I'd like to start a thread where people can post when they hear about interviews for prelim MDCN or transitional yr. I applied to 12 transitional programs in the nyc area, have yet to hear. A friend of mine has already been invited to interview at Maimonides.

Does anyone know anything about the reputation of the Baltimore prelim / transitional programs?

Hopkins Bayview, Hopkins Sinai, Univ Maryland, Mercy, Harbor Hospital, etc.

Has anyone applied to / received interviews from these programs?

GBMC is a great program. I also thought Sinai and Bayview to be excellent internal medicine internships. U. Maryland is a good program too.

Out of all the programs, GBMC is the most "sought after".

Just a couple of follow up questions about Baltimore prelim programs. I'm going to be interviewing at GBMC. What is it that makes the program the most "sought after" (better hours vs. better quality training vs. nicer people vs. more elective time vs. nicer facilities, etc)? Do you know anything about the prelim programs at Union Memorial or Mercy?

A couple of additional questions:
1) What do you think about the importance of elective time in the prelim year (to do some ophtho and/or related electives)? As far as I know, Sinai, Bayview, and Univ MD all have very little elective time (1 month or less) whereas other programs have up to 3 months of electives.
2) Do you think that the surgery time that you would get in a transitional year is valuable for ophthalmology residency?

About GBMC, I asked in another forum about it. Looks like it might be going downhill, with residents frequently exceeding the 80 hour work week in the ICU. There is a recent review at scutwork.com. I really want to be in Baltimore for my prelim year, so I am having a tough time figuring out where to go. But I had another friend told me that although GBMC used to be one of the "cusher" programs, a lot has changed. Plus GBMC does not have night float, which Mercy does. In my opinion, night float makes all the difference, baby! I do want to be in Baltimore, but now I"m considering Christiana Care in Delaware and York Hospital for the above reasons.

Thanks for your post. I had heard similar things about GBMC from one or two other people. But how does night float benefit interns? At my home program, the interns and students still stay overnight, it's just the resident (2nd or 3rd year medicine categorical) who gets to go home at around 8pm and come back the next morning. Are there programs where there's night float coverage for interns?

heard from st vincents manhattan transitional. i called them & they told me that i actually had an interview offer a while back & they were not sure why i hadnt heard yet. i'll take it.

finally heard from my last 2 transitional programs: got interviews at sloan kettering & frankford.. so ended up gettin all 11 interviews i applied to in the ny metro area..

Applied to a whole bunch of these, prelim and transitional, kinda randomly according to location. So far I have:
