Jumpman04 10-19-2010, 03:23 PM Anyone attend that additional "Medical School Experience Program" interview? Wonder how it differs from the traditional interview...anyone got the details?
USCTrojan11 10-19-2010, 07:01 PM Anyone attend that additional "Medical School Experience Program" interview? Wonder how it differs from the traditional interview...anyone got the details?
First one is on Friday bro.
aidama 10-19-2010, 07:28 PM Whoever cancelled their interview on December 7th, thanks! Finally found an interview date that didn't conflict with an exam or quizzes given in my SMP. A little weird that I'll be flying to FL for the interview, back to PA to take my finals and then back to FL for winter break.. but alas :)
BioGene 10-19-2010, 08:42 PM Hey Guys!
I dont write much on SDN but wanted to wish everyone luck and congratulate on those that got in! I think NSUCOM is an amazing school and I cant wait to start next year ! This gap year is really easy going for me and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions or useful tips that may make the med school transition a little easier? Is it a bit too eager to pick up a USMLE / COMLEX step 1 review book to try to establish a basis of what Ill be up against? Any particular review or medical books I should start looking at now?
Thanks!

From what I have heard, there is no point in studying early. No matter what you do, you are still going to be flooded with information, so enjoy your free time while you still have it :)
Nate4140 10-20-2010, 01:11 PM So I was complete 8/18 (with secondaries). I still haven't heard. I have a 25O MCAT and a 3.47 GPA. I live in CO. Is it safe to say that I'm not being considered at this point? I've been a nurse for 4 years also... What are the stats of people who got interviews?
BossDoc 10-20-2010, 01:16 PM Just curious, how long did it take for your LORs to show up as received on webstar?

Did you call to verify that you are complete? I've heard of things getting misplaced so if not it wouldn't hurt to call.
Also, what does your webstar say? Does it say that you are under review yet?
I just interviewed there last week and my stats are 27M, 3.61cgpa, 4.0sgpa.
Just curious, how long did it take for your LORs to show up as received on webstar?
Well, I already interviewed there and none of my things are showing up as being received on webstar. So I don't think I'd go by that. I went by the emails they sent each time they received something and then called to verify I was complete.
DaisyB814 10-21-2010, 06:54 AM Totally just realized that the post I put up last night was on last year's NSU application thread...no wonder why I hadn't gotten an answer from anyone..lol
I was just wondering about how long did Nova take in offering an interview? I received an email from them on Oct 13 giving me the NSU ID b/c I guess they had just received my new MCAT scores....I had my secondary already completed and by Sept 15 even though they didn't change it's "acceptance" until Oct 11. Do they still invite to interviews without the LOR in? I'm still waiting on my DO letter & my university won't release the letters out until the packet is "complete" aka...I have to wait longer, hopefully by the end of the week or beginning next week. I guess I'm just starting to get really nervous since it's starting to get late into the application cycle.

After submitting the signature page my interview invite came within 1-2 weeks (this was back in September. 3.6c/3.3s, 27R, FL resident). Don't get anxious!
ronaldo23 10-21-2010, 07:58 PM Hi guys...I got invited to that "medical experience day" that has simulations etc. instead of the traditional interview. I didn't send in any LOR's to the school yet though . Do I still need to send them in if I got an interview? Can one, or has one, gotten accepted without sending them? The reason I ask is I hate dealing with my pre-med committee on every level, and if I could bypass them, it would be sweet.

You need to get the letters in so they can make a decision. The LORs aren't required for an interview but they will be asking for them to make a final decision.
USCTrojan11 10-21-2010, 10:00 PM Sitting in my hotel - good luck tmo guys. Waking up in 5 hours. I hate east coast time.

Sweet thanks! Hopefully I guess I should be hearing something within the next week or two (I'll add an extra week in there seeing as how it's late in the cycle lol).
Do you all think that the FL DO schools - LECOM-B and Nova give preference to FL residents when making decisions? Cause that would be pretty sweet....lol I know a lot of undergrad schools do that but I'm not too sure about med schools.
medlove87 10-22-2010, 09:41 AM So I had my interview yesterday...
Apparently I signed up for an 'off' week. Most of the DOs are at the AOA, so our interviews yesterday were one-on-one. The man that interviewed me wasn't the nicest and seemed quite disinterested in the interview process. It really caught me off guard since everyone else had such a great experience. I didn't expect someone to have such a condescending tone with me nor that I would have to defend my post-grad work experience. Be prepared for anything.
The students were pretty helpful and really honest. They're the best source for information and were extremely enthusiastic. Really kept the day upbeat.
Turn around time is about 3 weeks, keeping my fingers crossed.

The NOVA staff specifically said they don't give in-state preference because they are private and not for profit. The tuition is cheaper in state though.

The tuition is cheaper, but not by that much with all things considered. A NOVA PA student I spoke to said that their class is 50/50 FL and other states so I don't know if it's just their PA program or the entire HPD program. It's a lock that there will likely be more FL students in the class than other states though, considering it is in the state and it is cheaper for those students to attend.

I wonder, is FL one of those states and is Nova one of those schools where after a year you can claim residency?

If you go to this website http://medicine.nova.edu/do/admissions/tuition_fees.html
and read the residency application, you will see their policy.
But in short, if you are admitted as an OOS then you remain so for your entire med school education. You have to have moved to Florida a year in advance in order to obtain in state residency. But on the bright side, the costs aren't that much different.

Did they say that it's solely for this week? Or will it continue into next week as well?

From what my interview group was told NOVA has a split of 55% OOS and 45% instate, its close to 50/50 but the slight difference is that the state of Florida gives less money to in-state students, so to compensate they accept a few more out of state students. Im sure youll do great! - After interviews, acceptance is 2 out of every 3 students :)
As for LECOM-B, not sure what there policy is but I remember being one of the few Florida residents in my group lol.

I'm confused. Nova is a private school, so whey would they be getting any money from the state? And if they did, it wouldn't make sense to give less money to students from their own state.
twocentnews 10-23-2010, 10:40 AM They received my Sept scores officially and I got the complete email last week. I know it's getting late, I really love the location and rep of this school though. I hope I hear back sometime soon!!
Congrats to those accepted already as well!

Yeah I was confused by that too, not sure what their logic was but I distinctly remember that being said lol. Unless I got it backwards  Blah! In the end it probably doesnt matter too much lol.

Yes, Nova is a private school. I believe the reasoning behind tuition being slightly cheaper for in-state students has to do with state subsidies to increase the number of physicians (specifically hoping for primary care). At some point, the state of FL chose to slightly subsidize in-state students at Nova as an incentive to get them to stay in their state for medical school and eventually to practice. I remember hearing something about Nova being selected for this subsidy over other FL private medical schools because they produce the most primary care docs %-wise.

It's not just Nova. UM gets money for instate students too which is why they are historically about 70% IS even though they are private. UMs subsidy has been going down though so that preference is moving in the other direction.
aidama 10-25-2010, 10:28 AM Approximately how long did it take from scheduling the interview to receive the e-mail detailing the daily schedule? I'd like to know when I can schedule my flight to leave the same day. :D

That is strange.
Did you get an email confirming your interview? I didn't realize until a couple days later that you have to scroll down all the way to see the schedule + parking pass thingy.
Hope it helps...if not, give em call!
Ditto1114 10-25-2010, 02:17 PM Good Luck Tomorrow!

Nah, I didn't get an e-mail yet (which prompted my post). I think I called them on Friday asking about it, and I vaguely remember them telling me I would get it within a week.... but the extent of what I can remember right now is limited to what's on my exams this week :( Dropped my mind to call today, so I will get on that first thing tomorrow. Thank you!

Btw, anyone coming out here that plans on staying at the Comfort Suites - West. There is a Ruby Tuesday, about a block or so in the opposite direction as the highway, and they have 2 for 1 beer specials between 4 and 6. ;)

Not just 4-6 ;). If your bartender is cool its the whole night...
TommyHawk 10-26-2010, 12:22 PM Before my interview on friday I was able to log into webstar and check my application status. Since my interview, I haven't been able to log onto webstar. Today I called and they reset my pin, but now when I log on I get an error message:
"This page is not enabled for current user role(s). twbkwbis.P_FirstMenu"
Is anyone else having trouble logging on or is it just me?
DrHuman 10-26-2010, 12:44 PM Has anyone from the Oct 7th interview crew heard anything at all? I got an e-mail from a woman last Wednesday saying we'd hear "hopefully by next week." I guess that means hopefully by the end of this week.
Sigh. I want this uncertainty to END!
Been checking webstar like a crazy person.
MightyMoose 10-26-2010, 12:51 PM Not just 4-6 ;). If your bartender is cool its the whole night...
Haha. Nice! I wanted to try to be slightly responsible, so I cut myself off after 2, but if you're staying the night after your interview, that could be dangerous...

