Looking at my stats. My cum GPA is 3.82 sGPA 3.78 and my MCAT score is 23R. I'm an NJ resident. I really more than any other school want to get in umdnj-som. Does anyone from previous classes have an idea if i have a chance for an interview? I'm planning to retake the MCAT in Sept..hoping to increase my score, do you think I should seriously consider retaking it. Or since I've taken the exam three times already with no improvement, should i stick to the score I have?

Hey! I am kinda in the same boat as you. I took the mcat twice got a 22Q then a 24O. My gpa is a 3.76, sGPA is a 3.70. So my chances seem slim as qwell. I am preparing to take it a thrid time. u got a 23 three times? i dunno they usually say taking the exam three times is max. after that they start averaging ur scores, which sucks.I hate this exam....grrrrrrr

For the essay, I see two prompts and they say to limit the length to one page. Is it one page for each prompt? Or one page for both combined?

To me it sounded like they wanted 1 essay answering both questions limited to one page. That's what I did and was accepted, but I don't think it really matters that much.

I don't think they need even a half a page of why I want to be a DO. That is a lot.

Does this school send out a secondary complete e-mail notification or should I just call?

just wondering what people think about using a few of the same phrases or sentences in my personal statement & secondary. my personal statement basically addressed why I want to be a DO and why it fits into my goals. I felt the same way, hence my comments above. I felt like I touched a lot on my goals in my PS. I would say go ahead and be redundant if you have to, give them what they want. It does not tell you NOT to repeat information. ;)

To follow up on my above comments - all of that information I was looking for is in the last two pages of the application. Somehow the first file I downloaded had those pages missing. I re-downloaded and found them. Glad I did not end up calling! :D

I believe only the allopathic school is in Newark (The bad part of town). I'm pretty sure the Osteopathic school is in Stratford, which I know very little about. Probably a suburb.

The Osteopathic school is NOT in a bad part of town, and there are no barbed wires anywhere. I think someone was pulling your chain.

The town of Stratford, while not Picturesque is a little town in a line of little towns along Route 30 in South Jersey. If you get away from the main roads, there are tree lined streets and quiet neighborhoods. While you are a stone's throw away from Camden City, a very dangerous city, Stratford is not like that at all.

The school is safe, but like anywhere else in the world, you have to be vigilant with your property and yourself. To give you an idea, the UMDNJ police call the stratford campus, "The Country Club". Especially where you compare it to Newark (which is about 90 minutes north without traffic)

I think they combine your GPA and MCAT scores to reach a certain number. :meanie: No clue about the min Mcat though....

In staters probably have a different criteria....

I personally know people that have been accepted and are currently attending or just recently graduated with a lower score than that so I really don't think there is a hard and fast 'cut-off' so to speak; however, I think your chances of admission, even with a 24, are severely diminished barring some amazing circumstance, letter or rec, etc.

If we don't have a pre med committee letter, we need letters from (and I quote from the secondary app) "two science faculty members."

Technically, I do have two science faculty letters. One is from my ochem prof and another is from a microbiology prof I did research under. For the research letter, I did get school credit for part of the duration of research.

I'll probably give them a call to check, but do any of you think they will accept this?

I had similar worries as I had several letters from docs, 1 M.D, 1 DO who went to PCOM, and one DO that graduated from UMDNJ SOM. I also had a letter from my graduate school advisor/professor but not two science faculty letters...I'm nontraditional and have been out of school working long enough that I believe they may have made an exception due to my clinical background. I really think that those two letters, the o-chem and micro professor will count perfectly for your two science professors. The fact that you did research under one is a bonus....

Today I had the pleasure of talking to Ms. Watkins who had a question about my application. She said that although the committee has not met yet she believes they'll be calling me in a few weeks for an interview....I'm pumped and hopeful as this is my number one school choice...So, my point is that if the rest of your application is largely solid, those letters are great....

Just call up the school. Everyone is nice there and they were very helpful when I called to check up on stuff. I mean, you are sending stuff in through the mail. Call and make sure it didn't get lost along the way.

I don't think the SOM releases these numbers, but for the allopathic schools, about 10 OOS students matriculate in classes of about 175. This is out of 2500 OOS applicants, so the answer is - really really low.

The good thing about UMDNJ schools are that they allow in state tuition after one year, so it ends up being a deal if you do get accepted.

Thats funny. I had called after reading this post. The lady that answered was staring at my app at that moment and sent me an email 10 minutes later confirming I was complete.

