Ill get that in the day that opens up, I'll be down there next week to check it out, again. Honestly I'm just concentrated that I'm one the ones accepted. I'll do whatever it takes.

I am applying here too. I spent my early years in one of those KY/TN towns, but moved away in middle school--still a small town in the South though. I am really attracted to rural areas though

GPA: cGPA 3.3 sGPA 3.7 (I graduated with a 2.7 GPA in a non-science field in undergrad. All the science classes I have taken have been since graduation)
MCAT: 36R
5 years experience as respiratory therapist
would go right now if they let me in

Ahh, well you're still in a better GPA boat than me lol. I'm working on my master's hoping that and a good MCAT which I can't take until AUG will help. I'm also from Pikeville so maybe I'll get a little extra glance hah.

Just FYI. Pikeville is a little bit biased toward those in the Appalachia region and producing primary care docs for rural areas per its mission statement. Not saying you cannot get in not being out of that region but it's something to think about if you are trying to decide where to spend that hard earned secondary money.

I agree with James here. I'm from the Pacific Northwest, and I applied to this school in 2010/2011 cycle, and after I submitted my secondary, they emailed saying they received it, but are really biased towards applicants in their region. It was a waste of my money. Really know what schools you want to apply to and if they're biased! But hey, if it's your top choice, go for it :)

Thanks SNDO, I've been in the PNW all of my life and will keep this in mind when deciding which secondaries to complete. Did you hear anything else from them other than that they had received your application? Also, if you don't mind my asking, were your stats above avg/below avg/about avg?

My GPA is pretty low too! So I am right there with ya, where are you from? I plan to get my app in by Aug as soon as my physics grades from this summer post, and plan to take the MCAT Aug 12. So they should have everything from me Mid-September. I'm worried it's a little late, but I want to at least try this round. I know of people with average scores who applied in Jan and still got interviews so, we'll see.

When do you plan to apply?

Hey hey, small town central KY guy!

GPAs: 3.7c 3.56s
MCAT: Taking July 6th for the first time, averaging 26 at the moment!

Got my primary in as soon as the cycle opened up!

My list of DO schools is 1.) PSCOM and 2.) LMU-DCOM, which I just visited and thought was amazing. I'd still rather go to Pikeville though! :)

Also applying to UofL but am thinking that would be a stretch unless I improve to a 30 on the MCAT! Good luck everybody!

I'm submitting primary ASAP as I say everyday...but how many of the 79 seats are out of staters, the hard fact statistics are really helpful but I think regional preference is annoying because coming from Midwest, no schools shows me preference but can't complain, try my best and get into any school I apply too....

I feel I have good stats based on the average for recent class, but I'm from Midwest but I am open to working in a rural or small town in Midwest and currently interested in pursuing family medicine

I knew this school had a regional basis, but that isn't for just KY residents, correct? I'm from (and live in) TN, which I thought would be good enough.

Submitted my primary on the 10th (hoping for a short verification process)

cgpa 3.45/sgpa 3.24 [unoffical]. Low MCAT originally (but good enough for their 'average,' it seems) but retook it May 20th - scores out soon, but I didn't feel good about it :-(

Hey guys,

As a UPike Student, I'm obviously applying here

I talked to the admissions office, she said they've been in the process of getting everything changed over to KYCOM and that it would take a while before anyone would receive secondaries. This was about 2 weeks ago.

Can anyone tell me how much of a regional bias there is at Pikesville? As a CA resident will it be difficult? Thanks in advance.

If I remember correctly there is a very strong regional bias at this school. However, it has been a few years since I researched schools so that could have changed...but I don't think it has.

SavoirFaire
08-07-2011, 08:34 PM
For a regional bias, does that mean KY only, bordering states, Southeast...? I'm from Georgia.

The MCAT and GPA averages were much lower than many other schools, which made me think they are more mission-oriented with preference given to students who want to work in rural areas. Is this true?

Yes to basically all of that. They have a STRONG appalachian bias. They are VERY geared towards training rural physicians.

I have heard about the rise in accepted applicants. The reason for this is the brand new $30+ million facility they are building which will open up in march/april of 2012. This new state of the art facility will allow the school to matriculate 100 applicants this cycle, and then 125 the next cycle.

Was disappointed I had to get yet another letter of recommendation. I had a committee letter with 2 science faculty and my DO letter, but I requested a letter just now from another science faculty to satisfy KYCOM's requirement of 3 different letters. Hopefully this will be resolved quickly and I can submit the secondary application soon. I have finished it just waiting for a response from my science professor and for him to send it into interfolio.

does anyone know what address we should send in the letters? I tried to look for it and found regular one, but I don't want to send them to wrong address.:(

Even if you're not using Interfolio, if you look up the school through that site they should have the correct address. Or you can always call the admissions office.

