Just thought I'd make a thread for the Blacksburg campus applicants.

yeah, there are three different threads for VCOM here. I'm a little confused.

I applied for the Early Admission track. I really hope they call me for an interview. Does anyone know when we should be expecting a call or an email?

I wonder if they except all their EDP students. i wonder how its been in the past.

I hope we all get in!!

Where is everyone from? OUT OF STATE OR VA residents?

I just got the complete email this morning. It states, "We will begin reviewing completed applications in early August and will schedule our first interviews for early decision applicants in mid-September and for our general application pool in early-October". I guess its just a waiting game now :xf:

From VA with strong ties to VCOM. Went to VT undergrad, 2 LORs from VCOM faculty, family members attending there, as well as a lot of friends there. Also attended lectures and training events at the campus and worked in a lab on the research campus next door to VCOM. Needless to say, I'm pretty excited to hear back from this one. Good luck everybody!

VeeTeeHokies, did you apply for the early admission track. your ties to VCOM are pretty strong...
I don't think you even have to worry for anything. Looks like you'll get in for sure. Do you mind sharing your MCAT and GPA score..

I have a super low score! and 3.43 GPA

3.5 cGPA, 3.61 sGPA, 27N MCAT. More info on my ECs on my MDApps and some older posts if you're interested. And yeah it all sounds grand, but if I've learned anything about this process it's that it's all luck of the draw. We'll see how it goes.

As far as your GPA, might hurt you a bit because they're big on GPA over MCAT. I believe average MCAT was slightly above a 25 with an average GPA of ~3.6 for undergrads admitted last year. I know a lot of people there with very subpar MCATs and great GPAs.

edit: And no, I did not do the early admissions track. VCOM is near the top of my list, but they aren't THE top choice school on my list. I didn't want to limit myself for some of the other programs that have really captivated me as well.

From my rejection letter, and for your benefit:

Specifically, we look for a cumulative science GPA over 3.30; and competitive applicants present a science GPA at or above our average of 3.50. When calculating the science GPA, VCOM places an emphasis on the last 120 credit hours.

Pre-secondary, so I appreciate that they didn't make me waste the $50 or whatever.

Although it was somewhat of an eye-roll on my part because it said, in essence, 'one way to improve your science gpa is with a special masters program. here is a link to ours!'

sGPA was 2.8, so I was screened on that. MCAT 28Q wasn't enough to make up for it, I guess!

Hey Vee-Tee,
So I have a q for you, you might know the answer - my stats are as follow:

27Q MCAT (my highest combined MCAT = 28R)
3.09 SCI GPA (overall)
3.05 cum GPA (overall)
4.00 Post Bac
4.00 Masters (at Johns Hopkins)

Do you know if they will take into consideration that I have done super well since I graduated from college? I am a non traditional applicant with two years of experience in the engineering field and six years of experience teaching ( I graduated college in 2007). I was granted a secondary, so I don't know what the screening process is like for them.

Also, a q about the secondary - it says to keep our responses to half a page - I want to make sure I'm not exceeding their limit - do you know if it's single spaced or double spaced? Any ideas? My word counts for the essays are 296, 211, and 359.

Last q - can we send as many letters as we want, or should we only send two? I have three letters from professors, one from my supervisor at my teaching position, and one from a DO.

Thanks!!

Well I'm no expert on any of this stuff but....

1. I definitely think they'll take into account your overwhelming success at the postgrad level. You killed your postbacc and masters (they have an MPH partnership with Hopkins so that may even play in your favor).

2. When I filled out the secondaries, I just made sure that no two essays overflowed into a second page. I'm sure going a little over on one and a little under on another is no big deal, they just don't want you going overboard.

3. Send as many letters as you have, it can't hurt you to give them as much information as possible to work with. Unless of course that information portrays you in a negative light, of course.

Good Luck!

I just wanted to stop by and let you guys know that if you have any questions about anything feel free to PM me or just post on here because someone else may have the same question. Hi Danaling12,

Couple of questions for you.

How many students are in your class?
If it's a larger size, how close are you with your peers (study groups, extracurriculars, etc.)?
What separated VCOM from the others schools you applied to?
How are the living conditions?

(For anyone) Have you taken any OMT courses? If so, what was your first impression vs. your thoughts about OMT at the end of the course?

Thanks for your time. I hope to have a chance to meet you next year.

Hey Tottil,

Our class has 189 students.

As for how close we are....well its only the third week of class so we are still getting to know each other and making friends. However, our class has certainly shown that we can pull together. We have a classmate who is expecting a baby this week, and we as a class pitched in to raise over $400 to help her by some things she needed for her baby. Quite a few people know each other from being at virginia tech and doing the vcom post-bacc program.

Most clubs and organizations do not start meetings until September, but a couple groups have done a few programs. For example, the other day the student osteopathic surgeon association (SOSA) had a splits and sutures workshop for first year students. We had banana splits, and then we learned some suturing techniques and practiced on the bananas.

I chose VCOM because of the family/friendly atmosphere, and it just fit/felt more comfortable for me. I originally had an acceptance to PCOM in Philly, but I am not really a city girl and jumped at the opportunity when I had my VCOM acceptance. Granted I had to take a year off, but it was worth it to me.

Living conditions are amazing, and the cost living is so cheap (especially compared to NJ). It is great if you like the outdoors and living near a college town. You do have to travel a little to find somethings, but that hasn't bothered me. If you have any other questions please let me know! Hope this helps!!

~ Dana

Dana,

Thanks for the info. Glad to see the school has activities for the students. It sounds like a great community, and I have never been interested in city life, so it seems like a nice fit.
I also like the larger class size.

Hope the baby gets big and strong.

I'll probably shoot more questions at you as time progresses. Thanks again.

-Tom

Hey,

I was initially waitlisted for an interview in mid-September. I eventually got an interview in March, and was waitlisted after my interview, and received an early admission for this year's class if I didn't get off the waitlist for the c/o 2013. So all I can say is don't give up hope because it can def work out.

In the "complete" e-mail they sent me in August, it said that early decision applicants will be interviewed in September and regular decision applicants will be interviewed in October. So, I guess they are trying to interview the early decision applicants and then they will get to the other applicants. I am not sure what is taking so long though....I guess we will just have to wait...

I was given an update at August 31st, important points of the e-mail, "pre-interview hold ... are interested in your candidacy ... will be reviewed further." Since it happened so early I don't know if that means I am on hold for an interview which they are waiting to send out after EDP decisions or if I am just on hold in general and they have given out invites to regular admissions people already.

Why don't you just call or email and ask where they are in the process? I"m not early decision, so I was told those non-EDP wouldn't be interviewed until October, but the admission office is really nice- just contact them!

If I can give you any advice about the interviews it would be to just be yourself and relax. I know it's nerve-wracking to be sitting there one on one with the people interviewing you, but during my interviews they had a way of keeping you relaxed. Just take a deep breath, and I'm sure you will be fine. Have the confidence that you've done enough to deserve an interview, and now they just want to get to know you. Good luck with everything!!

try not to be nervous! they really try to lower the stress level and make interviews mostly a conversation. just read as much info you can on vcom and why you like it. also, make sure you know your stuff about osteopathic medicine and why you want to be a DO. looking at the interview info on this site is also a big help. you'll do great!

vcom has an amazing turn-around time. you will know your results in 1 week to 2 weeks, depending on when the admission committee meets.

good luck all of you!! :-) maybe i'll see some of you guys next year!!

Hey guys!

A little advice from a first year like other people said, just relax!!!! I wish VCOM would have been my first med school interview and not my last lol. I would definitely be prepared to answer why VCOM or why DO. Another topic could be if you have an interest in mission trips I would maybe look at the medical outreach site on VCOM because they LOVEEEEE their mission work. I'm sure you will both do fantastic. Just think they already looked at your application and thought you were a good fit, and now they just want to get to know you as people.

Hope all goes well!

Try not to stress yourself out worrying about the interviews. You should definitely prepare by looking at some of the feedback on here and reading over your application materials. That being said, everything was very laid back except for on interviewer. Very complex questions concerning healthcare and moral issues. I think the biggest thing they are looking for when asking these kind of questions is that you form an educated opinion and stick with it. Dont let them get you flustered when playing the devil's advocate. Good luck to all!

Just want to say I was thoroughly impressed at the Open House yesterday! Anatomy lab that replaces the entire volume of air every 12 minutes = no smell. :) Great faculty and staff committed to seeing students succeed. Great OMM demonstration. 6-hour drive each way was very well spent! Fantastic!
Now, I just need an interview :D

Did you get a chance to speak to an admissions counselor? I wonder if they are giving out iviews yet. Are you interested in the VA or the SC campus?

I did get to spend about 5 minutes with admissions (VERY helpful). Sounds like the committee meets every week if they can all schedule it. I'm interested in the VA campus. You? How far did you travel and what were your impressions of the day?

I went to the Open House on the 25th. I have submitted everything and my application is on 'hold' status, this means they aren't rejecting me but will review my application later for a possible interview invite.

I went mainly to get the 5 minutes with admissions to try and help my application. I talked with the councilor and basically was told I could submit a letter of intent to admissions and they would review my application. I was grateful for the time, although the 10 hours round trip wasn't fun.

The presentation about the school and curriculum where great! But the OMM presentation/demonstration and Student Question panel sucked! They had a student from their first graduated class (2007) that just finished her FM residency and is starting a Sport Med Fellowship do the OMM presentation/demonstration. Well she read straight from the slides she had. What kind of professional gives a presentation like that? Not a very good one. It made me wonder Is this the kind of student the school cultivates? Also while watching her stumble through the presentation I just really thought the school could have gotten someone else to represent them. Or was this individual representing them? If so then Id rather stay a competent Pre-Med than an incompetent D.O.

The student panel did nothing to make me think VCOM is a school that I would want to go to. The students where honest, but all their answers to the questions given them where along the lines of "Its a family centered school, I enjoy it, I got into this school so yeah I came here since I live close".

I was not impressed at all with VCOM.

FYI I was complete on August 16 (or so) and received an interview on Friday the 24th for October 7. They actually called me to confirm the interview and give the invite.

I too went to the open house this week, and will agree that the OMM presenter was not the best public speaker. However, she did seem like a competent physician and I did learn a little about OMM and what it takes to be a DO. Otherwise, the open house was a great experience and I learned a lot.

I am super excited about VCOM, and right now it is my first choice.

The OMM presenter was most likely chosen because she was local (in fact it seems that she was from somewhere up north, came to VT, then VCOM, then did her residency in the area, and then returned to VCOM for her fellowship), and because she is a Sports Medicine Fellow, which basically translates to her being an absolute professional when it comes to OMM. She did go off on a tangent about how she loves using OMM and she wouldn't have it any other way, and I'm sure that is part of the reason why she was chosen for an OMM presentation as well.

someone reading from a powerpoint makes you think she's incompetent? she may not be a great public speaker, which does not determine whether she is competent or not. if you dont think VCOM makes good doctors or lets people in that don't get in anywhere else, then how the heck are you not accepted, but are on hold? to me it sounds like youre just angry that you are on hold.

Yes I am on hold, but Ive had 4 other interviews and 3 acceptances. Angry? I dont really think so.

As far as the panel discussion let me explain a little more. The students to me did not show enthusiasm to set VCOM apart from any other medical school. Even though they had a "Yeah I got in here and came" attitude, thats fine! I think some people could really care less about the school they go to as long as they are a physician, and thats fine, there is nothing wrong with that. BUT when you are trying to show off a school I would have thought they would of had students that where real excited about the school. Students that could have shown me WHY I would want to go to VCOM over any other school. The point of an Open House is to 'sell' the school. When you try to 'sell' something you want to make the best presentation possible, and I feel that VCOM did not do that.

As far as the presentation goes, the point of putting text on a power point is so that those sitting in on the discussion read it, never to much, not that you read it for them. You are right she may not be a good public speaker.

The whole point Im trying to make is I don't think that VCOM represented themselves as well as they could have. Ive been to other open houses and a handful of interviews and most left me excited and gave me reasons to want to attend that school or left me with a feeling of this is just another school.

This is a forum where people discuss and give their inputs and I do apologize for being a bit critical of the speaker.

I just think VCOM came up short and did not show me any reason as to why I should choose their school over another.

Im not sure. The main reason I applied was because Im about 6 hours away from it and going there would keep me closer to family. Im still in the air about it.

Part of me wants to because of the location but since I wasn't too impressed with the school I'm not sure if its worth my time doing the things admissions suggested to try and procure an Interview.

Just thought I would say once again that I was impressed with VCOM. I have been on 2 interviews (1 DO 1 MD) and have 6 more scheduled other than VCOM, so I doubt if it will be my only choice. With that said, right now it is choice #1 for me because it fits me well. My only point here is that you should all go and see the school for yourself. The only way you are going to know if you like it or not is to experience it first hand. Easy E brings a valuable perspective, as well as everyone on here. Just don't get too caught up in what others say and make your decision after you have ALL of the information.

I live outside of the Appalachian region and I've been accepted already! :) However, I have lived in VA my entire life, and I have been camping in the Appalachian region basically every year since I was 12 and I indicated that in one of my interviews. (VCOM does 3 separate interviews with 3 different interviewers.)

Anyway, here are my stats:
sGPA: 3.6
cGPA: 3.7
MCAT: 29O

It should be noted that I speak Spanish and did volunteer work in the Dominican Republic, which is where one of their clinics is located and one of my interviewers is in charge of the programs. I think that really helped.

I was granted and interview last year and was accepted but wait listed because they already filled the class but got guaranteed a spot in the 2015 class. I am from Long Island so out of the appalachian region. I went to Penn State,

GPA 3.8
SGPA 3.6
MCAT 23m

from what i remember those were my stats, i also did research had one presentation and publication with my research, experience working in a physical therapy office, an internship with an ent and about 3000 hours volunteer work with the local fire department.

I just got an e-mail from Mr. Corvin that my application has been placed on hold after reviewing for an interview. Has this happened to anyone else? If so, have you sent in supporting documents or just waited it out? Also, any idea on the timeline for when they will review again?

Although I have gotten into my top choice school, I wanted to at least check out VCOM before accepting there since I am a Virginia resident and I liked what I saw at the open house. Always good to have options, right?

