i would say you are doing fine...higher is always better but u aint doing bad....i was scoring somewhere around the same when i was practicing the papers...in the finals i gave you my brake up..i lost around 15 questions(changed the answers to wrong ones) when i was revising after i completed the exam...

well just be relaxed...and i had found dentessentials by kaplan a very useful book for revision....

does anyone know the minimum score needed in each section to pass?

It depends on the test, but you have to score at the national average for the test to pass. I don't know about others, but the national averages on my test were around in the 60-70s. So scoring well above them, pimped up my score. You don't just need to pass the exam (that's unless you are already enrolled in school).Good luck.

26th july but thinking of postponing it for a month or so....

I got 90. Scored in high 80s on all of the subjects. The average of those was 70-75. I took the exam close to the end of last year though. GOod luck to all of you!:luck:

I guess the reasons that many foreign-trained dentists get low part I score probably are:

1. NBDE part I clinical cases probably are much more difficult than before. This is a weak link for most foreign-trained dentists. American dental students have already taken oral medicine and diagnose class before they take part I. So if you want to shoot a high score you have to work on clinical cases very hard. Pay attention to oral clinical manifestations when you study the NBDE.

2. Since the ADA changed the policy, many foreign-trained dentists can not take NBDE as many times as before. Unlike the situation now, in last several years some foreign-trained dentists use to take part I again and again until they shot a satisfying score. So this game becomes more and more fair. So it is actually a good news for most foreign-trained dentists.

I just wanted to ask the retakers..is 2010 version different than the last 2 years?In terms of clinical cases or anything else?I got 86 when I gave it, and there were no repeats..so please give an insight based on this.

i had already replied to similar questions in a diff thread..

Anyways, i had studied from decks 2009-10, first aid for NBDE, kaplan lecture notes, lipponcott for biochem, wikipedia for stuff i didnt u/s n solved almost all ASDA papers.
Try n solve all the questions discussed in SDN forum, n give reasoning to each ans, instead of just memorizing the answers.
i studied for 3 an a half months for 5-6 hrs initially n later towards end around 8-9 hrs.
i felt the exam was tough, but if u clear with ur basics u should be able to crack it.

i gave my exam on 3rd feb n received my score on 1st of march.
a frd of mine got her score report in 10 days.. so i guess it just varies.

All in all this is about 10 points less than I was getting on released exams. Strategy = close to 400 hours of time, went through decks once, first aid once, a handful of practice exams, and wikipedia was pretty useful too. I didn't really use books, but never have in school. Though, the best study strat is to learn as much as you can during your preclinical years.

I walked out thinking I had gotten a composite in the mid to high 80s and was pleasantly surprised to receive a 96. Just keep your heads up and study what you can but make sure to take breaks often. At the end of the day, we'll all be dentists as long as it's a 75+.

p.s. Sorry for the singular post (not trying to troll), I did not want my scores to be released to everyone who knows my UN.

Hey hey hey, drstoic. Do NOT ask remember questions! I don't want to get in trouble. $y score will be voided if I do. Basically the exam is like pilot exam, all mixed up, there is no per subject anymore and there are lots of testlets.

The asked a lot about diabetesn all kind of diabetes you should know, respiratory alkalosis and acidosis, lots of occlusion and tmj, order of eruptions, you have to know all the disease to help you a lot on the testlets, glucogenolysisn gluconeogenesis and glycolisis, hormons, hypophysis ant and post, adrenal glandsn
You don't iglnore the upper limb anatomy. Typr of cells lining our body from PDL to rectum. Know cold about neck triangles, heart disease and all kind of disease related. You need to know the recent epidemic disease.

This was a great thread! I used the data you all provided to make a spreadsheet that will convert your raw practice test scores to a NBDE1 composite score. Just type in your # correct out of 400 (raw score) and it will calculate your board score. It is quick, and not incredibly accurate, but it was the best I could do with the data provided. Check it out!

Basically, you need about 325/400 to get a 90 on the NBDE1.

kit kat dentist. i have taken it on 21st of this month. No body knows. They say 2-4 weeks. I just want to know exactly. Can you inform me if you get.

@umbrella84, It all depends on whether you are citizen or non immigrant. If you are not acitizen, it might be difficult, but can't say that its impossible. They look at overall profile. Look towards that and try to build up. I am waiting for the result, I am scared. My exam was tough.

I think he's a US dental student taking Part I (like I am).

These NBDE I forums are so saturated with foreign-trained applicants, I think it is easy to forget that US-based dental students are also taking the exam.

So writing my TOEFL, this month, let me apply then probably let me see. My G.P.A is less than 3. so no chances, need to build my profile. It takes hell lot of time. How abt your plans with your 82 score. my friend got interview from colorado with same percentile. Her gpa is 3.56, but she didnt get admission.

