Just wanted to get a thread started for those that are planning on applying to the new dental school at ECU. Any information, news, and updates would be great to hear.

Has any NC people been to ECU yet to see the construction or meet anyone?

I plan on applying there. Their focus on small town dentistry and the shortage in NC is right down my alley, so I'm pretty excited that they are opening.

I don't believe construction starting until very recently. They had hoped to have had the first floor of the building completed and to work out of there for the first year, but it looks more and more like the first year will be spent hopping around other buildings.

In other news: just yesterday they officially changed the degree they will be offering from DDS to DMD, and changed their name form ECU School of Dentistry to ECU School of Medicine.

Cool, thanks for the update. I try to hit the web page every so often to catch up, but I missed that.

I think that it will be nice to be a NC resident applying this year, with ECU opening and UNC increasing enrollment (which is still happening, right?) there are a lot more spots available.

ChapelHillT

Ehh, I wish UNC was increasing enrollment this year. My understanding is that that is still 2-3 years off. The new building at UNC should open around early 2012, so I'd guess at the earliest theyd increase from 81 to 100 spots would be the next application cycle. I believe I recall hearing from the Dean at UNC that it would be 2-3 though.

But, all 50 spots at ECU are in-state, so that's a substantial increase for in-state candidates.

I will probably also be applying. I really want to go to UNC but most people do so competition is stiff. I heard that both ECU and UNC are increasing class sizes to 70 and 100 respectively in 2012. As for ECU, we had a speaker come talk to our pre dental society about it and in terms of the building, he said that they had some issues getting permits to start building and that they had a problem with design in terms of how to clean the glass dome of the building because it is very high.

@jmt1984: not really, only advantage to having a FB account is you get the updates when you sign into your account without going to the actual ECU Dental Fan page, otherwise if you check it on your own you can view everything a person with a FB account can.

Anyone know how difficult the initial accreditation process is? ie-have there ever been any schools that have not passed the initial accreditation process and had to try again later?

If so this could be a concern for those of us interested in ECU. I was just reading up on the process on their website and came across the following: "Offers of admission to ECU School of Dental Medicine will be contingent upon the program receiving notification of Initial Accreditation in early 2011." It'd be rough to be offered admission and count on going there only to find out they weren't accredited.

Any thoughts/experience with this in the past? I don't know anything about the accreditation process so I figured I'd throw it out there for someone who does...

When maggie wilson from admissions came to talk to our pre-dental club she said no school has never not gotten initial accreditation I think it is just one of those formalities that needs to be taken care of to ensure the dental school will have a successful program.

Just a heads up, ECU announced today via their facebook group that they will not require a supplemental application fee, which I'm guessing is the $70 that is listed on the AADSAS .pdf ???

Interview Invite today!!! Took the DAT this past Monday, and emailed them my scores hoping for an earlier decision. Looks like it worked out.

I posted here, b/c the title of this thread is a little more appropriate for those applying. Good luck to everybody on their interviews.

Congrats to those with interviews! After reading some posts, it seems that some ppl were invited prior to submitting their secondaries, correct? I submitted my secondary already, I hope the turn-around time is fast.:xf:

Anyone else heard any news regarding the number they plan on interviewing etc?

MrWilson
08-16-2010, 10:04 AM
No I had not submitted my secondary yet before I got the interview invite. I'm going to attempt to complete it today. I'm not sure how many they'll be interviewing, but I just scheduled my interview, and the guy said they'll be interviewing on Tuesdays and Wednesdays through February. UNC interviews close to 200 in-state applicants, so I'm guessing it will be about the same for ECU. Good luck!

I was told there were going to be 8 applicants/day. It is a long day, 8am-2pmish. Starts off by everyone meeting, then meeting the dean if hes around, then they jump straight into the interviews. Afterward there is an "educational" time where I suppose we will learn more about the school. Then they'll provide lunch followed by a meeting with someone from financial aid. Somewhere in there he said thered be a tour too, though I'm not quite sure what we'd tour. I'm sure all this info will be in the email before we arrive, so if I've missed anything someone please correct me. good luck ya'll

I'm not worried about it, the curriculum is going to be accredited, same as any other dental school, and the administration seems to be well experienced (reading the bio's on the ECU page).