Fellow 10/7 interviewee as well and have heard nothing. I interviewed at AZCOM last Wed and heard back from them the following day! lol, what is taking NSU so long? :thumbdown
DrHuman 10-26-2010, 03:01 PM AutumnChild- How'd you like AZCOM? I didn't end up applying there, but heard it struggles with the same issue that many DO schools do- rotations. Nova is so high on my list in large part because they've got some killer rotations spots. I interviewed at LECOM and while I couldn't have cared much less for the administrative culture of the school, it was a pretty impressive place, save the total lack of support in the rotations process.

Were you part of the medical school experience program?

I actually liked the school a lot more than I thought I would. They have amazing COMLEX numbers (like in the 97-99% range) and great facilities. I'm not too sure about their rotation site struggles. I think their rotation sites are pretty established and the issues are just how students are placed at the different sites. I didn't apply to any of the LECOMs, but from what I've heard I definitely don't regret not applying lol.
jd1031 10-26-2010, 05:24 PM Accepted!!! Interviewed 10/12
Longshanks 10-26-2010, 06:00 PM Congrats, jd!
Swill175 10-26-2010, 06:36 PM Interviewed today - great experience & great school. It has always been my top choice & today certainly solidified my opinion. Very relaxed interview so don't be nervous. Our group was only about 10 people so it was great, they said it's usually about 15-20. They said it'd take ~3 weeks for a decision...hopefully that's cut down & is really about 2 weeks lol.
Swill175 10-26-2010, 06:38 PM Accepted!!! Interviewed 10/12

Thanks!

hey! I must have seen you since we interviewed the same day! Congrats!
Salad1n 10-27-2010, 01:26 PM For some reason, they've had problems with my application. I sent my secondary and letters in September but I called and they put the letters under someone else with the same last name. Then they didn't download my August MCAT which I sent with my primary so they rejected me based on my old MCAT. It seems they got things in order now and are reviewing but now I'm way behind. Haven't had these problems with any other school so it's kind of left me with a bad impression of them. Kind of feels like I wasted the fee.
seap3 10-27-2010, 02:45 PM Accepted! Interviewed 10/14. Anyone else from that day hear anything?
I was there 10/14, but no email for me. :(
My webstar still says "invited for interview" though, so I guess that's better than "denied" or whatever they say when you're rejected.
AutumnChild 10-27-2010, 03:09 PM After some thought, I'm pretty sure I'll be withdrawing my NSU acceptance. I hope my seat goes to one of you. Good luck!
P.S. Does anyone know how I go about doing this? Do I just shoot an e-mail to Ellen?

I wouldn't worry about it too much yet, it was a much faster turnaround time than I was expecting so hopefully yours comes soon!
hey! I must have seen you since we interviewed the same day! Congrats!
Congrats to you too! Think you'll end up going to Nova? With the weather I'm having up north right now, Florida is sounding better and better every day.
LeapofFaith 10-27-2010, 07:14 PM I was under the impression the notification would come via phone call and be mailed out the same day.
My heart skipped a beat when I received an email titled, "NSU COM Decision" because I had a fleeting thought of not being accepted, but when I opened the email it read, "Congratulations..."
Someone created a Facebook group for NSU-COM class of 2015!

My heart skipped a beat when I received an email titled, "NSU COM Decision" because I had a fleeting thought of not being accepted, but when I opened the email it read, "Congratulations..."
Someone created a Facebook group for NSU-COM class of 2015!

Congratulations to those who have been accepted, and good luck in your future endeavors to those who are less fortunate this time around.
Congratulations to you you, too! Do you think you'll end up going?
PsychDO 10-27-2010, 07:37 PM I wouldn't worry about it too much yet, it was a much faster turnaround time than I was expecting so hopefully yours comes soon!
Congrats to you too! Think you'll end up going to Nova? With the weather I'm having up north right now, Florida is sounding better and better every day.
Tell me about it! Its been raining/snowing for a straight week and I'm over the gray weather!
I still have some interviews, so I'm not sure what my final decision will be. I was very impressed by Nova, though (especially the awesome mustache the dean rocked!). What about you?
LeapofFaith 10-27-2010, 07:56 PM Thank you. I am definitely going. I staggered my applications submitting NSU-COM first so I wouldn't have to fly around the country for interviews to other schools if it worked out. NSU-COM is my first choice. No more stress.
I'm excited. I'm relieved. I'm relaxed. I plan to do a lot of relaxing, fishing, and tennis until school starts. This may be the last chance I get to be carefree while enjoying a Florida "winter" for many, many years...
I am considering getting a head start on the MPH, but I am leaning against it...

For those that had an interview here I was wondering if anyone remembered what they said on the interview day about med students also going for the MPH. Sounded like a lot of people did it but I dont remember if you have to apply to it seperatly and how much extra coursework it would add to your schedule. Anyone remember? I was too nervous anticipating my interview to pay to close attention!

I think taking some time off and enjoying your free time sounds like a great plan! Starting the MPH might end up leaving you stressed before you start med school, and that could make your first year really un-fun.
I'm really happy for you- getting into your top choice must feel incredible! You are officially DONE with the waiting game!

They said you can apply for the program in your second semester of first year and you can take the classes you can handle. If you can't finish the MPH in the first 2 years, you can take online classes while you are doing your rotations so you can finish in the four years of med school (I got mixed numbers on this, but 20-60 seem to do that per class). If you can't finish the MPH during your 4 years, you can finish it online during your residency. I'm guessing not many people get much of this done their intern year, so now you're talking about PGY-2 to finish. It sounds like it's in your best interests, and possible, to do it during the four years.
Oh, and Congrats to everyone with acceptances!!! It's a great program and the Florida sunshine doesn't sound too shabby either.
AutumnChild 10-27-2010, 09:55 PM May I ask what makes you withdraw from Nova? And all the best with anywhere you decide to go to. :)
Well, part of it is what current students say when they explain why they chose a school. I just wasn't feeling Nova on top of other things like the dress code, attendance, 80hrs mandatory community service, and conv. & med spanish. Their comlex scores are also lower than all the other schools i've been accepted to. I'm not trying to bash on Nova because it is a great school, but It just isn't for me.

Thanks for the info! With the ability to finish it up online, no wonder so many students go for it. I'll probably look into it!
DrHuman 10-27-2010, 10:19 PM Yo! Anyone else from Oct 7th accepted? I just got it today, and couldn't be happier. To those who aren't into the community service, med Spanish, and rural rotations requirements, you're definitely better off elsewhere. I couldn't agree MORE with the school's (read: Dean Silvagni's) philosophy, and am excited to fulfill all of those req's, and more. No school is perfect, and NSU certainly is no exception, but with the exception of basically one other school (i.e. my state school = crazy cheap) I'm unlikely to go elsewhere.
Holler,
The bald philosophy guy from up north.
:)
PurplePandaPJs 10-28-2010, 07:01 AM I've been looking into their MPH program too. I believe you can do all of the courses online since there is that option. With 4 years to spread out all of the courses I feel like it is totally do able.
Congrats to all the recent acceptances! :)

I don't know for sure yet but I was very impressed by the campus and philosophy of the school (and the moustache). I'm going to keep interviewing but I'm predicting some Florida sunshine in my future.
aidama 10-28-2010, 11:28 AM So I won't receive the confirmation email until later in November, since my interview isn't until December 7th. but got the right information so now I can make my flights!

My only concern is that it is pretty expensive in terms of cost of living. Are you just planning on taking out enough loans to cover it all? Also on the downside, there are no mountains. No mountains at all!! ...I guess I might just have to take up surfing or scuba diving :-)

I've grown up in NYC and went to school in Miami so I have always experienced a "high" cost of living. But how much different is it really in other parts of the country? The only thing that I've really heard was rent was a little cheaper and beer and drinks were cheaper. What else is different?
StayOnTop 10-29-2010, 10:02 AM Can't you just live on campus? They have housing, don't they, or is it still expensive?

I had to do a double take when I saw the cost of living sheet. But, I think they just let you borrow a lot more than you need. Rent there seemed relatively cheap, compared to any city. It looked like rent was $600-700 for a 1br in Davie, the tuition/fees are on the low end for IS and in the middle for OOS, and while Miami is an expensive city, Ft Laudy/Davie aren't too bad. You probably do want access to a car, at least for rotations, as public transportation is weak, but apart from that, I think you'd really have to try to spend $70k (leaving 11k after subtracting tuition, fees, rent) a year, let alone the $80 they let you borrow.
edit: Rent looks a bit higher. $700-1000 depending on location for a 1 br. And on campus housing looks like grand larceny :)
$14-15k for a year. http://www.nova.edu/publications/housing_packet/index.html
PolskiPreMed 10-29-2010, 12:34 PM Jeez, no love from Nova! WTH?! I live a few miles from here and have other DO invites, not to mention I shadowed (and got an exceptional letter) a DO who graduated from here and has Nova students come through his office.
How long did it take most people to receive invites after the complete email?
IS, 28S, 3.93 sgpa, 3.95 ao
Thanks!
I'm in the same position with similar credentials... Have you heard anything/received an interview yet? Has anyone received an interview invite recently? I'm starting to go bananas.

I have interviews coming up at both schools and am just curious about what people think about the pros and cons. Obviously depends on the person, but I would love to hear your impressions. Thanks.

@Polski, I have similar credentials too (slightly higher mcat, slightly lower gpa) and just was offered an interview at nova last week. It took them quite a while to invite me so I had kind of written this school off, so I wouldn't give up hope - when were you complete?

I guess I just live in a super-cheap area. I am used to paying about $500 for a huge two bedroom apartment, so there is a little bit of sticker-shock for me.
thanks for the reality check, though! I'm really excited about Nova.

Yeah, it seems pretty expensive but as far as I can tell it's overestimated to allow for more loans. If I go to Nova I don't think I'll take out the full amount but I'd rather take out a little more than I need instead of too little.

Yeah, rent is definitely cheaper where I'm from. I'm sharing a 2-br right now for about $500 apiece. Also I have a friend who moved to Ft. Lauderdale from near me, and he said groceries are more expensive too. A trip that would be $50-60 up here is closer to $75-80 in Ft. Lauderdale.
DrHuman 10-29-2010, 04:37 PM I'm not sure where many of these numbers are coming from- why all the "my friend said X" nonsense on SDN? It never stops.
Search around craigslist for the Ft. Lauderdale area and you'll be happily surprised. For example....
http://miami.craigslist.org/search/apa?query=ft.+lauderdale&srchType=A&minAsk=1000&maxAsk=1500&bedrooms=2
Sorry to hear of some people being turned off by the community service requirements and med Spanish requirements, but if you ain't in it to help others and step outside your comfort zone... I guess don't go to NSU.
USCTrojan11 10-29-2010, 07:17 PM Anyone from the Medical School Experience Program hear back yet?

interviewed @ LECOM-B on Monday & was accepted Friday. I also interviewed @ NSU-COM on Tuesday. I'm confident that I'll be accepted @ NSU & if that's the case I will attend NSU. Both interviews are very laid back - however I felt NSU's was a bit more personal bc they knew my file better. Both campuses are exceptional, however, the Bradenton area is a bit mundane. I'm about 10 mins from NSU so I know the area & know it's much more vibrant. As far as curriculum, you really have to sit in on the 2hr PBL section to see if it's for you. Personally, I think it's fine - but I'd rather a traditional lecture. LECOM's interview day felt like it went on forever, NSU's flew by. My interview group @ NSU was only 10 people so we had more interaction with our AMAZING tour guides that genuinely laid things out for us & explained a lot. LECOM guides seemed liked they just wanted to leave (aside from 2 people that were helpful). But, that is just trivial.. It's just chance that we got good tour guides @ NSU. Overall, I think NSU is a better fit for me. They both preach for the interviewers to figure out if their school is right for them. While @ each school make sure you can picture yourself there for some tough years lol. Good luck on your interview, pm me if you have any more qs.

Still waiting...It's amazing to me that I haven't heard back because while I have a whatever MCAT, my other stats and background are great! BUT, I called Nova Thursday and turns out they only had my old MCAT score, not the newer higher one. So if anyone out there hasn't heard anything and retook the MCAT you may want to look into it. The lady said she was going to put me in for review, not sure if I had already gone through or was still in a waiting pile. My status has been "Decision Pending" forever.
Oh well, I have 4 other interviews so I guess only time will tell if Nova shows me some love.

It would definitely be nice to have a car, so if you can afford it, go for it. If not, there isn't much to do right next to the hotel. There's a grocery store and some chain restaurants that are a 5 minute walk from the hotel, but that's pretty much it.

Thanks, dogster. And congrats on the interview! I submitted my secondary on the 27th of August, but they didn't have my most recent MCAT so I got the "your application has been sent to the AdComm for review" until 10/4. I also didn't have my physician LOR in for a while after that... but apparently that doesn't matter? If you don't mind me asking, how long after receiving the email saying its under review did it take for your interview invite?

Honestly, I'm not totally sure - I had a similar issue with items missing from my file, so I spent a lot of time on the phone with them sorting it out. I actually ended up getting my interview invite over the phone (because I called to check on things), so you might consider checking in with them. I was pretty frustrated with how the adcom handled things, but I've heard positive things about the school so I'm going to stick it out and see how things go at the interview.

Guys, yeah the NSU figures are definitely overestimated. They said that they do this so that we have additional flexibility for random circumstances. If anything, this shows that they're looking out for our interests instead of another school that may underestimate the cost of living to appear more competitive.
I'm looking at just the tuition numbers to make my decision. If an area is more expensive, there's probably a good reason - like a higher quality of life.
DrHuman 10-30-2010, 08:36 PM Can anybody on here speak to how they felt NOVA and LECOM-Bradenton compare? I'm from the southeast and am looking pretty strongly at Florida schools. I interviewed at both as well, and spent the rest of the week after LECOM convincing myself that if that's the only place I got in, I could be happy there. I'm sure I could, but I got about the driest of dry vibes. I'm not sure what people are referencing when they say "campus"- let's call it what it is- it's a giant office building with more rules than a sixth grade classroom. Those little things are trivial, though, when you spend only a few hours in the building a day (as one student told me). LECOM was only using four prosected cadavers for the whole crew, which kids were not unhappy with, but I'm psyched to get down and dirty with cadavers in dissection (that NSU has, and MAN do they have a lot of dead folks in that big lab!).
The PBL session was super cool, but after talking with kids at NSU, it seems to be just a better structured version of **** you're going to do anyway at most other schools. If that really gets you off, then definitely go for it, but there seems to be little other guidance at LECOM- especially when it comes to rotations. I thrive with more structure academically, so NSU seemed better here as well.
I did really like most of the students I met, and they all did seem generally happy, so that's obviously a big plus. The dean hammered us with "it's way more work than you've ever done! You may not make it" vibes, which was a bit odd. Other than that he was a very pleasant man.
NSU was totally different. Giant actual campus (great gym/student center, multiple libraries where one can drink coffee and study simultaneously, CLINICS attached to the health sciences buildings, etc), the dean's philosophy was awesome and unpretentious despite the fact that he chairs the committee that orchestrates work between all seven FL med schools... They have a free (part of your tuition) Kaplan board review course through the second year, multiple fellowships, organizations, the list goes on. It's an awesome place, and even though I live in Boston, doctors up here know Nova and are super psyched for me.
So, personally, there isn't a question in my mind.
traitorman 10-31-2010, 07:37 AM Yep, that's it.

hey thx guys, I'll definitely be staying there then. I'm probably gonna have to use the shuttle since I'll be getting in really late anyway. So according to the email, the interview day is from 8:45AM-2PM. Were you guys done with the entire interview day by 2? Just trying to determine if I should book a 4:45PM flight from ft. lauderdale or a 7:05PM one.
and in regards to the shuttle, do you call them or they come at certain points every hour or so? I'll call to make sure, but just wanted to see what your experience with it was. I'm probably gonna have to use one when I arrive at the airport at like midnight.