You are ridiculous, of course its possible to get more than a 90 just by using those sources. Might not be the norm, but you make it sound like he's lying. Im fairly confident I scored over 90 and I also only used first aid and decks...

You as dental student,,its possible bec. in ur school they give u all of the HIGH yield material and later as a review u guys do nbde ist aid and decks...other than that noooooo way..to get 90,,,..common sense..

People say that once you start scoring 85+ in ASDA papers you know that you are prepared for your exam... so i just wanted to know that the 85+ score they talk about is from the first attempt on the test or a repeated attempt after learning the mistakes???? coz im just able to score in the late 70s and early 80s in my first attempt!

So i think if you are scoring 85 in all of the exams. its 320 altogether in all subjects combined together, so do laltest papers like I-J,I-K,I-L, to know where you are standing

@bratdoc: I have given my TOEFl and it went really went very bad. Previously got 89. Now i don't think i will get 80. Let me see. Thanks for the support. Will prepare for NBDE-2 from tomorrow. It seems that, NBDE-2 is pretty tough when compared with part-1. All of them who took it said this. Let me see. For part-1, i took 1.5 yrs and so i might take >1.5 yrs for this.

I was just given a booklet from one of my upper year colleagues with all the old papers. Same with the decks. I'm sure you'll be able to find the old papers and decks in a torrent online somewhere. I've heard about people finding them that way.

You can get a new copy of the ASDA papers buy going to their website. Or if you don't want to spend that much. You can buy it cheaper from somebody who already has it or on ebay or from your friends.

For the Dental Decks too, you can buy it for chepaer form somebody else or the original ones from http://www.dentaldecks.com/Pages/Default.aspx

if you memorize every word on the decks you'll get 90

I would say I spent 4-5 months because I took about 20- 25 days off in these 5 months from studies on 2 occasions. I started studies with about 9-12 hours in the beginning and in the last 2 months tried to make it more than 12 hours though its very variable. I feel one needs to set realistic targets, to begin with and plan in the beginning of the preparation as to when is the last date by when "you HAVE TO take the exam". Then set goals according to each month and try to achieve them on a day to day basis. Even if we do not get to achieve a target on one day, try to cover a little more what you set out for. I studied Biochemistry, Pathology and Microbiology from USMLE lecture notes. Physiology from Linda Costanzo [BRS physiology] and Kaplan review, depending on how much I could study from where and retain. Anatomy from Kaplan Review thoroughly with supplemental study from my undergraduate books i.e. Inderbir singh (head and neck,essentials of anatomy book, histology and embryology; books). Dental Anatomy; the morphology from various sources by making notes from Decks/ NBDE first aid/Kaplan/Fullers/Wheelers, and TMJ & Occlusion from Okeson, Orbans and Kaplan review. Multiple reviewing of whatever you have read is the key, I believe. Try to consolidate what we have read into one source, like making notes for Dental Anatomy,Occlusion, Biochemistry, Anatomy etc. they help you in the end days, and save time. Look at lot of Diagrams for anatomy, and DA, they help you store information easily in the head. Make single flow charts for a particular group like Carbohydrates together, it helps remember things with inter-linkages, for biochemistry. All these things helped me. I was aiming for a little higher score but still I wouldn't crib. Would put hard work in what is left for now.

you are not the only one cindrella ,even i'm having hard time managing reviewing stuff frm decks kaplan n doin ques at same time.i guess it happens to evryone .just have faith in yourself and keep working hard.

I do not know what to say on this but earlier when I started I was also listening to a lot of people around me, but some where down the line I realized that what works for others is not working for me so I changed the whole methodology and stuck to my conviction. Many people even used to discourage me that I have not read decks more than1 or 1n a half times, but I believed to stick to the material which I read. Instead of doing decks like 3 -4 times I concentrated more on my own material and then supplementing it with USMLE first AID which is a way better resource than the NBDE first AID, its because of the fact that in NBDE first aid they have left a lot of important information considering that our exam is easier than USMLE step 1.
I feel the additional material I used made me get a more comprehensive knowledge of the subjects while USMLE first aid helping me retain the high yield stuff.

I did the ASDA papers while I was preparing and just did the combined papers majorly in the end, to access my preparation. Also I did not at all look through L, M, N series till the very end, so as whatever I was scoring was not because of any repeated answers which I knew.
Just go and write the exam when you are confident of the preparation. Doesn't matter how late you do that, because its a single take exam and its gonna have complete impact on shaping our career ahead. Good Luck.

Exactly, you got right to the point. Pure memorization can only get you so far, application of the stuff you crammed in and doing it on test day is what will push the score to 90+... especially stuff like dental anatomy where you need to apply information to score high. :thumbup:
