western has never shown up in my aadsas as well but I wouldn't worry -- my interviewer told me off the record that I was in. I'm assuming some may be contacted in a different way or it may possibly just take longer for our aadsas accounts to be updated. so keep your fingers crossed because there's still a chance!!

Got a call from Western not too long ago, making it official! They said they would send out the acceptance packet with all the info today and it should arrive within a week via snail mail.

Hey guys. I spoke with Western - the letters went out today, and thus will arrive in a few days. Also, possibly faculty members will be making phone calls today to those applicants that got accepted. No updates on AADSAS.

yes. I got it 3 days ago. It's not like a huge packet, more like 4 papers. One that you send back in that you accept with the deposit.

I got a call from Dr. Bradley Henson yesterday around 4pm about my acceptance. However, I haven't seen anything change on AADSAS and haven't received an email from Western U yet either. Has anyone else heard recently?

I got a voicemail from Dr. Henson on the 6th (3 days ago) for my acceptance. I have never had westernu show up on my aadsas and it still does not. He said the packet should be on the way this week. Interviewed oct 22nd.

Oh phew! I was so worried because no one else wrote recently on this thread and because I didn't get an email or have it show up on my aadsas, but I never had westernu show up on my aadsas either. I called Western today and they said they sent out packets this morning and should be arriving by the end of the week. Congrats!

The committee is deciding on whether to add any additional interview sessions. i got wait listed via letter in the mail. Thought it was a rejection letter at first.. WHY ARE THEY ADDING MORE INTERVIEW GROUPS! why why why!! the waiting game really puts a toll on your nerves.. :scared:

I got a request for interview today. They scheduled me for what they said was the last and only date that they are holding interviews- Feb 24. I imagine that at this late date, interviewees will be told of their fate rather quickly and alternates will start to be accepted shortly after....

Considering that It's a new school and it's private, I'm sure most people who get an acceptance from another school will give up their spot at Western and they will move though a large portion of the alternate list. I already declined my spot so that's one more for you guys. Good luck!

Not exactly sure where people are getting their numbers from, but when I called the admissions office today, all they said was we can expect to hear back as late as August.

When I asked in regards to the size of the alternate list, they said that they are unable to provide that information to the public.

Yeah. I interviewed there back in Sept and I loved it. If you don't mind me asking, who told you everyone got in from alternate list last yr? I am waitlisted there. I would love it to happen again this yr... :/ Anyways, thank you for the info. It really helps.

Also, TireKicker mentioned how he was told that last year, all alternates were eventually accepted. I can't imagine them accepting 200 students but that certainly is relieving (if true)

It was me. Instead of calling the advisor directly, i called the admission's office. I think i may have talked to their assistant?? Because it seemed like advisors never gave out any answers.... Anyways, It is possible that the person I spoke to gave out an inaccurate info so don't buy it 100%. :)

They started accepting the February interviewees last week. Assuming they did not give out more interviews, alternates will start this week (Friday) at the earliest (doubtful) if not later.

I stand corrected - I thought February 9th was the first date people start getting alternate notices. So I guess that means alternate acceptances for February 9th people will come in about 2 weeks or so (if the time between notice and acceptance are around the same)

I guess we all just have to hold tight :xf:

Wait a sec...I never filled out a form. My mom just called me and told me I was on the alternate list when it came in the mail. I got accepted last week, so.....perhaps it's not necessary, really. What the heck..

Hmm, odd. I guess they first just decided to put everyone on the alternate then realized later that the list got out of hand and decided to have people send in forms.

But as you said, heck, you got in, and that's all that matters :thumbup:

I was thinking the other way around that 150 replied they wanted to stay of the list while the other 50 were going else where. Did the alternate letter state how long we have till to respond to this letter?
I also got a letter from Western and I'm currently out of country.
I'm trying to figure out which letter I got-- for my neighbor couldn't figure out and she said the time was given as to when I should reply back.

It was one week I think. I can't remember exactly

I don't have the letter with me, but I think that if the letter was from January, you did not have to respond. However, letters that were postmarked February 9th had a form that needed to be filled out and mailed back. If I recall correctly and from what uwkicker says, I think it was a week after the date of the letter (which was February 9th for me and many others)

She told me I'd be getting snail mail explaining the exact date. But she said "two weeks" and "$1,000"...perhaps two weeks from the date she called.