No problem at all. In regards to the flight time, there was 2 guys that stayed at Comfort Suite with us that day (we had a total of 4 who interviewed for DO and a few interviewed for dental I think) who both had flight departing at 4PM. So I would say yeah it is possible, just cutting a little close but definitely doable. The plus side is the hotel is really close to the airport (~10 minutes drive) and the staff is familiar with students coming to interview so they will be ready to take you to the airport right after picking you back from school. Just let the staff know ahead of time that you need shuttle to airport.
About picking up at the airport business, right after you land, give them a call. They will instruct you exactly where to go to wait for them and they usually take 15-20 minutes to pick you up. However, since you will reach very late (you said midnight), I think it will be good to give them a call earlier that day to let them know about your late flight and that you will need to be picked up so they can schedule.

You hit the nail on the head! I have no clue why I called LECOM a campus, silly me! You're right, they were very dry there but @ NSU everyone seemed so much more... Alive. I guess it's bc their are SO many other people just in the HPD building. To compare LECOM's office building to NSU's HPD building (not the campus as a whole): LECOM barely had students walking the halls & conversating whereas NSU has hundreds of kids from the different health colleges all co-mingling whether it be in the hallway, the starbucks, or in the OMM lab. Just based on that alone, I know NSU is better for me... You can tell that everyone wants everyone to do great.
I, too, prefer that structured learning NSU offers. Although PBL was interesting, I hate the fact that the facilitator may only be an authority in one subject.. You have to seek the answers to your questions - which may not be good all the time. The students @ NSU really praised the professors bc they are always open to helping.
I'm from S. Fl so this area holds my heart, if you're not looking to volunteer in the area & help the under-served you're better off elsewhere as they really push for comm service.
I can go on, but typing this on my phone is quite annoying lol.
In the end: NSU pwns LECOM-B. Of course, that is my opinion & one needs to figure that out for his/herself. :)

traitorman 10-31-2010, 09:39 AM No problem at all.
However, since you will reach very late (you said midnight), I think it will be good to give them a call earlier that day to let them know about your late flight and that you will need to be picked up so they can schedule.
thx again mdang, so it sounds like the interview goes way past two but if they were able to make a 4PM flight, i guess 4:45 shouldnt be too bad. i called the hotel and apparently there is a shuttle service from the airport that runs from 6am to midnight so ill have to try and make that time. otherwise, a cab ride cant be that bad if the hotel is that close.
oh and congrats on your acceptance! ill be looking forward to this interview. i just wish i had more time to stay in the area

On my interview day, the day actually ends around 1:45ish so you should be fine. I too wish I could have had some extra time to spend in Florida but I had to work the very next day so oh well, I will be making up for that when I matriculate next year :D
As others have mentioned, the interview was very relaxing. Mostly conversations between me and the two interviewers (who both are NSU professors). We spent like 10 minutes talking about football so it was great :). The facility was very impressive. They have SOLID rotations (the best so far that I see besides CCOM).
:luck: to you. I hope you'll have great experience at NSU as I did.

They won't win it this year, despite the hype, but hey, at least you'll be close enough to see Magic take the championship for Orlando! :D
MightyMoose 11-01-2010, 08:21 AM hey guys i have my interview on nov 4th. it seems a lot of people recommend the comfort suites. i just want to make sure im booking the right one. is it the Comfort Suites Ft. Lauderdale Airport West – Davie (http://www.comfortsuites.com/ires/en-US/html/ArrivalInfo?hotel=FL591&clientid=SKq4HhZrsOC0)
2540 Davie Road, Davie, FL 33317?
And I was thinking of using the shuttle but are there a lot of places walking distance from this hotel? otherwise maybe ill get a car
I rented a car, but would not recommend doing that unless you are going to be there for a couple of days. The shuttle will take you and should pick you up from the airport. It is also easier to take the shuttle to the interview than it is to drive yourself (at least that is my take). As Sinfest pointed out, there are some chain restaurants close to the hotel. You're best bet is the Ruby Tuesday's about 2-3 blocks from the hotel, which has some pretty good drink specials.
Good luck at your interview!

I think the 4:45 will be more stressful, but you can make it. After almost missing one flight after an interview I like to try to give myself extra time, but our day was definitely over by 2. It took about 15 minutes for the shuttle to arrive (we had to call when we were done), and then about 15 minutes to change at the hotel, then 15 minutes to get to the airport, etc.. So in a perfect world, you should be at the airport no later than 3.

our inteview ran late because we ended up chatting with the dean for a long time. our group was on the bigger side, at least 16 ppl. we didn't get out until around 3pm.
SFO-IST 11-01-2010, 09:01 AM To everyone interviewing:
I wanted to offer a tip on the hotels. I stayed at the Hyatt Regency Bonaventure Resort. I found a really cheap rate (~$15 more than the cheapest hotel) on expedia, travelocity, orbitz - I think if they are not having a conference, the rate is discounted. I'd highly recommend staying there. The rooms are HUGE and incredibly high end. The bathrooms are all marble, etc. The breakfast is an all you can eat buffet of whatever you can imagine - even smoked salmon. It will give you that added comfort the night before the interview.
Another tip: reserve a full size if renting a car. If using a discount from your bank/credit card (USAA), the difference is only 5-10 dollars per day. Not only does this give you added flexibility on what type of model you can choose (you can always downgrade to a subcompact if there is a good model available), but sometimes there are no full sizes left and you get an automatic upgrade to a highly desirable car. I used this tactic at Avis and got upgraded into a new Mustang Convertible for my week in sunny FL!
Final tip: take a look at the NSU website for the videos showing interview tips. I found them to be extremely helpful.
PS: Kick some butt!

Good points, but also don't forget when booking hotels that most schools, including NSU, have discounted prices at the hotels, so oftentimes it's cheaper to book just the flight or flight and car on orbitz/expedia then book the hotel online or over the phone at the discounted rate.
The car story is soooooo true. I am 6'3" and got stuck in a smart car when I was in Vegas a few weeks ago... Talk about a comedic sight. I was just too cheap to upgrade and didn't really realize what a smart car was until I saw it... Then I thought there was a hidden camera somewhere and I was about to get Punk'd. haha.

Does anyone know how the shuttle works ? Do i need to call them and ask them to pick me up ?
I wonder how full the class is at this point? Seems like a lot of people got in. Whats the class size?
Thanks
seap3 11-01-2010, 10:26 AM I stayed at the Sheraton right on the beach. I bid on Priceline for a 3 star on the beach for $59 and they accepted. I was staying for 4 days, so it was great being right on the beach. The only downside was the taxi to nsu was $40 each way and the food was expensive, but the ocean was beautiful and they actually gave me a corner room with a great view.
I didn't rent a car, but I did spend one day on the water taxi. It was only $15 for an all day pass. I kind of wish I had gotten a car though so I could have done a bit more exploring, especially around Davie.

Thats what I did, but others brought their stuff to Nova and they put their stuff in a separate room. That way they could go straight from Nova to the airport.

Yeah, I did the same thing. They give you a bag tag and just store it in the office for you.
I think that was probably a good idea with the flight. It is nice knowing you have plenty of time to get to the airport without having to stress.
The interview is very low stress and laid back. Just sit back and enjoy the ride. ;)

You won't. I assure you.
What kind of research opportunities are available for NSU-COM students? I am having difficulty finding professors who conduct research or something similar on the website.
Nova is a big university with dental, optometry and pharmacy schools. So, I am sure there must be lots of research opportunities compared to the smaller "stand alone" osteopathic medical schools.

I don't know any specifics, but I asked this same question at the end of my interview. I was told that while you are not required to perform any research, they are very accommodating in setting up research projects on topics of interest for students. Beyond that, I'm not sure.

I would definitely stay at the Sheraton again if I could afford it. The rooms are regularly $149/night, plus $17 for parking, so I feel pretty lucky that I got it so cheap. I really liked how it was right on the beach and not across Seabreeze Blvd like most of the other hotels. They have a beachside pool and bar that was really nice. One of the stops for the water taxi is right across the street, as well as a bunch of places for boat & waterski rentals.
As for something not to do - don't get one of those giant margaritas on Seabreeze blvd. I can't remember what the name of the place was, but I definitely regretted it later.
ScarletKnights 11-03-2010, 08:21 AM So i submitted my secondary end of September and i have been under review since then. I am wondering if this means my chances are slim to getting in or does the process at NSU always take this long for everyone?
PsychDO 11-03-2010, 08:51 AM what is the interview format here? is it one on one?
It is two faculty members and you for a 20-30 minute interview. On my interview day, there was one interviewer who was doing his interviews one on one, since his interview partner was out of town.
seap3 11-03-2010, 03:02 PM Has anybody received a waitlist or rejection post interview yet? I don't think I've seen anybody post about this, so I was wondering how they handle it.

