I'm doing my internship year in Internal medicine. I'm not sure if Internal Medicine is my thing. But since I'm a IMG I thought that I would not get anything else so i chose IM. But I some people that are IMG's and have gotten other good residencies.
I'm wondering if you guys have ever heard of anybody that started off in internal medicine and then has switched to radiology. And if so, how did they do it?
I'm also wondering if I tried to get out of my IM program and into the Radiology program in my hospital, would it cause too much of problem with the program directors and me?
I'm sorry but perhaps this is the wrong forum to post this, but I'm just trying to weight my options.
Thanks

Radiology might be a bit of a reach since it is so competetive, but a lot of transferring into different programs is just luck. I know one 2nd yr neuro resident at my school (who is an IMG) transferred from medicine after his first year. His in was that he did a rotation in neuro at my school, got to know the PD pretty well, and there happened to be an opening this year since someone dropped out. So if you really want to do it, you can always try to do a rotation at somewhere that you know has an opening, but I'd still say your chances of suceeding are going to be pretty low unless you are an exceptional IMG. A lot of medicine people (actually a lot of internists who have completed their residency but find that they would rather stare at a screen all day) actually go into nuclear medicine, that's certainly one option. Not much difference between looking at a bone scan or myoview and a film or ultrasound if you ask me. Nuclear medicine is getting more competetive, but is no where near the level of radiology yet.