For people that have been accepted. Did they call you only on Friday sometime between 8-5 or was it outside of those times and on other days?

I think they meant they gave out ~200 alternative offers. Meaning it could be less than 200 since some could have denied the offer.. Iono.. Well... I think we had one more interview than last yr though.. (compared to what l read in last yr's forum) so we will just have to see... :/

Ditto - I don't think it is a confirmation though as much as it is a, "Tell us if you are still interested", hence, the survey. That way, they can refine the alternate list to a smaller number and eliminate those who are on the waitlist but don't intend on attending.

As shinyMIRROR has pointed out, maybe we can expect acceptances rolling in soon, maybe even as early as this Friday!

I just got one too. I agree with CedarZ4. I think they are consolidating the alternate list to people actually still interested in attending.
I believe they will be reviewing the alternate list tomorrow and making calls possibly tomorrow or Friday.

Got me excited, too! It is good information to know though, regardless. I think this year it's actually cheaper than last year...? The e-mail said it was like $60,000 per year? If I recall, it was $68,000 last year. I could have made that number up though, so don't take my word for it.

It's good to know that there is some movement, though. Maybe tomorrow or Friday? :xf:

Edit: I think the $68 number I quoted was including equipment, so tuition appears to have been unchanged.

I wander when the deposits are due for people that were granted an acceptance, unless that deadline had already passed. There could be potentially some movement around that date based on the responses from those candidates.

Maybe there's a deadline for the 2nd portion of the deposit? I guess that I'm not too familiar with that portion of the process.

I think the schools will be able to see who has put down more than one deposit in April. If someone is holding more than one place at a school, the schools are allowed to un-accept them and offer the spot to another student (I think they give them some kind of grace period, but I don't think it lasts very long). Hopefully we hear something soon!

The next deposit due is on April 14th, and is another $1000 on top of the first deposit. Hopefully this will solidify the class a little more! Best of luck to everyone :)

I just wanted to share that contrary to what was stated earlier, the 2nd deposit is April 15th, not the 14th. This should not change much, however, since I suspect acceptances are usually given out on Thursdays/Fridays anyway. Just wanted to clear that up.

And I really liked Western when I was there and think I will do better on that academic program. I'm certainly leaning towards Western so I'll have to decide soon!

By the way, does anyone have recommendations for what areas are safe and family-friendly to live in? We're looking for a 3-bedroom apartment probably. Someone mentioned Ontario would be safer that Pamona...any thoughts?

Also, not to sway you one way or another but a few +/-s that may help you make the decision easier. I personally loved Western. Fantastic faculty and really state-of-the-art facilities. Being in California is also a plus. On the other hand, Tufts is a more-established institution that is accredited. It probably has a "better name" and "prestige" because of this. I can't speak for the faculty or facility because I didn't have the opportunity to interview there, but that is something to keep in mind. Not to mention, I don't remember if Tufts is in Boston but I know if it's not, it's pretty close. So it's not like you are choosing MidWest vs. California. Good luck :thumbup:

First time I been in California was on my interview. However, from what I recall I think people mentioned that Pomona is not the best place to live. However, there are a few nearby places (I really can't tell you what they are off my top of my head, maybe a quick google search) that is more friendly and relatively cheap. So I know they are available. If I'm not mistaken, Ontario is pretty far? At least 30 minute drive. Not sure if you feel comfortable commuting 30minutes every day. I know I flew in from Ontario and my drive was 30+ minutes.

This may be another + for Tufts, since it is in Medford (not Boston, I just looked it up) and that is a pretty safe town.

If I'm not mistaken, Ontario is pretty far? At least 30 minute drive. Not sure if you feel comfortable commuting 30minutes every day. I know I flew in from Ontario and my drive was 30+ minutes.

This may be another + for Tufts, since it is in Medford (not Boston, I just looked it up) and that is a pretty safe town.

Just as an opinion b/c I got into Western and BU and chose Western I would say Pomona is a much nicer area to be with family. I noticed in your pre-dents profile that you have kids and I think Boston is a much harder city to raise children in. Pomona is a nice very quaint and safe area and Western is an amazing school! I know Tufts has an excellent curriculum but at the expense of distance from family plus all those flights and the hassle of moving so far away I would just stay close. Best of luck in your decision and hopefully I see you at Western next year! :)

Relocation is not that easy especially with a family, but it's ultimately up to tcn79 to choose a place that shall meet his needs.

