into pharm school.

My saving points were: a drastic grade improvement for the last 2 semesters, an essay (that was not required) explaining my grades and decision to apply to Pharm., and an excellent PCAT score. I think my interview was only mediocre tho.

Oh, and I don't have a Bac degree, and I had no Tech experience when I applied.

I think the grade improvement shows your desire to work hard and comeback despite having made mistakes. I think that's what did it for me.

Please don't give up TCB. You may have a difficult time at school, and your gpa maybe lower than other people's on this forum. But you know what? You're not alone! There are many students's gpa just like yours, if not lower. The thing that can make you stand out is your determination!

To answer your question, yes, you should turn in your application as soon as you can because many people will do the same thing. You gotta make sure that you're not behind the pack. With that said, I need to remind you that turning in your best application is more important than an early but crappy application. So be sure that your application is at its best shape, even it takes more time.

This pharm forum is great! You should keep reading it!

However as I read this forum, I feel like my chances of getting in pharmacy school are slim, poor and none.You all are very intelligent, much probs to all of you.

Don't buy into that crap for a second. You'll get in. You're already doing the right thing by getting involved in research. Try and secure a leadership position if you're not applying till later on. A lot of schools put a lot of weight on extra-currics. I know ucsf definitely does. Come up with a personal statement that really expresses articulately your goals and reasoning.

I also don't think you're getting a fair sampe of the applicant pool. My GPA wasn't even close to UCSF's average incoming student and was accepted bc i had a lot of experience and busted a$% on my personal statement.

Alright, I give up my right to be an anonymous ranter. Actually I'm just a longtime fan and infrequent poster, but now that I've shown my face maybe I'll start coming out of my shell.

I'll be starting year one at U of Washington next year and I'm just beginning an internship at a hospital in downtown Seattle. There are a lot of kooky, funny and interesting pharmacists, techs and interns that I've met through this position. So far the experience has been very encouraging, as I was having some reservations about going down this path. Anyhow, the perspectives and positive vibes from this site have been much appreciated.

Minority is a relative term. When I took the PCAT I was definitiely a minority. I went with my friend Rajinder and he asked me if I was sure we were in the right room. He thought it was a club meeting for an asian student group. There were like 250 people. Of those people there were less than 10 white people, 2 black people, and my friend who is from India. It was pretty striking. And it made me smile.

I don't know how your class stacks up demographically, but my class is 2/3 female. So, you can be a minority for being male. But, the only special perk you'll get is the increased probability of getting a date to social events.

PS: To anyone concerned about getting in with a low GPA.
Mine was quite a bit lower than average and I was offered an interview at 10 of 11 schools that I applied to. After I recieved answers from my top 3, I had to turn the rest down. So, I guess GPA's don't really matter that much after all.

No, I'm not in pharmacy school right now... I WISH! I'm at PLU getting my BS in Biology (3rd year). If all goes well, I should be in pharmacy school fall 2007. I love UW, so hopefully that is where I end up. I'm applying to other places also.

I applied only to UW because I love this area so much (actually out of state tuition is atrocious). Even with a pharmacist's salary, it would take years to pay it back. Where are you looking to apply? So I hear the aroma down there is quite fun?

It's really only bad downtown kinda towards Puyallup... not the area that I live.

UW of course... WSU, PacificU and I'm sure a few others out of state. I'm trying to limit the number of schools I apply to because the little costs here and there add up so quickly (app fees, interview travel costs, etc). I know what you mean about out of state tuition.. IT'S RIDICULOUS!! I'm definitely crossing my fingers for UW though.

I gotta go but I'll be back on again this afternoon. It's fun actually talking to someone close to where I live pursuing pharmacy. It makes me feel like I'm not the only one in Washington :) See ya

I actually live really close to UPS and have about a 1/2 hour drive to PLU... it's in Parkland which I guess technically isn't Tacoma...

I have a cat named GK. We trapped two wild kittens a couple of years ago. They were outside freezing in winter. No one could touch them. They were frightened and hid all the time. My husband managed to get them into our garage and they lived there for several months. The vet finally took them in for adoption, but they sat there for 6 months in a cage. No one wanted the shy, wild, kitties. The vet tech named them GK (for Garage Kitty) and Mr. Brown. We took them with us when we bought our new house. Mr. Brown is still very shy and timid, but GK is a sweetie.

I'm applying to pharm school right now after graduating from ucla this last month (I'm a four year + 1 quarter graduate). I got interviews from USC and western.

This forum is so awesome, eveyrbody's been passing it around as the end-all be -all for free and convenient information about health professional schools.