Hey I am a first year here at VCOM and my application was put on hold initially as well when I applied (in early September). In the meantime I interviewed at PCOM in Philly and was already to go there, and VCOM called me in March for an interview. I decided to come for the interview, and I am so happy I did because I love it here. I liked PCOM, but I think VCOM was better fit for me personally. I was waitlisted and given an early acceptance for 2014. I did not send in any documents or anything (probably because I had an acceptance elsewhere). I don't know if this helps or not. I would suggest documents if you are really interested though. Good luck and congrats on your other acceptance!

It is unfortunate to hear that you had a bad experience at VCOM. My interview day was quite the opposite. I interviewed in February for the c/o 2014 but was offered a spot for next year's class. Everyone involved in the day was enthuisiastic about the program and had a ton of information to share. They were very up front about the curriculum changes that were taking place and in speaking with students it has gotten better and better with each year. I would not expect anything different from a relatively new program other than currciculum changes. It is done so that each year the board scores and schedules of each class improve and continue to do so. As far as the interviewers go, having interviewed at other schools you should know what to expect.
Saying that they already had you in the reject pile hints as to what kind of interview you conducted. It is your job as a student to present yourself in such a way as to convince your interviewer that you will be an asset as a future alumnus of their program. During the interview season I met all sorts of personalities each with their own interview style and questioning (intimidation, moral/ethics, conversational, etc.) For anyone who is preparing to interview or contemplating it, I would highly reccomend mock interviews with a faculty or friend.
Not trying to harp here, I am glad you found a school that you enjoy and will be happy attending. Everyone has a different experience at programs during interviews which ultimately helps to develop a diverse class and enrich the experience of medical school. best of luck to everyone with interviews!

I got the phone call for the interview invite for 11/15 yesterday and I was wondering where people stayed and flew into and if anyone else is interviewing the same day!

3 interviews sounds kind of intense, are they just with one interviewer each time?

I just wanted to share with you all some of my feelings and my opinions regarding VCOM. Before, interview day, I was really excited and VCOM was my first choice. After interview day, everything changed around....

1. Admissions director did not seemed enthusiastic at all...the only person that was enthusiastic was Julianna
2. Interview 1: interviewer seemed stern and spoke only once or twice but asked many questions that made it apparent that I was in the reject pile...the interviewer also completely bashed the school's curriculum
3. Interview 2: Complete interrogation. Questions were read off of a list and the interviewer did not say a word...again some questions asked made it apparent that I was in the reject pile
4. Interview 3: this one was great...conversational with a few questions
5. The tour of the building was a total disaster...the first year who gave the tour did not even know how to give a tour...the tour literally took 3 mins...."this is the lecture hall, and this is the anatomy lab".....
6. Lunch was good and so was the conversation withe the first and second year students

So after the interview, I contacted some of my friends who do attend VCOM and it seems like they are really frustrated with the schedule changes and said that they would recommend that I attend another DO school instead.

So, literally the next day after my interview, I got the REJECT e-mail...I knew this was going to happen just by the way the interviewers were questioning me....The thing that is making me mad is not the fact that they rejected me but the fact that they invited me for an interview when they had already decided that they were going to reject me....A lot of students in the past have gone through a similar situtation where the school decides beforehand but still invites you for an interview....

Anyways, I already have an acceptance despite my low MCAT scores because that school saw me as a person with the qualities required to make a great physician....

For all those SDNers out there who are having trouble getting into med school, my advice is to keep trying because there will be a school that will see you beyond your numbers :)

VCOM has one of the lower average MCAT scores, because they do see beyond the numbers. I know of two people there from my undergrad school with 18s on it.

vcom is definitely a school that sees beyond numbers. they look at the whole person. and on interview days, interviewers will ask hard questions and be stern to see how you respond during pressure. this happens at every medical school. i highly doubt they gave you an interview when they already knew they were going to reject you. why would they waste their time then? there are thousands of other applicants. sorry you didn't like vcom or have a good interview day. my interview day was amazing! i had conversational interviews and stern, questioning, difficult interviews. it's med school, that's to be expected.

congrats to those of you that got in to vcom! class of 2015! whoop! lol. search facebook for the VCOM - Virginia Class of 2015 and join. great way to get to know your future classmates! :)

If you did not rent a car where did you put your luggage during the interview? Thanks in adavance.

when i interviewed, we were finished by 3pm. so i think you would have enough time to get back to roanoke. also, the last part of the interview is driving you around blacksburg looking at apartments so you dont really have to go on that if youre not interested or dont have tiem.

You'll find some complainers at every medical school; some are just more vocal than others. We have several here, all you need to do is look at last year's application thread to see all the drama that went down. Those people got shot down pretty hard by other students who called them out on their BS.

They'll complain about VCOM's faculty, curriculum changes, testing changes, and the like. They will also complain about how cold and windy Blacksburg is, how there is no culture here compared to D.C., that there is nothing to do here, that this place is full of rednecks, and why the person sitting next to them seems to never wear deodorant. My point is, med students get stressed out, and some of them turn to negativity as a defense mechanism. I like VCOM. Virtually everyone else I speak to also has a positive view of VCOM. Of course the school has some problems like any other institution, but this year has been smoother than the last.

My advice to you is not to get too worried over 1st and 2nd year problems. The only variable that matters in the first two years is your own hard work. Bad professors, poor facilities, and a terrible location will not affect your Step 1 scores like your own ability to learn independently and efficiently. The most important thing any med school can offer to you is good clinical rotations, and VCOM seems to do pretty well in that regard. There are several schools out there that will dazzle interviewees with marble flooring, gigantic flat screen TVs in the anatomy lab, and a free tablet PC for every med student. Those are all nice things, but it won't matter if the med school has awful rotation sites. Your clinical knowledge is what will set you apart as a physician, not your bookwork in the first two years.

Book list came out I think just before classes in June? I don’t remember though exactly. I didn’t get any books except Anatomy atlas. The review books seem to be the best book to get, for me anyways. Lippincott biochemistry, microbiology made ridiculously easy etc. Depends on the type of person you are. All information tested comes from the lecture notes anyway.

Vcom is a great place. I personally have not had any problems with schedule or testing or anything related to changes. We had one change to the schedule that didn't really matter. If you choose VCOM you'll be happy.

Did you block it out already?

Take a look at the last few pages of that thread. A member of your own class took care of your melodrama.

How are rotations, btw?

If you interpret a few competing viewpoints as my being "shot down pretty hard," then so be it. I offered concrete examples of the kind of foolishness that had become "the norm" at VCOM. Are things miraculously better this year? I don't really know because I'm not there day in and day out. I would be very surprised if things have improved significantly.

It doesn't take many neurons to figure out why more people don't post negative comments about VCOM on this forum. Did you block out the post about how the dean berated a student for posting something negative on here? It was a well-known fact that administrators viewed these forums.

How are rotations? Great. I've met very few residents (who are former students), attendings, and administrative personnel who have anything good to say about VCOM. I don't interject my thoughts, but it does make me feel good to know that I'm not the only person who thinks there are problems.

Hey there, I'm another 1st year so if anyone has any questions let me know. The book list wasn't given to us till July. Personally, I buy them all because of my scholarship allows me to, but I know I haven't opened 80% of them. Yes, VCOM does have new technologies. I just got back from an interview there a few days ago--they have 5 simulation robots (I guess you can call them that, although don't tell Dwight Schrute). One is a woman, Noelle, who actually gives birth to a newborn, one is a neonatal, one is a 6-month old baby, and one is called SimMan 3G, who can sweat, bleed, and even allows you to inject him with anything because he has a radiolabel and can tell you if your diagnosis was correct. Their anatomy lab is state of the art--air recycles every 12 min, and all the tables have circulation that suck down, so no fumes go in your face. OMM labs are nice and have computer stations on wall outside so you can review charts and post notes after exams. Lecture halls are nice and big, and the Va Tech campus is gorgeous and offers a good study library

danznchandee16
11-04-2010, 01:26 PM
and there is a TV inside the OMM labs so you can see close up what the professor is doing. There is also VCOM TV if you can't go to class one day. I think mcp6g covered everything else that I know of!

No real big worries for interview day...I interviewed last Tuesday--pretty laid back. You start with about 30 mins of intro to the school and overview, then you break into 3 interviews. You will see a matrix of the people you interview with. I have done a lot of research in the past, so it seemed--at least to me--that many of my interviews were research-focused. My second interviewer was a little more inquisitive and hardcore, but the other two were straight convo's. I got a few questions on the current health care debate, so know a small fraction of that--basically, just what you think is wrong. Other than that, just don't remain overly quiet during group time and have fun!

Also accepted yesterday :) I plan to go through the rest of this cycle to see what happens, but I'm IS and pretty much loved everything about the school. Actually interviewed today at a MD school that gave me a horrible feeling/impression. On the other hand, I definitely felt the "great fit for me" feeling at VCOM.

Thinking about coming back for a second visit later on when the M1s and M2s aren't on break. Has anyone else done this in the past? Anyone think Adcom would have an issue? I know the Adcom office is full of plenty of insanely nice people, so hopefully they won't mind me taking a random look.

Hey Everyone - I finished my secondary and was complete on 10/26. I got an email the other day that read "We recently reviewed your file for an interview. Our committee decided not to immediately proceed with your file and grant you an interview. They are, however, interested in your candidacy and asked that your file be placed on hold for further review. Specifically they will re-review your file after we receive the MCAT scores from your most recent or upcoming examination." Has anyone else gotten this email or anyone from last years cycle know of anyone being accepted after receiving this initial email?? I hope it works out positively b/c VCOM is one of my top choices...

In order to help those who read this and can add any insight here are my stats:
cumGPA: 3.31
sciGPA: 3.62
MCAT: 21R (brutal, I know) and retaking in Jan 2011

I am more or less a non-trad applicant having an English degree earned in 2004 with about 2.5 yrs work experience before going back to take my pre-reqs and apply to med school. I have strong LORs from professors, an MD, a DO, and a community service supervisor. I have spent time shadowing a DO as well as allo physician, volunteered at a hospital and community health clinic, and also been an elementary school tutor for the past couple years so I feel like my extra curriculars are pretty decent. Any insight/advice/words of wisdom would be great!

We are in the same boat. I can't give you words of wisdom, but I can empathize.

I think what they are telling you is they will re-review your application once you get that mcat score in, which will be mid to late February if I'm not mistaken.

The waiting is tough, but it certainly beats a "no thanks". I really like this school too, so I hope things work out for both of us.

Here's to hoping for the best :xf:

Good luck!

Hey English2MD and Tottil,

I am currently a first year at VCOM, and the one thing I can tell you is to not give up! I applied for the c/o 2013, and my application was put on hold in early September. I interviewed and was accepted and planned on going elsewhere. I went all the way until March before they called me for an interview, and while I didn't get in because the class was full, I was offered early acceptance to 2014. VCOM completely changed my mind. So here I am as a first med student at VCOM vs. being a second year somewhere else, and I know it was the best decision I could have made for myself. My recommendations would be to try to write a LOI, and with the MCAT there isn't much to do but wait. However, I believe people in my class got in with scores lower than your first score (so just deep breath and relax, you'll do great!).

Another suggestion would be to see if VCOM is traveling to your area at any point to speak to any colleges. Bea came to my roommate's college and she too had been put on hold. She went up and just introduced herself to Ms. Jones after the presentation, and said she had applied and had been put on hold. Bea said she would pull her file and look at it, and a few days later my roommate received a phone call for an interview.

So don't give up....don't ever give up hope (Jimmy V.)

Good luck!!

Does anyone know why they limit the amount of financial aid?

I'm pretty sure the Director in fin aid said they limit how much you can take because they want to prevent you from having debt up to your eyeballs, in some fashion or another :p. He was pretty clear cut that the budget they have posted is the all out, overly luxurious lifestyle that you won't need while in school. Nonetheless, you can still work with them to figure something out, and it seemed like they were really helpful about giving you specific scholarship info.

i believe if you get an interview then they believe you have what it takes to do well in medical school. they want to see if you are a good fit for the school, if you handle yourself appropriately and professionally during an interview, and how much knowledge you have on osteopathy and the medical field and general, and if you truly seem to want to learn about medicine. so as long as you interview well, you have a great chance of getting accepted! i wish all of you interviewing soon the very best of luck! hope you get to join the rest of us in the class of 2015!:)

I'm not 100% sure, but your 4th year you have some rotations that you have to do at VCOM approved sites. You also have 4-5 medical/surgical electives/selectives that you can do at any site as long as you get previous approval. The current advice is to use these electives to visit places you are interested in for residency to see if you like the hospital, people, etc, and so that the program directors and such can meet you. So I'm pretty sure you are able to go anywhere you like. I would look at the website under 3rd and 4th year tab for more information.

you may still have a chance. i didnt send my primaries into late oct/early nov last year and it took a month for AACOMAS to send it out. then i got a secondary from VCOM very quickly. but i definitely took too long to fill it out. i got an interview but the class was already full by january so i was waitlisted with an automatic acceptance for this year. so as long as you fill out the secondary as soon as you get it you may still be okay. good luck!

Hey everyone,

I was put on hold at VCOM, but recently I sent them an update for my job as well as a transcript for a class I just took. Julianne Smart in the office wrote back thanking me for the updates, and she also included that I was welcome to write a letter of intent. I haven't been offered an interview or anything, but should I take her up on the offer and write one? Would it be a bad idea if I get an interview but then am waitlisted later? I'm assuming you can only write so many LOIs to a school.

Help would be much appreciated.

You have 4 electives (any teaching instititution in the US, and even some places abroad), 3 medical selectives (choose from a list of medicine stuff. What is medicine stuff? anything not surgery basically), and 2 surgical selectives (all the types of surgeries). All selectives though have to be at AOA/VCOM sites, so no MD programs in the selective list. Out of the 5 selectives (3 med + 2 surg), 3 have to be at a VCOM site. ANY vcom site. Also we have to do ER somewhere in there too...

Keep posting questions you might have. -3rd year

if any of you current VCOM students dont mind me asking, how much did you have to borrow your 1st year for school, books, and living expenses?
I took out the max which was something like 28k (total of 60k that year including tuition). Books aren't that big of an expense unless you just buy every single thing they say to buy, which you shouldn't do. Honestly I know some in my class who did the whole thing without buying books.. A lot of them are available digitally entirely online through the vcom library. Also, the library has them physically. Medical textbooks also aren't grossly overpriced as compared to undergrad.

For those current students, what is the competition like to get rotations in the Salisbury/Fayetville area 3rd year? Just an assumption, but with so many VCOM students being VT alumni, I would imagine a lot would want to stay in Virginia for rotations. Any information you have would be appreciated.

They change the way they group the sites every year, so don't bank on how the rotations are grouped this year being the same in 2-3 years. Don't go into your 1st 2 years planning on going to one certain site for your rotations. They are very open about the fact that some rotation sites may change. Just know that you will need to be flexible for your rotations.

That said, Fayetteville was not a competitive site this year. The more competitive ones are NRV and Roanoke, Spartanburg SC, and Eastern VA. As long as Fayetteville is still a site in the next few years, I doubt you would have too much trouble getting it. Salisbury is not its own site. They use Salisbury for just a few rotations but the majority of rotations would be elsewhere. I know it is part of the Morganton, NC region but I'm not sure what other regions it is linked to.

Hope that helps!

I was wondering about this too. I was placed on a pre-interview hold back in September and have been on hold ever since. I called the admissions office a few times between now and then and it just seems like all they will tell you is "if there is a change in your status we will notify you." So basically, there is nothing to do but wait, which is sucks :(

I was placed on hold before my interview last year as well. I am a first year now. One of the reasons for me was that they were waiting for me to finish some upper science courses and raise my GPA, once I got those in I sent in an LOI and I think that was the best advice anyone could have given me. About a week after I sent it in I got an interview. I know the waiting can be challenging but hang in there, send in an LOI if you haven't yet...message me if you have any other questions I'm happy to help...

Hey everyone,

I am currently a first year at VCOM. I interviewed for the class of 2013 in late March and was waitlisted. When the rankings for the waitlist came out I was told that if I did not get in that I would have a guaranteed acceptance to 2014. There wasn't much movement on the waitlist, and gave up another acceptance and took a year off to go to VCOM. So even if you are a late interviewee I would still encourage you to interview your best as you never know if people may drop out that week. If there aren't spots you still make a strong case for yourself for a good waitlist ranking and guaranteed early acceptances. So don't give up hope and trying! guaranteed acceptances only go to those in the top tier of the wait list. admissions said there is a top, middle, and bottom of the waitlist. so only a portion of those waitlisted get an acceptance

Do I still have to have a titer although I have had the vaccines? The nurse and doctor didn't seem to think so by reading the information page provided. So I just included the dates for those doses. Also went ahead and sent copy of my CPR certification which isn't required to be sent in until later this summer. I was certified Aug. 2010. Will that still be okay for upcoming year when my CPR card says valid for one year?

You do need your Hep B titer, because if you are negative you have to repeat the entire series and have another titer drawn. I was negative and found out when I got here that I needed to have the series done again. I don't know about the CPR, but you should be good. Here is the PDF on the VCOM website that is pretty clear on what you need.

yes you have to have your MMR, Hep B and varicella titers, regardless if you have or haven't had the vaccines. It says that if you dont have everything you're supposed to have with the forms then you haven't met the deadline. I'd be calling the health coordinator and asking for an extension.

I think your CPR card will be fine, as long as it's valid before the July 1st deadline. I'll have to renew mine again since mine expires in May.

I hope I can get all my things turned in on time. Just got my physical and shot records done today. Titer results wont be in until early to mid next week so we'll see if it's on time!

I originally interviewed in late March for the class of 2013 and was waitlisted. When the ranked waitlist came out in May I was offered an early acceptance for the class of 2014 if I didn't get off of the waitlist. Only a certain tier of people waitlisted get that offer.

Having interviewed there Feb 8 and heard back, the situation is this: they have given all the spots away for Fall 2011. What they are doing is interviewing you and deciding whether to put you on the waiting list. If they put you on the waiting list, you may be offered a spot someone gave up this cycle, be offered a spot for the next cycle, or be denied this year. Hope that helps.

Can you explain this? I didn't understand....So your either get waitlisted or rejected. If a spot openings for this year your in, but how do they decide who gets a spot for next year.

I interviewed today. I felt it went well and it was a wonderful experience.

I interviewed today. I felt it went well and it was a wonderful experience.

So I was waitlisted because there are no open spots right now. Their only options post-interview are to put you on the waiting list or reject you. If they put you on the waiting list, they will rank you according to all the variables they look at: interview, personal statement, GPA, MCAT, etc. Then in the future (didn't get a timeline) they will let you know based on your rank whether a spot has opened for you (someone offered a spot previously denied it for another school), whether they will give you early admission for the next year (fall 2012), or whether they say sorry, good luck next year. Hope that makes more sense.

Received an interview invite today! I politely declined it so that someone reading this thread could have it. I was placed on a preinterview hold around Nov (thought you all would like to know that the preinterview waitlist is moving). Best of luck to everyone!

Just a friendly notice for any students that have been accepted to VCOM and is attending ASD next weekend to check your VCOM email for some important information. Also join the facebook group!!

I feel guilty holding on to more than one acceptance... If VCOMs deposit wasn't $1500 NONrefundable this decision would be alot easier. AH!