I'd imagine a lot of out-of-state students who are accepted don't end up matriculating compared to in-state students. Therefore, that number is deceiving and the amount of OOS acceptances is probably higher than you think.

Thank you for linking this. I was looking for it earlier. New Jersey is a pretty good state when it comes to medical schools. Plenty of options, especially now that Cooper is opening this year. :)

I think it went really well! Everyone there was so nice and helpful and supportive.. the woman I interviewed with was very laid back and friendly and easy to converse with.. The interview essentially felt like a 30 minute conversation rather than a question-probing session with an interviewer.. I had a good feeling about it after it was over :) Feelings can be wrong though, so I don't want to get my hopes up too high! But this is definitely my first choice, so I'm hoping all went as well as I think it did!

You and the other person below you. Stop being crazy. Any time during October is awesome for an interview for any school. This will not negatively affect your chances. Don't sweat it.

Cool, PM me if you want advice on the area or anything. The schools not to far from my house. The acceptance rate is pretty high but that is mainly for IS applicants. OSS is less but they don't grant so many of those interviews so your chances aren't horrible.

This is my top choice ....waiting for accomas verification and mcat scores ...ahhh getting super nervous ....

Wahoo! Got called today to schedule an interview for next Tuesday the 13th.

I saw some people asking about timing from secondary to interview so i'll tell what happened to me. First of all, i'm NJ resident with a 31 and 3.5. My application was complete today and I got the call today for the interview . However, I submitted my secondary maybe 2 weeks ago but completely forgot that AACOMAS doesn't send secondaries so I sent them yesterday through interfolio :laugh:

I think this proves that while secondaries are important, most schools have some idea if they want you based on GPA/MCAT alone (unfortunately that's the case for my allopathic experience).

Anyway, super pumped about this school. I have heard great things about it.

I am OOS and so when I got a phone call from a NJ number today I got real excited, could this be an interview!!! BUT it was only my insurance company telling me I have a payment due next week. Talk about a let down.

So, I was driving down to UMDNJ-SOM this morning to meet with the director of admissions to get some advice on how to better myself as an applicant. It's about an hour and fourty-five minute drive from my house to the school...About halfway through the trip, I get a call from the admissions office, offering me an interview! My reaction was literally :soexcited:!

SO excited for the interview at my top choice school! Scheduled it for 9/29 at 2:00 pm. See you guys then! Good luck everyone!

My reaction was literally :soexcited:!

Is this a normal/typical thing you can do at schools (meet with admissions during app season to get tips)? If so did you just call and make an appointment or something like that? Can OOS do this as well? Thanks.

Not sure about other schools, but I do know that if you wanted to go over your application, and where you might be weak, admissions at UMDNJ will be more than happy to go over it with you. It's good because they put a face to the application, and tell you specifically what you can do to have a better application. You can call or email them to schedule one, doesn't matter if it's in-state or OOS.

Sure! I think it went pretty well thanks... everyone was very friendly and nice and helpful.. and the woman I interviewed with was really approachable and easy to converse with... come to think of it, the whole interview felt more like a conversation than a rigid question and answer session.. a large portion of it involved her asking me if I had any questions about UMDNJ-SOM.. and I had a few prepared, but once I was done with those she prompted me to ask questions about the community and other relevant things, so that kind of opened the floor to new topics to talk about.. Overall, very stress free one-on-one interview style, followed by a tour of the campus at 12 and a complimentary lunch.. fingers crossed that it actually went as well as I think it did!

I have no idea. I wouldn't completely freak out..they probably have a good amount of people to call. If I don't hear anything by like...5pm, I'll probably call. They're so nice over in admissions I don't think they'd mind.

Could any current students shed light on OOS tuition? I read that you could get instate fairly quickly (1 year), but it may have been changed so that you have to be OOS for all four years????

That being said - I'm applying to MD/DO and this place is my second choice after my first choice long shot school so I am pumped!!!!

Got a call today just after 4.

Interview was very conversational, it is a one on one interview with a faculty member. My interviewer only ended up asking 2 questions and the interview was more a discussion of my motivations and background. The interviewer answered my questions and sold the school well. Easy, very low stress. Just know your AMCAS, aka know what you have done.

They also tell you if you received a scholarship in the phone call, so you don't need to wait for your letter package.

To answer some questions as I am familiar with admissions at SOM. The wait list isn't ranked till end of January ish. Also- the only way to move up the waitlist is if your numbers change ..ie- MCAT/GPA. LOI/new lors/emails dont mean anything in terms of helping you get off the wait list. Generally the consensus is if you dont get a call Friday, you are waitlisted. If you are interviewing, it means they like you so no one really gets rejected post interview.

Also , keep in mind that a lot of people come of off the waitlist later in the season. So do not become discouraged.

when you receive your packets, dont delay on turning them in. some of the paperwork can take a while, particular the health packets. get all your shots up to date and physical good to go.

I hope your interview is early - in the group I interviewed with, this one girl had to wait until 3:30 to interview! And she arrived at 11! :scared:

Hey, I'm sorry to hear about the BS section. I think it would be wise to hold off on applying this cycle. Most schools have a cut-off of anything under 7 on the MCAT so i think you should re-test and apply as a stronger candidate next year. Good luck!

i was wondering if i had a semi-decent chance or no chance at all for getting an interview/potential acceptance here. its my first choice for medical school. I already submitted my secondary but havent heard anything as yet .. i actually applied last year and did not get in (I was really late in the application cycle and unfortunately my mcat was pretty terrible.. not that its that great now)

i think i have okay extra curriculars, but im worried about my gpa and mcat score

cumm GPA: 3.6
sGPA: 3.37
MCAT: 26P (7V 10B 9P)

i volunteer at an osteopathic hospital.. currently im working on my masters and also working in a lab. i also have a primary authorship publication that was published in 2010

I would say if you are a NJ resident, definitely apply, but apply now. It is getting to be pretty late in the cycle, but it's not terribly late as of yet. If you are out of state, it's more questionable.

make sure you call and they have it ..this isnt the first time its happened. .I know 2 people personally whose applications were lost and led to a lot of hassles. They are human it happens so its better to know whats going on.

It was not 10 minutes but I would say more 20 minutes. It was definitely shorter than the other people's before mine though. Was your interview right before lunch or later in the afternoon? Maybe your interviewer was hungry or had to go to a meeting or something afterwards?

I can't remember too many questions, because it was really more based on questions that stemmed from our conversation. But I do remember being asked to describe a leadership position. Surprisingly I was not asked "Why DO?" or "Why medicine?" but I suppose my personal statement and secondary covered the answers to those. At the end, he asked if I had any questions for him about UMDNJ.

You should call again and ask to speak directly to Ms. Watkins. The admissions office is usually very helpful, and she will definitely be able to tell you the status of your application. Make sure to not call during lunch time because they don't really pick up in those hours lol

did anyone get an interview recently? I'm wondering if there are still slots open within the next couple of months. I handed in my secondary at the end of October, but I think it got lost somewhere. I sent in another copy yesterday. At the open house, Paula told me to inform her as soon as I hand in the secondary to schedule an interview, based on my numbers.

really confused... did anybody hear back this round? 3rd friday was the 18th... tried calling admissions around 4:15 but nobody has been picking up. I know not every pre-med in the world uses this site but if someone was accepted fri or monday let us know so I can accept a potential wait list in my mind haha

i just joined so i could respond to your message! i have been reading this thread for a while and i am in the same situation. i did not get a call friday, monday or today. i called the admissions office around 10 am and i was told to wait for something in the mail and that it would come this week....so maybe you will have to wait for the mail too?

I'm thinking that probably means waitlist? I thought acceptances received calls. Unless they're just really busy or something around the holidays, but that is just me being a wishful thinker haha

Hi! Another SND'er called the admissions office Monday morning, and they told her that all calls had gone out on Friday. If anyone has received a letter please feel free to share. I haven't heard anything either, but I'm west coast. :(

after hearing about these separate phone calls to the admissions office we will probably have to wait for the mail since we didn't get calls friday...oh well, we all did our best to get into this school. besides, if it is a "waitlist" answer it is not a definitive "no" so there is still a chance. i wish you all the best of luck when you get your mail!

I forget when they make their decisions. If it's the third Friday of every month maybe you'll hear from them that day, but I wouldn't be surprised if you don't hear back 'til January.

I'd say you have pretty good chances though - stats look good, experience looks good, personality looks good. If you don't get in right away, there's always the waitlist. I know someone from California who was accepted off the waitlist last year but ended up staying in CA to attend Western. A few of my classmates are also from CA. Good luck!

Last year they increased tuition 18% for in-state and 21% for out-of-state. This year it was like 6% or so. I haven't heard anything about next year yet - it's probably too early.

