Any advice from years past on what is the best way to go this year? Should I keep looking for open prelim positions in the coming months or just try to do something else- research, observership, just a job? Any advice would really help! Javad 05-24-2010, 12:22 PM Hi I think the best to approach this is to look at how you can improve your application and have a back up plan (family medicine or IM). You should definitely try to do research and/or observership especially in a hospital that you will have a chance of matching. Also be very proactive in your research project. Try to take Step3 too if you can manage it time wise. Don’t give up and actively monitor online websites for open spots all year around. Hope this helps amistret 08-09-2010, 07:38 PM Hello, I am currently a Junior at a 4-year university studying Biology B.S. I am hoping to go to SGU when I graduate and study Medicine. I am wondering what would be my best shot for gaining entrance. I plan to volunteer at a local hospital, shadow doctors, and do research at my university. As well I am working my hardest to obtain a good GPA and good MCAT scores and other such things. It is hard to judge right now due to the fact that I know neither my GPA or my MCAT scores, however, I was just wondering what the average GPA for acceptance is if the applicant has the extracurriculars I plan to have? Thanks a lot. ~Anthony LadyMPH 08-10-2010, 11:54 AM Hello, SGU's average MCAT score is a 27/28 and the average GPA is 3.3/3.4 The extracurriculars are a great aspect to your application, things such as volunteering, research, clubs, organizations, shadowing, work experience in a health related setting and things of that nature. Hope this helps! amistret 08-11-2010, 10:25 AM That does help, thank you very much. ~Anthony HeadBanger 08-11-2010, 11:50 AM Also, keep in mind that SGU looks at the WHOLE application...not just GPA and MCAT. Letters of Rec matter (so get good ones when you shadow), work experience, etc...so you have the right idea...Keep working hard. SuitcaseLife 08-15-2010, 06:38 AM Yeah I agree. I was accepted to SGU with only 25 MCAT and 3.7 GPA. Obviously the standards are lower, b/c it's not LCME accredited. The average posted above is good for some US med schools (not necessarily the GPA though). I know lots of kids there with around the same stats as me as well. The average now may be inflated due to the 600-700 students per semester. My interview went very well, and I think that really helped. Don't be discouraged. amistret 08-19-2010, 08:45 AM Awesome thank you guys for all the help, I really appreciate it. ~Anthony amistret 08-26-2010, 07:27 PM Hey SGU medical students, can you answer a few questions for me please. Just wondering some miscellaneous stuff. How much free time do you guys have a week would you say? Are there good bonds with you and other classmates to study and help one another out? How you liking Grenada? What do you guys do for fun and to relax, any surfers? Thanks you guys. Im hopeing to go to SGU one day, so I just would like to know. Richardh 09-07-2010, 08:24 AM i hope someone gives us some ideas what amistret wrote =) GSPstudent 09-11-2010, 11:00 AM [QUOTE=amistret;10083641]Hey SGU medical students, can you answer a few questions for me please. Just wondering some miscellaneous stuff. How much free time do you guys have a week would you say? This all depends on your own time management skills. I would study immediately after class, then have some free time late night to watch a show, hang out with friends, or grab a drink. Sometimes I would switch this up to go to the beach for about an hour after class then hit the books. Same goes for the weekends, study hard so you can play hard, set aside time for both. Are there good bonds with you and other classmates to study and help one another out? Of course! SGU in my opinion seems pretty uncompetitive, of course there are those students who are going to bug you about what grade you got, ect.. A lot of students have study groups, or else they share information they may have thrown together like a study sheet ect. How you liking Grenada? Grenada is nice, it is a tropical vacation island. There are plenty of restaurants, some bars, a few good grocery stores. Because there are trourists there are alot of island activities to do. Life on the island is a bit slow, so it can be difficult adjusting to the mentality. Also it is a developing country, so you won't find a starbucks on every corner or a shopping mall, so that can be hard for some. You are only there for 2 years, it is fine for that period of time. What do you guys do for fun and to relax, any surfers? Beach, Bars, Going out to eat, Diving, Catamaran cruises, you can always find something. Waves are minimal, good for me, not for surfers, but there is wind surfing. Hope that helps Richardh 09-11-2010, 04:16 PM thanks for the answers gspstudent! amistret 09-12-2010, 11:09 PM your the man gsp, thanks homie |