I ended up doing the same thing. I turned my FL trip into a mini vacation... but then got a little too liberal with the mixed drinks at the beachfront palapa right by the hotel... :o
I transferred hotels the night before my interview though to reduce AM stress though... It was easy enough with a rental car.

I ended up staying two days after my interview too since I was staying with a friend that works for the dolphins. Sounds like the beach was a good time, but I found that a DD is pretty important closer to the school. I did see that shark bus swing by a bar but I'm betting that if you don't live in student housing it is less than convenient. These things will of course be of little concern to students.

I would say that I enjoyed the area enough to look forward to the possibility of living there but not to the point that I imagine there being much in the way of distractions. A good term to sum up my experience of the school and area would be "pleasant."

Bah, you'll be fine.
Plus, rejections only hurt until you get your first acceptance. Then it's more like, "WTF is that schools problem? Why don't they want my sexy ass filling one of their seats? ;)
traitorman 11-05-2010, 12:13 AM so i interviewed yesterday and wow...i LOVE NSU. everything from the hybrid curriculum to the rotations. the facilities were awesome, the people were cool, and the place felt so lively with all the other health professional students on campus. it felt like a more mature college atmosphere. the school is a bit pricey but i think its worth it with everything the school has to offer
i really really hope i get accepted but unfortunately, I'm most likely gonna get a waitlist/rejection :scared:. my interviewers were really nice and not trying to stress me out at all, and all the questions they asked were the standard questions. but i ended up rambling for some reason and i dont think it looked too good. plus, we had a really cool interview group that day so its gonna be tough to compete with you all!
good luck to everybody, im just gonna accept that i got waitlisted/rejected because I don't wanna get my hopes up.
for everyone that interviewed earlier, how long did it take for you guys to hear back??

No, I won't. There were some things I really liked about Nova, but others I wasn't 100% sure about. They seemed to a little bit less non-trad/family friendly than the other schools. I did like that they seemed to have solid rotations for yrs 3/4 though. I don't think they liked that I wasn't doing a lot of community service. But honestly, I do have to put my current schooling and family ahead of a lot of volunteering.
Congrats to everyone else that got acceptances!

I know DMU is an awesome school. You're still gonna get to be a doc, and honestly that's all that really matters at this stage in the game.

I'm sorry to hear about that. :( I don't think it matters how many acceptances you have, WL's still sting. I ended up with one from DMU, and even though I wasn't sure if I was going to attend or not, it still stung. You're sitting on some nice acceptances and won't have any problem getting your family to fit in at DMU. They seemed very family friendly as well. ;)

Who were you? I'm the Canadian. Guess they do still accept us after all :D
DocTraveler 11-06-2010, 03:15 PM Seriously I do not understand how I have not been invited to an interview here...I'm a Floridian, tons of volunteering, great ECs, great GPA, above Nova MCAT average, a LOR from a very well connected Nova alum....and no word. This process is seriously so strange; I thought DO schools would show me more love than MD, but that hasn't been the case.
Sitting and waiting :p
barnold 11-06-2010, 03:18 PM Congrats to all those accepted! I just interviewed and loved the school!!! Does anyone know about how many people they interview, or the acceptance rate for those interviewed? I know the online video said 50%, but I was just wondering if anyone had heard something directly from admissions.
Thanks!
Hey iamabanana, I think I know who you were. The light blue shiny tie right?
I had on the dark blue tie with a off white shirt.
You think youll end up going? Honestly Nova looked like a vacation destination when we were there, I loved it.

Hey! Congratulations, man! I was the guy who was chatting with you about how people on SDN talk about how they don't let Canadians into US DO schools. haha. I guess they were wrong. ;) Now you just need to fork over 4 years of tuition... :wow:

Dude, this process is soooo strange. You shouldn't sweat it. I think Nova just sent out a big batch of invites early on and will most likely send another by mid December, is my guess. I haven't seen anyone get a new invite in quite a while.

Samezies, DocTraveler... except I don't have much connection to Nova alum besides my mom who got her Masters in education there like 20 years ago. Oh well. But like people are saying, I haven't heard of any recent interview invites for a while so who knows. Just try and stay positive.

Yeah, those deposits are brutal! I actually think I'm going to put my deposit down at another school. I liked Nova quite a bit, but I just feel that other school is a better fit for me.
the exorcist 11-07-2010, 06:50 PM I really like NSU and wonder if anyone can tell me if it is worth me applying there...
non-traditional student, 3.3 undergrad GPA due to bad freshman year (15 years ago!!)
15 years Paramedic experience for a major city EMS
34P on the MCAT
15 credits of Post-bac with a 3.7 GPA Microbiology
Anything that could make my application stronger??

I think you'd be in great shape. I'm not too sure if applying this year may be too late or not, but if we're talking strictly numbers, I was accepted with nearly identical stats but that was early in the cycle. So here's my take on your situation:
Your MCAT score is great. Congrats on a job well done. Don't sweat the 3.3 too much. You're not the first to have a poor freshman year and get accepted to medical school. Its great that you have so much experience as a paramedic - it demonstrates your commitment to health care and indicates that you have an understanding of how the field works. Going back for a post-bacc definitely helps you in applying, no matter what school that is, and having a strong GPA from it. For the post-bacc to be more beneficial to you, I'd suggest doing another semester worth of credits. For AACOMAS that should get you up to around 3.4 or better (if you continue with 3.7+ in your post-bacc) and its further indication that you can achieve scholastically and be able to handle the academic rigors of medical school. IMHO, NSU, and DO schools in general, appreciate non-trads and those with extensive health care experience. That should bode well for you. The only concern is how late in the cycle it is beginning to get. Have you submitted AACOMAS yet? If you have, and you're simply debating whether to add NSU, then it depends how deep they are into interviewing applicants. Maybe someone here who's recently receive an invite can say what their date was. Not that anything is a 100% certainty, but if you applied early in the next cycle, I'm positive you would get accepted from a number of schools. If NSU is your #1 and your dead set on it though, and don't want to waste another year, then nows the time and apply ASAP. Its getting later in the game, but if you get everything in to NSU quickly and are complete, I think you are a competitive applicant.
Good luck and best of wishes!
gambit378 11-07-2010, 10:55 PM hey everyone! I am a current M1 at NSU and I hope that the application process isn't driving you too crazy. We just finished our 2nd cycle of test chaos and I finally have a few days to breathe, sleep, and have a few (many) beers. I want to say congrats to everyone that has been admitted so far! A good deal of the people I gave tours to have gotten in and I hope to see you all next year. Take this time to relax before the chaos of med school studying begins. If you are waiting to hear back don't be afraid to call the office and let them know you are still interested - just be friendly!
If anyone has any questions about the school, living situations down here, what to expect, or any other random nonsense shoot me a message! Good luck on the whole application process; i know it is a pain but it is so worth it!

+1.
As a fellow Non-trad, I agree with all that is said here. We are lucky to have a system (AACOMAS) that recognizes that people might not have committed to medicine at the end of high school. I am completely convinced that we will become better physicians because of it and this farsightedness is one reason why I will be proud to soon call myself a student DO. Don't worry, apply this cycle and next cycle if you have to. One way or the other, it will work out.
Oh one more piece of advice: if 15 credits are barely a year's worth of classes, take another half year. You should have at least one year in your postbac.
the exorcist 11-08-2010, 07:17 AM Thank you all for your replies! I think since it is so late in the cycle, I am going to apply next year very early to maximize my chances and minimize how much money I spend on the application process! I also liked the fact that the DO schools seem to care more about work experience from what people tell me and a couple of great docs that I have worked with are DO's.
I'm taking my post-bac classes part time since I work full time, so I can take a few more. I could possibly have 30 credits by the time I would start med school if I apply next year, so I hope that would strengthen my application.
Thanks again, and good luck to all in your studies!

I just got accepted with a 3.2 uGPA and a 32R MCAT. Your stats are better than mine so you probably have a pretty solid shot.

I don't need to submit anything to them to hold my acceptance right? Beyond the deposit due December 14?

Thanks,

I'm pretty sure the deadline for deposit is Dec 14th. Other than that, I don't think we need to do anything else. We will have to submit the technical standard and official transcript but that's later. Someone please corrects me if I am wrong :)

That's my impression also. I've been accepted since end of September and haven't sent anything back yet. I plan on sending in the deposit and letter of intent probably first week of December and just send in the transcripts also (might as well).
sbz214 11-09-2010, 09:53 AM I have also been accepted since September. I sent in the letter of intent without the deposit just so that they would be aware that I planned to attend and that they could expect my deposit later.

Do we have to send in the letter of intent right away? I think we could wait till dec 14

dlouis 11-09-2010, 10:30 AM Gosh I'm so late in the cycle. I just got everything submitted minus my committee letter so far. I received that e-mail either when they received my primary or secondary. You shouldn't fill out FAFSA until after New Year's anyway. Sadly, even with an acceptance offer, you won't find out much about financial aid anyway until later since the deposit it due earlier than any of that will occur.
DoctorGC 11-09-2010, 01:26 PM Yeah, I sent in my deposit, intent to enroll, and technical standars from about 2 weeks ago. They received everything. I also sent in the Residency Application you need to fill out to prove you are a Florida resident. Did anyone else fill that out/send that in yet?

The interview is you and two interviewers. They will either be clinicians or other faculty members. Mine was a retired FM doc and a physical therapist.
DaisyB814 11-10-2010, 09:56 AM So no wonder why I haven't heard anything from Nova in like a month...they don't even have my MCAT scores from September! I called them a MONTH ago to verify that they got my score, and got the email with my NSU ID right after my MCAT scores were "received." I called again today since it's been awhile and "mysteriously" they don't have my score even though I authorized AACOMAS to release my score the same day I found out what I got.
Anybody else had this sort of problem with Nova?
mes415 11-10-2010, 11:15 AM Anyone know if nova responds to in the area emails for interviews?
MedIsInMyBlood 11-10-2010, 01:06 PM Hello all. I just looked at stats from the US News Guide to Medical Schools (the new one) and it appears that if you have an interview at NSU, you are very likely to get accepted !
Apparently last year 2651 total students applied, 508 out of those got interviews, and 458 out of those were accepted ! 458 out of 508 is a very high percentage (90.1%) ! (Most schools have around a 40% interview acceptance rate). So, it seems they screen very hard before the interview and only choose to interview those people who they really believe are good candidates.
Longshanks 11-10-2010, 02:54 PM So no wonder why I haven't heard anything from Nova in like a month...they don't even have my MCAT scores from September!
Things like this have happened in last year's thread. Be diligent and make sure they have everything in order with you.
turkaglew 11-10-2010, 03:04 PM Does anyone know how NSU determines where you do your clinical rotattions? Is it easyto stay in the Ft. Lauderdale/Miami area all 4 years without having to move? Do they make exceptions for those with families if not?

Oh trust me, I immediately called/emailed AACOMAS to verify everything - they quickly responded back that the scores were indeed sent to Nova on 10/12....soooo tomorrow someone at Nova is going to get a "polite" earfull as to why my file wasn't properly downloaded :meanie: I even went as far as calling ALLLL of my other schools that I've applied at to make sure they got my score - they all did on the 12th, minus Nova...:smack:

Yup. If you trust US NEWS then that is what the numbers are.
It certainly was exciting to hear for me, as I have heard great things about NOVA and would love to attend school there.

from what i have heard from M3s is that there are basically two lotteries: one for Broward county/Miami area, and another for sites in other parts of the country. you get to choose which to be apart of. last year it was pretty easy to get assigned into the Broward area (the main hospital is Broward County). keep in mind that we do have to conduct a rural rotation no matter what lottery you choose. hope this helps

heroes31 11-11-2010, 11:16 AM what is the letter of intent? - the packet only seems to mention deposit, technical standards, and transcripts..?
My acceptance letter says "you must return the enclosed letter of intent confirming your desire to have a place reserved for you along with an acceptance fee of $1250 by December 14, 2010." Included in the packet is a separate letter where you can either indicate that you accept or decline the offer.

There is one lottery, that lottery is for rotations in the state of florida. There are a lot of core rotation sites in south florida, a few are outside of it, such as orlando, naples, largo. Most people will remain in south florida, some won't by either choice or bad lottery luck. We submit a list ranking all of the florida core rotation sites, get assigned a lottery number and are placed accordingly. All of your 3rd year rotations and your 4th year ER rotation will be done at the core site assigned to you in the lottery. There is an opportunity to swap your placement with other students, also to appeal the lottery result. If you have kids enrolled in school or a spouse with a job who needs to be in the area, they will work with you. As they put it they aren't in the business of breaking up families.
There are core sites in Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and New York. If you want to go out of state you tell them where you want to go and that is where you go, you don't take part in the lottery. No one is made to go out of state.
4th year aside from your ER and rural rotation, it is completely elective, you choose where and what you want to rotate through.

For the rural rotation is it possible to do it somewhere near the Miami/FLL area or at least somewhere where I could drive back and forth? I ask because I have a wife and she will most likely work in the miami area so it will be hard to just move for 3 months.

They're actually rurual/underserved rotations and there are three of them. If I am correct that means you can do it in inner-city type situations. What I'm not sure of is how those are defined or if there are any in Miami.

Only the third one has this option. The first two must be rural - at least that's how it was presented at my interview day. The third one can be elsewhere, so long as it is deemed underserved, so people have gone to Cook County or St. Barnabas in the Bronx before they told us.

I don't know how they choose where your rural rotation is or if we get to choose, but they told us the closest one to the school in davie was 45 minutes away. They did mention underserved urban areas count.
Salad1n 11-11-2010, 09:01 PM They put me in the rejection pile after messing up my application.
29N; 3.7 sGPA
Messed up my letters first, which I had to send twice; a lady told me they didn't have my August MCAT score, but I sent that in with my primary. Do they overturn rejections? The mistake was on their part.

I know some people who live in Rolling Hills (graduate housing) and like it. Although, none of them are "couples." Here is a link that may help answer your questions:
http://www.nova.edu/reslife/rollinghills/building_c.html
A lot of students live in apartment communities that are walking distance from Nova (traffic can get kind of crazy around campus). Apartments around campus run anywhere from 800-1000 for a 1/1, and 1000-1300 for a 2/2. I never checked out 3+ bedroom so can not help you out there.
Gibtone 11-14-2010, 07:18 AM I just flew down to nova this weekend to look at some housing options and Rolling Hills looks really nice, free shuttle service to and from campus, comes fully furnished and they have a resort style pool in building c. They hold the place down like it's the Pentagon.. you can't get any access to it unless you live there which is reassuring as well. It looks like you have the option to be paired up with other med students if you decide to live in a quad apartment rather than a studio. I visited some other places that were decent but it seems you want to stay on the side of 595 closest to nova to dodge the traffic by the highway. What caught me off guard is that alot of the apartment communities close by were filled with more families or other non-students rather than actual nova students. Glad I went down to check it out in person though it's def. different to see it in person rather then relying on the photos of the apartment websites....oh yea and Dtown Fort Lauderdale looks awwsommee, can't wait to get down there this summer!

How's the rent/utilities/electricity(for ACs) cost like at these different places?
p30doc 11-14-2010, 12:06 PM How's the rent/utilities/electricity(for ACs) cost like at these different places?
I have a three bedroom rent is ~1350, cable/phone/internet bundle is 125/mo, electricity is about 130/mo (We keep the ac at 78 during the day, and 70 overnight), water/trash/sewer is ~55/mo.
DrHuman 11-14-2010, 01:40 PM A few people have asked about research at NSU, and I ended up PM'ing one, then realized it'd have been useful for me to have read this before I even went down to NSU, so here it is if you're interested:
I was recently admitted to NSU and now with some time to kill, have been f'ing around on the NSU thread here.
There were multiple research labs in the Health Professions Buildings when we were touring the building. My guide didn't give us much of a description of what goes on there, but they were pretty standard looking biochem-ish labs. The dean had something really nice to say about research in that "we will never be only a research oriented school, as I want to be known for our teaching. However, I do consider it a shame to have so many smart people in one area and NOT to be contributing as much as we can to the scientific commons." He went on to say that they had just gotten (either 3 or 7 million, can't remember!) from NIH ("Which isn't much, but it's a great start"), and there are two research fellowships given each year for students between 2nd and 3rd years. It was fly- if you get it, you get tuition for the 3rd and 4th years waived, and a stipend on top of funding for whatever project you proposed.
They're definitely trying to up-their research output, and I got the vibe that if you just poke your nose around enough you can even go above and beyond this, especially considering the size of a few of the rotations sites (in Mt. Sinai and Palmetto in particular). There are also Osteopathic Principles and Practice fellowships, but that's another beast (that is funded...).