The biggest disadvantage I would see with being the 1st class is that there isn't any upperclassmen to ask for advice/help.

Like anything that grows, you're going to have growing pains. I think it's a great and an exciting experience to be the first class and to leave a mark on the school. The faculty will do everything in their power to ensure the first couple of classes succeed in the classroom, the boards, and after graduation. They have a very well qualified administration in place. I may be a little biased considering I'm a very pround alumnus. I still remember reading an article in the school paper when I was a freshman in the fall of '02 about the idea and how it was shut down originally. Thankfully, ECU still pursued the idea four years later, and I hope I'm fortunate enough to be in the first class. I think it'll be an exciting time to be a part of it all.

I went home (west of I95) after graduation and worked for a year, then returned to grad school at ECU for a couple of years. For a few reasons, I transferred and I'm currently finishing grad school at NCSU, while working in pharma. If you don't mind me asking, where did you conduct your research? (and) were you a freshman at ECU in '02 as well?

So I did my Master's work in Pennsylvania (small mid-size state school) then moved to NC in the summer of '08 and have worked at Duke in research since then. I did my undergrad work up north as well, though ECU looks like it would have been an awesome school to attend.

yeah, it was in the information email they send out about 2 weeks before your interview with hotel info and such.

Once you check in, Chris will direct you to the conference room where we will be meeting. Be prepared to have your picture taken shortly after your arrival. We will share information about the Doctor of Dental Medicine program, and provide an opportunity for you to ask questions. You will then have several individual interviews with members of the Admissions Committee, and will participate in a group learning activity. We will provide lunch, and you will tour the Health Sciences campus.

Interesting. Well, it would be great if someone who has interviewed there already could shed some light on the experience. I understand that 'divulging' information while interviews are being conducted could give later interviewees as slight leg up, but it would be great if someone could at least give some insight.

It doesn't strike me as something that should be dreaded 'a group learning activity' is something that everyone at this point in the process should be able to handle. (All I can think of are those games where you say a word that describes you and also is the first letter of your name:laugh:)

So I was thinking, and wanted to see what people thought of this: The number of applicants that ECU will accept will be quite high (relative to the number of seats) because of 'competing' with UNC for high quality applicants.

I think everything that I have read about ECU so far has sounded great, the interview feedback has left me impressed, and I like the idea of a new school, however, UNC is a 'known' quantity. With this in mind, assuming most in-state applicants get interviews (and accepted) to both schools, does anyone think that ECU will have to accept a higher number (proportionally) to fill the 50 seats?

My guess would be that both schools will have interviewed a similar number of applicants by Dec. 1st.

NRG
10-19-2010, 06:46 AM
I applied to both schools.
Got interviewed at ECU. nothing from UNC yet.

its a toss up between the two.

But I do think more people would goto UNC over ECU if they had the chance. It would not surprise me if ECU gave mini scholarships or something along those lines to keep their seats filled.

I heard about a student, or students who received full rides to UNC if they work in north carolina for 5 years after they graduate. So i dont know. if that is true, then maybe ECU may do the same? but offer more incentive to fill seats.

jmt1984
10-19-2010, 06:56 AM
Yeah, I haven't heard anything from UNC either, and I'm probably rationalizing things to myself. Interesting about the scholarships though, I've seen similar programs before (through the Feds or state I think).

MrWilson
10-19-2010, 07:41 AM
Based on what I was told at my ECU interview, they had scheduled 90 interviews through Dec, and this number is including those that have already interviewed since late Sept. If they plan on interviewing through Feb (I think this is what I was told), then you can probably make an educated guess that they will interview around 150. They also mentioned that they will not give out all the seats to the class on Dec 1st.
I met a few in-staters at my UNC interview this past Saturday that had not received an interview or even heard from ECU, which was interesting.
Your assumption is probably right in regards to more students would jump at the chance to go to UNC over ECU, for the simple fact that it's an established and a very highly-regarded school. Because of that assumption, ECU may wait to see who receives a UNC acceptance, and then send its acceptances to those that had not received an acceptance from UNC on Dec 1. This is all pure speculation, but this is in fact the mindset of ECU's medical school. My best friend applied only to those two schools, and originally had ECU as #1. UNC accepted him, but he was denied at ECU. When he met with the dean of admissions at ECU, he was told, "well, you got into UNC; we figured you would go there anyhow regardless if we accepted you."
(And) The two schools may be communicating back and forth regards to which prospective students they want. I hope not, but who knows.