Ultimately, it is TCN's own decision. I just wanted to try to give as many perspective as possible. This is definitely a big decision, and we wouldn't want one aspect that seems like a big deal at the time to sway him into a direction he will regret later down the road. Then again, both schools are terrific and you will become a dentist regardless so you can't really go wrong with either.

I went to the area saturday to check out several potential apartment complexes. Chino Hills is Okay, but Claremont is really really nice. Chino Hills is a newer community with all the normal chain stores you would expect in a middle class neighborhood. Claremont is older with unique architecture and a great downtown with a hipster meets college town meets artsy vibe.

Call. Typically on Thursdays or Fridays. Information will then be mailed after the call if I'm not mistaken. You have 15 days to put down a deposit.

Although, last rounds of acceptances for wait-list students was on Monday. One or two people heard back on Thursday/Friday, then a few more on Monday.

I'm thinking since the last and 2nd deposit is this weekend, acceptances won't come again until next Thursday/Friday.

It seems like you're barking up the wrong tree. SDN probably isn't the best place to find a new pad. Most Western programs have a class facebook page. We have a few listings on the dental class page (http://www.facebook.com/groups/304076536293059/). Also, if you're already admitted, check out the listings on BanWeb. There are also two apartment complexes adjacent to the campus, the Metropolitan and the Helix.

I called on Monday, but they couldn't say much-- only that they're probably finalizing and keeping track of who paid the deposits. No clue how many paid deposits.

However, the member Parvaz said his/her deadline for deposit is April 20th (this Friday). So maybe we can expect as early as Friday and the following week.

I got a call from Western on March 6th (a Friday) at 4:30 pm Cali time. I had been accepted off the wait list (it's still my only acceptance). I'm sure one of you will be getting a call either tomorrow or Friday in the evening since there is at least one spot open as of yesterday! Hopefully I can call you my classmate soon! After browsing old threads, it seems that those selected from the waitlisted may be chosen at random, especially since the list is not ranked.

Peerless mentioned something about this as well back in 2009 when he spoke with university officials during a tour with his predental club. I'll try to find the link. You can do a search in the forums too.

He said that they accepted all 64 deposits for their seats, and what that means to me is that they filled up all of their seats (64) and everyone has put down a deposit for those seats. As one person drops out, they will pick one from the alternate. I believe this year they have 79 seats (there was some discussion about this in earlier posts on this thread)
In 2009, they had 80 alternate applicants. So, what this means is without me rambling anymore...It would appear they are following the same trend. So all of their seats are full now (let's say, 79) and as one drops out, they will pick one off the alternate. Since they have a larger class size, I would imagine the alternate spot to be larger as well (guessing maybe 100 students?)

Peerless doesn't seem to mention anything about where he got the "pull names out of the lottery" from though. He just mentioned he went on a tour but doesn't tell us if it was a counselor, a dean, a current student, etc. I'm not saying that it can't happen, it may very well be, just that as you have said, take it with a grain of salt.

Edit: An interesting thing that I noticed that is sorta related is that Peerless appeared to have been accepted by Western for the 2009 cycle from off the waitlist. However, he still re-applied for the 2010 cycle and Western was one of the schools he applied to again... He was accepted to 2 other schools this time, but not Western. Wonder what's going on there. Really makes me question the legitimacy of what he is saying though. However, without background story I can't say that he is lying either. So we'll see.

I believe what happened was that he was waitlisted at both UOP and WesternU. Knowing that a waitlist + rejection @ UOP practically guarantees admission the following cycle, he applied to UOP. I'm sure he added WesternU and a few other schools on his list as a backup measure.

I just took myself off the waitlist. accepted at another school. I hope it helps your chances random people still waiting.

Although, it is pretty late in the cycle... very late. I don't see them getting any more applications/interviews so any open spot can only be filled with waitlist students. And rumor has it (from previous years), Western likes to keep a decent number of seats open (as opposed to filling their class, then fill drop-out with waitlists). If this is true, then everyone here getting accepted might be possible. We have about 5 (or less) students who post frequently on this thread who is on the waitlist. That isn't too too many students. But again, we shall see.

Don't lose your hope. I know last year someone got the acceptance late in the process, like a month before school started or something. I know waiting is the worst part but there's always hope.

I just had a question not really related to Western but sort of. I went on the ADEA portal to look at the status for WesternU, and realized that you can no longer sign in to ADEA. Is my 2012 cycle application deleted, and I can't access that anymore? I have to wait until June 4th to create my 2013 application, or what's the deal.

This is the information that was emailed to me back in March:

The SMSPP course has been designed for the student whose prerequisite anatomy course had limited access to the human body or for those that want to have a refreshed understanding of the human body before the academic rigors of dental school start. The program provides a preview of Gross Anatomy and Head & Neck Anatomy. DMD students in the program will also receive an introduction to Biochemistry/Genetics, Microbiology/Immunology and basic patient Palpation Skills. In addition, DMD students will attend a special mini-course which is an Introduction to Dental Terminology, Cariology, Materials, Radiology, Periodontics, Oral Pathology, Anatomy, and Dentition.

The five-week program will be held on campus June 18th - July 20nd, 2012. The cost of the program is $750.00 and this price includes the required textbooks and materials.


I am taking it because it will give me some exposure to cadavers, it will be a good review, it will give me a chance to try their tests and see where I'm at while exposing me to some of the teachers, and, most importantly, it will get me used to the pace of dental school before it counts.

You definitely have me sold. I'm just not sure if I can make it by June 18. I do have experience dissecting cadavers from an anatomy course last year. I'm just hoping its enough.

thanks a lot! it feels awesome. its unreal sometimes when i think about it. haha. definitely will see you this fall. I don't think I'm going to do the program because I still have work. but nonetheless, excited to meet you all this fall.

is class full as of now? So they are sending acceptance letters, not phone call or email.

We'll never know if they're full or not.

When I called them last week and from this thread, it would appear they are only sending snail mail without a phone call or e-mail. However, it is important to note that the 2 who responded on this thread were both based in California. DrSicem from Colorado and myself from New Jersey (I just checked my mail), we haven't gotten anything yet. This could be either because they are only accepting California residents now, or the letter has gotten to our part of the country yet (it did take them 2 days to get them in-state).

Cedar, Did you talk with an admission counselor or a person who is in admission office?

Admissions Counselor. I'm not sure many people (at least I don't) know who actually is on the Admissions Committee.

Are the letters being sent FedEx, UPS or USPS?

I too interviewed back in October. However, again, I am not in-state so that may be.

In regards to Roni, I haven't received the letter yet (obviously) but I'm pretty sure it's by USPS but again, someone correct me if I'm wrong. Also, didn't you withdraw from Western?

Let's not lose faith yet! If they sent out more letters there is a very good chance we still would not have received them yet. And since Western is private I don't think they give much (if any) preference to CA residents. Hopefully we will have a nice letter waiting for us in the mail tomorrow :xf:

Yeah right after I posted that I went here: http://prospective.westernu.edu/dentistry/competitive and saw that there were a lot of CA residents :(

Maybe they're filling up their CA spots first then doing OOS? :D

Haha, things we tell ourselves to make us feel better. Well, it's the only thing keeping me sane. Hopefully something tomorrow. :xf::luck:

what is the class size for this year? 78 or 69? too confuse because people have different answers.

The clinic has 76 chairs which is why they admitted 76 last year. This year however, they are only admitting 68 or 69 to leave a couple of chairs open for the specialists.

I don't know that anyone besides the admissions committee knows this for sure, just like we don't know how many people are already accepted or how many people are on the wait list. I pulled out the notes that I took at my interview and I wrote down that they were accepting 72 this year, but I'm sure they could have changed their minds since then too!

As this has been discussed before, no one really knows how many seats they have until the stats get published next year. However, I was actually told at my interview (but this was back in October) that they were accepting MORE than the 76 seats that they have. They told us that (I forgot what they said) it will work out even though there are more students than seats.

While it may be true that more CA residents apply than non-CA residents, another thing to keep in mind is that they are more likely to accept CA residents because CA residents are more likely to accept the acceptance than OOS due purely just do distance.

That I don't know - sorry. :( I looked at the Facebook group though and there are 32ish people that I know for a fact are current Western people. There could be more - I don't know all of the first years. So that leaves 60ish that could be the new class (if all in the FB group are still planning on going to Western). I would imagine that they have tentatively filled the class, but people still have time to change their minds, not submit the next deposit, etc. Everything is fluid until classes actually start in August. Someone in my year got the acceptance call in late July, so don't give up hope!