That seems very contradictory compared to my interview day. They told us about the research fellowship and the labs. However, when we passed by them on the tour, both tour guides scoffed and told us "no one does research here. we don't know any students that do any of that other than light behavioral stuff." Then both the faculty member that described the curriculum and one of my interviewers told me bluntly "this isn't the place for you if you want to do research". Which really disappointed me, considering how on their web page they try to promote their research opportunities. Then at the end of the day, we didn't have the dean speak to us on our day since he was out on a conference, but the assistant dean reiterated the same sentiment, that they are clinically focused and research isn't a priority for them because they "didn't want to be one of those schools", whatever that meant.

It says in the acceptance letter "within 90 calendar days from the date of registration".
Lukat 11-16-2010, 09:42 PM It says in the acceptance letter "within 90 calendar days from the date of registration".
Yeah, I am also confused by this word "registration". Does that mean from the day we received the acceptance letter or from the day we pay the deposit?
IamaBanana 11-17-2010, 06:58 AM Yeah, I am also confused by this word "registration". Does that mean from the day we received the acceptance letter or from the day we pay the deposit?
The next line is "or you will not be allowed to continue with your class work," which makes me think they are talking about registration for NSU classes. They probably give you a lot of time to get your transcripts in because there may be some students who are taking classes up to the very last day before matriculation. Maybe they put off a prereq until the last second, maybe they are just masochists. Whatever the reason, giving ample time to send in transcripts seems fair.
That being said, send in transcripts asap. No reason to wait.
DrBOshkosh26 11-17-2010, 07:02 AM Received an e-mail yesterday while I was working in the hospital. Called NSU this morning, and scheduled interview for Tuesday January 4th :). They had an/some opening/s for next Tuesday, but I'm at DMU this weekend and live in Wisconsin . That would have been an ugly airplane ticket price.
For those curious, NSU-COM received my secondary on 10/20/2010 and all of my LOE's on 10/21/2010 via Interfolio.
dogster 11-17-2010, 08:45 AM I just interviewed here recently (early Nov), and was pretty impressed with the school. I'm really hoping to get in, but I just got an email saying I don't have enough credits of physics. I've never run into this problem with any of the other schools I've applied to, but apparently I need 2 more credits. Does anybody know if this automatically makes me ineligible for admission? Or would they either make an exception or allow me to take the 2 credits at a local college?

Did you take both courses of intro physics with labs? If so then contact them and see if there's something you can work out, if maybe your undergrad institution goes by a different credit system.

I flew into Ft. Lauderdale. I stayed at Comfort Suites Davie. They provided a free shuttle from/back to the airport and NOVA.
kgelfen 11-22-2010, 02:30 PM I was recently interviewed at NOVA 11/9 and ACCEPTED 11/18
I flew into Ft. Lauderdale and stayed at the hotel recomended by school. They gave me free rides to and from Airport and NOVA.
The interview day was really relaxed and simple. They ask very few questions (like 6 or 7, kind of broad like "tell us about yourself") and write down your anwsers as you speak.
I felt my interview went OK, wasn't anything special. They noded and said ok. The interview people were nice in general i suppose.
Students were honest and showed us around the school.
We were told that NOVA accepts about 75% of the people they interview. So dont worry too much about. They only interview people they are accepting
When I came to the intreview i was already accepted to my top choice school, but i went anyway since i already had tickets.... SO i really didn't care to much and still got accepted.
Just act proffesional and you will be fine, this school is really just trying to make sure you are not crazy.
Good Luck!!!

Right now I am deciding between NSUCOM and KCUMB because I think systems-based is definitely the best choice for me.

hey barnold, I am in the same boat as you are right now. I'm debating between NSUCOM and KCUMB as well. I have never had genesis curriculum before so I'm not very sure whether it will be a good fit for me.
From my note I took at NSU interview, the first year is subject-based and the second year is system-based.

That really only affects a few professors, off the top of my head one in biochem & in pathology. Its not something that would cause you not to do well on any exam. As far as messy notes we are usually given the powerpoints or in the case of Physio an entire workbook of info. As you will find out that some students are never happy so the simple fact that the professor wouldn't give put the info in his slides or didnt explain it the way they wanted caused an uproar.
barnold 11-25-2010, 12:13 PM Soooo I got into NOVA and im extremely happy but Ive been reading in some of these forums and some people are saying that lecture notes are messy and confusing and professors are afraid to use certain info off books because of liability issues. Hey DannyNJ, I had some similar questions...
Would someone please PM me the email of one of the student ambassadors we met during interviews? I stupidly forgot to get any and wanted to ask a current student some questions.
ILikeFood 11-25-2010, 01:12 PM Can anyone speak to the curriculum for next year? Specifically, are they keeping it M1: subject-based and M2: systems-based for next year as is listed on the website? I have hard time finding info about this, but read somewhere that they just started the systems-based second year in 2009.
Right now I am deciding between NSUCOM and KCUMB because I think systems-based is definitely the best choice for me.
No idea, but M1 and M2 have remained subject based/system based this year and the previous year.

There is no perfect note set. SOME professors do lift images/text straight from books and are super paranoid about getting busted for copyright. If you want my opinion here it is:
The one department that is exceptionally bad is the biochemistry department. The one department that is exceptionally good is the physiology department. Other classes straddle the line but cover all the necessary subjects and THEN some. We used to have tests every Monday last year and fairly lax non science classes. They moved to block scheduled testing + Spanish + Behavioral Science classes for this years class, and people are supposedly going crazy, although med students tend to bitch a lot in general. It's understandable, since ~10 people from my class failed physiology, then it's remediation test, and had to be held back a year.
With that said, I personally hated 1st year with all my body and soul. The real payoff as far as preclinical coursework goes is in 2nd year, when everything is switched to systems. The 2nd year here is a godsend compared to the 1st year. We've covered Musculoskeletal, Heme/Lymph, Integumentary and are currently on GI, CV, and Respiratory systems right now. Next block, which is next semester, is Endocrine, Renal, and Neuro. Most tie in fairly well. We're picking hospitals for core rotations in Jan. NSU has a ridiculous amount of hospitals to choose from, something like 10-15. All cores will be based around this hospital. Outpatient rotations are done in the surrounding area. Some are better than others. They have 10+ years worth of student evaluations you can look through to get an idea of each hospital.
More thoughts on the first two years. They do not have a policy, with the exception of OPP, where you need to pass every single test to pass the course. Some med schools do this.
However, if you are struggling 1st year, there are no tutors provided beyond what you pay out of pocket for physiology and anatomy. Former MBS students usually do the tutoring. If you fail a test badly you do not get a call from the administration asking you how they can help. They don't do it because they have not bothered to set up resources to help struggling students and these students basically suffer on their own, or spiral downward and you never hear from them again. From what I've heard from the remediating students, there is no "counseling" session if you fail the remediation exam. You simply get an email saying that you've failed and then attach a schedule for the following year.
Also, attendance is harped on 1st semester of 1st year, but is not taken seriously afterward, unless you piss off the administration and then they will use lack of attendance to scare you straight for awhile.
Hmmm...oh yeah, classmates. Most of them are nice and I've made a lot of friends here. There's the usual gossip and cliques and douchebags but you cannot escape that if you go to medical school.
Overall, the school will prepare you well, the campus is gorgeous, the Davie area sucks as far as entertainment but is very well situated around malls, restaurants, downtown Ft Lauderdale, Miami, Palm Beach, etc.
But god help you if you are one of the people who toes the borderline academically. You will be in for a world of hurt, at least for the first two years.
ILikeFood 11-25-2010, 01:15 PM And yes, knowing it all, I would come back here again.
CanesBears22 11-25-2010, 08:48 PM Recently Accepted, NOVA is awesome, can't wait to meet you all