ECUpirate19
10-19-2010, 04:55 PM
that is a really interesting thought. It would suck to get rejected from UNC because ECU wanted you or for ECU to reject you just because UNC accepted you.

jmt1984
10-20-2010, 05:53 AM
Interesting comments, I guess my broader thought was that on the surface the two schools are 'working together' but behind the scenes will be scrambling to get the best in-state applicants out of the pool, and it will be interesting to see how ECU competes with an established school like UNC.

jmt1984
11-10-2010, 09:55 AM

Well I'm sure they will for future classes. But you know the point of it is to see previous classes stats and distributions and none of that information is available. The only thing they would've been able to put up there is class size and tuition.

The only reason I wanted it up there was so I can add it to my applied/interviewed list :)

Yeah, true, but I was thinking back to an earlier discussion about how the two schools may be 'coordinating' interviews/acceptances behind the scenes and having to look at each person's page is tedious.

Yeah, true, but I was thinking back to an earlier discussion about how the two schools may be 'coordinating' interviews/acceptances behind the scenes and having to look at each person's page is tedious.

Oh i didn't read about that. You think UNC and ECU are working together??

NRG
11-30-2010, 10:14 AM
if im not mistaking i think you can also see current class information as well.

if you find the predents thread, you can see that a hand full (or maybe just 2-3) of schools were requested and added, but for some reason they never did ECU.

Yeah, I think it was earlier on this thread (and also the UNC vs. ECU thread), most people were speculating on the issue of UNC being an established school, ECU being new and how ECU would 'compete' for applicants with UNC in various ways.

NRG

i posted earlier about my thoughts on UNC/ECU and interview sharing of sorts. something like ECU has requested UNC to leave some students for ECU to accept or something like that. it sounds weird.

Im pretty sure most ECU applicants are capable of a UNC interview and vice versa. But from some talk on the forum, it seems like a small number of those interviewed at one school has also interviewed at the other. i know this forum makes up a small percentage of the applicant pool, but thats just what i think.

(only because i havnt had an interview there.:laugh::laugh:)

like everyone has been thinking, what will make a student that is accepted to both, goto UNC? tuition could be an answer, but when taking a loan, i cant imagine a huge difference between the two. my only though it scholarships ? ?

No I think that it is a legit point, I would think living in that part of the state, scholarships like you mentioned, family, etc. would be the motivators for applicants, but like I stated before, in my opinion I think ECU will 'over-accept' on Dec. 1st to compensate for the people that may not have heard from UNC or to hedge their bets on the applicants that want to go to a more 'established' school.
(If accepted to both)I would prefer greenville to chapel hill simply because the area is more in line with what I grew up with and think I would be more comfortable there, even if that means moving there.

I

I had a mid-November interview and at that time they said that by the time they are done interviewing, they will probably have interviewed about 300 applicants.

300? I think thats more than the total number of in state residents who applied to chapel hill last year or the previous year. This would mean all in state residents would receive an interview, correct?

Interesting, seems like a lot of post-dec interviews if this is all accurate. (90 pre-dec 1, ~210 post Dec. 1)

Does this mean that they may have trouble filling the spots after the first round of acceptances? Most schools do not interview that many applicants after dec 1st (proportionally) right?

I think last year UNC had around 250 in-state folks apply.

did they interview EVERY tues/wedn starting on sept. 28/29? if so it would be more than 90.

i got 144 with the interviews ending last wedn. at 8 interviewee's per day.

but i dont know what the official schedule was. all i know is they started sept. 28 (tuesday) and were running every tues/wedn.. Im assuming 8 people per day. But i just dont know when they ended pre dec. 1st interviews. my guess would be last wedn.

Interesting tidbit, though no offense, I'm a bit skeptical about the early acceptance. Rumors always start flying about now.

I guess any news other than 'no' after any interview is good news, in a way.

Wonder why I didn't get an e-mail, I feel left out.. lol

To those who received the e-mails today, do you feel the interview experience went well?

Very true. When did you interview? I felt like my interview went well. I don't have great stats (3.55, 19 19 20) and am otherwise average in terms of service and volunteering. Just repeating info I heard from other people so I can't say for certain if anyone got in or not.

Thanks! I interviewed at UNC as well and was surprised to hear that a lot of the students did not receive an interview at ECU. I think ECU is really big on seeing applicants with good volunteer hours and time spent with activities such as the MOM clinics, as it plays right into their main values and mission. I can't speak for everyone but I got the email earlier today and my AADSAS status is NOT blank. This is what the email said:

"As promised, we wanted to update you regarding the status of your application to the ECU School of Dental Medicine. We appreciate your interest in our school, and we enjoyed having the opportunity to visit with you. At this point in time, your application is currently under active review by the Admissions Committee, but a final decision has not yet been made.

A rolling admissions process, such as ours at ECU, is very dynamic, and it is important that we remain in close communication throughout the remainder of the admissions cycle. Just as you will receive information regarding the status of your application at other schools, we will continue to receive additional information about our applicants.

If you receive offers of admission from other schools, we would encourage you to consider them carefully. If you receive an offer from another school that you decide to accept, we would appreciate your notifying us, so that we can make the appropriate notations in your admissions file. Should you receive an offer that you are seriously considering, but you still want to actively pursue admission at ECU, we would urge you to contact us to see when we might project that a final decision regarding your application could be made.

Again, we appreciate your considering our school for your professional education, and we look forward to continuing to be in contact with you during the admissions process."

I agree, I haven't heard of any rejections...makes me wonder how great being on the 'waitlist' really is. Anyways, we'll see in the next couple weeks if there is any movement.

i don't think they've handed out any rejections. and the "waitlist" isn't really a waitlist yet since they haven't filled the class. it's more like a "we didn't accept you today but we might in the future"

I wonder... how many people got offers this morning.. It seems that there are more of us with "waitlist" email than those with actual acceptance letter.. ERR!! I wish they could just tell us what's the real purpose of sending out that "waitlist" email.. sorry people, i'm just scared that it's gonna turn out to be a rejection :(

It is weird, but who knows how chaotic it is for them, maybe they are waiting until they know who is accepted today from UNC??

I just don't like how open-ended this 'waitlist' e-mail sounded...could be awhile until we know anything, one way or the other. Hard to know what the next steps should be.

when did you receive your call/e-mail?

I interviewed on the 23rd of November. I did get the blank last night but then this morning at 8 a.m. it said "offer made." I got a phone call at around 9 from Dr. Taylor and then got the email around 9:30.

I also received a phone call today as well from ECU this afternoon. AADSAS has been updated to "Offer Made". Also interviewed at UNC but have not received a phone call from them, but i guess we will have to see later in the cycle whether there is any sort of correlation between applicants being accepted to one school or the other (but I doubt there is any sort of collaboration).

Thanks it was tough to stay committed. Again to all those who may not make it this cycle get with Dr. Wilder/Dr. Wilson and see what you may need to do next year. I went every year to Chapel Hill and asked what the next step was for me. I would have done the same for ECU. They appreciate the effort. Good Luck! Don't think that there will be a next time for me if it doesn't work out. I've been at this awhile (first applied in 2005 cycle) so I don't know that there is much else I can do, it would be awesome to get it, but I really just need closure at this point.

Good luck to everyone here, I've met some cool people this year and think everyone here has the potential to make fine dentists.

I really don't think you should give up. What have you been doing these past years to improve your application? If you haven't met with the Directors/Deans, I'd advise you to do that. A Masters will also help, and I know that is the only reason I made it in this cycle. If you have been trying all these years, don't just quit now. I know it's tough to stay confident, hopeful and persistent, but it will pay off in the end.

I sincerely hope you don't throw in the towel man. It was great meeting you at the interview, and though I don't know you well, my first impressions were that you'd make a great doc. Since undergrad graduation in 2006 I finished a Master's with thesis, while working with/shadowing an oral surgeon doing research for the two years. Some of our research panned out and we patented some of my work (and started a biotech company). He was big on the lecture circuit and I had some really unique opportunities to meet people, and co-authored two textbook chapters with him used in dental schools. I moved to NC a couple years back and I have been working in the research field and have had a moderately successful publishing record. The 'bad' parts of my application are my relative lack of volunteer work, which I've starting working on the last year, but its tough to find time quite honestly. I also feel my 'lowish' undergrad GPA is a factor, which is why I did the Master's.

