aug class is competitive to get into but if you apply early with high stats (cgpa, sgpa, and mcat) you should be fine :)

Maybeleen

you mean the usual stats right? 3.0+ cgpa, 3.0+ sgpa, avg. 27 mcat?

hello

Im close to graduating from Texas Tech University with a B.S. in Cell and Molecular Biology w/ a minor in Chemistry.

Im gonna graduate a good gpa. A 3.28 with the amcas calculation. I had several retakes, really screwed up on the college courses I took while still in highschool, had a 1.7, glad thats behind me lol.

25s mcat

3.14 science gpa

decent lor's

Good amount of exc's, I dont know how much emphasis in put on these, but...

Alpha Kappa Psi – Pledge Class Vice President of Finance
College Republicans of Texas Tech
Young Conservatives of Texas
Double T Health Service Corps
Beta Beta Beta
Alpha Epsilon Delta – Premed honors society
Health Occupations Students of America

and of course volunteer experience in an E.R.

Im extremely stressed about med school admissions, medicine is my passion and I don't have any alternative career plans. any help would be great.

Thanks Richard. How early should I apply? Also do you know if I will be interviewed in my state or would I have to travel to the campus? Timeline wise I wanted to know.

Here are my stats. I was wondering what my chances were. I am currently an undergrad Senior majoring in Biological Sciences

GPA = 2.85 (i might be able to bring it up to roughly 2.9ish or maybe a little higher by the time I finish my last year)
MCAT. 24
Great LOR's
Campus Employment/involvement
Hospital Employment/experience
volunteering experience
research experience
2 Honor Societies
Great Essay
Physician Shadowing

How does it look?

Richardh
11-08-2010, 10:45 PM
you should submit the application before the end of this year. most of the time, there will be alumni graduates practicing or residents doing rotations in your state (if you're living for instance CA, NJ, NY, etc.) so you won't have to travel. but there are always exceptions so be sure to be ready to travel (the adcom will try to make the best accommodations for you).

Richardh
11-08-2010, 10:45 PM
what is your sgpa cravechocolate?

ribozyme
11-10-2010, 12:14 AM
will an MCAT save your application. I have good EC's such as working with a doctor at a homeless shelter but my GPA is much lower than I hoped it would be. It is a 2.7 when i thought I was going to be a 3.0. I am freaking out because I think i have just killed my chances at St.George's. Would a MCAT of a 30 save me. Would I still have a chance with a 25?

cravechocolate
11-10-2010, 11:21 PM
my science gpa is 2.5. why does this matter?

Richardh
11-11-2010, 11:16 PM
your sgpa matters because adcom carefully takes a look at this especially if you're a bio major. since your science gpa is not high with the mcat not too good you might be offered foundations or mph. best thing would be then to retake the mcat or get your gpa to 3.0. consider smp or post-bac too.

Richardh
11-11-2010, 11:19 PM
extracurriculars are not really significant during the admission process. after interviews, extracurriculars might be taken into account to make the final decision. but up to the interview or getting an interview really depends on your gpa and mcat. ribozyme-get a high mcat and improve your gpa to 3.0 range.

cravechocolate
11-13-2010, 07:16 PM
What is foundations? I know MPH. Can I request foundations during the app cycle?

Richardh
11-14-2010, 10:02 PM
foundations is an one semester program. If you achieve a 3.2 GPA then you get to matriculate into the school of medicine. foundation students are asked to take anatomy, neurophys, biochem, and other bio classes. you can't apply directly to the foundations program. instead of acceptance for med school, adcom will offer you foundations.

Maybeleen
11-16-2010, 01:00 PM
ya that's one of the best things about foundations. gurantee spot for medical school. well same thing can be said for the pre-med program. lot of times ppl confuse between foundations and premed.

MandMs
11-21-2010, 09:58 PM
is the mandatory essay the same topic and how much time do I have?

Richardh
11-24-2010, 09:30 PM
same topic. check the interview feedback on sdn. some of the recent interviewees posted what they thought of the essay. you usually get 10 min but anything can go. as in you will more likely be given more time but 10 min is what you should think of.

there is it called IEA and the requirements are as follows:
1) a 4.0 in term 1 or
2) a 3.5 GPA after term 1 up to 3rd year (although that is in the process of changing/or has changed this term

Your GPA (especially sGPA) and MCAT are way low for SGU, I would suggest retaking the MCAT and maybe some more science classes to bring up your GPA.

Good luck

Maybeleen

Strong chance for Aug. If you're worried about your retake MCAT being lower than the first, don't sweat it. The adcom will look at your higher score. However they might ask you during the interview what happened.

3.8 GPA + 26M (10-6-10)

what bothers me is that they said that they have put me in the "English Enhancement Program" ...what the hell is that? Just because I got a 6 on verbal?

I don't even know what it is or how it works?

They just proved to me that all they care about is to make money out of their students. That's sad.

Maybeleen

Not sure if English Enhancement Program is the same as Academic Enhancement Program (AEP)? If it is then AEP is basically the following provided by the Department of Educational Services at SGU:

"SGU’s Academic Enhancement Program (AEP) is a retention initiative implemented in the Schools of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. The Committee on Admissions believes that a student will be successful in their academic endeavor at SGU but have also determined that the student may benefit through enrollment in AEP; it simply provides the student with additional guidance and resources during their first year of medical school. Students are placed into the program for a variety of reasons, the most common of which are low undergraduate GPA, low MCAT scores, being out of school for an extended period of time prior to beginning medical school, coming from a non-US education system, or speaking English as a second language. The Committee feels that these students are capable of handling the rigors of medical school but may need more guidance in developing a successful approach to managing the workload.

Placement in the AEP is for Terms One and Two in Medicine or Veterinary Medicine. The AEP is NOT a reduced-load program or a decelerated program; it is for Terms 1 and 2. The student is enrolled in the regular, full academic program in medical school, but is mandated to participate in additional learning activities. Most students in AEP traditionally perform just as well (if not better) than their non-AEP counterparts. In fact, students frequently ask to be placed in the program once they learn of the benefits it provides.

Shortly after Academic Orientation in Grenada, AEP students will attend an AEP Orientation meeting where details regarding the program are outlined. Students are required to attend this orientation and to occasionally meet with their AEP Coordinator (after the first unified quiz, after mid-term exams, etc.) in the Department of Educational Services (DES). These meetings give you the opportunity to discuss the approach to your studies, discuss your perspective on your performance on exams and on that basis, to tweak your tailored AEP requirements, if needed.

AEP Students are required to attend 1 closed AEP review session (restricted to AEP students only - either Anatomy or Biochemistry) AND one regular DES review session (open to all students) per week. Students can attend more if they choose but one AEP and one DES are mandatory; attendance is tracked by DES for the Dean of Students Office. AEP review sessions are “closed” to other students to keep the groups small while DES review groups are open to all students. All review groups are peer-facilitated by senior students. Currently, in Spring ’09, there are 134 AEP / DES review groups running that meet weekly so there are lots of resources!

DES also offers a Learning Strategies program for advice on time management, test-taking strategies, study methods, etc; a Specialized English Language Program for enhancing communication for the medical professions; small group tutorials, and more. All students, AEP and non-AEP, are welcome to take advantage of any of these resources.

The IAP (Individualized Advancement Program), which is completely separate from the AEP, is a second retention initiative in the Schools of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. This program allows existing students to reduce their courseload by taking 2 terms to complete 1 term of coursework, while utilizing resources in DES to refine studying techniques, time management, and test-taking skills."

Hi All,

I recently confirmed my acceptance to SGU and I'm stoked. I think I got into the dual MD/MPH program as well which is a dream come true.

Here are my stats for those asking:

sGPA: 3.26
cGPA: 3.56
MCAT: 30 (verbal 11, bio 10, physical 9)

Graduated with a BA in Global Development Studies (international relations) from UC Berkeley. Experience volunteering/traveling abroad, two years work in public health.

The man who interviewed me in my home-town of Fresno told me he'd recommend me because I was qualified and had a professional demeanor.