Thanks ILikeFood for the great post!
Just to add my $.02, there was so much collective bitching and moaning about the required Spanish class among the M1's this year that maybe, just maybe it may not be a requirement for the 2015 class.;) There were a bunch of surveys given out and some meetings with the administration about our issues with the spanish course. They say the whole point of having a mandatory Spanish course for our class was to prepare us for the mission trips which can used to complete the mandatory community service hours.
As ILikeFood mentioned, we have a block-style testing schedule this year as opposed to last year's weekly testing schedule. again, this did not work out well with the current M1's because the general consensus was it was not a true 'block style' exam schedule with a few study days like other med schools and yes, there was a lot of bitching about the extra courses like Spanish, clinical reasoning and behavioral med.
Whatever faults NSU may have, they are at least willing to listen to the students. Like I mentioned, they are always changing the curriculum each year. Which can be good or bad. They mean well and they are constantly trying to make improvements even if it seems like they are out of touch with the reality of the situation at times. so, whatever we're going through this year, you guys (future class of 2015) will most likely see changes.
Anyway, M2 year is much better (than 1st year) from what I've heard!:xf:
Good luck with your decision(s) if you haven't finalized your plans. I have to study for upcoming finals!
dannyNJ 11-26-2010, 12:50 PM thank you guys for all the great info. Again im def going to nova unless my state school gives me the okay. But on another note, my folks are givin me a hard time about bringing my car down. Is it realistic to go down there without a car and just use public transportation or no?
selfhealer 11-26-2010, 05:30 PM Anyone receive an interview invite here lately? I have been complete since late September and still no word.
It seems like they send out invites in chunks. So, has anyone been invited recently?
Manbearpig1 11-27-2010, 09:51 AM So Im really torn between PCOM and Nova and fluctuate almost daily sometimes hourly of which school before the Dec 15 deposit deadline. If any current students or applicants who have had to chose between these 2 schools has any feedback I would really appreciate your input. This is what Iv gathered so far.
PCOM:
-online lectures. this is soooo important for me bc i did a grad program where they had online lectures and i found i did much better with recorded lectures vs. atttending class bc i tend to zone out in class.
-campus sucks, its really just one bldg
-no mandatory attendance thank god
-Pcoms match list last yr was good but Novas was better in terms of specialties.
-i heard from a student that pcoms pass rate was below nat. avg last yr, cant confirm this but i care more bout avg board scores which i cant seem to find.
-i like to blay bbal but it seems the sixers are always hogging the court by practicing at pcoms court. Although on my int day I did get to c Igoudala, williams and couple other sixers shooting around that was cool.
-gyms kinda nice (novas is better)
-cold philly weather
Nova
-non-reliable, sometimes recorded lectures. (would have already chosen nova by now if they had recorded w/ no mand. attendance)
-mandatory attendance. (dean gave the speech about how mand. attendance is really imp. to understand the material but i dont buy this since Iv learned the material more thoroughly and efficiently by studying online lectures bc i can rewind when i dont understand something or pause)
-amazing campus w so many diff. programs. Great social learning env.
-awesome specialty match list. last yr(better than pcom imo)
-above avg pass rate
-biochem dept. is weaksauce (but does it rlly matter if nova kids r kicking a## & taking names on the match list)
-Gyms amazing
-2 bbal courts, solid pickup games readily available (I non-stealthly snuck in & played a few during my int stay)
-Florida weather
-the deans just an awesome guy. normally i wouldnt make a huge dec. based on one guy but he really inspired me about medicine as corny as that sounds. my type of dean tho.
Any other feedback would be awesome
MedIsInMyBlood 11-27-2010, 03:13 PM I think that they the invities "all-at-once". A lot of people include myself recieved an interview at the end of the August. They send enough invites to book all the dates from September to December.
They only interview people up to December? Most schools go into February and March I believe.
Lukat 11-27-2010, 03:24 PM They only interview people up to December? Most schools go into February and March I believe.
I think the reason why they schedule interviews till December only is because they want to wait and see roughly how many people will be coming (based on how many send in their deposits) and from that they can decide how many invites they should send out next. It's just a guess. Someone corrects me if I'm wrong.
gatorfann14 11-28-2010, 12:50 AM thank you guys for all the great info. Again im def going to nova unless my state school gives me the okay. But on another note, my folks are givin me a hard time about bringing my car down. Is it realistic to go down there without a car and just use public transportation or no?
A car is a must in florida. Most cities in florida are very spread out compared to northern cities.
mike1618 11-28-2010, 03:44 PM There are many issues with Nova's first year. One of the reasons is the medical sciences faculty is not run by the college of medicine. So in effect, there are no checks and balances in the curriculum. To make up for the insufficiency of some of the classes, they added extra classes. So basically we have two or three mediocre classes that could/should be sufficiently taught in one class. 31.5 credit hours is just plain stupid. The fluff classes take away from science classes. It is true that powerpoints are not distributed by most of the science faculty. Also, the only classes that use Tegrity are the ones that you wouldn't need it. Nova does not come across as a professional school. It really has the feel of highschool. All in all, I have been extremely disappointed with my first semester here.
With all of that being said, I did not choose Nova for their first year curriculum. I chose Nova for the kickass matchlist. They also have excellent clinical rotations. If you ask me now if I would choose Nova, I would probably say no; if you ask me after I am in residency, I would probably say yes. The end product here is great. If you can put up with the BS, the opportunities are outstanding. Also it seems that second year, which is only run be the college of med, is excellent. The current 2nd years seem to love it.
The best thing about Nova is the students. We have a group that has been extremely helpful with one another. We pool all of our resources (notes, materials, etc) to get around the insufficiencies of the faculty. I can't say enough positive things about our student body. We all feel like we are in the trenches together. We will be better physicians because of it.
Will you be happy with Nova? I don't know. I believe that you will initially be very frustrated here. In the end, you will get out what you put in. The opportunities are up for grabs, though you may just have to throw a few elbows to get there.
Good luck with your decision.
USCTrojan11 11-28-2010, 08:42 PM Do we need to do anything after submitting the first deposit? Also do we receive any correspondence after paying for the deposit? Hope everyone is doing well.
Eliz22 11-28-2010, 08:47 PM Does anyone know...
I was recently accepted to Nova. Is there a specific time period from the date of acceptance in which we must indicate whether or not we plan to hold a spot?Or do we just have to submit the deposit by the required date?
aidama 11-28-2010, 09:44 PM I have my interview on the 7th! Pretty excited. Flying into PBI and staying with my family, driving down to Laudy in the morning!
I want to ask them more about their attendance policy and recording. Do they at least provide notes?
Razmatazz 11-29-2010, 10:15 AM Anyone who interviewed on November 18th get notified yet?
Sinfest 11-29-2010, 11:40 AM How are grades given at NSUCOM? It's hard to find information on their website
patel2 11-29-2010, 06:53 PM hey guys im interviewing in a few days! I don't know too much about Nova though, and the website doesn't seem to be all that helpful for expalining notable aspects of the curriculum/school.
I like that their is a rural internship (I like working w/ underserved communities), love the location, the different hospitals available for rotations and know the school for its exceptional match list.
But I don't know that much else about the school. Can those students and others who interviewed give me your perspectives on the pros of the school versus the cons, and anything specific to nova that attracted you there? Like are there lots of student groups/organizations, is community-involvement big, is the semester a block schedule etc. Is Osteopathic techniques big at the school (I know some D.O. schools really emphasize it while some only give lip service)
Thanks!
UBCvan 11-29-2010, 07:06 PM Hey guys,
What If I have never taken a liberal art course and so can't provide such a LOR? can I use another LOR?
I emailed them, they did not reply.
patel2 11-29-2010, 07:06 PM also a few logistics questions.
Do we report to 3200 South University Drive, Terry Building/First Floor? This is an address on my e-mail list of activities for the day, but it doesn't specifically say on the e-mail where to report at 9am...
also ... to those who stayed at the comfort suits ft. lauderdale...do they always have a shuttle to take students to NOVA in the morning of the interview or do you have to request in advance? And in the morning that you checked out, did you bring your suitcase etc. with you to nova or request to leave it in the hotel and pick it up after the interview?

8:45 1st floor, turn right when you get inside and you cant miss it.
When you land at the airport, you can give the hotel a call and they will be over in about 10-15 minutes. You wait at the "shuttle pick up" spot with other people who are waiting for shuttles from other hotels.
You should tell them that you need a shuttle when you check in, just to be safe.

How can you say that if you are not in recidency? If you are so unhappy with year one, how can you feel good about future? Are you even going to be prepared for the clinical. Isn't year one and two important to get you ready for the boards??
By the way i have an offer from NOVA, but i am not so sure about it now, there is a lot of negative reviews about it on here....
Thanks.