Its been a long road, but it's still early in the cycle, maybe the ECU waitlist will start moving in a couple weeks, or maybe I'll hear about a UNC interview. If I don't have luck this cycle, I need to have a sit down with the wifey and plan my next steps.

dont give up boss,

im C/O '06 from NCSU as well and this is my 3-4th year trying. ive been fortunate to stay in the dental field for a long time and i think my GPA/DAT is what is hurting me. but im not taking that damned test again. i may take a few classes to help with my GPA though if i have to. maybe a 1 year non-thesis masters if i can find one.

but like everyone has been saying. its early. i honestly didnt expect this from ECU. i felt like i nailed my interview. but it could be the fact that with my average GPA and DAT, they want to be portrayed as a school with above average scores when people look them up.

i thought once you get an interview, thats what they mostly judge you on. i guess not.

so we'll see. there is a lot of confusion going on and hopefully it can all be sorted in our favor.

That may be correct, but it seems though they would accept more than 20 students if they are trying to fill a class of 50, but then again who knows. We will have a better idea of how many were accepted and are interested when the special event takes place on the 17th.

In my opinion, accepting 20 for a class of 50 seems kind of low, especially when you consider not everyone you accept will commit, but I hope that its true, it gives us on the 'wait-list' some hope. (especially when you consider that ppl that are wait-listed at ECU may get accepted elsewhere and commit there)

What special event is occuring on the 17th? I missed the reference.

Yeah it's basically allowing you, your peers, and family members learn more about the school, the technology being used, etc.

Also, I realize 20 is low, but it is pretty much on par with what Dr. Wilson told me. She said they will interview ~300 applicants until next February and will not be accepting all students on Dec 1st. I'm sure there will be a lot more movement after Jan. 5th, which is the date we have to give them a formal response on whether or not we want to accept their invitaiton.

When do you think you will let them know (one way or the other?)

I have been reading through the posts related to UNC and ECU and I only wish the best for all applicants.

To those that are in limbo/waitlist/paranoia/plotting/etc...please, just take some deep breaths...relax. You are still in the game, and until you hear otherwise there is really no point in investing energy in generating a laundry list of hypothetical situations/scenarios.

Congratulations to those that were accepted!

I interviewed in November and recieved the 'waitlist' e-mail on December 1st. I wouldn't necessarily call it a waitlist e-mail though. More like an 'active review' e-mail instead. *Trying to stay positive.* Waitlists are more when the class has been largely filled and the school needs a couple of back up's just in case someone decides to drop in the last minute.

For those of you that are waiting (interviewed or not) like me, what are you all doing? Does anyone know if sending additional letters of recommendation or academic/employment update letters makes a positive difference?

I'm just trying to stay busy over the next few weeks so I don't dwell on it. I think UNC should be sending out the interview invites for the Jan. interviews next week at some point, but other than that, nothing.

I interviewed early Dec as well and haven't heard anything. I'm expecting the adcom will wait until next week since deposits for Dec. 1st acceptances were due January 5th. Still hoping to hear tomorrow though.

I would give it a few days. the final date was the 5th. meaning the 6th would be the first day they could see how many open spots they have. im thinking it has to be next week sometime. maybe monday/tuesday/wedn.

Interviewed early December and havent heard anything yet. I've been thinking for a while that we would hear back this week.

A friend of mine who interviewed yesterday said they wouldn't hear back for a month(??)

After speaking to the dean of admissions, I believe he stated that the comittee would meet once in January and once in February. Perhaps that's why there's about a month wait as they probably make offers/interview decisions on those days.

I gave chris a call earlier and he said they will notify at the end of the month.

hopefully this means its all at once and not "rolling" like we're all expecting.

that way we can at least relax for 2 weeks and not be on the fence.:thumbup::thumbup:

That is cruel and unusual punishment to make you all wait two more weeks. Nevertheless, in the big scheme of things, I guess two more weeks isn’t that bad; after all, you'll forget all the about the wait when you get the acceptance call. Good luck to everyone!

Interesting, thanks for the update.

I had called and talking with Chris a week or so ago, and he left me with the impression that the adcom was meeting soon and we would be hearing soon after that (similar to the info from the post above). Anyways, if you talked with the dean, she would know. Seems like if they are waiting until mid-feb that is close to the time that people should be hearing back from UNC on 2nd round acceptances also.

Anyone else hear anything?

ECU officially announced the fourth community dental center will be in Lillington which is in Harnett County. The other three are located in Elizabeth City, Ahoskie and Sylva. Six more are to be announced. I've heard rumblings about Davidson County, but who knows.

I don't have a lot of hope of hearing anytime soon, at least not for me. Last I heard from Dr. Wilson, I was told I wouldn't hear anything until mid-Feb at the earliest. I can't imagine they'd wait that long to hand out more of their seats to some of you guys though, so I'm assuming that just pertains to my app (which honestly is somewhat weak given my terrible sci-gpa). I get the feeling the door is slowly closing on me for this year, but that's alright, I'll give it another run next cycle.

On a brighter note, I don't know if everyone has been checking the status of the construction, but that hole in the ground is finally turning into a building! Pretty neat to watch it go up!

You are at least the second person to hear about being notified in mid Feb. I had called a couple weeks ago, Chris made it sound like the adcoms were meeting and would notify people relatively soon, which is also what someone else had posted. Who really knows? What's a little more waiting?

I've stopped trying to figure out when ECU is going to hand out next round acceptances, because it seems like everyone you talk to has a different date or story. I think a lot of what ECU does as far as filling their seats is concerned will depend on how many people get accepted to UNC that already have an acceptance to ECU and of those how many will go to UNC over ECU and open up seats. Being a new school they have alot to figure out and variables to deal with... but we have all waited this long what is a little longer. Just my 2 cents.

I have an interview next Wednesday at ECU and supposedly it's the 2nd to the last week of interviews. Chris said the ad com would be meeting on the 24th I believe. I doubt they would meet next week, and then meet again on the 24th but that's just speculation. Perhaps the 24th might be the last Ad Com meeting and all decisions will be made.

I believe a number of us have heard the admissions committe met last week and to expect to hear back around the middle of February. It's possible that acceptances may go out this week or next and then final decisions made at the end of the month.

When I spoke with Dr. Wilson, she informed me that they are accepting applicants on a "rolling" basis with no set date as to when a specific meeting might be or anything of that nature. I'm just looking towards the next application cycle and trying to keep my head up. This will be my third time applying...I guess that's what I get for being "non-traditional." Hey everyone! Well I attended the even "you're profession starts here" and it was really informative and i just want to let yall know that ECU is going to be an amazing dental school (ahead of lots of others in learning style/technology) no matter which class you enter as!!

As far as admissions - do NOT quote me - but I did talk to Dr. Wilson today (she's awesome!) and she says that the class is NOT full and that they are still admitting people. She did not give me specifics, but she said that there were those accepted on Dec 1 and that there were acceptances given out after that. She said that there are interviews next week and then made it seem like after that, the decisions will be made! So rolling... or at once at the end of Feb... who knows?? Hope this helps a little?? Keep the faith strong!

Alsooooo just some stats! Dr. Wilson said that there were around 390 applicants and they interviewed around 250... for 50 seats... that is incredibly competitive. We were discussing how hard that decision is to make so please don't get discouraged. Try again! trust me, ECU is worth it!!

Not quite sure yet, I paid deposits to ecu as well as maryland. I am going to Maryland in a couple of weeks to check some things out, after that I am going to ecu, then I can hopefully make my decision. If I had the choice between Ecu and UNC like some of the people have, I would honestly go with ECU. Unless you know you want to do research or are 100 percent sure you are going to specialize, I believe ECU will better prepare us as general dentists.

That is a lot more applications that I thought there would be...I'm surprised that they interviewed so many, I think UNC interviews about the same number for almost 2x the spots.

i was also at the Feb 10th seminar, and can confirm the numbers sneil is putting up. seemed much smaller than the Dec event, although i would say closer to about 15 students. while i just found out unc doesn't want me and i will definitely be going to ecu this fall, almost every other student i met was still deciding between ecu and at least another school.

I also spoke with Dr. Wilson, Lamont, Chris, as well as a couple of the other faculty members, and everyone indicated there were still 2-3 more interview dates remaining, but it seemed that a final answer by the end of the month is in fact imminent