I'll be posting a thread for housing! Maybe it's not necessary but I figure why not get the ball rolling?

Thanks y'all. Looking forward to meeting everyone in the fall!

Jenna

If a person gets accepted for the August class is it possible to postpone enrolling until January?

StallionSupreme

if you want to postpone, they make you withdraw your app and compare it with the applicants of the new semester. I got in for january 2011 and asked them to consider me for august 2011. they just asked me for a transcript with my degree on it to be sent and they got back to me after a re-review from the committee. if things go as planned, i will be there in august! :D

Sorry for the late response! I hope your interview went well :)

My interview (03/07) went well...i think. My interview was at 2pm at a local restaurant. I went to the restaurant at 1:55pm and the waiter took me to the doc in the back room. He was caught off guard that i showed up early (like 2mins lol). He immediately shook my hand and took me to another part of the restaurant to do my essay. He gave me 10mins and I took up all of the given space. I then took it back to him and we moved to somewhere quieter. He then told me 25% of my interview was done and he said the remaining 75% of the interview consists of SGU questions, his own questions, and any questions that i had.

He then began asking questions like why medicine, why sgu, explain ur transcript, are u a hard worker, are u okay with being an fmg, tell me about ur research, why KBT program. It was kinda weird because i was answering these question by pouring myself to hiim but he seemed a little distracted (asking the waiter for some iced tea and etc.)...this kinda made me uncomfortable. At the end of my interview he asked me if i was going back home or hanging out in chicago and i said ill have to go home for a parasitology exam..he kinda smirked and said "lucky you!" That was it!! not more than 20mins of talking. it was too laidback for my taste.

I then emailed him that evening writing a thank you note. He replied back saying "It was my pleasure." I dont know how to make of the interview i just described above....

here are my stats: I was sorta mistaken in my previous post about my stats...

cGPA: 3.06
sGPA: 3.24
MCAT1: 28M
MCAT2: 27Q
2yrs of research, lots of ER volunteering, lots of abroad medical experiences....i applied to KBTGSP.

my status on the website just changed to "final review" on 03/24...its been 3 weeks now. im sooooooooooo anxious!

I interviewed on March 12th and I just got in yesterday. I was pretty worried as well because my MCAT score is low, but I guess they valued all the other parts of my app. These are my stats in case they give you a rough idea:

MCAT: 24
sGPA: 3.7
cGPA: 3.7

Just got accepted for August 2011 as well! Congratulations to everyone who has been accepted so far!

For those who are still waiting to hear from the school, I interviewed February 24th and just heard news today (4/11, over 6 weeks later). I had previously been under the impression that people were hearing within a few weeks, but I think it varies based on when you interview compared with when the committee meets.

Good luck, all! :luck:

Hey there peeps,

I just got an email saying

"I am writing to keep you apprised of the status of your application. Please be advised that, after evaluation of your interview and academic record, the Committee on Admission has designated your application as competitive for the class of 2011. A competitive application status is not an acceptance, nor is it a rejection. It is an indication that you are part of a very competitive pool of applicants who will remain under consideration during the Committee on Admissions on-going review process."

What do they mean by on-going review process...does this mean ive been reviewed and they are gonna re-review me? I interviewed on March 7th.

Im starting to be extremely anxious!!

Please help me.

That’s interesting. I’ve not heard of anyone having a second interview, but I guess it happens if you’ve been invited for one. I wonder what else they could possibly ask (from what I've read, the interview questions are pretty standard and seem to come from a list sent from SGU to your interviewer). Are they at least able to set you up with someone relatively close to home?

What do they mean by on-going review process...does this mean ive been reviewed and they are gonna re-review me? I interviewed on March 7th.

Sounds like they will review you again the next time they meet. I know it sucks because it means you need to wait longer, but it also means they liked you enough to want to take a second look. Hang in there!

I have gained acceptance into the 2011 August class, but I am still debating whether to go!! I am married, so my partner would have to stay in the States to work. The loan amounts seem astronomical, and I would be loaning out 100% of expenses plus a little extra to support my house, mortgage and life here. I haven't gotten in anywhere else in the States. Any advice??

I'm hoping that my self-belief and reasoning speed will be highly improved by the academic journey at SGU. I just can't believe its going to be 300k. I feel like I am bribing the system to let me in. Whatever we are special just like the mainland docs. Are people at SGU generally more interesting as people than the ones on the mainland...You know since they all partied more in undergrad.
Don't feel like that, some of us really aren't bribing the system to let us in; the system has let us down because of its chokehold on supply. A while back, the AMA thought we were gonna have a huge doctor surplus, and that docs will be forced to indentured servitude driving taxis (not that they aren't already enslaved in other forms), so they kept a bottleneck on med school seats. They're STILL doing that now, in spite of the looming doctor shortage. To top it all off, they've got some wild affirmative action policies that make life very hard for students of specific ethnicities.
On the other subject, I am unsure whether knowing how to get wasted constitutes an "interesting" demeanor, but I'm sure that SGU people will have their unique talents to bring.

You might be on the waitlist or on "hold." I don't know whether SGU does hold-lists or not, but that's basically a way for schools to ration their acceptances for higher-scoring students until May 15th rolls around. Since you interviewed in March (which is when applications start to pile in), it's a remote possibility that the committee hasn't even gotten around to reviewing your application yet. But overall, I'd stake my bet on either the waitlist or a "hold" category. If you're decently competitive (3.0+, 28+ MCAT) then you're definitely just not reviewed yet. Best of luck to you :).

I was accepted in the August 2011 class! I heard back 4 days after my interview. I was really surprised. From reading everyones comments, it sounds like SGU is more competitive to get into than I thought. I was really thinking about not attending though, taking a year off and reapplying to D.O schools because that's what I wanted to begin with (love D.O) but I'm having a hard time with the thought of a year off and putting all this off. I'm in the top 25% of DMU's waitlist, so I'm waiting until july 1st to see if it moves at all. If not, SGU may be the way for me to go.

My stats are:
Majored in biomolecular sciences and minor in chemistry
MCAT 22Q
CGPA 3.90
SGPA 3.98
officer and president of pre med club and bio club for 3 years
TONS of shadowing, hospital employment, clinic work, independent research, clinic programs through other medical schools etc.

Major: Biology
Minor: Chemistry, Anthropology, History
cGPA: 3.3
sGPA:3.2
MCAT: 22
Lab work, hours and hours of volunteering, shadowing, founder of a club at my school with 50+ members (not sure if these extracurriculars even matter) also plenty of LOR

I was just accepted into the January 2012 class and waitlisted to the August 2011 class because I applied too late and the class is already full. According to the acceptance letter, I am #46 on the waiting list for August 2011. Do I have any chance of getting off the waiting list or is 46th on line too far down. I don't know how much movement a foreign waiting list will get. I know being #46 for a US medical school is a guranteed rejection.

Thanks.

Thnx that kinda sux to hear i applied in early may and havent heard anything back yet about interview or anything, i read on previous years post that ppl all the way down to 50 on the waitlist got added in near the last week before school started so maybe you still got a good chance at getting in to august class. good luck man.
btw whats ur major?

06-09-2011, 05:36 AM
Im a biology major...graduated in May 2010 and have been doing research in an ivy league institution since. Feel like that kind of helped me.

Hope you hear some good news soon. The january class is honestly pointless because it essentially is the same as starting in august. Its not like we can start our residency before anyone else. It just means instead of taking a year off before school, were taking 5 months before and 7 months after. Pointless. Ill probably defer until august 2012.

Goodluck!

Hey guys

I just got accepted for August 2011 class. Its almost coming to start in few weeks or rather days. Scaryyy ...

I am an international student in US (Baltimore) from India (New Delhi). So I have to contact the Grenada embassy for visa and stuff. Anyone has had experience with that? Also, I got to email university my financial docs and housing forms.

Please do let me know if there is anything else that I must do urgently.

Are most of you guys staying on campus? For two terms or just one? ... I have no pets...

Looking forward to meet you guys ... :)

Congrats all!!!
