Noterize was one of the first note-taking apps for the Apple iPad and it remains the most popular choice for college students, medical students and professionals. Recently featured on TV by Apple in the 'iPad is Iconic' commercial, Noterize has gathered a large following in several of the premier medical schools in the country. It is also used extensively in the TV & film production industry, as well as by a number of investment banks.

So what can you do with Noterize that sets it apart from the competition, or even from pen and paper? Imagine this...

Instead of printing out inch-thick stacks of lecture notes the night before class (if they're even available or finalized by that point), you just bring your iPad and download the latest version of the notes from Blackboard through the app's built-in web browser.

PDF and PowerPoint forms of lecture notes are both compatible, as are textbooks in PDF form.

You can WRITE & DRAW directly on the lecture notes in freehand, meaning those diagrams that are impossible to create quickly on a computer are a breeze to jot down. Med School = Diagram Drawing 101.

Freehand highlighting means that (unlike other PDF programs) you can highlight text that is really in image form. This is a must for medical school. All lectures include images that have labels (ion channels, cell types, muscle groups, etc) but most of the time the labels are actually part of an IMAGE rather than being TEXT themselves. Only Noterize allows you to highlight these labels despite them not being real text.

You can record "page-specific audio". What does this mean? You tap the record button at the start of the lecture and each time you move to the next slide, Noterize automatically assigns the audio appropriately. This means that when you go back to review slide 36 of 103, you can immediately access the 20 seconds of audio that was relevant to that slide ONLY. GREAT for revising!

Easily add text boxes and stickie notes to your slides to make points stand out. This is one of the most-loved features of Noterize.

If you don't quite understand something in the lecture notes (e.g. an acid-base imbalance), you can open the in-app web browser, find some information on UpToDate or Wikipedia, then take a WebSnap of the page and add it directly into your notes! You can then go ahead and resize, reposition, highlight or draw on the WebSnap. No other note-taking app lets you so easily SUPPLEMENT what your school gives you with your own research.

Noterize is a very exciting new way for students to learn, but when we were creating this application we thought it was highly important to foster cooperation and collaboration between students. This is why we built a wide array of sharing mechanisms directly into the app...

Suppose your friend Alex needs to brush up on cardiac physiology but he really doesn't understand the mechanism of pacemaker cells -- you pull up your annotated diagram of pacemaker cell membrane potentials and tap the 'Share' button, and in just a few seconds the RELEVANT slides are in his email, sent to him via Facebook/Twitter, or in a communal class Dropbox or Box.net account (to name just a few).

If you're cramming for an exam with a group of your peers, plug your iPad into a TV or projector using the VGA port to have your notes projected onto the big screen.

Have a read of the glowing reviews on our App Store page (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/noterize/id364906681?mt=8) written by the huge number of medical, dental, veterinary, nursing, and PA students who love Noterize and use it on a daily basis to help them with their studies. We hope you decide to give Noterize a try, but most of all we hope you all find your future careers in healthcare to be as fulfilling personally as they are important to society. Good luck!

So, lately, I've been using another (unnamed) program (actually, two) to handle all of my in-class note taking needs. This seems like it actually does a lot more (highlighting images, stickies, wiki, UpToDate, etc!) and would be awesome. What I really need, though, is something that allows me to annotate PPTs directly _and_ see the annotations the lecturers have put in. Would Noterize enable me to do that?

Thanks!

Yes - Noterize is the ONLY app on the App Store that allows users to annotate directly on top of PowerPoint files. This is one of the features that makes Noterize stand out for students against other products.

I don't currently have an iPad, but am planning on getting one for when I start medical school in the fall. Noterize is the first app I plan to buy because I really like the fact that it allows me to annotate PPTs without having to print them out. It will save time, paper, and of course my back from giving out from all of the extra things I would have to carry around otherwise

I have an iPad, and am still learning of all the study tools available with it. I have read good things about Noterize and hope to try it.

Edite: wow the search tool looks amazing! I need to figure out what stylus to get...

I am currently considering an iPad, and this seems like the way to go as far as note taking apps. I really like that you can write directly on the slides, rather than in the margins. Can you attach audio to the files?

Yes - audio can be added to the slides.

What is even better, though, is that if you record a whole lecture Noterize will automatically split the audio up into segments corresponding to each slide. That way, if you're revising an 80 slide lecture and you only want to hear what was said about slide 52, you can immediately access just that part of the audio!

This is what people mean when they say study smart, not hard.

This looks like an amazing app. I'm hoping to get an Ipad before starting med school and would LOVE the ability to write directly on the pdfs. It's the one reason that I still like printing out slides, but would like to save trees and have all my notes in 1 convenient location.