I had letters from both MD and DO. If you can get one, I'm sure it'll help but I don't know how much it really matters. If the rest of your application is good, you have a good personality, and you make it clear you're educated on osteopathic medicine and want to be a DO, it probably won't be a big deal. Make sure to mention the open house during your interview. Good luck!

They're usually pretty good in admissions. Check that you have the right number and try again Monday. If you haven't already, you can try emailing Paula or April directly. Let me know if you still can't reach anyone; I'll go in there and see what's up.

I have a bunch of interviews coming up though, and I'm not entirely sure if Stratford is the place for me. That being said, I really loved the kindness and approachability of both the students and the faculty.

Will they be giving out calls on Monday for people who interviewed on December 7th though? I thought they only gave out calls on Monday for a particular set of interviewees that had interviewed on a different date and that it's not necessarily the norm for them to give out calls on both Friday and Monday. I was offered a scholarship here. My extracurricular activities are not spectacular and I have no research experience. I was just honest and straightforward with them about everything, even if it didn't really sound 'impressive.' Also, they are known to make about a third of their phone calls on the Monday after deliberations.

Institutional action on my application has really hindered my application, but I finally made it through by demonstrating that I'm a realistic, level-headed individual with clear achievable goals (I made it clear that I'm a pragmatist, not a dreamer). This year, I have gotten 4 MD interviews, and 4 DO interviews despite my institutional action, average LORs, and nothing impressive in terms of extracurricular activities. The key for me this time around was to demonstrate maturity, understanding, humility, etc.

Yes, I think I do remember you. You were also the first person in your family to graduate from college, right? That's really impressive. I wonder if you know who I was. I was the one who was nervous about the interview and stayed late afterwards because I was waiting for my ride when I think both of us spoke with a very friendly third year student at the school for some length of time. I really hope I get accepted to this school! Is there anything I can do at this point? I went out of my way to attend the open house(nearly 5 hour drive) and then I spoke with Paula regarding nonscience pre-reqs and the like a couple of times throughout the past few months. I'm amazed at how difficult it is to get in this year seeing as how I thought the average GPA and MCAT at this school was a 3.5 and a 27/28. I hope I didn't make any giant blunders.

Take comfort in the fact that a lot of people get off of the waitlist every year.And if you're high on the waitlist, then the odds are just that much more in your favor. What you can do is occasionally call to see where you are on the waitlist and continue to show interest.

I dont share my stats, just know that your entire application is taken into consideration. Don't lose hope!!! Rooting for you!!!

i interviewed yesterday. this school is really nice. facilities are nice, ppl are nice(so nice... so rediculously nice)... easiest going interview i've ever had and i left it feeling relatively good(i'm terrible at interviewing). while this is not my top choice school because of certain circumstances, i certainly can imagine why ppl would love this school.

Just interviewed today. The school is amazing as everyone is saying. I like the facilities and everything seems like its maintained. Surprisingly the facilities are much better well-kept than the ones at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and NJMS, which I'm guessing is due to age reasons. The only problem for me is that the town of Stratford itself is dead, but I guess that's because I'm a city boy. I wish the school was in an urban center like Philly or what not.

I was actually wondering about the third and fourth year rotations. One of the tour guides mentioned that there is a North Jersey Track for people from the area. Do you know if someone was participating in that track how often they'd have to come down for Stratford (for shelf exams I'm guessing)? And can you do all of your rotations in North Jersey? Also I know the whole rotation system is lottery based. So can students trade with eachother if they don't get the choice they want? Thanks.

The heart of downtown Philadelphia is 25 minutes via an awesome train right there next to the school.:)

During the 3rd year, you do just about all of the rotations at Newark, Patterson, or Jersey City. The only rotation that you cannot do up North is Geriatrics because of the Institute for Successful Aging. That is the only one that you do back in Stratford.

The other rotations are all done in North Jersey. Including your shelf exams. During your 4th year, all of your rotations except for Ethics, Pain/Palliative Medicine are done either in North Jersey for your required rotations or wherever you want for your electives.

As for trading rotations, after the lottery is done, you have about 1 week to find another student who is willing to trade locations and let the clinical coordinator know. It is very easy to do.

I'm in the same boat as you. Complete back in August and haven't heard a peep. Well that is not totally true...I wrote the admin office an update letter and they emailed me back to say it was added to my file. But other than that, not a word. I am not a NJ resident (I'm from NY). Hopefully I will hear something soon because I would really love an opportunity to interview here.

They meet on the 3rd Friday of the month......so calls should be going out between this Friday (1/20) and Monday (1/23).
