Hi,

I'm just starting to research residencies, and I was wondering what the word is on the COMLEX vs USMLE debate? I've heard that some allopathic programs will accept the COMLEX and that some won't...is that true? Does anyone know which ones do/don't or would consider both. Right now I'm planning on taking both next year at this time, but I wanted to get the general opinion (I will probably be applying for both MD and DO residencies slots as I would like to go out west, especially to CA and since there aren't many DO spots, I want to keep my options open).

Thanks for any advice, suggestions, etc... :D

It all depends on the residency programs you are applying to. There are many high quality programs that accept the COMLEX without the USMLE. On the other hand, there are programs out there that want to see the USMLE. Try calling the programs you are interested in, but be careful who you speak to because they might just say you have to take the USMLE when actually that is not the case. Also, speak to people who have successfully graduated from a D.O. school, and are going to an allopathic residency without the USMLE. I am going to an excellent program with only the COMLEX. Remember, that boards aren't everything as well.