Are you coming to any of the dinners on Friday night?! I think Bull and Bones might be a good choice ;). I think Jess will be hosting one of the dinners too. Let me know if you are coming or if you and your family would like to attend. See you next weekend :D!

Do it! The lady told me they take about 100 people on the waitlist. 20 of them will get in for this year and another 60 roughly will get early acceptance for next year! Thats a 80% chance.

So after reading this thread it seems that my only chances are for a waitlist-acceptance or an acceptance for the next year. I just received an interview invite and am wondering whether it's worth going to. I hate to close the door on VCOM, because I am interested in it and have been since the beginning, but am not willing to wait until the 2016 class since I already have an acceptance at a school with which I am happy. Should I cancel my interview?

So I recieved at interview at VCOM. I'm working on my masters at another osteopathic med school. The first semester I got all A's and B's and two Cs. I have a 3.6 undergrad. How should I explain? We are taking the same classes as the med students and I just didn't realize what was expected of me and I bombed the first tests....

Opps.. Interview
What do you mean? C's happen, and even the most top tier medical schools in the country take people who've gotten C's before. It's no big deal really. If it comes up in an interview (which I doubt), then just say "ah yeah, I probably didn't study enough." Don't try to weasel your way out of it with excuses and you'll be fine. Honesty = best.

If you're a male, wear a suit and tie (doesn't have to be a black suit but most guys do wear black suits). If you're a female, a modest skirt and a nice shirt. And if you're a total baller and want to break the rules, do it with style and not with jeans and a long sleeve t-shirt.

hmm... unless they've changed it, this is different than what they told us. they said every year it is different for how many people get in for this year. some years several people will be able to get in and some years only a few. and we were told only the top tier of the waitlist gets an early acceptance for the following year. just different information that i got! not saying anyone's wrong! hope this helps with your decision

This August 1st starting date is throwing a kink in my plans. I am working a camp that won't be finished that early. I was going by their start date last year and thought it would be the same. I wonder where that extra week is being utilized...more class time or more time off somewhere down the line.

It is starting a week early to accommodate the Greenville campus and all th new demands there. That way, the Blacksburg campus can assist the Greenville campus. Therefore, I would imagine that there will be the same number of days, so Blacksburg will just get off earlier and start earlier........

Just go to the main website: http://www.vcom.vt.edu/2015/

Thanks SG3, thats not too bad of a number compared to alot of other medical schools. I wish I applied for early decision at VCOM because I doubt I would be on the waitlist if I done so, especially with my scores. My advice to you is to apply to early decision because you would be ahead of the game.

I applied to VCOM in the middle of January since I was waiting to get into Cornell School of medicine, but got rejected after the interview. Wish I would had applied to more than one school back in 2010 fall lol

Be yourself...it was the most relaxing interview I ever been on. In mines, out of the hour and a half of interviewing with the 3 faculty members, we talked about medicine for only 10 minutes and the rest of the time we talked about sports and the things I like to do outside of healthcare. Oh yea, make sure you know everything you put in your application because they will reference it throughout the talk somehow lol

Just a little word to the wise. While they may put the block calendar out in early April, it is NOT set in stone. So if you book or make any big plans just do it with the caution that they may change it. We were supposed to get out June 10th and part way through block 2 it got changed to June 17th. People had already made plans and I was applying for a research position, and had to withdraw because our summer wasn't going to be long enough for the position. So just an FYI VCOM does reserve the right to change it at any time if necessary to accommodate academics. So even if it does come out in April, it can change in May, June, July, October or whenever.

Did anyone else on the waitlist get an updated email from VCOM today that asked if you selected both campuses on your secondary application, that you have to select either VCOM or BOTH campuses again through an email reply.

I'm kinda iffy on my reply because I never visited the Spartanbug campus before and can't even compare it to the Blacksburg campus. Have anyone went to Spartanburg, SC before?

so i went to spartanburg to look at the area. the school is located in a very bad section of town! i then looked up the stats on crime in spartanburg and it is much, much higher than the national average. so i guess i have to factor safety into choosing between the VA or SC campus as well. i do hope that they fence in the school so that when students leave at night, they will be a little safer walking to their cars!

I live pretty close to Spartanburg, and I have to say that I'm quite surprised the school was built on Howard Street. It's notorious for shootings, prostitution, drugs, and other sorts of issues. Here's an article about how dangerous the area is: http://www2.wspa.com/news/2010/mar/0...eets-ar-47966/ (http://www2.wspa.com/news/2010/mar/01/9/dangerous-streets-ar-47966/)

Someone posted this link on the second page of the Carolina thread. I've been there before also, and it's not a great neighborhood. Houses across the street are boarded up, etc. It's too bad they didn't build the school in a better area, especially because I hear the Virginia campus is in a much better neighborhood. There is some discussion about this over in the Carolina thread.

I hear the Virginia campus wait list moves a lot in mid/late May due to there being 2 MD schools nearby, and May 15 being the deadline for MD applicants to commit to a school. Hold tight & believe! :)