So question... for the "Statement of Purpose" is that where you are all putting your essays or are you writing something here and also sending essays. Lol, I am assuming this is where the essay goes.

-- Edit: I am dumb, I re-read the instructions, the statement of purpose box is where the essays go.

Same here. At first I thought maybe it was just the in-staters receiving them, but that's not the case. I've never heard of them doing screening, but who knows...

Good luck to everyone!

So you have to get 3 science letters now? Or is it three letters from professors (2 science, 1 non science) and a DO letter?

Hey everyone! I got a secondary from them about 4 days ago, but I'm slightly confused about the "Statement of Purpose" section. Are they seriously just asking us to put our personal statement again, or can we write something different if it's still centering around the idea of "why medicine" (etc.)?

Wow, scratch that. I'm a genius! Please ignore my question. :(

I am still wondering the answer to this question! What is the statement of purpose?! It's so general I have no idea what to put there.

I basically discussed the same points I made in my personal statement but in different ways. I also tailored it more to Pikeville specifically and how their school would be a good fit for me considering I was born and raised in eastern Kentucky. Primary care and rural medicine are two big points for me which are both aspects of Pikeville's mission statement.

The application tells you what they want out of the statement of purpose. In some ways, yes it does seem like rehashing your personal statement, but it also asks for some more specific things (like why KYCOM). I made some of the same points as my personal statement, but mostly tried to write something new so they wouldn't think it was laziness. Good luck!

Hi All,

I spoke to admissions recently and wanted to let anybody who is waiting for their file to be complete: the lady who processes all of the electronic LORs & etc has been on medical leave but should be back next week to process that stuff, so be patient and maybe touch base with them if you don't hear anything by the end of next week. Enjoy the long weekend!

I received the email that my secondary had been successfully submitted and time stamped on August 23rd. My letters were all received back in July, so the secondary was all that had to be finished. I received another email on August 30th telling me that my secondary had been downloaded by the admissions staff, and on September 1st, I received my email notifying me about interviews. I posted the email below:

"Thank you for your interest in KYCOM. We have received your secondary application and our records show you have all necessary documents in your file to proceed with your application. The admissions committee has identified you as a strong candidate and we will be contacting you shortly concerning interview date. I look forward to speaking to you soon. Thanks!"

Hi all....are there any current students with advice for those with upcoming interviews? TIA

Gilligan26
09-27-2011, 07:10 AM
I interviewed at this school 2 years ago. My interview fell on the last weekend of interview dates and they informed us that the entire class had been filled the week prior. Basically, we were interviewing for waitlist spots and I didn't get in at that time. I've now been in grad school and improving my stats and re-applying this year.

For those curious about how the interview day goes, I'll share my experience. Of course, this is assuming that they haven't changed the process since I interviewed. All of the interviewees are in one room together and 1st and 2nd year students will come out and talk to you while you wait to be called back for your interview. (Not sure if this is true or not, but I was told by a student prior to my interview that the school is using this method to see how you interact with others.) You'll get called back to a separate room and you will be interviewed by two people. The interview is open file.

For me personally, my interview was very laid back and myself and the interviewers were cracking jokes and having fun. I've been told that the ease of your interview really depends on who interviews you. Some of them can be pretty harsh, but this might not be a bad thing. A med student told us before we had our interviews that before he was accepted he had gone through the interview process twice. The first time, his interview was fun and laid back and then he was rejected. The next time he applied, the interviewers were really down on him and he ended up getting accepted.

Last Friday, I called and they told me they meet weekly usually Thurs or Friday and they should be reviewing applications and notifying next batch of applicants early next week like Monday or Tuesday of next week.

By the way, since they are adding the Coal Building in 2012...is the class size increasing as well from 75 to 125? Here is the article I found:

http://migration.kentucky.gov/newsroom/governor/20101008pikeville.htm

Last Friday, I called and they told me they meet weekly usually Thurs or Friday and they should be reviewing applications and notifying next batch of applicants early next week like Monday or Tuesday of next week.

By the way, since they are adding the Coal Building in 2012...is the class size increasing as well from 75 to 125? Here is the article I found:

http://migration.kentucky.gov/newsroom/governor/20101008pikeville.htm

http://www.coalminingourfuture.net/the-news/83--coal-building-ground-breaking-pikeville-college.html

If the class size does double, I'm happy. That mean's there's more spots for interviews and acceptances!:)

Thanks for the information on the timeline. The last I heard from Angel in admissions, the class size was increasing (this was a few months ago). I know it will eventually support 125, but I'm not sure if it'll jump from the 75-80 they admit now to the 125 right away. Either way, more spots will be opening.

I don't know much about Dr. Litman (What I have heard, he's really nice), but Dr. Deatley is hilarious...he's really easy going and fun to talk to.

If I recall properly, the incoming class size for next year (Class of 2016) will probably be around 100-ish, with the subsequent year reaching the anticipated 125 limit.

Just drove back to Alabama from Pikeville (6.5hrs) for me. I had a really good experience ,the new school is going to be great with vastly improved technology. All of the students were very nice and eager to ask questions. I was told today by my interviewers that I should hear back quick, probably a week. The interview was very laid back for me and I really enjoyed it. I was very suprised on my tour of the Gross Anatomy lab that I actually was able to see the cadavers! My previous interview at DCOM did not allow the cadavers to be visible, so this was a definite plus for me today.

Also, if anyone is interested you get Dell Laptops and also a ipad2 which is cool. As you may know all the expenses are covered in the tuition so there is definitely some value here. There was a lot of people interviewing today, I would guess 30-40! Not exactly sure on how many will be accepted.

Good luck to everyone! With the new school I expect this school to move up a lot of people's list. I interview at DMU next Friday then should have a good idea where I would like to go if I was accepted.

Generally, what is the chance at acceptance here after receiving an interview? Does anyone have any stats like how many apply, how many get interviewed, and how many accepted?

Also, has anyone gotten accepted for Class of 2016 yet? I know they had interviews in late Sept- 9/30 I believe?

I'm not sure what the chances are, but a student there told me that sometimes on interview days they have two lists of those being interviewed. One list is students they've pretty much already decided to admit and the other is students they're unsure of and are bringing them in to see what they have to say.

Since it is rolling admissions, generally the earlier the better your chances. One student guessed that probably 8 out every of 10 people who interviewed last week would probably be admitted since we were the first batch of interviewees (there were about 30-40 of us there). We should be notified this week of our admission status.

Well i just received an invite for interview on 10/14 yesterday, so that gives me only 10 days. Are 10 days enough to get ready? Has anyone here received an interview on such short notice? I thought they give 3 or 4 weeks in advance notice. Should I ask for an extension date or is it better to go for an interview earlier? I really wish I had 3 weeks to prepare which is why i am asking. I mean will it lower my chances of getting accepted if I extend the date? Help and advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks and sorry for the bombardment of questions :-)

The longer you wait, the more seats will be filled by those previously interviewed (rolling admissions), and if you do your research on SDN and Google there is no reason you shouldn't be prepared for an interview in 10 days (especially if you use your weekend wisely). It may not give you enough time to set up a mock interview, which I found very helpful, but I could be wrong. As an aside about prepping for the interview, I found that even just discussing question topics with those closest to you is helpful in formulating/articulating your answers. Good luck!

From my experience:

Interview was approx 40 mins, but it went longer than they expected because we got sidetracked and started chatting.

Low stress, more conversational. I was one of the first called to be interviewed out of the whole group, tho, so I didn't have to sit there and worry very long. The 1st & 2nd year students that were there were very friendly, and there was a nice intro presentation before the interviews started.

I was interviewed by 1 DO (Assoc Dean, professor, and ran the free clinic) and 1 PhD (Assoc Dean and professor)

Questions were related mostly to my application (a more personal rather than strict interview), which included the research paper that I am going to be a published author on, the weaknesses of my application, why KYCOM (I'm from OR), among others including the generic 2 strengths & 2 weaknesses.

Hope this helps.

I don't know for sure, but their 2011-2012 student hand book talks about the different amounts of loans you can get and the average debt that students are in when they graduate. Judging by that it seems like its around $38,000 per year.

Interview done...It was very short about 15 min! I was last so I think they wanted to leave, but he said keep your phone nearby next week....which is a good sign?

first they thought I was too young (I'm 21 and a senior in college) because I guess most of the applicants were a few years older...Also, they didn't have my whole application because they thought I only had done 88 credits?? But I have done more than 100 and I guess there was some application confusion.

Overall, in the end he asked me to sell myself and I talked about why I'm a good candidate and he said, "I'm sold. I like your energy, you've got spunk" And he said keep my phone nearby so I guess it went well?

I hope so:/

I don't believe they can see which schools you applied to, though pretty much any question is fair game, including the one above. I was not asked that question in my interview, though.

I think the calls usually come anytime from monday-wednesday. When I saw you posted on here, I thought for sure you were posting to say you got the call and you had been accepted haha. I didn't get a call today either, but its good to know that it seems those haven't gone out yet!

Congrats to all those that received acceptances today.

I have been accepted to a school closer to home -- west coast -- and will be declining my acceptance from KYCOM, so hopefully that will free up another spot for a future interviewee! Best of luck, everyone!

Hi guys I was just wondering if anyone could post some information on housing availability or any suggestions to those recently accepted.. thanks!:) and good luck to everyone interviewing..i will say my interview was relaxed and a big part was devoted to why pikeville? why D.O.? ..

housing is a pain in the butt. Try adams and hensley rental agencies. I would start looking now and plan on at least paying a few months early. I started renting in mid april for august...housing situation is tight so that is why you need to rent early. Also check the paper, stop in appilacian express they will give you a paper and will try to help you. Be prepared for some crazy rent. I pay 825 for a 2 bedroom town house and thst doesnt include utilities. Now there are cheaper places, even some that are furnished, i just liked this place ans was the only place i found over weeks of looking that i liked so i jumped onit. If you rent from adams make sure you have a copy of your acceptance, that and some personal info is all they need. They will send out a housing list for you with phone numbers in the spring, and they will send emails as they get info on places to live. I wold suggest friending some first and second years on fb and ask if they are moving or if they have heard of anything opening up by august. Good luck guys!!!!:luck:

QUESTION!!
Did you use your AACOMAS essay for their statement of purposes in the secondary application? They did not really specify what they want you to write about.

does anyone have a hard time getting ahold of the admissions office? I have an interview on the 4th (or so the email invite said) and I am trying to find the best way of getting there. i've resorted to the 15 hour drive from kansas city i think as i have an interview the following week on the 8th in tennessee. however i dont even know if i have been officially given the spot because I haven't gotten a response from the admissions office. i got the invite the confirmed on the 13th confirmation email sent 15th. called on the 17th no answer. left message and email. no answer yet. called the 18th twice. no answer. today i decided to call over random periods throughout the day and also no answer. therefore i decided heck ill call the university line. this prompted me to the osteo department where i was transferred (by a machine) to two separate admissions people (no answer for either) and also to the front desk to which i also got a machine. What the heck is going on?!?

Should i be concerned i didn't get my interview spot or just show up on the fourth and say what's up y'all? lol.

TIA, Ross

i think any opportunity you have to tell more about yourself should be used to say something different than what they have all read in your primary. just my .02

How long did it take for everyone to get a complete email after they submitted the secondary? I submitted mine about two weeks ago. My interfolio letter also hasn't been downloaded by them and it had been ready for a month, are they just busy with the transition?

They only have 1 person working in the admissions office and she has to sort through 2,000 applications. I would email Angel Hamilton or Ronnie Collins if you don't hear back after 2 weeks following submission of your secondary.

For me, they took 2 weeks after I submitted to get the complete email and interview invite.

Try calling Mr. Collins. You would probably have better luck. He seems pretty nice.

I'm still waiting for them to download my new MCAT scores. Hoping I can be invited to the November interview.

With only one person working admissions it gets tough. I wojuld call everyday around 8 and leave a msg and i would send emails ince a day with high urgency. She will get back to you its just hard. I wouldnt be suprised if thye got your conf and just didnt reply so if you dont hear back. Y then just show up! You do not want to miss this chance. Ohhhh and we are on fall break 28th- 31st of october so dont expect anything those two business days....they clo the offices too. Good luck! Oh and i may be at the nov interviews we will have to see how bad block weekend is!

I interviewed on 9/30 and just received my packet last night, but I also live on the West Coast. Also, the "packet" was really just an acceptance letter.

Just saw this after posting on the WVSOM thread:

US News and World Report Says:

Instate: Applied: 142 , Interviewed: 94 , Accepted: 64 , Enrolled: 47

OutofState: Applied: 2389 , Interviewed: 127 , Accepted: 106 , Enrolled:33

This seems off to me...not sure though..but thats what it said

I just submitted my secondary today. I've been trying to get in touch with KYCOM for about 2 weeks about my fee waiver and gave up today and just paid the $75. Of course then I got an email with Ronnie Collins number and called him, immediately got an answer, and luckily will be refunded the $75. Think today was late submitting or still have a shot at an interview before Jan?

They have 2 more rounds of interviews in November and December, so you still have a shot!

Also, I couldn't find the Facebook group for Class of 2015 or 2016 and the Class of 2015 people had written it on the board during the interview but I don't know if I'm typing the wrong name?

There is hope for everyone with a low GPA like myself. 2.9/2.9 GPA, 28 mcat, OOS, light on volunteer hours and I got the call on Tuesday. Pretty sure this is our favorite place so far. And you get an iPad 2 :)

I'm from Chicago and I got accepted and a lot of people in my interview were from out of state so don't give up!

It took them 2 weeks for me to go from complete email to interview invite.

Your stats are a bit lower than their average, but if they like other parts of your application, then you have a chance.

Their MCAT and GPA average is 24 MCAT and 3.3 GPA.
