I would add:

Do some volunteer work that is health related: sometimes you study and you get so immersed in your books that you forget that you' re studying to be a doctor, to help others. Last year i went with a group to give vaccinations to people that lived in poor areas, it was a pretty fulfilling experience and you start gaining contact with the patient, you learn how to talk to them, it gives you self confidence, etc
(I' m not sure if in the US you go to hospitals right away so maybe this is more applied to pre-meds? here we have to wait until we' re in 4th year)
