I am just curious, is it better to be in a program with a night float where you only have overnight calls on weekends, or without night float where you might be q4 or q3 with post call day off.

Anyone have any opinions???

Can not imagine having survived residency without night float. We had NF in place for the wards but in the ICU we had the traditional overnight call. The ICU experience was much more exhausting and wearing on one's sleep pattern. Doing a month of NF per year is also painful but at least it's shift work and you get it all out of the way at one time.

I haven't started yet but I must say as an MS3 and 4 I really liked the post call day off (on the services that actually let us go home). With our hours, there is no way to even go to a bank otherwise.