Here's a great example from the latest Apple TV commercial demonstrating how Noterize lets you write naturally on your documents.

For audio that you record and attach to slides or notes, how is this organized when you sync your iPad? Can you access the audio later outside of Noterize? Does it do any automated naming of the audio to give you a context specific designation or is that something you have to do?

Would any stylus work for this, is there one you recommend?

Does this work like Mendely where you can access your account from any device (i.e. laptop, iPad or iPhone)?

Thanks!

Audio is included when you export your documents via iTunes File Sharing. The audio is named according to page or slide number so you can still always find the right recording. Audio can be played in Quicktime, iTunes, or your preferred player.

Any stylus will be compatible with Noterize, however we have partnered with TenOneDesign to bring our users a 15% discount on the Pogo Sketch. (http://tenonedesign.com/sketch.php) This offer is redeemable from within the app.

There is no sign-up or account required to use Noterize. To access your documents from multiple devices we recommend utilizing the built-in Google Docs, Dropbox, or Box.net integration.

Great! It's neat that one can annotate on the PPT slides. This is exactly what I was looking for.

I really like that I can write on the my "slides" as though I were writing on paper!! That is definitely motivation to buy an iPad stat!

I think the greatest appeal to me is the ability to have a central 'space' where all your ppt's/pdf's can have annotations and you can go out onto the internet' due further research and include this back into your original files.

I totally agree, and the fact the app is only 3.99 (very reasonable price)
I didn't think I would cave in and buy an ipad but this app makes we want to go ahead and do so.

Now after annotating the slides is there a way to export the modified slide into let's say flashcards (albeit large ones)?

If annotations are made on a powerpoint via Noterize, will those annotations carry over if the file is transferred to a laptop?

I have been using Noterize since the second month of Med School - it is by far the best app for any medical student, and I've evangelized a bunch of my classmates to either get Noterize, or buy an iPad so they COULD get Noterize.

There are a few minor problems that I've emailed the developer about but have not heard back - for some reason when you go to a new page, sometimes the first text box you create on the page will "crash" so you have to create a second one - sort of delays you another few seconds while you open a new text box which can be REALLY frustrating (especially w/ a fast-talking teacher). It used to happen EVERY time, but now it's sporatic, so hopefully that means it's being addressed. Also, I usually convert powerpoints to PDF on my computer before loading into Noterize b/c converting straight from powerpoint will sometimes give you odd-looking slides (especially if the professor designed their own diagram by drawing circles and arrows and boxes - this happens in Keynote too, so it's not specific to Noterize). Lastly, there's no way to bulk-offload your notes, say when you're done w/ a module and don't need to hog up the space on your iPad (but you definitely don't want to just delete the old stuff). To go through and individually output 60 powerpoints one-by-one can be really tedious.

Overall though it is the single most used app on my iPad and is the first one I recommend to anyone that asks. If they could fix those few problems I'd give it 5/5 stars.

This app looks great! I love that you can import PDFs and PPTs and actually "write" on them! And being able to share them with others sounds really useful for collaborative efforts.

Is there any limit to the number of documents you can import to Noterize? Thanks!

The best thing I've seen so far with Noterize is the ability to insert lined "paper" between slides. I'd like to use noterize to take notes in lectures but then when I'm at home and reading other sources I want to write additional and more indepth notes. This program seems like it will be the perfect resource for that. Plus, no more carrying large binders of paper because I haven't liked the computer note-taking programs I've used in the past! I'm planning on getting an iPad for residency and this program looks amazing! I can't wait to try it.

My favorite thing is that you can record the lecture and it automatically saves the recording to each specific page!!!!

I really like what I'm reading here. I went and tried this out on a friend's iPad, and have only one complaint.

My professors provide powerpoints with paragraphs of text in the annotation box (aka presentor's notes, etc) that you see below the slide when you are flipping through slides as if to edit them. This information is crucial for me to have available, yet when I add powerpoints to noterize this is not presented. Rather, only the slides are presented, and not the notes below.

Is there any way around this? I know I could "print" the powerpoint to a PDF driver in the form that shows notes below, then import as a PDF. However, this is unacceptable for two reasons: 1.) Loss of quality for images in the slide that I might want to zoom in and see fine detail, and 2.) I want to export these files back to my PC running Windows 7 which indexes all the text in PPT files for me to do a generic search of all my files (but does not index text in PDFs)

Am I missing something, or is there no way to do what I am hoping? Are there any plans to add this functionality?

Thanks!
